- American Reacts to Fastelavnsboller - it's finally time to share a delicious fastelavnsboller and give you my reaction. I have loved Fastelavn since moving to Denmark, and as an American living in Denmark, I was very excited to find this fastelvansboller with a Valentine's Day twist. This one combines Danish culture and American culture with the obvious nod to Danish tradition of the fastelavnsboller and touching on the American Valentine's holiday. Excited to answer the questions, "what is fastelavn?" and "what is a fastelvansboller?" and share my reaction with you - spoiler alert - it's delicious #fastelavn #fastelavnsboller #denmark #danmark #dansk #danishculture #culture #cultures #shortsfeed #shorts

I miss those. Heck, I miss all Danish pastries. Scratch that, I miss all Danish food 😭
Danish food is the only reason I put up with the weather 😂
@@AstaGruwier-vi5ht 😂😂😂😂 I'd put up with anything to be able to eat Danish food every day
Your probably the first American I have ever heard pronounce something right in danish lol, it’s such a great pronunciation that you have.
I wouldnt say its right but its close enough.
@@H4LTHERUNNER yeah, but its actually so amazing that i’d say its almost right
Han er ikke den første men det er da slet ikke rigtigt
@@signefink1957 Som JEG har hørt. Og jeg synes at det var virkelig godt udtalt.
I do love the fancy pants fastelavnsboller shown here but I have to admit that my true love is the old fashioned ones. A sweet bread dough folded around some sort of filling with some chocolate or icing on top like my mother used to bake. My favourite filling when I was a kid was strawberry jam or vanilla custard but as I grew older I did learn to appreciate the prune variety my mother also made and that I used to avoid like the plague as a kid. A huge bonus point for these are the fact that they are much more portable than the cream mountains you get at the bakeries, meaning you can eat fastelavnsboller *and* strike the cat off the barrel at the same time 😁
You could tell more about the Fastelavn tradition, that the kids wear costumes and the “slå-katten-af-tønden” activity. This is also a big part of Fastelavn.
We have a long video about Fastelavn :)
To slå katten af tønden is actually a really strange thing to do on a holiday if you think about it
You need to mention the intricate battle different cities has about WHO MAKES THE BEST FASTELAVNSBOLLER!!!
I love the old fashion ones much better than the flacky ones. I will bake some tomorrow, and I almost can't wait :-)
Hope you guys have a great Valentines day.
Lots of love ❤
I honestly prefer the "old" version with custard inside - this much cream makes me nauseous.. But my partner loves 'em ^^
I recommend eating fastelavnsboller with knife and fork - it's so much easier. 😄
FasTalavsBollErs😂😂
You did a great job pronouncing it❤
Thanks 😅
My mum also used to make sugar free versions for my grandpa, since he had diabetes. That way when the family got together, we could all have one. Dunno if they make them in bakeries/shops.
I use fork and knife when I eat fastelavnsboller, or cakeforks ...never eat with the hands 😄🇩🇰
American habits 😂
And I totally agreed. It's so much easier with knife and fork. 🙂
Im very danish in that matter, eating with hands are just a nogo 😀
Jeg spiser dem med hænderne

Det’ godt du køber fra Lagkagehuset!!

Wow, mange tak 🤩
Hej min danske bror
Er der nogen der kan huske fastelavn er mit navn
@@alexanderborup1040 jeg Jan lol
Ayy really good pronunciation👍❤
i love the acent XD fastelawnsballer
I love these
In Sweden we eat Semlor instead. The dish that killed a king. ;-)
Besides hindbærsnitter, fastelavnsboller are my favorites
I enjoy the newer ones that were created in Southern Jutland than you have but generally only eat maybe 1 or 2 a year and split it someone generally then. The Old style ones are much more enjoyable as far as eating at fastelavn events.
EYYYYY HE SAID FASTALAVN RIGHT!!!!! I Can comferm that as a danish person
As a dane i am those Are bussin bussin fr
As a person that has lived 27 yrs in denmark its reguler
The best pastries of the year.
Couldn't agree with that any more! :)
Fastelavnsboller hit different my dude
✨diabetic coma treat✨
Fastelavn is where the Danes beat the cat out of the barrel 🐈⬛😱
Have you made a video about it yet? You guys are so good at finding quirky details.
In the old days there was a cat in a barrel 😱🐈⬛
And Fastelavsris 🌿
and sing "Buns up, buns down, buns in my belly, if I don't get any buns, I'll make trouble"
Yes, we have a full video on Fastelvan here: ua-cam.com/video/8QtAPSzFkhg/v-deo.html
And now you have this 67 year old Dane Living in Belgium humming that
Back i the good ol' days you would put a black cat i a barrel and beat the barrel with a bat for fastelavn
It is funny to see someone who didn’t group speaking danish when you think it is so easy
It’s definitely not easy to us - and we hate when get mocked for it
There are several versions of fastelavns boller.
Love it…diabetic coma treat! I think I would love one of these! Sure is a mouthful to say, and you say it so fast!
haha that’s why I add the subtitles for my American speed haha
Jeg har bagt gammeldags fastelavnsboller :)
jer der er mega gode
Super, god fornøjelse ☺
Hello, as a dane forced to learn about this in school, I will try to tell you about Fastelavn as accurate as possible. Fastelavn is kinda our party before misery ( in the past). We were told by the church to fast for I think a month. This didn't mean no food till sundown like Ramadan, but we where nkt aloud to eat for example, "the white products" such as sugar, flour, milk and eggs. We were also not allowed to eat meat ( or arleast specific types of it). So before the fast began, they made sort of celebrations the three days before it started, which was always the Wednesday seven weeks before Easter. So Sunday and monday it was all about eating meat, while thursday was all about these white products, the reason behind Fastelavnsboller. Also today it is more of a celebration for the children, like katten af tønden and dressing up, but it actually started of as a thing for adults. And yes in the start there was a cat that they hit in the barrel. Tye cat was black, so it was associated with the devil and witches, so of course, why not abuse them.
We have a long video about Fastelavn too

I love your videos, but for this reel I have to comment saying that when you use the phrase "diabetic coma" it sends a prejudiced message that we, who actually have diabetes, are trying so hard to get rid of. I totally get why you use it, and this is not me being offended or anything. It's just that every time I tell people I have diabetes (I have type 1 diabetes), they ask me whether I ate too much sugar as a child, and I have to explain that you cannot get diabetes from eating too much sugar. Type 1 diabetes is a chronic autoimmune illness that you cannot prevent and you do not have any control over whether you get it or not. It is your immune system attacking the cells in your pancreas producing insulin. Just as other autoimmune illnesses is your immune system attacking other parts of your body. So phrases like "I ate so much sugar today that I'm probably getting diabetes" or the like really adds to the prejudice agains that illness. It is already a very very very stressfull diagnosis that affect your daily life to a very high degree, so getting rid of all the misconceptions would help a lot. And yes you can definitely eat sugar as a diabetic (a lot of the time you have to when your blood sugar is low, and in my case to keep my weight up). And no you cannot go into a diabetic coma when eating sugar :) I'm sorry if this comes across as an overreaction. It just touched very close to home :) Tank you for making great videos! :)
Sorry for that - it definitely wasn’t the intention - just was trying to mention that it would be a sugar spike
I appreciate you pointing this out, we try to think before we speak but this one didn’t register until we heard from you ❤️
