  • I've coached a lot of players, looked over a lot of databases, and seen some very costly mistakes over the years. Today I'm going to talk about some of the most common issues that, when corrected, can make you a lot more money at the tables. Even very solid players sometimes neglect some of these things, so pay close attention.

In Harrington's book he suggests using the time as a randomizer. Even if people know what you're doing they won't be able to figure out why, or what you'd do in another similar situation.

Awesome content, I love it so much. It is just amazing how brilliant the info is and how much you help me with my ranges understanding. I think I improved a ton mainly because of your videos. Also adding a little bit of comedy into it always makes me smile and it is way easier to watch without getting bored rather than hand history reviews (even though both are a must).

I've got one for you that's helped my game. I call it respect the donk. What I do is, when I see a play that looks stupid, instead of just saying whatever donk and moving on, I stop and pretend it was a genius that made the play and I just dont understand it yet. Then I look at it again with the idea that I want to figure out how what they did was actually a really great play. Sometimes it is and most times it isn't, but the exercise open a lot of doors for me into plays I might otherwise had never thought of.

I took a 3rd, 5th, and 6th in those tournaments and I like upswing poker. Would the tournament strategy blogs be good for someone like me.

Just want to thank you, Doug Polk...for making these "tutorials" entertaining and insightful. I'm not a high stakes poker player (yet), but your information has helped me to win my home game ($360) and a nightly game ($500 w/$40 buy-in) over the last week. Like any form of gambling, we all go on streaks...but with the knowledge and insight I'm getting from you, I'm feeling more confident. Cheers and much continued success, sir!!

Doug Polk, great vid! but how about bet sizes, knowing how much to bet and getting the most value per chip is jus as important as knowing when to bet at all, and it also a good way to fine tune your betting variance based on the strength of the range of hands your repping vs what your actually holding..idk sounds like a good topic for a video though

Sometimes you should fold the nuts to balance your strategy... If you always stay in the pot when you have the nuts, your opponent won’t think you’re capable folding the nuts and will put you on being too good of a player and won’t try to bluff you off the nuts... So work in some folds with your nut hands occasionally, preferably face up...

    • @mylesstrickland4210
      @mylesstrickland4210 6 років тому +18

That's the stupid thing I've ever heard why would anyone ever fold the nuts?? Then it just shows your opponent that your a moron. Maybe fold a medicore hand and show your opponent but to fold the stone cold nuts??? That has to be the stupidest thing I've ever heard of in my life.

does the first one apply to microsteaks, i think in that hand if my opponenet had top pair i dont think he would ever fold, i see how the bluff could work now you point it out, but i think it will only work if the guy is relatively intelligent and understands that top pair is uestionable enough when someone bets like that on a small card, a fish with top pair might not even stop consider he might be worse.

Few thoughts. I think it tells a bit that Doug is a heads up expert. In that format it’s absolutely vital to mix up your game to not be predictable so they can’t work you out. You need a randomising factor for some decisions, eg if you fold 70% and call 30% a river all in with a medium hand where bluffing is a reasonable chance, then select a way so you don’t over call those situations. Almost all your decisions can’t be 100% one way.The opposite is lower stakes tournaments online where they move you around quite a lot. There you might as well play strong ABC poker and try and target the overly loose or passive players when you can. You really maximise your betting of good hands and avoid too much bluffing, as many people can call with relatively little. Those are the two extremes, in between, say a 6 handed cash table but still lower stakes, your gonna have to mix it up some but generally patient poker can win out. You can get an idea on who looks more like the guy who only bets when he has it vs the guy who bluffs quite a lot. And this make your decision on when to call a big all in on that.

9:27 and pause. It looks like Vanessa Selbst has Doug Polk in a headlock.

I often do well in poker at the beginning, but find it very hard to close out. Idk. Is it better to be conservative at the end and let the lower chip stacks take each other? Idk even know.

You can't talk about "closing out" like it's a sport. Stacks get shallower, variance get higher, people bust more frequently, including you. It's math.

MCFoultier “closing out” as in when there are 3-4 players left. Blinds are higher. Each hand is important and you can’t play as loosely as you do at the beginning. I’m saying I haven’t discovered the balance.

@@kbyrd4840 you should play looser though. Not less loose.

    Doug-
Is it true that in cash games, most of the time upon entering a pot, you should be raising? Thanks

Brad Wildin It’s great that you want to learn, but Doug isn’t the best guy to ask.

Brad Wildin I would disagree, but even if you’re right, he does a terrible job of explaining his thinking. Perhaps he just wants to mislead the masses to keep things juicy for pros like himself. Either way, my point remains. He can’t be trusted.
