    I never understood why there are people who dont do both. I mean unless you are a bodybuilder working out for a competition, you dont need to focus only on specific muscle groups. I do pushups, I deadlift, I do jumping jacks, I bench press. All of these things are beneficial.

      I am a mma fighter and combat sports trainers always prefer body weights because we need power not strength we also need explosiveness and weights usually are a waste of time for us and sometimes make certain fighters sluggish body weights are preferred for power and free weights for strength

    • @FatManJackson
      @FatManJackson 2 роки тому +16

      @@uziasif2425 yeah but weights themselves still dont exclude you from training explosive power. They can be very beneficial. I used to train MMA a couple of years aswell and we did for example sometimes load our squats with comfortable, but heavy enough weights to do jumping squats. It was not a static movement, but allowed us to train explosiveness in the legs, which can really help transfer power from the ground into our punch. Same goes for using 2 or 3 pound dumbbells as resistance weight to increase your striking speed.
      Also when it comes to the ground game you will need to have a strong grip and strength. Of course for finishing the job technique is more important, but to get someone down in the first place wrestlers do very much appreciate having enough strength to overpower the opponent to even get to that point.
      So like I said, you can not demonize one or the other and especially not when you talk about sports in general. And for people who just want to be healthy or have everyday strength both of these in combination are best. When you are relocating, you have to carry heavy furniture. When you have to catch a train, you have to run fast. Balance is everything.

    They are two sides of the same coin. Bodyweight exercises are things you do with your body, and it is practical. Bodyweight exercises give you the capabilities to do more free-weight exercise. Free-weight exercise can give you the power have higher bodyweight power. Of course, there are exceptions.

      Since we're at it, I can almost lift twice my body weight and can deadweight more than twice. I'm no bodybuilder not gym member . I do casual exercises, mainly intense and short ones. Shocking my body out of the blue (less than 5min; 2-3 times a week) and long periods of rests(days

    It always depends, more absolute strength transfers automatically to more athleticism no matter if done with bodyweight or free weights.
    Isolations can also translate to more overall strength if used to strengthen weak links.
    There is no straight answer, if you're a serious athlete you better use all tools available to you.

    Way I've always seen and experienced it, calisthenics are a slower build of muscle, but you work your muscles in conjunction, while lifting builds muscle faster, but if you don't vary it properly then doing certain activities will be held up cause certain muscles are strong while others are neglected. Doing both helps keep everything fairly balanced.

      bro dont do that shit, do you know that you can lowr the degree of dificulty of EVERY calisthenics exercise?
      For example if standard pushups are too hard for you you, you can simply raise the surface where you put your hands, ie instead of putting your feet and hands on the floor, you put your feet on the floor and your hands on a table for example.
      Playing with things like that can lower or increase the difficulty of any bodyweight exercise pretty accuratelly. That being said, i personally think that the argument of "calisthenics is bad because you cant "add more weights" or remove them" is kinda flawed.
      Finally, i highly recommend the book "you are your own gym" to learn everything you need to know about different training formats for calisthenics.

      As a side note be careful with this method. If you just use any old backpack and keep up-ing the weight then you could do yourself more harm than good. Get a decent hiking backpack or a surplus army kit bag. The kind that have the back brace and belt. And make sure you can stand straight while wearing it. If you have to lean forward or slouch to bear the load then you're doing yourself more harm than good. Personally I just skip having to think about that sort of thing by using a weight vest for even distribution but the trade off is cost and eventually a lower weight cap if that's a major factor to you.

    I like mixing up both!
    For example, I do Push+Legs, Pull+Abs & the “Ecstatic Day”
    In push & leg I prefer using weights because I want my chest & legs to get stronger but do mix it up with a set of one arms push-ups too.
    For Pull & Abs I use body weights because it’s more practical & beneficial to do pull-ups but I do rolls with free weights.
    & the “Ecstatic Day” is basically Arms+Shoulders day, to make them look bigger & stronger with mix of dips + chin-ups & triceps press + biceps curls, & for shoulders I just lift something heavy up & down

      Try pistol and shrimp squats mate i I am also calisthenics fans coming from weight lifting , even I can squat my bodyweight for reps I can't do even one pistol.Because pistol require balance , flexibility and most importantly tremedous amount of strength.So you understand what I'm trying to say here.Dont get me wrong I agree on deadlift and even squat to a some degree but you can make your squats harder by simply changing to harder variation.

      Aras Küçükyalçın Yes pistol squats is good for leg strenght. But Barbell quats and deadlift strengthens the back(spinal erectors and quad lumborum). I'm trying to find a calisthenic equivalent of that back strengthening. Any suggestion? Hyperextensions are not enough

      Try hamstring bridges mate , they are realy working hamstrings and also spinal erectors and glutes.There are harder variations of bridges if you find easy ( one leg , raised etc). And there are several exercises like one legged bodyweight deadlift, back levers, and harop curls..Search them and you will understand what I'm trying to say

      +janet sotelo I know but whenever a calisthenics guy goes up against a bodybuilder in a competition the calisthenics guy usually owns at pull ups but slows down when doing weighted squats and bench press and the body builder catches up. Calisthenics makes you control body weight but they don't prepare you for controlling other weights heavier than yourself. I'm not saying you NEED weights to get really strong but even veteran calisthenics guys have many underdeveloped muscles because you can't do isolation movements with calisthenics

    I liike switching between both:
    During winter time or when outside is limited due to weather or time schedule, I focus on free weights at the gym, try to increase power and muscle by doing heavy weight lifting. Bad side is that over time (5-6 months) your body starts to hurt a bit, muscle need more time to recover and your overall nervous system and even joints start to feel exhausted due to the higher pressure
    At that time i switch to calestetics (mostly during early spring and summer). Some say muscle growth is very limited here, but i think this is a good way to "relax" your whole body and have it recover faster between sessions and pain from the heavy weights is gradually also lifted. Also this type of training cements your gains and you get more used to the muscle you have now
    It is becoming your new basement for when you go back to weight lifting
    By doing this, I am able to grow steadily, not super quick, without suffering overtraining from heavy weights or undertraining by doing only calestetics

    Well, as a XC and track runner in high school and into the military, I always focused on running and calisthenics. Body weight training with barely any actual gym time. I was in super shape, just not strong looking. Nice abs, but not big at all. 150-165 lbs during those years. Now, I'm 25, a Veteran and started lifting. I was tired of seeing myself in the mirror (for what the pandemic and laziness and mild depression did to me, flabby, no abs, not built etc. Now I go to the gym 5-7 times a week. And I run as well. Sometimes run 2 miles to the gym, then work out, then run home. But yeah, im doing the weight lifting cuz I wanna be bigger. A leaner. And better looking. Its a huge confidence booster knowing that when you walk into a place, bar or whatever and knowing that right now, you are in great shape and ppl notice. May not be the biggest or hottest person in the room, but I know I'm one of them. Thats a great feeling. And instead of going home after work and thinking "what am I gonna eat tonight? What am I gonna play on xbox for hours and hours? Nope. Nowni think, "what am I gonna do at the gym today? Can I squeeze in a run before the sun goes down first? PS. I signed up for a town 5k race. 1,000 plus ppl ran it. I came in 7th after not running a 5k in years. Not an amazing time, only 21:50 for a time. But hey, I'm doing it and happy I did. Its summertime almost and I can't wait to get bigger and stronger. Maybe will find a beautiful, funny nerdy girl who won't leave me without explanation this time, but thats a different story. And I'm starting to ride my motorcycle. That's just cool. Is got flames on it 🔥🔥. Rant over. Sorry haha love you guys

    I think Calisthenics has a kind of aesthetic to it that free weights exercises do not. I like the idea that I'm the master of my own body and being able to lift oneself is one way to demonstrate that mastery. But aesthetics is a very subjective thing and I don't claim that Calisthenics are any better if your goal is to be strong and fit.

    I've spent the last 8 years going to the gym most of the year and spending summer by using the bars and going to the gym only rarely. I think it's important to note that for us people that love the gym, love working out and love being fit It is not a debate, exercises are exercises, in the end of the day if your goal is not being a profesional at something but you do it be the best version of yourself you will do both, I don't even see how you could be an overall atheltic person if you don't both lift free weights AND do body weight...
    However.. I feel It's important to note that what you described regarding free weights is more of a bodybuilding perspective, when in reality lifting weights is also olympic and power lifting, It's NOT just about building muscle, It's about building ATHLETICISM, SPEED, TECHNIQUE, STRENGTH, POWER, FLEXIBILITY, COORDINATION and so much more. Just thought to clear that up since you kind of painted lifting weights as this bodybuilding thing, when in fact calisthenics can be almost as effective at building muscle but are not even comparable when we talk about strength, power and speed.

      I understand what you're saying but can't you be more polite about it ? There is no need to put somebody in a category... I have seen skinny people with terrible form, I have also seen bodybuilders with terrible form... At the end of the day, when you don't know how to perform the exercise properly and when you use more weight than you can handle then you will fail ! Everybody fails actually.... There is a point in time when you start ego lifting than doing what's right for your body. But to get to the point, I love both calisthenics and free weights ! Calisthenics are a bit difficult if you're overwerweight but that's the beauty of it, you get to use your own weight ! From the other hand, free weights are mostly accessible by anyone. You get to choose the weight that you want to lift and if you are a pro you can go harder and heavier ! The problem with calisthenics is that when you master doing push ups and other exercise how can you get more gains ? I mean, when you are in the gym you can use heavier weights than the ones you can handle but what happens when you mastered most of the calisthenic exercises ?

    • @ChrisAssassinGamer
      @ChrisAssassinGamer 7 років тому

      ***** so you mean that calisthenics don't build muscle like weight lifting does ? Yeah I understand that calisthenics work your form and your movement but what do you mean that they don't build muscle directly ? When I do pull ups, chin ups and push ups I find it more difficult to perform these exercises but the gains that I get are worthwhile ! And I completely agree with you, trainees will never reach a point where they can perform every calisthenic exercise, except if you are a pro or a gymnast that is... But that's my point, a normal person only does regular push ups, chin ups, pull ups... etc and at some point you will master these exercises and how will you move on ? You will keep doing the same routine or you will jump to weight lifting and become better ?

    • @ChrisAssassinGamer
      @ChrisAssassinGamer 7 років тому

      ***** Sure, but I don't thing I will ever do handstand push ups. At least not in the level that I am right now... And well, not all people have the money to build a proper pull up bar or know places with pull up bars... I'm talking about thing you can do at home like push ups and at some point you will do your maximun reps so wouldn't you have to start lifting weights so you can build more muscle or will you repeat the same routine ? Eventually you will get tired of doing the same push ups every day... But yeah I agree that gymnasts perform better than bodybuilders, in my opinion they are also stronger in what they do.

    What I like about calisthenics is that as you put more effort and dedication into it, it will automatically adjust its difficulty depending on how far you are in it. Since the gaining of muscle would usually mean a gain in body weight, calisthenics would become harder to do as you get heavier

      If you'd stimulate the power muscles often and eat big, you will get bigger.
      If you'd stimulate stabilizers often (*relatively*) and other muscles which don't tend to grow a lot, and you eat like you always did (say you're skinny), you won't go up in weight.
      Do your research.
      Mass growth and big-approach muscle building is perfectly doable in calisthenics.

      Doing various calisthenics exercises, a person can increase the strength of very local tissues. Calisthenics does bring out fibers which might have been dorment in lifting, even if you do every exercise in the book of free weight. In the book of calisthenics there are simply other exercises which target the same place, and where in calisthenics you don't get the tonnage, you compensate with muscle inconvinience and angles which stimulate the muscles to the limit as well.

    I was a small kid. My dad always made me do calisthenics as a punishment. So, that’s what I grew up with. My physical stature stayed small but I packed a punch. I would be a target for a bully but I would destroy all the bullies in sports and PE.
    I believe calisthenics are way better that free weight. Free weight is good for looking big, but not that practical. First time I tried free weight was in Highschool. My coach would see me excel in pull-ups and push-ups, but I could barely lift the bar.
    Eventually, when I got the basis and knowledge of free weights,I was already leaving Highschool. I went back to doing only calisthenics and not one exercise became any easier.
    After calisthenics became to easy for me (I could do a set of 100 of most exercise with 2 breaks) I started adding weights to it. Weights could be a backpack while doing push-ups . It doesn’t have to cost much money,
    The most practical one would be calisthenics.

    I'm more of a calisthenics guy. I have a passion for freerunning (parkour) so it seems mor natural. Of course I think you should do both no matter your goal, I personally emphasise calisthenics.

      You can supplement one with the other to help reach your goals. Only thing is that in order to really isolate a muscle you have to get really creative with calisthenics since most calisthenics are compound exercises. Free weights make that easy. Calisthenics are way harder in my opinion.

    As someone who alternates between both I see this as an absolute win
