Earlier this year, we introduced you to Taylor's newest body shape, the Grand Theater-- a small scale, all solid-wood, American made acoustic guitar. For lovers of the GS Mini, this came as a very welcome offering; however it left a lot of questions-- namely, what's next for the GT line? We're very excited to share that THIS is what's next for the line: the GT811 and GT811e. The GT811 combines the Grand Theater body with the appointments of the 800 series, including a sitka spruce and East Indian rosewood tonewood combination and beautiful inlays. Take a look and a listen to Chris McKee runnin' down the specs and visit our website to learn more!

I bought a GT a week and a half ago, and I love it. I was struggling with a guitar I purchased in 1972 and never really learned how to play. During this "lockdown" I decided to try once more and struggled again, even with a live instructor. Part of my problem was scaled length, I think. The old guitar has a 25 7/8" scale length and when I had it set up (after pulling it from the basment) it had a set of 13s on it. After watching your presentations on the GT UA, I went to the GC in Wichita and played the GT and a GS mini, both great little guitars. The GT played bigger, so the next day I went back and bought it. I'm not a man to giggle, but my fingers did. I'm glad I purchased the GT UA then, as it's much more affordable, and therefore justifiable, than the GT811. Thank you for these awesome presentations and comparisons, Chris. I'm going to be a nag and add my name to the the many requestors about you putting tabs together for the delicate song you typically play in comparisons. Thanks again.
Super thorough and informative as usual! Thank you!
Played one of these at a local shop last week. I think it’s becoming my dream guitar. I’m never comfortable playing a full size dread, but mini guitars don’t always get that big sound when your wailing on them. Played and sounded so nice.
I love the Taylor 800 series and I thought I'd buy an 814ce but this has given me another option thank you for showcasing this guitar
Just as I was about to pull the trigger on a new guitar, Taylor makes me think about saving up even longer for this beauty 😍
Now they have a GT Koa. What a beauty and priced to match!
Which you end up buying??🙂
Really like the new fingerstyle version of your demo tune in E. Fine tone in the 811.
Great demonstration and playing! Looks and sounds like a really nice guitar for fingerstyle.
Great review, Chris....and, now I know what purfuling means!
Absolutely beautiful great demo I must have a Taylor!! I’ll Get through my recovery. Then I must have a Taylor not sure which but I’ll be owning a Taylor
Beautiful sounding guitar! Love Taylor!
That gt811e sounds amazing!
Chris, man, you gotta teach how to play the songs that you always play. Are soooo gooooooood!!!🤩😍
Pleeaaaase!!!!!
So beautiful to hear 🙂
Chris,
Thank you so much for playing a same thing every time. I’ve been binging Taylor videos and because you play the same thing each time it’s WAY easier to hear the unique distinctions between models & tone woods. Love your content! Keep it up and have a great weekend!
It. Is. Great! I feel so good with the GT body! I bought a GTe mahogany first, very intimate and “in tune” with myself, and now, after tried other luxury brands, I’m back to the GT with this super-wonderful model. Too easy. Too sound (for the size). The comfort in playing it makes you play for loooong and with great satisfaction. Great GT, thanks Taylor!
I was wanting a GS Mini with these appointments. I know that sounds crazy but I love the feel of my GS Mini. I may have to try this out.
I’m onboard!
I really hope they put this C-Class bracing in their other series so they can increase overtones richness they lost with the V-Class bracing. Having a 816CE or 826CE with this C-Class bracing will be an absolute winner. I believe they really can engineer something like that.
I love Taylor guitars I own seven of them I also have a 1980 Martin D-28 the only martin I have ever loved but still doesn't sound as good as any of my Taylor's,I've owned in the past several other brands of guitars but I've fell in love with Taylor's sound
Great review and it sounds great but can it take a strumming like playing pinball wizard by The Who or is one of those guitars that you can only finger pick on like in video. Thank you, love all the info you provided in your videos.
okay. I purchased the 811e. I know - previously I said it was too expensive, so I purchased a used one. For a smaller player, this is a wonderful guitar. Very nice for finger style and fine for strumming too - nothing too intense. If your hands or shoulders bother you, this might be your guitar.
Awesome review, as always! Love the GT, but for the price point I expect the neck and headstock binding + hard-shell case like the other 800 series models.
I have the mahogany GT and would love this as well, but can’t justify this price. Maybe I’ll get one used someday.
So many choices! I let go of a Taylor 12-fret due to its heavt bass and overtones. The GT811 looks perfect, with a relatively short scale but rosewood/spruce to balance the sound.
I defiantly hear more bass in the rosewood.
Rosewood and Spruce does ring like a Bell
I have a Taylor 712 with the same tone woods as this 811- sounds great and easy to play. But this GT 811 looks more comfortable. Hope to try one one day. $3000 too pricey for me.
Check out a Maestro guitar from Singapore...$3K for this is way too much, IMHO.
I love Taylor for their philosophy on sustainability, but I just can't get along with the sounds they produce.
Great demo/review, Chris! I hope you reach your 100K sub goal! I have been subbed for quite some time, and I really enjoy the reviews. I do learn a lot from watching you, so thank you! From foggy San Francisco, California, - I would like to wish a Merry Christmas to all of the staff at Alamo, and to you and your family, Chris! 🐰❤️🎸🎵🤝✌️
I agree 100%. Their philosophy is something I back, but I dont get a long with their tone. There are always way better sounding guitar for the price.
Actually, I don’t mind the GT811nomenclature even though it’s redundant. It’s helpful, especially for people that are “new” to Taylor. They could do this with the other models: GS, GO, GP, GC, GT, GA, AD....
Actually prefered the sound of the urban ash at the end. Maybe because of the tonewood or Maybe because it have gotten alot of play time in the store 😂
Nice demo Chris. I can't believe I'm listening to this at 5 AM. I think the 811e had a more defined bass. Wonder if they' put a torrified Sitka top on it.
Top seems to light in color for that, torrefied has a darker tan to it.
@@gygabyte5691 true. I WANT one with a torrified top.
I have a 2016 816e and I absolutely love it. Therefore the GT811e looks very familiar to me, trust me 800 series looks and feels even better irl. The only thing that bothers me a bit is the lack of neck binding.
Seems that the comparable across brands would be the Martin 000 junior. Smaller body, similar nut width and scale length. 000 junior solid wood (sapale) back and sides. Mexican made makes it more affordable but curious about the tone comparison.
Looks nice and glad to see they took GT to higher level. I'm a bit confused why they chose an 8 series classification if not sticking to 8 series features. If paying that much money it should have full 8 series features, for example neck binding and hard case. They will sell for sure but unsure of popularity for the price compared to say urban ash model. TBD. Either way I'm excited about the GT line but still skeptical.
They already do a 400R with rosewood back & sides (not a 411 yet, but say, 414R etc); it looks more like that than an 800.
Similar specs (like the scale length) to the Wee Lowden -- how do you think it compares?
Wow, this is not even updated in the website. I wish i was in the USA just so that I could buy from you :)
I hope Taylor comes out with more Grand Concert American Dreams. They had a black one (sitka top, urban ash back/sides) at my local GC that I almost bought. But I was in the market for a mahogany and bought the Martin 000-15M. If that model would have had a mahogany top, it would have been a no-brainer. The Grand Concert is a nice size for me. They did not have a GT model in stock, so they must be selling!
I think you are referring to AD12e with Ebony back and sides?
@@jjbut1 Yes, that's it. Thought the back and sides were ash, but looks like it is ebony. Felt great, and the sound was awesome. A little pricey compared the the other ADs, but I liked it.
Wow. It’s got some balls
This guitar really sings.
Any idea if this body shape will make its way into the 100 or 200 series?
Ditto: which is why I didn't jump on the GT Ash to see what they might do next...now If only they would this 12-Fret!!
PS: Ash has more jangle, but the Rose a bit more bottom.
I’m looking at Breedlove concertina for that reason. All 12 frets and about the same size as this GT (a little smaller than a concert size).
I own a Taylor GS Mini Wallnut and Koa Plus, a 612 CE 12 fret and a K14CE BE.
I tried quite a few other Taylors at stores and Taylor Europe.
Sound wise I love the 717 BE and 9 series BE, which are all rosewood and for me these would be a great addition to what I already have.
So I hoped a bit on a Rosewood version of the GT and here it is.
Compared to the Urban Ash, the Rosewood version sounds much more vibrant in your video.
But that pricing... I can buy at about the same price range a 717 BE of which I already love the sound and play ability.
I am aware they are different guitars and that I have to play it first before making a final judgement.
But have difficulties to understand this price level, while other Taylor guitars with the same tone woods seem to be more high end at the same price level.
I love your reviews Chris, they are so informative without becoming to complex to understand (even for a Dutch guy like me).
And the beautiful pieces you play cover the whole fret board, so you get a good idea how tones will sound over the whole neck.
Thanks for doing it like this, I appreciate it very much.
I have been really wanting 814e. Or even 814ce. But now I'm wondering if GT 811e is a better choice. Is there any way you can make a comparison video with GT 811e vs 814e? 814ce would be fine if you can't find the 814e. I know it's discontinued. Thank you.
Is this like a 000 or 00 size?
I think the rosewood has a little more charm to it’s sound
Hello Mr. Alamo could you please demonstrate your musical gift by playing a vintage Stratocaster through a modern Marshall , an overdrive pedal ... Thanks Chris .... ✨🎸✨🕎
I like this body shape. I like much about it. Of course it’s hard to tell through a UA-cam video but sound seems quite nice.
But what are the specs? Lower bout, upper bout, body length, scale length, string spread at the saddle, body depth? All of these would be nice to know.
Frankly, I’m a little confused by Taylor’s direction however. What is the purpose of this guitar in the lineup? And after several years of hype around the V Class bracing architecture why veer away from it on this guitar? Is this a trial balloon? Is Taylor doing some consumer testing to determine yet another direction for Andy to take? At some point it becomes brand and model diluting to load the lineup with so many models that retailers and customers are confused. Well, that’s just my opinion of course. Pretty guitar though and as usual great demo playing...
It has the same body specifications as the original GT that was released a few months ago if you’re able to research it. I don’t know those specs off the top of my head, but my local Taylor dealer just got one recently and I really like it. As Chris says in this video it is bigger than a GS-Mini (which I already own and love), but smaller than a Taylor Grand Concert body. I think they have at least two other videos on the original GT.
In regards to the bracing in this guitar I saw a video that Taylor put out with the release of the GT Series where Andy Powers said that the bracing of this guitar is specific to this body size because the V-style bracing didn’t work well for this smaller body.
Wil there be a 811CE?
Does the new one have a gloss top? Thank you!
Full gloss body
👍
What do you about new Taylor 414ce V-class limited edition Sinker Redwood haven’t seen a review about it
That guitar is an exclusive to Guitar Center. We don't have access to it.
Dear friends, I’m trying to decide between a Gs mini koa and Gt UA. I’m trying to understand which one will be easier on the fingers and barre chords. Any advice? Unfortunately the store is only open for online ordering where I am, due to the COVID situation. Thanks
I tried a GT811e and owned a koa plus -- the GT is easier to play. The koa is about the same as other taylors I've played as far as ease of barre chords.
Beautiful guitar and size.. too bad i will never have enough money o buy it.
How tall is the host here? This doesn’t look like a very small body guitar
I don't see it on the site. I would love to play one
Should be up now.
www.alamomusic.com/taylor-gt811e-grand-theater-acoustic-electric-guitar-spruce-rosewood/
It kinda looks like a Takamine NEX body shape.
I'm a little confused about the Urban Ash. I know about the sustainable aspect stuff. But it was billed as just as good (just different) as the more "exotic" woods they import - same with the eucalyptus bridge. But this new GT is double the price and really only different in regard to wood and a glossy finish. So is the Urban Ash considered an entry-level guitar material that doesn't stack up to mahogany?
please a 12-fret (slotted headstock) GT or an all mahogany.. hehe.
Early this year Andy Powers said a 12 fret would be difficult with the C bracing, on Taylor Prime Time Tuesday evenings.
@@texhaines9957 booo.. lolz jk. that's too bad tho.
I’m hoping for 600 style maple back and sides.
Really? $3k? Aerocase? Missing features of other 800 Series? I love Taylor, but their pricing structure is out of control.
As long as there is a flock of gear sheep out there willing to buy them, I'll be finding better or as good options for half the price.
I actually prefer the urban ash in the sound comparison and it's half the price of the gt811e.
I do not like Taylor's, and agree the prices are astronomical. Try a Maestro from Singapore. 🐰🎸🎵🤝✌️
True, you can find AllSolid great sounding comparable guitars from Cort, Ibanez, Walden, Faith, Eastman .... for maybe 4 times cheaper in some cases.
Not sure if it’s worth 3k...but it’s worth what ppl are willing to pay for. I’ve owned Eastmans, Larrivee and Taylor’s and if you look for used it’s always going to a better option. The all solid wood Taylor’s are somewhere below boutique lines like bougeois and above Budget lines like Eastman. This guitar is probably worth around 2k to me.
An aero case,.. that's ridiculous for a $3000. guitar!
Even a lot of $1400.00 martin guitars comes with a hardcase.
duuuuuuuuudeeee....
It's a nice little guitar but way too expensive compared to the competition in the Travel type guitars ... 3.5 k???? for example, 5 times cheaper, in the 700 $ price point you get an All Solid Electro Acoustic from Eastman ACTG2E - Ovangkol or 500 $ All Solid ACTG1 - Sapele. Hand Built by individual luthiers not machines... Taylor will never be able to compete with those price points. I would look around the market and find the best bang for the buck. Maybe you don't like China, ok another option for around 1.5 k or less, would be Furch Little Jane that it's World class travel guitar foldable in a back pack that you can actually fly with overhead and have it on your motorcyle. So, there are better options out there, but if you like the Taylor just get what you like and can afford.
tv
Dream guitar. But I’ll never buy it at that price point. Hey Taylor there is a huge economic problem!
It'll be a hard pass for me on gt811e
Big disappointment that a 3k guitar (and being an 800 series) doesn't come with a hard case. Taylor should rethink this strategy. I have 5 Taylors and the only one without the hard case is the GS mini that I allow to sit out. But the others are always in the case when not in use.
Yeah nah.... I’ll stick with a Martin for that price. 0018 would age and sounds a lot better.
my $200 guitar with saddle, nut and pin change sounds just as good.. lol Respect to American made beautiful Taylor guitars though. 👍
Finally, taylor brought back C bracing. V bracing sucks.
I love Taylor guitars but they are really gettin otta hand with trying to squeeze money out of you. Taylor=Greed driven.
Why don’t just post the specs next to him y just simply play…imo
This is a time when money is tight, people are losing their jobs, the pandemic is getting worse and the economy is spiraling downward because of wasteful government policies and Taylor is peddling another guitar that will cost you three thousand dollars plus with a gig bag. Are you serious Taylor? ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS TAYLOR???!!!!
