Taylor GT Guitar Showdown: GTe Urban Ash vs. GT811e vs. GTK21e

  • In this video from Taylor’s Guitar Showdown series, Taylor’s Aaron Dablow and Daniel Fraire play and compare three acoustic guitar models featuring the Grand Theater (GT) body style. Each model is distinguished by a different tonewood pairing: the GTe Urban Ash (ash and spruce), the rosewood and spruce GT 811e, and the all-koa GT K21e. Aaron and Daniel explain and demonstrate the unique sonic attributes of each guitar.
About the GT body style: A scaled-down version of Taylor’s large Grand Orchestra body shape, the GT blends the relaxed touch and intimate feel of a smaller guitar with the bold, punchy sound of a much bigger guitar. Made with all-solid tonewoods for maximum tonal complexity and musicality, all GT models also feature C-Class bracing, which adapts the tone-enhancing power of Taylor’s patented V-Class® bracing architecture to the guitar’s more compact size in a way that pumps out more volume, longer sustain and greater depth in the bass range.

I did it! (See my previous post.) I picked up a new GT811e today at my local Taylor dealer, Wakefield Music Company in Rhode Island. Happy new guitar day to me...

811 Hands down. Loved the clarity and overtone’s. Well balanced and rich sounding. Hmmm, now I want one!

As an engineer, this video was *perfect* for highlighting the characterstics that wood imparts to a guitar. Great job isolating that one variable and keeping everything else constant (same body shape, same player, same song). I liked koa better for strumming, but rosewood better for fingerpicking. If I didn't just get a beautiful 512ce-12fret LTD, I would've definitely wanted to check out the GT shape! Great vid Taylor, thanks!

Urban Ash for the price, 811 for the sound and K21 for the looks but sound is nice too but dang it looks good.

I tried it today, urban ash is very loud. Lot of rock kind of mids. If you are singing on top of it you may have the mids covering your voice. Nice, sound and a good guitar.

I loved the sound of the Urban Ash for fingerstyle, which is primarily what I'd want it for. Nice demo.

811e for sure. It's a perfect combination of rich low register and crisp upper register

As my preference is for Indian rosewood, the sound of the 811 really caught my attention. It's a great sound given its size. Having a GS Mini with the laminated rosewood, I could hear the difference with the solid woods.

Best video I've ever seen to bring out the different sound you get from different tonewoods. All three sound great and each will suit someone's playing style better than the others. I thought the 811 sounded like the "grand piano" of the three and would be best in an acoustic setting. A luxury to have in your home! I liked the Urban Ash, and suspect it would be easier to record and mix with other instruments. But I'm a bit too old-fashioned for hardwood tops like koa, being a fan of cedar for live playing and recording.

My thoughts: the GTe Urban Ash would be great if the singer has a lower or raspy voice or if the guitar was being played with other instruments. The GT811e would be great for a soloist - maybe someone with a strong voice. The GTK21e would be good for background music for a movie or just in a small intimate indoor setting like a coffee shop or restaurant.

You forgot to mention that each of these three guitars are in a very, I mean, Very different price level. I can't imagine anyone willing to spend around $1300 (urban ash) considering also the $4700 koa model.

  • @zupfheini

No question: It's just as Daniel described it: For fingerstyle Urban Ashe can't keep up with the other two ones, but it's not easy to decide, which should be my favourite. The Koa model has a surprisingly charming sound with nice overtones with this more intimate, delicate sound. So - in view of the fact, that I just own 2 IR models - I would prefer the Koa one.
But if I'd be a strummer the Urban Ashe model would immediately return into focus - here it scores with it's warm, open, midrange focused sound. Great comparison!

All were beautiful guitars! Each one was unique. I liked the dry sound of the urban ash and the balance of the koa, not to mention the baby doll look. My fav though was the rosewood. So Rich!!

First off - GREAT demonstration of the 3 tonewoods! Daniel's playing was terrific and Aaron nailed the descriptions better than anyone I've seen. The recordings seemed accurate, and from them I could tell that the spruce/rosewood 811 was the best studio performer. It absolutely loved the microphone and delivered a clear, full and balanced voice. Instant gratification!
But hold on,.. The K21 had something else, just below the surface. It's very compressed, especially with finger style, so you have to turn the volume up 2 clicks to really appreciate its subtle tonalities and overall richness. Even before it was really "broken in", I felt it to be the more expressive guitar, maybe even a little mysterious sounding. Daniel was hinting at this.
I guess with Koa, the real payoff requires a little more digging and a little more time.
Thanks for putting together this particular Taylor "showdown" All your products sounded great.

All 3 really unique! I just bought the GTe Urban Ash. My GS Mini won me over to the comfort of playing a smaller sized guitar. Love the tone of my new Urban Ash. A little easier for me to play than my larger 324 and 615.

  • @jackiet4575

Vibrant highs with the rosewood, it rings well. The ash is more complex in the midrange, good all around sound. The koa will open up more as you play it. I have a koa 224Ke and I luv it. I also have the 714e and luv that one as well . They all sound different but all very nice!

The Rosewood / Spruce 811e would be my choice. The Urban Ash is aesthetically barren. The Koa will probably open up and become more lovely with time. I would buy a new 811 and look forward to a used Koa after someone else broke it in!

I’ve played all 3 at Wildwood Guitars and the 811e came out on top hands down. Rich tone, best responsiveness to both strumming and fingerpicking. EQ-wise my vocals sit perfectly within the rosewood/spruce combination. However, I am curious as to how the K22e will sound after it opens up.

In the UK a GTK21e will cost £4000 plus the cheapest K24ce builders edition will cost £4900...if you can afford that type of money for an extra £900 it would be the K24 builders edition out of those 3 the urban Ash wasn't in the same league, I thought the 811 was the Strummer and the K21 was the picker...I kept jumping to hear the guitars next to each other you can really tell the difference in tone

  • @joepassofaro8196

No question, the 811 has a more rich, nuanced sound. All three are good but the 811 takes the prize. I was really hoping for the Koa to come out on top as I love the look but sound matters first.

the GTe urban ash sounds so punchy, that it might actually be perfect for most scenarios. when playing plugged in with a full band or unplugged either outdoors or in a room full of people singing, the GTe can punch through all of the other noises or sounds.
in the recording studio or accompanying a single vocalist, the other two would definitely be a better choice for sure! GTe gets my final vote due to the price and accessibility.

Rosewood 811 ftw! Cocobolo GT would be amazing!!! A GT w/ cedar or lutz would have so much tonal complexity…a man can dream! A cedar top GT w/ cocobolo would be a finger stylist dream, throw in an arm rest too! And silent satin finish! I’m excited just thinking about it!

This seems like a useless exercise at first, a Taylor, unless damaged, will always sound good. I've owned so many different Taylors, that I've been fortunate enough to share them with my children and grandchildren, They all have sweet spots that don't require a lot of searching to find. Frankly, my favorite has always been the one that is in my hands at the moment meat touches wood, steel, and bronze..

Why is there a mic used on the guitar during the video? All these are "e" models, indicating they have the Taylor electronic pickup systems installed. Why not use the internal pickup?
