Manipulating Kids and Destroying a Legacy | Transformers Earthspark Review

  • Transformers Earthspark is a loose sequel, a splinter, to the original transformers animated series (G1) that aired lets just say... many years go. This transformers cartoon takes a progressive, woke, take that could go good or bad. While bringing legacy transformers back in a very new light. Did they go woke and broke or did woke transform the transformers in a unique way? Transform the search page into this video to find out.
I apologize for the video if it seems lacking. Had to cut out voice lines, examples of actions for Optimus, Bumblebee, and Megatron. Examples for things regarding the kids, even positive things, and a very positive section about Soundwave. Transformers Earthspark seems to keep screwing me over even after my spark was extinguished. What Decepticon artists that Viacom and Hasbro is. I also accidentally said Elita instead of Arcee. Entirely my fault. Gonna have to start making a script I suppose.

I have noticed a decrease in comments amount. I was curious on why, asked around, and although some people are claiming that there is a glitch with the comment number total as well with some comments not showing up in general and even disappearing... there's just as big of a possibility that people are reporting comments they don't agree with.
Firstly, if the comments are just plain nasty, profanity filled, insults, ESPECIALLY if they are attacking another person in the comments then yeah report them I don't care. Respect is the biggest rule here. That being said, if they are just disagreeing with you, or with me, then leave them be. They have every right to their opinion and it's definitely not cool to go through and try to censor that. Unless again they're just being hateful to some capacity and even then (to a reasonable point) give them a chance to remedy that.
Second, when it comes to big conversations in the comments, I don't get notified of those individual messages and am not able to babysit them to ensure everyone is being respectful. If i'm not tagged in it, then i'm not going to be aware of it, unless I go searching for it which I don't feel like putting my mental health through. If I see it, i'll respond to it, but besides base comments I'm pretty much left out of this. I'm trusting that you guys have the maturity and intelligence required to acknowledge that we're all humans, with our own opinions, experiences, interpretations, and beliefs. As well as the fact that we all make our own mistakes, and that whether those mistakes are big or small, are mostly subjective based on how every person perceives them.
Just treat each other with respect and don't be censoring people just because they disagree. I can't see reported comments, or decide on their validity, that's entirely UA-cams ballpark as well so I can't restore them once they're gone. In fact UA-cam is actually supposed to if no problem is found with them so hopefully they follow through with that.
Also, when it comes to the end of my video, I will admit that I never handled it as well as I could of. That being said, this isn't an apology, just an acknowledgement. I am autistic, and one of the caveats of that, is that I have two modes. Logical or emotional. I feel emotions far stronger than a normal person in some moments, and those emotions can dictate my actions, whereas other moments I go full Shockwave and that can go very wrong too. It's hard for me to balance but I swear that i'm trying, Just please be patient with me.
My video was unscripted, and that last part, was fueled by emotion as I was speaking. In general though, as I did put some points in there, I did have the logical research to back it up. Comment, separate from this thread, the questions or arguments against me that you have, and I will do my best to respond. Just please do so separate from this comment so they get sent to my "haven't responded" section.
I have since said this better in a different video: ua-cam.com/video/LUBrKiX9DW0/v-deo.html
Thank you. Have a great day!

Or your video got really ironically bigoted in the end and people don't want to mess with that (Because seriously, the content you added to your video would be more troublesome and disturbing to your imaginary kids than a 5 second scene of a ROBOT, saying it doesn't go by Him or Her pronouns, because, you know, it's a robot).

I also have a smallish UA-cam channel and one of the hardest things is trying to manage toxicity in the comments while still allowing for open discussion. But you perfectly summarized everything, how we can and should be allowed to disagree with each other while not crossing lines of respect and decency.
This was just such a mature comment in how you gave guidance to your views and trusted them on how to act. Really impressed by how well you set the tone and example for this comments section especially in what is a very controversial and charged video topic.

Did they not learn about how not to make a "sequel" after Robots in Disguise (2015)? Just because kids watch the show, doesn't mean you can get away with bad writing or treating them like they're stupid and producing the show accordingly.
Produce the show where the kids will watch it again when they're wiser adults, who will then show it to their own kids. Having a show stand the test of time through multiple generations is why franchises are successful and insulting the intelligence of your audience is the antithesis of that.

RID2015 was more like catering to both kids and Prime fans with minimum to NO effort. Also the trend of Hasbro of that time was to basically dumb down everything (look at Age of Extinction's abyssmal toyline) but hey at least it wasn't harmful. Nowadays they are so desperate to intoxicate kids with LGBTQ+ garbage they don't care about anything else. This plus garbage toy quality is why Hasbro is on the brink of death.

If Megatron was portrayed as walking the gray line trying to end the war after seeing so many cybertronians die, I feel it would be better. Optimus could be a older leader who wants this "new" war to end as quick as possible. You could even show him having moral conflictions doing shadier things in alignment with Megatron. Bumblebee could be the hot-headed warrior who doesn't easily forgive Megatron for the horrors he committed. He could still want to fight wanting revenge, but through Optimus he could come to find peace with himself.

@@Nerdsfeed I always thought the rebound of whatever scheme he was trying in War For Cybertron would be perfect, like basically what happened in effect of Optimus in Tf Prime where unleashing the matrix damaged his memory to become Orion again.
Megatron trying to brainwash the Autobots into Decepticons ends up brainwashed himself, maybe from freak accident, maybe a questionable act by an Autobot behind Prime's back to end the war, but the result still really gets to him, optimus' old friend back as he wished to remember him as.
Imagine how it would be if Megatron reverted to when he was still an idealist wanting to revolutionize their flawed system on Cybertron, and maybe become horrified of the path he's led to this moment leading to it becoming a dead planet.
The end could either be Megatron returning to form or staying an ally.
or maybe a bit in between, he doesn't get rebooted a second time but comes to the same conclusion, just that now he can be reminded of who he was and how much their friendship meant.

@@toasterenthusiast8023 I'm not saying kids should be depressed. Teaching kids to never give up is fundamental. But you should do it in a responsible way that makes sense. I mean Transformers is still a ''grounded'' franchise compared to othe sci-fi series like Star Wars. Remember how the kids from prime slowed down zombie Skyquake using Starscream's missile? Or how Jack managed to contact the US army by stealing Silas walkie-talkie and saved everyone using his brain?
Now that makes sense. And it's an optimist message as well.
It's like a situation of someone lost in the wild who is starving. You see a big meal like some kind of bison or buffalo. Do you think you can face him bare hands?
Humans are phisically weaker than apex predators yet we are the dominant species. Why? Due to our strenght? Hell no, due to our brain. Seriously would you rather face the big animal with a stick or build a trap?
That's what modern medias should teach kids: to actually use the brain in order to unlock and improve their true potential so they can deal with hard situations.

@@toasterenthusiast8023 you built an argument around Bumblebee being stuck in "war mode" as you called it earlier. Not so sure that would be a "healthy" thing for kids to learn. When it comes to this though, the "no matter what" part is the issue, because it gives kids a false sense of security when it comes to what they want to do. Showing kids that you can fail at something, mess up, and that's okay too would be a healthier way to present it.

First i'd like to talk about my opinions on the s1 of the show. I agree that bringing G1 into the fold at one was a bold and dumb move. I grew up on G1 so it felt kind of disingenuous. I also partly agree on your opinions on the transformers but thats Arcee not elita1 btw. I disagree on Wheeljack though I thought he seemed too safe here and lacking of the originals charm. I also think that prime wheeljack is too big of a departure but that neither here or there. I think this is the worst Optimus Prime iteration... for s1 anyway but the best Soundwave since G1. Second you are actually right about the last scene in a marketing standpoint. I said it in a response but I work in advertising and the biggest factor is pushing to the consumer with the easiest being kids. Making cereal that's unhealthy and has a memorable commercial, capitalizing off the fact that parents normally say "each your vegetables" by showing kids something opposite. Catchy themes, vibrant colors, bursts, whatever we can do to make kids remember our brand over the competition. I remember COCO Puffs was a hit to my own kids, due to "going cuckoo," and the chocolate explosions. Commercials have competition so we have to fight for attention but something like the quiet themed clip he showed had nothing else to distract kids from the words so it was a golden time to get them to latch onto something. and again im not agreeing that its a bad thing just that its a thing. Great video

I understand if you disagree with me on whether or not that's okay but I appreciate you helping me feel less crazy by backing me up regardless of your stance. Even if we disagree on this issue I hope you'll stick around for future content. I don't aim for political videos at all, just want to make videos about things I'm passionate about, and be 100% real with my audience while I do it. To leave my 2 cents (its quite long) here: Eh after watching it for its 26 episodes. Who cares if theres a single character with "they". It had a good arc for the terrans, older characters are treated as literal legends and any good guy decepticon is essentially figthing for survival.
I like how they dealt with the idea of the outsider and how it shows people are not good or bad just by the label we give them as a group. Even the "good" Megatron gets Karma back for the tyrant he was. A reflection to the consequences for future generations after wars, and the importance of learning from history.
Great animation, good fight choreography that as an outsider has in episode 9 the best composition in any tranformer media far none even Prime which I enjoyed. Although some models like Optimus couldve been better.
Humor was what Id expect for the age its directed to, they embrace the tech obsession of younger generations. They show serious subjects like veterans of war trying to reconcile with younger generations. And how said younger people can help the more grizzled one.
Optimus couldve been better on his involvement but he was alright, Megatron felt like a commander desperate for conflict trying to go into a civilian life while being against methods that go against his original crusade against the system in Cybertron, given his past as a gladiator. All while he's still the single most dangerous character in the show, to the point it is shown the terrans have no chance against him.
Starscream having that selfish outlook but also finding Hashtag as a blank slate willing to believe him not out of foolishness but actual care was nice.
I can probably go on on but the show is about reconciliation, the fact people in the US make so much fuss is seriously kind of downright hilarious. You have the side that argue to their own fault thinking they are talking for people who are not binary when in reality they are making a fool of themselves while pushing agendas. On the other side we have people hiding their opinions behind thins like "the care of children" and oh no that will tramautize them.
Every 6 year old in my street probably already is aware of death and abandoment, by the simple fact they understand, they just dont care. Subjects about the aftermath of senseless hatred is also important to speak about, the "they" character is even told that it is wrong to encapsulate their way of seeing other views as wrong. In comparison to something like Secret Invasion or even Captain Marvel there isnt anything inherently pushing something on one.
The character I mentioned seems to be more a case of the outsider to even the weird terrans, as the thinker that isnt "they" for representaion but more as to the fact it seems to be unable to say what it is since it was born just a few days ago, it also isnt brought back unless it helps further express the idea one should not stay on one mindset, when speaking of the transformation, they say that its more a way to show who you are. I think it was handled as to who one is in profession, with friends and others. That all things you make part of are an expression of one self.
So in short, great show to ease in subjects they'll face when they are 9 or 10, great action, good family mesages, Bumblebee was great as the once student now mentor. The main villain at first was eh but ended up as the culmination of the fear to the outsider. And overall probably one of the best production for Transformers.

See, this is what happens when you focus a Transformers show/movie around the Autobots and/or humans more than the Decepticons, which is more reason to just scrap humans altogether and give us a show about Transformers only, please.
    Warning: Political rant incoming.
Words cannot express how much I hate politics. Politics in real life and politics inserted into movies, shows, and games. Politics ruined so many great franchises like Star Wars, the MCU, and now, Transformers is coming under the same fire. And people are blaming conservatives for everything like it's the conservatives doing this. Meanwhile, people like me just want to enjoy our favorite franchises without having to deal with the same politics we have to deal with on a daily basis anyway. In Transformers, the only political thing should be the forces of good fighting the forces of evil, that's where the line should be drawn. And no, that evil does not include bigotry, since that again refers to real life. Transformers shouldn't be about exploring the issues of racism, or the issues of gender or sexuality, we have shitshows like Steven Universe for that. Transformers should be about a four million year long, brutal intergalactic conflict that ravaged an advanced alien species and its planet and found its way to Earth, and it's up to humans to work with the Autobots to stop it or fall victim to extinction. It's fine by me to have characters like Knock Out, Breakdown, Tailgate, and Nightshade, who are actually unique and interesting characters that gay and trans people can relate to while watching the respective movie or show, but it shouldn't be something pushed into our faces against our will, because that type of shit turns a lot of people off. I personally do not like romance in movies and shows in general, not between different genders, and not between the same genders. Romance, just like politics, is something that should be limited to real life in my opinion and stay out of fiction. I don't want to watch Knock Out explore his relationship with Breakdown just like I wouldn't want to see Wheeljack explore his relationship with Arcee, or Optimus Prime explore his relationship with Elita-1. I don't want to see characters being confused about how they should refer to Nightshade. If it's something the show makers want to insert, make it feel natural, don't make it so obvious that so many people call it out (and get called bigots afterwards). We live in what feels like a crumbling society where massive groups of people hate each other for the things they believe. You don't have to actually do anything, you just have to say something people won't agree with, and it will be enough for you to be bullied and ostracized. That is not what a progressive society looks like. That's what a hateful society looks like. This massive division that is happening right now will have devastating consequences in the future, and we may as well divide into Autobots and Decepticons ourselves, except in real life. Transformers was one of the last few franchises that remained neutral for a long time (other than Michael Bay's US military propaganda sprinkled throughout the Bayverse movies), but that is slowly going away now. Earthspark is a good show, it has an interesting story, original ideas like Megatron being an Autobot, interesting original characters like Twitch, Thrash, Nightshade, and other Terrans (also an interesting concept of Earth-born Transformers), but Nightshade sharing their pronouns should be as political as it gets.
Sorry if I said anything that upset anyone reading this, but I had to somewhat speak up as a lifelong Transformers fan who wants to see this franchise do well and reach out to a wider audience, including future generations. The Transformers as a franchise has been alive for 40 years, which is an insanely long time, and I do not want to see it go broke.

Okay, here's what I have to say:
I grew up watching the first 3 Bayverse movies, TF Animated and TF Prime. When I heard about Earthspark, I was expecting something like Animated. Man, how wrong I was. Honestly, I would say this show is only better than RID 2015 (even The Last Knight was more enjoyable than this for me). Here's some of the things I don't enjoy at all:
    - The fact that this is supposed to be a G1 sequel makes no sense at all (like, Megatron is Galvatron at this point, Bumblebee is Goldbug, etc.)
    - The designs... okay, I'll admit, some of them do look good (Soundwave, Shockwave, Grimlock, Elita-One and Brawl), but nearly all the others (mainly Optimus, Megatron, Arcee and Skywarp) look terrible. The same goes to most of the new characters
    - Speaking of the characters, the way they are written really troubles me. Shockwave switching sides, for example, feels completely out of character. Like, dude is one of the most loyal Decepticons, it doesn't make sense for him to change sides. Plus, Optimus really doesn't feel like... Optimus. It's not like Bayverse Prime or Animated Prime, where they are different (Animated being less experienced and Bayverse being a death machine), but they still have some of their og character in them. Earthspark Prime, on the other hand, doesn't feel like a big leader, but more like a goofy parent
    - Megatron switching sides isn't really bad, the problem is that there isn't really much development on it. The other times Megatron gave up on the Decepticons (like in Prime and IDW), they actually gave a proper development for it
    - The new characters really don't please me. Most of them feel empty (at least for me). The Nightshade gender thing also was completely unnecessary. And the human characters... it's the same problem I have most of the time: they just don't feel fleshed out (the only shows/movies where I actually care about the humans are Prime, Animated, Bumblebee and Rescue Bots)
    - And now my biggest issue with the Earthspark: character development. To put it simple, during the entire show, it really doesn't feel like they are trying to work correctly with their characters. Like, if you watch other Transformers media like Animated, Prime, IDW, Cyberverse, Rescue Bots or even the live actions, you can actually see some good character development, even if minimal, while Earthspark does it the same way RID did, completely messy.
Honestly, the only thing I truly liked of Earthspark was Soundwave (even though I still like the Bayverse one better)

Just recently, I came across this final part you talked about, and for everything you just said, all I have to say is 👏👏👏👏👏

About the nightshade scene: It could be argued that, while it does feel very manipulative to younger audiences for addressing gender issues in a distasteful manner, in-universe cybertronians are not of the same species as us and that in general many of them do not need to be attached to those genders because of their non-sexual biology. Of course all interpretations so far have categorized some of the most popular characters as male or female like Optimus, Megatron, Bumblebee and Starscream as all male. That being said, it was presented poorly and without a hint of subtlety whatsoever. Besides that scene, there can be a whole other lot of more legitimate reasons to hate this show like making Optimus Prime not a believable character and the show lacking impact in any way. I'd rather stick to watch Transformers Prime 10 times more than watch anything of this show.

I said this on an Instagram post:
The problem isn't the fact they used the pro noun thing. It's the fact that this sort of political ideology doesn't work in certain media, especially like transformers.
Transformers is a show about two factions fighting for their right to control and save their planet. @@Nerdsfeed My favorite would have to be either Animated or Prime.
I know not everyone likes the style of Animated, but I think it's one of the most unique versions of the Transformers. It reinvented a lot of characters and gave them plenty of depth. Like how they turned Ratchet into a guilt-ridden veteran, or Shockwave into a shapeshifting undercover agent. TFA also gave us Sari Sumdac, who raised the bar for the human characters in Transformers shows She wasn;t just a spectator to the conflict, but literally a part of the Transformers world herself.. Shame we never got a fourth season to wrap up all the plot elements.
Prime's style was like a mix of Bayverse and Animated, and the bots looked amazing! I loved that the show never talked down to its audience. The story was told with the maturity it needed, but it never got too dark for kids. It had kid characters, but they never got on my nerves. Jack, Miko and Raf had some comedic moments, but they mainly treated the war with the seriousness it deserved. I know a lot of people hate Miko, but she never bothered me. The show gave us THE BEST Megatron. A powerful warrior with a devilish intellect and plenty of quotable dialogue, masterfully voiced by Frank Welker. It had one of the coolest Soundwaves who stole every scene he was in, and only had A SINGLE line of dialogue! I still remember the start of season 2, where Optimus reverted back into Orion Pax, and Megatron tried his best to convince him that the Decepticons were the good guys. Or the episode where Starscream and Knock-Out release a zombie plague on the ship. Or the part where Megatron found the Star Saber, realised the damage it could do in the hands of the Autobots, and replaced his own arm with that of Solus Prime to make a dark copy. The only thing I disliked about the show treated Unicron. He felt really disappointing compared to earlier versions of the character.
My least favorite show is Energon. I watched it years ago when I still tried to watch every Transformers show, and I can't tell you what happened in it. I completely forgot the plot. All I remember is lifeless CGI models, endless transformation sequences, and Kicker Jones, who might be a worse human character than Sam Witwicky.

I feel that if they, indeed, drop the woke stuff, and maybe did some more emotional work with Optimus (in my opinion, he sounded more indifferent than the other characters) it would be better than it already is. I thought the family character building was very wholesome, and also peak. It does show that kids can also change the world for the better, however I feel as if it's not clear on what their message is attempting to send to youths.

I can respect that, I liked how they handled it in Prime, and even Cyberverse. How there was that hint of respect still between Optimus and Megatron so whenever they fight together they are more powers than alone but conflicting ideologies keep them from truly every being on the same exact side. They could have done it in Dark of The Moon surprisingly enough and had plans on it. Megatron and Optimus were originally going to team up to take down sentinel and then form a peaceful aliiance(ish) to achieve a common goal without actually being on the same side

Personally I don’t really consider it as a sequel to the G1 timeline. Earthspark is it’s own thing.
Also I’ve understood both sides of the Nightshade argument. While diversity in shows is always good, some children might not fully understand pronouns at such a young age. Either showcase LGBTQ+ characters at a show for older kids (when they understand them more), or have parents explain the concept to them, or don’t show them at all. There are many ways to do this

I dislike the show for turning every single Decepticon into "they weren't really the bad guys after all" or "i was abused so that makes my warcrimes excusable". How do you take Tarantulas, one of the most twisted and vile transformers ever made, and make him "le wholesome and heccin misunderstood"? Even Starscream isn't safe, and I would have been fine with it if he wasn't voiced by Steve Blum, who was the slimiest and most despicable version of Starscream seen in animation.

For three years, I've been writing my own Transformers story, a whole different continuity and iteration, an original version of mine that is inspired by the different concepts and stories already introduced. In my version of the story, there is a clear distinction between the "females" and "males," especially with how the fandom still debates about why there are two genders.
In my story, the females are called the Producers while the males are called the Builders. I'm not going to elaborate further on the History of this because I want the rest of the story to be a surprise, but basically, the Producers farm Energon. They are born with tools that help them produce more of those resources that support Cybertronian life. Meanwhile, the Builders create and construct the structures present on Cybertron, hence explaining their buff appearance because of the "muscles" they posses that give them the strength to lift heavy objects and do heavy work. They are also equipped with tools for constructing, while the Producers lack those traits, which is why they're slim because they do not need those "muscles" and focus more on Cybertronian "farming" and sustaining the supplies.
However, despite all that, both are very capable and skillful warriors who can fight just as deadly. I hope this concept will be fine with others, because I've always wanted to set a distinction between the male and female Cybertronians. 😅

Its a very interesting idea. Kinda of like the hunters and gathers of life on earth. Very reminiscent of both the past as well as tribal life that still exists. I understand where you're coming from regarding the Nightshade scene. I remember being caught off guard by it considering that Nightshade had just been born, and as far as my knowledge goes for transformers, they don't have a concept of gender like humans. I know in the IDW comics they had to learn about it, but maybe it's a Terran thing? Plus, I was more focused on their plan in that episode. I thought they handled it well, they glossed it over, but I understand that with how the writers posed it as a "question" (in quotes cuz it's not really a question), it can be damaging to a young child. Especially if they hyper-fixate on it. I do think calling it manipulation is a stretch though. Kids see things all the time, and they will think about certain questions. It's up to the parents to recognize when their kids have something bothering them and address them. Cuz if Earthspark didn't mention gender, someone or something was bound to (especially nowadays). Kids are naturally curious. Honestly, I think the best approach would've been to have just Nightshade ask to be called with they/them pronouns without the additional commentary. I know they had a whole episode with Nightshade interacting with a teenager that went by she/they in one episode in the other half of season 1, but I haven't seen it so I cannot say how they've handled it outside of one scene.
I think discussions about people being different are fine, and great even since they can normalize certain aspects of a person early on. Though I do agree that it was an awkward placement to have that topic thrown in especially with the context of the scene.

    • @Nerdsfeed
      @Nerdsfeed  Рік тому +17

I respect you being so respectful, and agree with you to a point actually, but hate that "Cuz if Earthspark didn't mention gender, someone or something was bound to (especially nowadays)." is a truth. 7 year olds shouldn't have to be concerned with gender-identity. Especially since there are new pronouns made up just about every day. Such a sad world we live in.
If it had to be in there, which it didn't, just calling him the pronouns without the additional scenes and commentary definitely would've been the best approach.

I 100% agree with you. I don't like it either. As much as we preach about letting kids be kids, we don't. Kids are being fed gender-identity stuff so much more frequently that it's crazy. Unfortunately, it just means parents will have to explain these things earlier on, there's no escaping it at this point. Which is what I meant by that comment.
I am glad we agree on how they should've best approached. At least it wasn't focused on for too long in that scene. I hope to watch the rest of season 1 soon to see how the series develops, especially that one episode that has a focus on Nightshade. I think Earthspark has the potential to be good, but I deffo see the discrepancies that you've pointed out (I never watched G1, only watched a handful of Transformers series).

Now while I haven't seen the show for myself, the idea of a good megatron can work in animation as it has in the IDW comics(I haven't read those ones only the 2019 reboot.....I got in late to the party for the comics.) I think the best to handle a Megatron that switched sides honestly, the Prime Megatron. Megatron from Transformers Prime yes took ques from many other megatrons and had his origin as such like being a Gladiator so yes he knew oppression but when he felt the same kind of oppression he inflicted onto many other cybertronians in the way Unicron Oppressed him, he finally understood the grave mistake he made in his thousands of years of war and grew a distaste for it. This Megatron could of been worthy of a series where he goes forth and trys to redeem himself from all the deeds he has done and build himself as a better Cybertronian BUT instead just from the clips seen in this video I can see this Megatron for seemingly no reason changed sides. I just find it odd that he does this when only other times I know Megatron to change sides or work with the autobots is if he had to or he finally seend the damage he has done to others be done to him. Now while his design and altmode is ok(I really like the idea of Megatron as a Helicopter since Animated is one of my top 3 designs for Megatron. side note my rankings for that are 1.) Prime Megatron, 2.) Animated Earth Mode Megatron. 3.)Last Knight Megatron which yes the movie sucked but his design didn't.) I still just find it hard to like this Megatron due to really no reason for his switching sides besides to cause "Tension" Between Megatron and the other Decepticons for really as repeated before no reason.
