  • Well, this was a little maddening. A batch of tapes recorded off of Guam's(!) Cable TV service with Pay-Per-View movies on them. Before each of these movies, the cable company ran a very primitive community calendar sort of thing done with a series of printed paper slides in something resembling an oversized picture frame (you can briefly see someone pulling the page at one point). Unfortunately, I never got more than a few seconds at a shot of this setup.
Fortunately, there are other postings here on YT that run far longer. I only posted this to add to the collection.
These aired on Guam Cable TV sometime in 1981.

If anyone watched the local news at 6pm or seen any local commercials during the years 1977-1981, there was a good chance I was the "technical director" (pushing buttons and sliders) for the show. I can't believe I still remember the remote video cams for that time: Sony DXC-1610. Good times good people.

I worked for Guam Cable TV on the mainland (Western Systems) during this year and I probably recorded these programs that this poster recorded (except the local material) on Guam (or Saipan or Rota). Guam Cable TV recorded all programming (CBS to VH1) in LA (Pasadena) and airmailed them to Guam for replay 7 days later.

That’s funny! So did I. Worked in Westwood when they were there and for a while after the move to Pasadena. Used to do the recording and the logs/schedule. ‘Kerry

The R-rating bumper appears to use an instrumental rendition of the song "Softly, As I Leave You". I have no idea who recorded it.

OMG I used to type up the cards for the community notices shown briefly. But we didn't switch them by hand. There was a flipping machine which did that. But it very well could have been my hand adding a card if it was between 1976 and 1978 😅

How did the flipping machine work? Everything I can think off offhand would be woefully impractical.

If ancient memory serves, it was a kind of homemade long plexiglass rectangle, with a camera at one end and a rotating rack of cards held by metal frames. I'd pull outdated cards and insert new ones. The flipping mechanism reminded me of the bedside clocks of the day when the numbers would flip.

They'd have to have been pretty small cards.

@ArchiveAnnex roughly the size of an index card, maybe a little larger. The flippy part was at the opposite end of the plexiglass from the camera...several feet away.

And rather cheap and crude. Still, interesting find.

I'm loving the piece of muzak that plays over the movie rating bumper.
I'm baffled as to how they could afford a character generator for the rating bumpers but not something to run teletext for the community bulletin board slides?
EDIT: for those curious, the song during the bumper is Henry Mancini's version of "Softly As I Leave You".

This Is Recorded Between August And September 1981 Because Of Nickelodeon's Advertisement. The Sweepstakes Of "Name The Presidents" Were Held For Almost 2 Months Beginning As Early As August 9, 1981, And Continued Until As Late As September 20, 1981. I Looked Through Papers And I Saw The Advertisements Scattering All Over Papers, Most Of Them Were From August 9, August 23, And September 20, 1981.

That'd be about right. It seemed like most of the Guam stuff was from the latter half of '81.

Huh, I always found Guam interesting. I kinda want Guam to be the 51st state. Especially with North Korea being a threat.
