I've owned many china cymbals in my time (I currently use 4 of them on my setup) and I found that my Sabian AA 17" Holy China is the best I've ever used. It seems that adding the holes quickens the decay and adds a touch more trash. That's what I noticed between the before and after footage other than the simple pitch difference. Awesome video!
That was clever what you did with the sound of the drill to the rhythm of the song in the background and I think definitely sounds better with the holes given for what sound one would want to use it for
Question: regular pattern of holes might favor certain frequencies. Wouldnt a random pattern create more different frequencies therefor changing the sound more dramatically?
Higher pitch, slightly more splashy with the holes. I like people playing buckets and pans so really, for me, it's about style and end result. Das good!
Louis Mastrangelo This video makes that China sound not so good, I have it as an auxillary China and I think it sounds great. The video makes it sound really thin, but in person it sounds very full. not a lot of sustain but a full bodied China.
The holes definitely improve the attack and bite, absolutely love the Holy China sound, especially in the new mini versions. HOWEVER, Sabian gets broken returns like crazy... I think because of the configuration. So if you make one of these on your own, just do one or two rows of holes depending on the cymbal's size, and stay away from the edge of the cymbal where it turns back down.
I'd love to see this experiment with crash, ride and high hats too. Really love watching all your cymbal work and would love more. That said, almost all of your videos are great.
I really enjoyed this video I use the 17in Sabian holy China (love it) and I've always wondered what the difference would be without the holes versus with the holes at I really like the sound that you got when you put the holes in it felt like it was more about trash cany sound And I really like that about it thanks for the video I wonder what would happen if you did that with a crash
Interesting. The drilled and un-drilled both have their own personalities, so it becomes a matter of choice. I liked the "drilled" a bit better myself. I really enjoy your vids. Keep them coming.
Nice. It sounds good with the holes. You've got me thinking about drilling out my xs20 china. I don't know if I can bring myself to take a drill to my cymbals, though. lol.
I appreciate your inventiveness. You are going to stumble into a killer idea if not several. I own a Whu China cymbal which sounds really great, unfortunately it's mounting hole is oversized and not centered. Any suggestions as to how I could rectify this problem? I don't want to key hole this excallent cymbal. I have thought about cutting two washers out of other cymbals. Drilling a centered larger hole in the Whu that removes all of the off centered hole. Then ( applying ) the made up washers. But how? The inner one would be impossible to brsze in place because of the dome, ( it's not a bell ). And I think that brazing would stiffen up the cymbal and ruin its sound. And suggestions would be appreached. Thank You, Tom.
I did the same thing with a zildjian crash I did the first three holes with a drill, I gave up shortly after and use a 55 ton ironworker punch machine. it took me the same amount of time to drill three holes is it took to punch the other 20 some odd holes.
Would've been interesting to keep about 1/4 of the rivets in and then make the rest of the holes the larger radius, but I think the end result worked out pretty cool.
You continue to make interesting, innovative and informative videos. Thank you for all the effort and professionalism that you put into them. The drilled cymbal definitely is a little trashier and more complex and is my favorite. Well worth the effort IMO.
i like how it sounds with the holes more. sounded like its was just the tiniest bit brighter, which is my preference anyways. also like that you use the same DAW as me.
i did this with a pair of Meinl hats- just 4 holes in a diamond pattern on the bottom cymbal. they already sounded decent, but after they were way better. faster, tighter and crispier, and zero airlock
did it myself on a Sabian paragon china 19, used the 12 inch Classic custom trash splash to do the same pstern as the Meinl equilibrium china, but did smaller holes, its killer now
+Josh Campbell I think everybody is familiar with L80s by now and that pretty much demonstrates less mass and less surface area pushing air results in less volume
Josh Campbell since the holy one is lighter, id say its louder if you'd hit it with the same amount of force, since it takes less strength to move a lighter symbal that also has holes that make it more aerodynamic
If you take a cheap set of hi hats like meinl hcs or mcs in 14 inch , would you get a better sound out of them by drilling one to two extra holes in the bottom hats bell?
Your channel is fascinating! I don't even own a drum set (although I practise in band rehearsal when my drummer isn't playing) even less DIY tools, but it's just so relaxing to watch your projects and learn a few stuff!
Think to make it sound extra funky you should hand hammer the outer edge just on the bent edge of the China and leave the rest unhammered see how that sounds?? Great video!!
I was precisely decided to try to drill holes in a cheap china I don't like. gotta try!.. got the same problem with a Paiste Pst 18, and darkening it a little bit will be great! thank you and keep it up!
I hear a clear difference. It haas more of a china texture with the holes drilled in it so in the end you drilling the holes in it made it a better cymbal.
It sounded like there was definitely more decay in the drilled out version. Make another, "Oh shit, I'm at the gig and I forgot ____ " video. I loved that last one.
For me the china sounded better without holes on it's own, but when you started playing the one with the holes sounded better in the mix of everything.
Do I see a stave drum in the back at the very beginning? I've been waiting forever for you to do a stave drum build video! But if you didn't build that shell then you need to build one.
To my ear, the holes give the cymbal a trashier sound - which is a good thing in a china imho! I am considering doing the same to a Sabian 19" AAX extreme china
My favorite video of yours because china's to me are unique you can defintely modify them. I'm gonna get a kinda cheaper china and drill holes then make a stack.
Seems your pretty handy with diy videos could you make one on a home made double kick I've been racking my brain to figure it out no ideas yet and just don't have the money to go out and by one
I made a Cajon last year. I cut out the measurements for one out of wood from an old piano and drilled a snare wire on the inside of the front. Just an idea. but you should make a Cajon!
Nice video. Just found your channel recently and like your work (both youtube vids and soundcloud). Has me looking at my spare parts and found objects in a totally new way. thanks. I like the brightness of the china with holes.
It seemed choked before the holes. Too high pitched for that cymbal, like the cymbal needed to shed some weight. Hammering could possibly have the same results. It would have been nice to hear it with only 1/2 the holes. Find out at which point the sound starts to noticeably change.
Do/Can you have a video explaining how you make your videos? I.e. Camera(s), lighting, editing software, etc.. I realize that that doesn't have a whole lot to do with drumming, but it would be cool to see how the cookies are made!
@rdavidr Looking to modify a horribly thick 20" Zildjian ride from the 60s. Do you recommend lots of small holes or several big (o-zone) holes?? Thanks!
Really interesting video thanks for making this! I was surprised that the difference was so small and that it actually sounded better afterwards. I have that cymbal in 18 inch version and don't like it at all. Maybe I should do the same thing with it!
You should make a drum set out of china cymbals.
Drum Beats Online yes he should!
here we go again... haha
Agreed
you two need to colab more
rdavidr nah... make one out of rivets.
I think all drummers appreciate how you line the camera changes of the drill up with the song haha
TURN A BASS DRUM INTO A SNARE!!
I don't think snare wires that big exist but that would awesome
22' inch snare
I don't think they make skins that big
@@localmusiclover605 my bass drum is 22" but you can find a bigger bass drum which is 24"
Its called a kick
Jk, but kool ideA
Hahaha at 1:50 is that intentional how the drill matches the beat?
Probably. David is a genius
Thomas Hope i don't know how thst's "genius"
i also noticed! it was so f awesome
it seemed to match harmonically as well as rhythmically
Shane Monteiro ikr
Holy China, you've been down too long in the midnight sea!
Oscar robinson -lll Damn Holy Diver
Oh now you’re drumming on meeeee
When drilling cymbals.. you should collect the dust or the drill cuttings or whatever . haha .. then make your own cymbal ..
Fejerick Torres there called bronze turnings
You beat me to this

I agree
Interesting drill melody
haha "I play the drill"
Paul Gilbert
+rdavidr What is the name of the song that plays in 1:08?
the mad scientist of percussion instruments.... cool video man
haha thanks man
Congrats. You managed to make a Classics china sound playable. Horrid series of cymbals.
That was clever what you did with the sound of the drill to the rhythm of the song in the background and I think definitely sounds better with the holes given for what sound one would want to use it for
drill holes in the bell of a crash
Really liked the background music in this one. Thought the cymbal sounded better with the holes
Love the drill bit/ music match up part, that's pretty neat.
Question: regular pattern of holes might favor certain frequencies. Wouldnt a random pattern create more different frequencies therefor changing the sound more dramatically?
I've always thought the middle row should have been offset from the outer rows.
Higher pitch, slightly more splashy with the holes. I like people playing buckets and pans so really, for me, it's about style and end result. Das good!
I don't particularly like the sound either before or after.
Louis Mastrangelo This video makes that China sound not so good, I have it as an auxillary China and I think it sounds great. The video makes it sound really thin, but in person it sounds very full. not a lot of sustain but a full bodied China.
I personally have the 18" classic custom trash china from meinl and I love it for a mid range cymbal
Matt Marshall Like drums always

definitely prefer the drilled one :D
A survivor I dont know man. The regular is too "crashy" for me :D But it's a matter of personal taste :D
MagneticWhistler Zildian chinas are still the best but I agree I like the new one
wuhan all the way, way cheaper and SO MUCH BETTER
i like it better not drilled
Definitely has a darker sound. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and showing the drum community this experiment.

lol idk 😂
Drill almost sounds like part of the song
Nice. It sounds good with the holes. You've got me thinking about drilling out my xs20 china. I don't know if I can bring myself to take a drill to my cymbals, though. lol.

Very nice. Getting lots of cool ideas. I would like to see some picks made from damaged cymbals
I did the same thing with a zildjian crash I did the first three holes with a drill, I gave up shortly after and use a 55 ton ironworker punch machine. it took me the same amount of time to drill three holes is it took to punch the other 20 some odd holes.
Cuts right through the rest of the drums and makes a strong, sharp sound that's perfect for that shrill rock sound
What is the name of the song that plays in 1:08?
I know an Asian priest drummer that would be interested in your holy China cymbal.
I’ll get mi drill! Nice enhancement for a budget cymbal. Been thinking this for quite a long time and now I’m done thinking. Thanks to you!
Noticable difference. A better sound after drilling but I wonder how it effects the structural stability. Will it soon crack between holes.
Would've been interesting to keep about 1/4 of the rivets in and then make the rest of the holes the larger radius, but I think the end result worked out pretty cool.

Best channel on UA-cam. Love your work man.
first time when i like your cymbal tuning!
Nice stave shell in the background
The China definitely sounds better with holes. Darker and trashier
Stave snare shell in the background, will it be in a future video?
did it myself on a Sabian paragon china 19, used the 12 inch Classic custom trash splash to do the same pstern as the Meinl equilibrium china, but did smaller holes, its killer now
Was there any volume difference along with the slight pitch difference?
Redeye Percussion no holes only thing holes affect if the pitch and key note of the cymbal
+Josh Campbell I think everybody is familiar with L80s by now and that pretty much demonstrates less mass and less surface area pushing air results in less volume
Roe Sham Boe honestly I couldn't tell difference in volume only the pitch
Josh Campbell since the holy one is lighter, id say its louder if you'd hit it with the same amount of force, since it takes less strength to move a lighter symbal that also has holes that make it more aerodynamic
bananaexplosion I know I'm just saying I didn't physically hear a difference in volume.

Always a pleasure to watch your videos Dave. Have you ever produced for any local rappers or anything? You have a ton of talent.
I LIKE that sound... it's not as long and dark as a "china" cymbal... it's "bright" and short.
The holy china is the best sounding china cymbal ever. Props to chad smith of the rhcp and sabian for creating this awesome cymbal
How is it that i cant seem to stop watching your videos? 😱
I find it kinda cool how the one with holes has lower pitch, but a higher sounding decay
I like the sound of it with the holes without the rivets

Holy China, Batman! You answered my question before you knew I asked it! Thanks!
The drilled one def sound "trashier", has a lower tone and shorter sustain. Love it!
What if you put tambourine jingles in the holes? Would it give a rivet type sound or a ching ring type sound?
Honestly surprised the pitch dropped. I wish i can do the things you do looks like alot of fun
Amazing music in the background. What’s the name of this soulful track?
is that a snare build in the background? :o
.,,I have a question I have set of hi-hats symbols.., do you think I can make them sound different if make holes or something else.,,on them..
I hear a clear difference. It haas more of a china texture with the holes drilled in it so in the end you drilling the holes in it made it a better cymbal.
I need to do this my Paiste 18 inch china, the china has a darker tone with the holes...I like it.

Without the holes it pretty much sounds like a crash...
Julius Ernst RIGHT?
you should try making a low volume cymbal just like zildjian's L80 series, it would be fun to watch! love your vids man
I also expected more of a difference. what about enlarging some of the holes?
I like that meinl ride you've got there can I get specs on it I'd like to get myself one
For me the china sounded better without holes on it's own, but when you started playing the one with the holes sounded better in the mix of everything.
i was wondering if you can make a simbal base like gevin harisons.
It sounds tons better. Nice work.
Have you ever considered selling multiple velocity samples of your kits David? I'd buy one with fx cymbals in!
I'm still confused to how you mix your drums, since they don't sound like they are close miced
Do I see a stave drum in the back at the very beginning? I've been waiting forever for you to do a stave drum build video! But if you didn't build that shell then you need to build one.
without the holes it almost sounds like a really dry crash. The holes make it so much better in my opinion
now it now it sounds like a China
Gretsch_Drummer 9377 now it now it does.
OddCereal holy crap I'm retarded. lmao 😂
would you say that the holes made it louder? thats what it sounds like on my cell with headphones?
To my ear, the holes give the cymbal a trashier sound - which is a good thing in a china imho!

whats that undrilled drum shell in the top right corner at the start of the video
I kinda want to do this with my zildgin 14" thin crash that I use as a hi-hat top. Might did pretty cool.
I started with 3/16 and am gonna do the 1/2 inch step bit later. I just don't get how you get the holes so clean!
Just kidding. the step bit made it easy!
I like the mode, made it sound more like a china instead of a really low crash.
Seems your pretty handy with diy videos could you make one on a home made double kick I've been racking my brain to figure it out no ideas yet and just don't have the money to go out and by one

I actually did the same thing to a 16 inch Paiste 2002 China. It sounds amazing for the stuff I play.
I just bought a 17" holy china and I'm so exited for it to come
