My father, a Royal Navy telegraphist attached to the Royal Marine Commandoes, took part in the Walcheren landings. He also said that they were more bloody than Juno Beach on D Day. Great to see Belgians and Norwegians bravely fighting alongside the other allies.

The Norwegians were part of the Royal Commandos and also trained with the 52nd Lowland Division (Mountain) in the Highlands of Scotland, they trained as mountain troops. They were training for the liberation of Norway and the Norwegians were to be interpreters for the Scots. The liberation of Norway wasn't required, but the Lowland Div was sent to Walcheren.
Always a joke as they trained as mountain troops and ended up fighting inland below sea level.

I was yesterday in Walcheren. What a beautiful region, and the people are nice. But I saw little if any announcements regarding commemoration of these tough days. Nice video of the Norwegians and Belgians from 10th Inter-Allied Commando landing near Westkapelle and fighting hard in dire circumstances. Just before the three minutes mark, one can recognise Captain G. Danloy leading the Belgians into combat.

My Dad was RN on this invasion with no4 commando he was on LCA's, out of his flotilla of 8 craft only 3 made it ashore he always said for his little group of craft it was much worse than D-Day. after the battle for the island he was sent up the canal to the centre of Middelburgh he ran across the square and stole the Nazi banner that hung outside of the town hall. I still have, but think I will return it to the town as I have no relatives to pass it on to.

I never knew that there were Norwegian and Belgian forces amongst "our" liberators... :-( All we hear at Memorial Day (May 4th) and Liberation Day (May 5th) is about American, Canadian, and some British and Polish forces. Of course, this is mainly about the Operation Market Garden, but these "smaller" (really?) battles were just as important. Thanks a lot for your contributions and offers Norway and Belgium!

Thus was one of the most strategic operations after D-Day. My folks were kids on the island. Does anyone know any RAF spitfire and Typhoon pilots shot down near Koudekerke. Read Joe Brown's (now 92 yrs) account from the Scottish Highlanders who got General Daser to surrender in Middelburg. Any German relatives of General Rinehardt, Daser? My grandfather fed an older German soldier who didn't want to be there and after dinner listened to the BBC for progress on the war. Sadly The German soldier went home to a bombed city (Munster) where his family perished. Lots of tragedy on the German side. General Daser was a career soldier and not a Nazi.

With respect for the soldiers. But the film itself is a little bit coloured and here and there staged. The battle was much and much heavier than the film suggest. The Germans fought like hell, and dind't spare nothing. But now it looks like that the commando's run over them if there was no restistance at all. That's not the real thing. The German troops where there for years and they know every corner or bending of the islands. It was heavy, very heavy with a lot of mistakes of the allies, because they dind't know the terrain. It is better to say that the allies have to fight a bitterhard battle against a warhardenend enemy. It is in my opnion better to let see the truth of a dirty war, than this socalled boyscout romantism of how easy it was to win. The reality is the right witness. And you give by doing so the soldiers who fought this heavy bloody fight all the honour what they disserved. A battle is not easy and the enemy is not always a lame duck. The high number of dead soldiers at both side say enough. Walcheren was not a piece of cake, but real hell.

It’s a pity that the modern so called historians(especially the amateur ones on the Internet), don’t pay more attention to the news reels of the day, because then they would see that the different peoples who had joined the British services, were not ignored, or hidden on purpose(except for by certain ignorant officers and people), but were in fact celebrated for their involvement in the fight against the nazis, wherever and whenever possible........... Which some of these modern “historians” and commentators like to pretend never happened, while they make their wild and uninformed comments, but these claims can be shown for the ignorance or lies that they truly are..............

Ade Damanhuri, not only the Dutch failed, but also the English and the Aussie, New Zealanders, it is not a question of quality, but numbers and better weapons. And the Japanese where militarially strong in that time, look what they did with the American fleet. Another thing is that the Dutch never have defend East India, because we dind have troops there and we never ever had troops there. So I don't no where you have this information from. Indonesia was in that time a Dutch colony and Japan invade the Islands of Indonesia. But before that our fleet had a long and heavy seabattle with the Japanese fleet in the Pacific Ocean for three days and we lost most of our warships but the japanese lost two heavy cruisers and a couple of other warboats. That gave the small Australian fleet the oppertunity to escape from a total collapse of their own fleet and could sail away to Australia. I can assure you that the Dutch fought the whole war with submarines and quarilla´s in the jungle of Indonesia. There is lecture about that and maeby is it good to read that first before you have an ordeal about others. Quantity or superiority is not the same as quality. And at the end Japan lost that war isn't? Just like Hitler. Our second enemy, we fought with.
