Classic: "What's the point of being grown up if you can't be a bit childish sometimes?" Modern: When River says "Hello Sweetie" to 11 in Good Man Goes to War
Wilf knocking 4 times is actually genius. The doctor was told 'he' would knock 4 times, but doesn't mention who. The doctor knows that this event would be the end of his current life, but presumes it's the Master who kills him. The 4 knocks still signal his death, but not for the person he thought it would be.
Also, earlier he told the Master off for assuming a prophecy was about himself ("not someONE, someTHING") but kept on thinking his own prophecy was about the Master as well...
Ten yelling, "I could do so much more!" It broke my heart because it was so true and yet if he let Donna's grand dad die it would have made him so much less. Talk about a no-win scenario! Oh, and "Water always wins." I use that line every time someone in the real world attempts to cross a flooded road and has to be rescued.
My favourite moment that wasn't mentioned here is definitely the ending to Vincent and the Doctor. The words Matt Smith speaks at the very end changed my outlook on life forever :).
These are all great. A few of other memorable moments that come to my mind include: 1. The Doctor taking Vincent Van Gogh to see his work in the present day. 2. The Doctor and Donna destroying Pompeii together to save the world. 3. Ace beating up a dalek with a baseball bat. 4. River Song's sacrifice in the Library. 5. The Doctor rejoicing at the end of The Doctor Dances when "everybody lives."
Midnight is my favourite episode of DW. None of the other "scary" episodes managed to create genuine existential dread quite like this one. The fact that The Doctor never managed to (as Ellie stated) solve the puzzle makes it all the more terrifying.... [Edit: YT absolutely sketched out on me when I originally posted this. Apologies if all you saw when initially reading it was a word salad]
I love Midnight as well because it also shows how necessary the Doctors companions are. Without a companion to help him bridge the gap and humanise him to a crowd of frightened strangers, all of his actions just served to alienate him further
@@stewartlaird4571 Midnight is definitely my favourite. I always saw it as people- or rather a mob of scared people- being the actual monster of the week. But I love your point about how necessary the companions are, never thought of it like that.
Finally, some midnight appreciation. It’s an amazing episode and the side cast really helps it. I love the feeling of the doctor out of his league, it’s uniquely perfect. Of course we’ll pretend there’s no visible green screen in the beginning…
Brilliant list! Thank you for highlighting such epic Classic Who moments. I am hoping that the animations, colourisation, return of the Toymaker and so forth brings new fans into the Classic Who fold.
I was 2 when Doctor Who started. I watched Dr Who all through my childhood and have to admit through my adulthood as well. The Autons have left a lasting impression on me. Every time I go to Marks and Spencer's, I half expect to be followed by the mannequins 😊.
For me one was definitely the end of Waters of Mars, where the Doctor appeared to be developing a god complex and was going on about how he was all powerful, he could do whatever he wanted and nobody could stop him. Was actually hoping they'd go somewhere with that but it was never re-visited after.
A lot of great moments, I'd say the curator for me was probably 1 of those moments I always go back to as Tom Baker was just great in the scene and brought gravitas to the scene.
I'm always going back and forth between Midnight and Heaven Sent as to which one is the best and most shocking episode of Doctor Who, because they're both very different and at the same time equally briliant in the points where they're similar. But it's undeniable that Midnight wins the spot for the most unsettling and terrifying episode of them all. Just watching the Doctor struggling to address what the threat really is and how to overpower it, while everyone is freaking out and blaming each other up to the point of losing his authority, been called accomplice to the creature and getting actually defeated by it, having lost his free will. If it wasn't for the attendant who bravely sacrifies herself to take Sky and the creature possessing her outside, the Doctor would have probably just died moments later being thrown out the bus, which it's completely terrifying and disturbing to think about. And the fact the whole thing happens in a closed room (the bus) and we never really find out what that creature was or what was it doing really, it's even more impressive.
I'm not the biggest fan of these list videos, but I love "Doctor Who" and I love Who/Trek Culture and I love Ellie, so THANKS for this!!!! (And I think that Baker's Doctor was more confident than all of them put together!)
I was one of those children who were tormented by The Autons. I remember actually freaking out as a kid when my mother walked me past some in a shop window.
The Spearhead from Space is what terrified me as a child. At 8 years old we went to Blackpool and there was no fucking way I was going into the wax works hahaha
2 of mine -in the Doctors wife "But I always took you where you needed to go" sticks for me. And Jenna Colemans 4th wall break and "Run u clever boy,and remember" is one of my favorite wallpapers:P
There are obviously too many to choose from. So i love this list for including so many unexpected moments from the whole history of the show. Many WhoTube channels are very biased towards the modern series, but this list struck the balance exactly right ❤️
It's definitely River Song's death for me. Her introduction as a character is one of my absolute favorite things, and wholly unforgettable. I'll never forget that 2-parter
Got to say the trailer for Blink is fantastic, as is the episode. I dont think I have been more excited for an episode after seeing the trailer than for Blink.
For me, it's Baker (Tom, of course, NOT Colin), McCoy, then Davidson (yes, I'm old)... Then, Tennant. "meh" to all the rest... Remember, "Your first Doctor is your favorite"... ;-)
@@igorschmidlapp6987not necessarily for me my first Doctor was Jon Pertwee but Davidson in Classic (loved them all tho) will always be my Doctor. In Modern I actually love them all too but Capaldi is the one I connected to on a deeper level.
I love that Tom Baker says, "you may just find yourself revisiting some old faces," and then David Tennent becomes the 14th doctor. However, we had to get through 12 and 13 first. Such a prophecy!
I seem to remember reading or watching something interesting about the young boy in that episode. Future companion or Doctor or behind the scenes person?
Great list, but one glaring omission, Ace + Baseball bat destroying a Dalek, that moment was the blueprint for all future new Who companions, no more damsel in distress, just confidence & bravery, influenced by The Doctor shining through.
I think my favourite moments from my experience of doctor who so far would probably start with my first introduction to the show with series 1 back in 2005! The ninth doctor and rose tyler quickly became very popular in my household and that first series was so magical! Being introduced to the classic who monsters for the first time like the daleks, cybermen, the master/ missy, davros and so many more was so special too! I loved seeing all of the tenth doctors companions together in the tardis at the end of the series 4 finale! The 50th anniversary special was incredible and matt smith smashed it as the eleventh doctor! Rosa was incredibly educational and emotive and was one of the few quality episodes of the chibnall era. And I loved the first episode of the 60th anniversary specials, looking forward to the rest and finally seeing the fifteenth doctor and ruby sunday! Great video Who Culture and you were amazing Ellie! Thanks for this! 😊😊
I love the four knocks from Wilfred because it's a perfect subversion of expectations. It was those four knocks that the prophecy was talking about. I don't think The Master ever specifically knocks four times. He'll tap or smack things but I don't think he ever knocked.
the Curator is my personal #1. Baker's Doctor was my second sci fi hero, after Spock, and honestly I lost the thread over the next several doctors. the Reboot with Ecclestone, who I've enjoyed since Cracker, was great fun (still wish he'd had more time), and I've bought in to the modern Who. I damn near wept when I saw the Raggedy Man and the Curator joshing with each other. single best Who-moment, for me. period.
My favorite ("favourite") moments are many, of course. Some of them include: Peter Capaldi "Doing it* right" (*It: Entering the Tardis) in "The Husbands of River Song" John Hurt's Doctor "But for now, for this moment, I am the Doctor again." "The Day of the Doctor" Matt Smith's Doctor "I am definitely a man man with a box." In "The Eleventh Hour" I could easily go on (and I did, then reduced it). As always thank you so very much for the videos. I hope Ellie is feeling better, and if not gets better real soon.
When the soldiers are falling back, but One steps forward to face WOTAN's War Machine. Chef's kiss, no notes, sublime, classic, unforgettable! Two's triumph in the face of the Dalek Emperor in The Evil of the Daleks when he reveals that he has spread the Human Factor to all the drone Daleks in the city. Troughton is too frequently overlooked, he was freakin' brilliant! Oh, and when Troughton acted opposite himself as both The Doctor and Salamander. One of the all time best stories right there.
The Doctor's "im clever" moment in Midnight could also be a callback to Luke Rattigan saying the same thing earlier in the season in Sontaron Stratagem/Poison Sky, and showing how the Doctor is acting just like that kid throwing a tantrum
Hey guys got a theory for you, remember the valyard? Who turned out to be a corrupted time lord, do you think he could be the metacrices doctor? Been thinking about this a lot over the years as well as was the doctor a lawyer on his home world?
Cyberman: "Logic error. What in hell is he doing?" Dalek: "DO NOT ASK ME. I AM ONLY HERE FOR EXTERMINATION." The Master: "Ra-Ra-Rasputin, Russia's greatest love machine..." Also Dalek: "ANALYSIS: PROBABLY MISDIRECTION." Also Cyberman: "Uhhhhhhh..."
Sooooo…. do we like the coloured & tweaked original Dalek story or no, folks? I watched it after the Dalek 63:88 Nicholas Briggs interview and the music is a bit odd in places, but overall I thought that it’s not too bad, they’ve certainly upped the pace!
I really want someone from whoculture to read this. I think I have made a connection which I really hope doctor who did on purpose. In the closing theme there is a kind of crunching sound and whenever I heard it I think on Bernard Cribbins when he was re-enacting the theme tune on never mind the buzzcocks doctor who special. If you watch him act it then listen to the closing title you will see what I mean. I really hope RTD did this on purpose!
Have you watched it yet my love?? I'm super excited to see what you thought of it, I know you'll release a video when you do, yoi said you probably wont be able to see it till the evening or next day but I'm so curious and don't wanna ruin anything for you
Special moments throughout the acr of the doctors greatest adventures across time and space and a few unmentionable moments that's certainly caused a long time problems for it untimely exit for a year or two, but sometimes this is a mishap in the history of Whoinverse. The fact is Doctor Who is actually better when it comes back undoubtedly. There's always someone who wants to finish it off, but fans know best. It's worth remembering this scenario to say it's over that is where it depends on how it's loved by those who are dedicated fans to every moment and every doctor and its wobbly moments as time passes by. Fantastic magical trip in a blue box and 60 years of epic time lord mystical connection between truth and weird aliens to deadly one's a child born in the 60s world where 4 lads for Liverpool would change to world with music to a little science fiction series that brought a hobo and craxy old man into existence and changed tv forever as the saying goes and the rest is history on a some many levels for everyone who hide behind the sofa or listen to music the whole universe has to say this is exactly what we were, we all have our favourite doctor's and music from The Beatles
I do not envy whoever had to come up with these particular 20 moments (checks notes) Mark Donaldson, good job! I'm sure anyone watching could come up with a list of 20 completely different moments. But we won't; it's a good list. i agree with every entry. I even like the order. Of course, that means there's plenty of room for another video or two or three... Nice work all around. In particular, once again, for the criminally underappreciated performances by our own Ellie Littlechild, which we get FOR FREE (the performances, not Ellie). Don't worry: the appreciation will come. As the Beatles once sang, "It Won't be Long".
For me the original Auton attack in Spearhead From Space, that was shot in Ealing Broadway in London, a shopping area a few miles away, from where I have lived most of my life was unforgettable. A terrifying science fiction scene recorded in a place, I remember well from many trips, through out my life....making it even more terrifying. 😱
While I agree with most things here, Blink definitely deserved to be on this list. I started with NewWho older and a bit skeptical and that episode changed my mind on the universe forever.
I've no problem with the list, but would like to suggest an idea for another, triggered by some old timey-whimey memories of the Classic era. A list, perhaps tongue-in-cheek or played for laughs, acknowledging the shakiest of Doctor Who tropes, highlighting moments where the sets wobbled or fights were less than convincing. the main trigger for this was remembering the many, many times a physical fight would be shown by having the participants facing into the camera and punching at nothing. I know the show didn't have a dedicated stunt team until Pertwee's era, with HAVOC taking over as UNIT soldiers, Ogrons etc, but there must have been a better way to depict an altercation than "punch into the lens" fighting.
I think my favourite moment is watching a new episode that I haven't seen before. It could be with a new Doctor or with a previous Doctor(I haven't seen a lot with Hartnell or Troughton). I know this answer is very expansive but there's great joy in seeing something for the first time.
Other than the throwbacks and callbacks to classic Doctor Who, Sacha Dewan's performance in Power Of The Doctor was truly the best part of the episode.
Think Vengeance on Varos is incredibly underrated. It was genuinely creepy and wonderfully atmospheric. It's the Sixth Doc's best serial, imo. That episode one cliffhanger is one of the greatest. You genuinely worried that the Doctor was dead.
My favourite Doctor Who moment? "I AM YOUR SER-VANT! I AM YOUR SER-VANT! I AM YOUR SER-VANT!" This cliffhanger, from an audio recording of "The Power of the Daleks", is what truly introduced me to Doctor Who, and for that, I'll never forget it as long as I live. Also, this brief interrogation: "Who are you?" "I'm the Examiner." "WHY are you HERE?" "To examine." There's just something about the way that conversation is spoken, which really makes it stick in the mind. And now, for something off-topic: funnily enough, I'm not a fan of Heaven Sent. I do respect that it's a technically impressive one-hander with an amazing soundtrack ("The Shepherd's Boy" in particular), and Peter Capaldi's acting is sublime. However, I just can't see myself rewatching it, because it isn't happy, or for that matter, a complete story (like "City of Death"). Also, when you look at it with fresh eyes, it's just the Doctor being chased around a castle by a bedsheet ghost, while angsting too much (which I think is a waste of Capaldi's talent and a major flaw in this Doctor's characterisation overall). So, while I don't know about other peoples' individual reasons for liking the story (and rightfully so; it is pretty much perfect from an atmospheric and thematic standpoint, if not plot-wise, so it's definitely got a lot to love), looking back, I myself just can't help but 1) roll my eyes, 2) compare it to "Scherzo" (a Big Finish two-hander with a similar premise that showcases a different kind of impressive acting skills), and 3) wish I was watching "Robot in Sherwood" instead ("GUARD! HE'S LAUGHING AGAIN! YOU CAN'T KEEP ME LOCKED UP IN HERE WITH A LAUGHING PERSON!"). Then again, I think "Nightmare in Silver" is a brilliant episode (though I do think that the instant upgrade thing is the kind of trope that you can only pull off once), and that's second-to-last on the 11th Doctor polls, so who am I to judge the greatest Doctor Who episode of all time? Also, Timeless Child aside (to which I recommend a very good Titan Comics story called "Origins" featuring Jo Martin's Fugitive Doctor), I consider the Chibnall run overall to be mostly forgettable fun (though "Fugitive of the Judoon" is brilliant, as are the Dalek specials).
Having rewatched from the Clara series quite recently (The were spotty for me on TV) I've been amazed at how good an actor Jenna Coleman is. Bringing, sometimes fairly average, writing up to an amazing performance. Always in character when not the focus of scenes. Reacting well... and acting is reacting or so they say.
The problem with that Rasputin moment is that the rest of the episode up to that point seems to exist for no other reason than to service that moment and makes no sense whatsoever.
Missing from this list: "The Pyramids of Mars" The Doctor confronting Sutekh. "Remembrance of the Daleks": Ace bashing a Dalek with a baseball bat. "The Doctor Dances": "Everybody lives, Rose! Just this once, EVERYBODY LIVES!" "Forest of the Dead": "You and me, River! One last run!" "Vincent and the Doctor": The Doctor comforting Amy when they were not able to save Van Gogh, "The Big Bang": "She is to me!" Also from "The Big Bang": "Raggedy Man I remember you and you are LATE FOR MY WEDDING!" "The Doctor's Wife": The Doctor first meets the TARDIS in human form. "A Good Man Goes To War": "Where is my wife?" "Name of the Doctor": The War Doctor's introduction. "Day of the Doctor": "...But don't worry, I started this a long time ago..."
I doubt that they could do the auton scenes now - think they would seem all too real with the mass shootings that have take place in the US, and the Westminster and London Bridge attacks.
@@daiyahigashikata True. But personally I wouldn't be able to watch something where pedestrians were attacked. I live in London, so feels too close to home,
What’s your favourite Doctor Who moment from the last 60 years?
My favorite Classic Era Doctor is Pertwee (though McCoy is a close 2nd) & my favorite Modern Era Doctor is Capaldi.

The Master: "Ra-Ra-Rasputin, Russia's greatest love machine..."
Also Dalek: "ANALYSIS: PROBABLY MISDIRECTION."
Also Cyberman: "Uhhhhhhh..."
0:54 Oh, for god sake, those round things will always mess me up. They will ALWAYS look propped out to me until there's a close up.
I'll always remember ''I'll always remember when the doctor was me''
Sooooo…. do we like the coloured & tweaked original Dalek story or no, folks?
A good list, so many amazing moments.
But, The Master dancing was just stupid I thought!
Ah yes... the sheer terror invoked by the dreaded inescapable Dalek plunger! ;-)
Babra is menaced by a doic 😭
For me the original Auton attack in Spearhead From Space, that was shot in Ealing Broadway in London, a shopping area a few miles away, from where I have lived most of my life was unforgettable. A terrifying science fiction scene recorded in a place, I remember well from many trips, through out my life....making it even more terrifying. 😱
What about the moment they bring Van Gogh to the museum?
Imagine being menaced by a dalek😂
Martha wasn’t doing a 4th wall break she was looking at the doctor who was stood next to her
While I agree with most things here, Blink definitely deserved to be on this list.
They forgot the activation of Doctor Donna...
I think my favourite moment is watching a new episode that I haven't seen before. It could be with a new Doctor or with a previous Doctor(I haven't seen a lot with Hartnell or Troughton). I know this answer is very expansive but there's great joy in seeing something for the first time.
I was 9 in 2006
WOAH WOAH WOAH. I DEMAND A REFUND AND COMPENSATION 😅 NO RIVER SONG BEING AMYS DAUGHTER WHAT? WHAT? WHATTTTTTTTT?
Other than the throwbacks and callbacks to classic Doctor Who, Sacha Dewan's performance in Power Of The Doctor was truly the best part of the episode.
Really? Wheres "he was being kind"
I certainly love those from the revival featuring Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant and Matt Smith. (I haven't seen much of the classic series.)

I agree about Nightmare in Silver. Although I didn’t really LIKE it, I was slack-jawed at Matt’s brilliant acting.
Gotta say the “I’d be proud if you were my dad” dialogue with wilf and 10 from end of time part 2 should have been on here somewhere for sure
37 k 😬
The problem with that Rasputin moment is that the rest of the episode up to that point seems to exist for no other reason than to service that moment and makes no sense whatsoever.
My headcanon is the Master only became Rasputin to do the dance to the Doctor!
and rightly so, it's brilliant!

Is there a easter egg in the star beast that we missed, no13 with the little dance, looks very familiar?
I doubt that they could do the auton scenes now - think they would seem all too real with the mass shootings that have take place in the US, and the Westminster and London Bridge attacks.
they did it in 2005, and mass shootings had already taken place before then.
@@daiyahigashikata True. But personally I wouldn't be able to watch something where pedestrians were attacked. I live in London, so feels too close to home,
