Andy Williams was the greatest crooner of them all. He sang in public from the age of 5 to 81. He had a four octave range and perfect pitch. He was handsome, talented, modest, charitable, encouraged new talent, a great family man, son, brother, husband, father. I bought his albums aged 13 and wore them out. I saw him live in concert in London. RIP Mr Williams.
I understand Andy was also an excellent barber. Just kidding, that was Perry Como. Andy Williams was indeed a one in a million talent and human being. I can't hear anyone sing Moon River w/o comparing it to him..
Hi, @meirwise1107, thanks for your comment. Andy Williams was very handsome, I didn't think about his looks back in 1963 when I was 10 years old, now that I see him again in these old UA-cam videos, wow, such looks and a great voice to match. Robert Goulet was on a very similar level as Andy Williams, in fact they both did an album together, with the song, "I'd Rather Be Rich"; they both starred in the movie of the same name in 1964. I miss those days.
I too am enjoying these episodes, for several reasons. I enjoy the game, the people involved, and especially a look back into a time that was more civil, in general, and markedly so, in this show.

They had some really fun times together along with Eddy Fisher, the three guys really knew how to sing…… Wonderful memories of gentle times……. Thanks for this posting… much appreciated.
Wow, I remember seeing this episode when I was young. I remembered that Andy Williams used that high pitched voice, and that ultimately it was Bennett Cerf who guessed correctly. Thank you for posting this episode!
My husband and I loved Andy Williams’ singing. “Moon River” was “our song.” He took me to Branson, Missouri, where we heard him sing his signature song in his Moon River Theatre not too long before he died.
Funny thing, I was just watching an Archive of American Television interview with Andy Williams and they asked him about his guest appearances on various programs, including this one. He couldn't recall it at all. He thought the interviewer was mistaken, so I decided to check it out. One of the most memorable disguised voices I've ever heard, and another great performance by Andy. I really wish it could have gone on a while longer.
This would have been over too quickly if they'd had Bobby Darrin as a guest panelist (since he was such a frequent guest on Andy Williams' show). Thank you so much for uploading this video. Andy Williams is my favorite singer... he's the BEST singer ever! I'll always so disappointed that I never got to see one of his Branson Christmas shows in person. RIP

I have been thoroughly enjoying WML for the past three yrs and now I am convinced that Bennett must have been given a clue before the show as to the mystery guest.
For those who may have wondered, but didn't ask: Yes, Phyllis Newman was, indeed, about 2 and a half months pregnant with her daughter, Amanda Green (who would be born on Sunday, 29 December 1963) at the time of this episode. She's starting to look visibly "enceinte" - and there's only so much that the gown that she wore this evening could hide.....
@gcjerryusc I dislike that too. Very classless. I also dislike seeing bare pregnant bellies in swimsuits and pictures. If the mother is this undignified God help the child.
@@kentetalman9008 My comment is 3 years old and it looks like I am replying to a comment that has been deleted. I do still not like those bare belly graphic pregnancy poses. Put some clothes on and take a nice picture with the baby afterwards. Think of how the child might feel. When you become a mother have some dignity.
This is the only episode in which Dorothy Kilgallen and Phyllis Newman appear together. At the beginning of the year, Dorothy missed 10 of the first 18 live broadcasts and taping sessions and Phyllis appeared every time in her place, leading me [and I am sure others in 1963] to speculate that G-T were grooming her just in case to replace Dorothy if Dorothy did not pull herself together. I wonder if hurt feelings or resentments surfaced behind the broadcast scene. Phyllis could have filled in for Dorothy in Spring 1965 when Dorothy injured herself in a fall and missed seven broadcasts and taping sessions - but did not. This is Phyllis’s last WML appearance until December 1965, when she and a bunch of other lady writers and actresses auditioned to replace Dorothy.
soulierinvestments - Just guessing on this and I really could be way off base at this juncture because Phyllis Newman became such a frequent guest on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show while he was still in NYC. But at this time she was having her babies with Adolph Green and on this show was pregnant with Amanda Green. She was also at the height of her initial successes on Broadway and certainly did not need the money. But she may have considered a regular spot here beneficial as exposure to the general public in America to promote all her acting ventures. I would think if they were considering replacing Dorothy at this time that Bennett might have put forward the widow, Kitty Carlisle, of his best friend, Moss Hart, who had died suddenly two years earlier as she may have been ready to consider some minor work again while rearing two teens without a father. But, perhaps not. Bennett did like both Green and Newman, too. It does all fit with Dorothy's increasing absences after her disastrous love affair and inability to complete the book she had promised Bennett on deadline due to an advance.
Just to be a pedantic smartarse now, Bennett Cerf asked the last challenger if the product could be imbibed through the mouth and he got a yes. 'Imbibed' means that it - spaghetti - could be drunk when as a solid food that deserved a no. I think John Daly let it pass because time was running out. By the way, as an English viewer I was glad but mystified to see Mr Edelman on the panel - I've never heard of him.
Bennett wasn't the wordsmith he imagined himself to be especially when trying to one up John Daly, a tall order to be sure. To his credit he seemed to recognize when he got it wrong and took it with reasonable good humor..
@@savethetpc6406 He often did that. I remember one time he got caught telling about a movie the mystery guest starred in, only to be told that the movie hadn't even been released yet. Very awkward moment.
Elsie M. And on the subject of children of WML panel members, Peter Gabel (Arlene's son) would appear a year later to say that he was winding down his first year at Harvard.
Elsie M. There is a comment by you, further down on this page, in which you wrote: "I must be the only one who dislikes Phyllis as a panelist! I do, however, love Dorothy's "bird nest" hairstyles of this period- so pretty." I wanted to reply to that comment, but for some reason there was no reply "button" there, so I'm replying here instead. I hadn't planned to say anything to disagree with all those who obviously think she's great, but I agree with you about Phyllis Newman. She's pretty, bright at times, and seems like a nice person, but she just annoys me as panelist for some reason, and I cannot agree with those here who have stated that she seems to fit right in on the panel. I don't think we're totally alone in this opinion though, judging by TomasTigre's comments, further up on this page. On the other hand, I cannot agree with you about Dorothy's hairdos -- sorry -- though I do think your "bird nest" description of them is apt. I love the icon next to your name, though -- is that Arlene with Jerry Mahoney?
SaveThe TPC Ahh, yes, it was pointed out to me by What's My Line? that there is a bug of some sort on YT preventing such direct responses! How odd! I'm glad I'm not the only one with these thoughts about Phyllis! No worries regarding Dot's hairstyles, though; I figure most probably dislike them! I enjoy their ridiculousness. And, yes, that is indeed Jerry Mahoney next to Arlene. I believe you are the one of the few to correctly guess that (usually folks go to the default, better remembered ventriloquist, Edgar Bergen)!
Maurice Edelman was a brilliant panelist. At the end when the panel tries to guess which vegetable related product Mr. Elsasser is associated with, Edelman appropriately shouts out... "Toothpaste"!
History Aside -- My seventh birthday seems to have been on a Sunday in 1963. In a few days, someone would assassinate Medger Evers and President Kennedy would give his “As Old as the Scriptures” civil rights address.
Phyllis is a dish. She looks like she's carrying a bundle. Her husband the composer (or was he a lyricist) Adolph Green was nearly 20 years her senior! Got get 'em Adolph!
She was, in fact, about 2 and a half months pregnant with her daughter, Amanda Green (day and date of birth: Sunday, 29 December 1963). When Phyllis Newman came out on stage, I took one look at her and the dress and asked myself, "Is she pregnant?" Sure enough, I did some on-line digging and found the date of her daughter's birth.
That long distance swimmer looked weirdly identical to my Mom (who was also a swimmer and same age as this woman).. but it's not her.. very weird experience
I've expressed my distaste for Mrs. Adolph Green else where, so you are not alone. In her defense, she seemed much more adept to password or even TTTT. for some reason, I don't find her so obnoxious on those programs.
@@markxxx21 Her obituaries described how her acting career went into decline as she came to be viewed as an energetic chatterbox. Her raising of children also harmed her career but she said she had no regrets about her role in raising her children.
phyllis is nice, i like her bubbly personality :)) it makes the show a little brighter yet i did not have as much appreciation for as i did for other reoccurring panelists :/
WML should have ended with the mystery guest. They could have had a few minutes to chat with each and every one of them, which was what viewers then (and now) wanted. That was the one big failing of the show.
Andy Williams...IOWA boy. Johnny Carson...IOWA boy (oh, yes, he was...born in and lived in Iowa 'til he was 8). John Wayne...IOWA boy! (Jerry Mathers...Beaver Cleaver...little IOWA boy.)
No matter how many different episodes I watch, or how many times I watch them, (and I've been watching for 4 months straight now!!), I still think Phyllis Newman is one of the most obnoxious panelists. As if her voice wasn't grating enough, she's so uncouth and brash. Not polished.
Different strokes for different folks. I always enjoyed her and never picked up on the obnoxious behavior of which you speak. Apparently she was doing something right to remain with the show for all of those years.
I hate when panelists ask "do you like what you do?" to the contestants. How is that supposed to help them? I also hate that Phyllis always asks if the product would be found on the main floor of a two story house. I mean is there anything that would exclusively be found on the second floor of a house?
Wow, that's a lotta hate. :) But I will concede that there's only one thing I can really think of that can *only* be found on the second floor of a house: the top of the staircase from the first floor.
This question does two things. If the answer is yes, then we have something associated with kitchens or dining rooms or garages. If the answer is no, then we something associated with bedrooms and bathrooms.
The house I grew up in had the kitchen and dining room on the second floor, and the garage was (of course) on the ground floor. Fairly standard, suburban split ranch house. So I don't think that logic quite works. Though I can't see the garage ever being on the second floor (I'll grant that), I would tend to agree-- without the hate-- that it's not a terribly useful question, nor is it when they ask "Can it be found in one particular room of the house?" I've rarely, if ever, seen that elicit anything very useful in the questioning.
What's My Line? I shouldn't have said hate. Hate was too strong a word, 'get annoyed' is a better term. I mean its not like asking a mystery guest if they ever studied dentistry...
TomasTigre I appreciate that-- and I assume that when you mention the dentistry nonsense, it's a reference to my having commented elsewhere on how annoying I find it when Dorothy does that sort of thing!
Is it my imagination or does John avoid greeting and saying goodby to Dorothy as much as he can?….often she can be the only one he doesn’t say hello to. I wonder if there is a reason.
depends on what kind. if its made of vegetables, usually for people who are going on diets or want to be healthier, then yes. but traditionally, the noodles in spaghetti are a grain product for they are made out of flour.
i think shes nice :)) shes a pretty good panelist but not as preferable as ms francis, mr cerf, mr allen (both steve and fred XD), ms kilgallen and mr bishop
Andy was married to Claudine "sure shot" Longet when this episode was made. At 17.40 Bennet Cerf turns his head sideways.....then next time around he 'guesses' that the celeb is Andy Williams 'out of the blue'. Suspicious.
G. Green - He’s not prying into personal matters; he asks so he knows how to address the person in the course of the game. Courteous manners from that time. :)
Lars Rye Jeppesen - Right, because it was a long-standing tradition to address professional/show business women by the name under which they became famous. We see it with the mystery guests as well... everyone knew that Lucille Ball was married to Desi Arnaz, and yet she was still addressed as “Miss Ball.” The famous Mrs. George Burns was often called “Miss Gracie Allen.” :)
Because John Charles Daly is a gentleman, and wants to address them by their proper title. A man is called Mr. whether he's married or not, but a woman is only called Mrs. if she's married.
+Joe Postove Because that would have given away her line, silly! Besides, with a last name of Revell, she should have worn a bolero. Leave the swimsuit to Bo Derek.

By the way, as an English viewer I was glad but mystified to see Mr Edelman on the panel - I've never heard of him.
yes you have... you just watched him on this show !
Bennett wasn't the wordsmith he imagined himself to be especially when trying to one up John Daly, a tall order to be sure. To his credit he seemed to recognize when he got it wrong and took it with reasonable good humor..
Mrs. Scott gave two solid clues to Dorothy, the first one about "indoors than outdoors" went unnoticed by Mr. Daly.
Three years later, Maurice Edelman's eyebrows seceded and formed a new country.
Did they ever call him the space cowboy, or did he ever speak of the pompatus of Love?

They went to war with Martin Scorcese’s bushy brows.
Anybody know enough about Amarillo Texas to know if John knows what he is talking about?

I don't, but he seemed like he was bluffing there, didn't he?
I think he was thinking of San Antonio with the Riverwalk. It is a beautiful place by a river with many people visiting and strolling.
@@savethetpc6406 He often did that. I remember one time he got caught telling about a movie the mystery guest starred in, only to be told that the movie hadn't even been released yet. Very awkward moment.
They sure had a generous definition of the word vegetable back then.
For their purposes a vegetable was anything that wasn't an animal or a mineral. It was a game show after all..
So handsome..Andy Williams..
Phyllis mentions Bennett Cerf's son Christopher graduating from Harvard. How many kids does he have? I know he also has a son named Jonathan.
I assumed only two...? The other being Jonathan.
Elsie M. And on the subject of children of WML panel members, Peter Gabel (Arlene's son) would appear a year later to say that he was winding down his first year at Harvard.
***** Whoops, I misread your comment; sorry for my redundancy regarding the other son.
Interesting, another Harvard alumni!
Obviously made from the extract of the toothpaste bush! :-O
Well it's not meat
Andy Williams was so funny

History Aside -- My seventh birthday seems to have been on a Sunday in 1963. In a few days, someone would assassinate Medger Evers and President Kennedy would give his “As Old as the Scriptures” civil rights address.
That second contestant had quite a handwriting.
John, accidentally, wished Arlene (Francis) a good evening, at the end the show.
Even the older people in those days were slim.
Definitely worth noting. Obesity in the general population hadn't yet reared its head.
Moon River. I loved it.
I wish I could enjoy Andy Williams’ disguised voice. Instead it grates on my eardrums like sandpaper. Could be just me. :-/
Nope, NOT just you!😄🙌
How very down to earth the stars were before the world turned sour and full of over priced fake talent.
Good for the Cows!
That long distance swimmer looked weirdly identical to my Mom (who was also a swimmer and same age as this woman).. but it's not her.. very weird experience
How do you know it wasn't her?
The name MAY have been a clue . . .
i might be your father...
@@catelynstark5689 She's not american
I must be the only one who dislikes Phyllis as a panelist! I do, however, love Dorothy's "bird nest" hairstyles of this period- so pretty.
She had that young perky, giggling, bubbly, personality that was so common in the 60s and of course the ultimate was Goldie Hawn
I've expressed my distaste for Mrs. Adolph Green else where, so you are not alone. In her defense, she seemed much more adept to password or even TTTT. for some reason, I don't find her so obnoxious on those programs.
I can't say I dislike Ms. Newman, but she did always act like she had 18 cups of coffee too many before coming out on stage!
He sounds like Stuart on Mad TV 😂
Im sure she was a nice person. But... Ever since I saw her cheat continuously on Password, I am just turned off by Phyllis Newman
She's AWFUL! And her voice is like nails on a chalkboard. Sadly, she ruins things for me because I have to ff through her screeeeeetchy tone.
I’m sure Cerf didn’t help his son get into Harvard at all😉
Andy you very great your fake voice very cute and funny
Where is Arlene?
Green vegetables
Cerf cheating on mystery guest? How would he know that?
His nosy wife would always find out who the MG was and she would tell the obnoxious and creepy perv.
Andy Williams - one of the greatest voices - the funny voice he used was later adopted by Micheal Jackson
I don’t know why they had a contestant after the mystery guest. That usually short changed the last contestant.
Funny I utterly love her, she's brilliant, super smart and very very beautiful.
Different strokes for different folks. I always enjoyed her and never picked up on the obnoxious behavior of which you speak. Apparently she was doing something right to remain with the show for all of those years.
He very well his fake voice very cute and ridiculously

Maybe I 'Liked' and maybe I didn't ;)
Is spaghetti a vegetable?
depends on what kind. if its made of vegetables, usually for people who are going on diets or want to be healthier, then yes. but traditionally, the noodles in spaghetti are a grain product for they are made out of flour.
I love Andy Williams but his responses were increasingly annoying!! LOL
Thought it was clever and anyway the audience loved it.
I never did care much for Phyllis Newman.
Strange, neither did I but cannot give any reason why!??!
Love these videos!
@@aileen694 A real dingbat
i think shes nice :)) shes a pretty good panelist but not as preferable as ms francis, mr cerf, mr allen (both steve and fred XD), ms kilgallen and mr bishop
Andy was married to Claudine "sure shot" Longet when this episode was made.
At 17.40 Bennet Cerf turns his head sideways.....then next time around he 'guesses' that the celeb is Andy Williams 'out of the blue'. Suspicious.
I think he knew immediately. See first question.
Dorthy at 4:03... I'm in LOVE!!!!
I used to watch The Andy Williams show every week until the horrible Osmond Brothers became regulars. YUCK!
The Osmonds were awesome and Andy loved them...
This contestant is clueless.
Why does Daly always ask if it is "Miss or Mrs."? Seems like it is none of his business.
G. Green - He’s not prying into personal matters; he asks so he knows how to address the person in the course of the game. Courteous manners from that time. :)
@@lauracollins4195 Yet he called Arlene Francis and Dorothy Kilgallen "Miss Arlene" and "Miss Dorothy Killgallen"...
@@lauracollins4195 Yep, thanks..
Because John Charles Daly is a gentleman, and wants to address them by their proper title. A man is called Mr. whether he's married or not, but a woman is only called Mrs. if she's married.
I don't why the swimmer couldn't have worn her swimsuit. Yummy!
+Joe Postove
Because that would have given away her line, silly! Besides, with a last name of Revell, she should have worn a bolero. Leave the swimsuit to Bo Derek.
