As you can see by the crusted over eyes of the first rabbit caught (once Apollo lets me show it), it is infected with the myxoma virus. Myxomatosis was discovered in South America during the late 1800's. It was intentionally introduced into Australia in 1950 in an attempt to control the problematic rabbit population. Two years later the disease was introduced into France and found it's way into Britain a short while after. It's unknown whether it was intentionally introduced into the UK, but once in the country, it was certainly encouraged to spread.
Allowing the ferret to see the rabbit after it’s dispatched will encourage the ferret to go back to ground. Otherwise they may keep searching for it. I give Apollo lots of time here.

These rabbits are collected for food, for my ferrets and people. This is a free range meat, that has lived a free life. These rabbits will be controlled even without me. By taking them myself, the meat is used. Ferreting is an environmentally friendly method of harvesting free range meat.

I knew I was in heaven as soon as I heard the first dook......as I am sure Apollo was too!! My big boy, Leopold, was a vocal dooker. I had him while in college (circa 1997) and he ruled my parent's house (aka he was their grandchild). 😀😀

I had a kitten & a friend dumped ferrets off on me to care for & I tried to introduce the three & they jumped my kitten so I got my kitten safely before they could do any damage other than scaring her, but when she got bigger she was wanting revenge for her attack as a kitten. I finally sadly had to give the ferrets away but I loved them & wished it would have worked out with the three

This is amazing.
Here in New Zealand the ferret is one of, if not THE MOST dangerous pests - they were introduced for rabbit control, but instead absolutely decimated our native animals, especially the kiwi (flightless bird).
Millions are spent each year to try to eradicate the ferret. .....This is all I have ever known about them.
To see one used here as a helpful pest control method is mind blowing!!

Probably a dumb question, but is there a method to training ferrets to hunt? I know they are natural predators, but is this pure instinct behavior or partial training?
Instinct and experience. The first time down a hole they will wander and explore. Over time, once they understand what’s going on, they will actively search for rabbits. They know what the nets do, what the rumbling of a spade above is and so on through experience.
Zeus Polecat Does male or female matter, and what about being "clipped"? Ferrets fascinate me. I've got two store bought fur snakes and assume they aren't bred or cut out for hunting.
Only that males TEND to be bigger, they are more likely to overpower a rabbit below ground and therefore can require more digging, so down to personal preference. Being castrated won't impede working ability. Prey drive needs to be in tact, that needs to be thought about when choosing which ferrets to breed. Ferrets that are bred to make better pets or for fancy colours may have lost some prey drive.

Bunnies for stew pot and a hearty ferret’s share for a few days. I’m glad he turned away when he killed the rabbits. I love rabbits and have kept them as pets but know there are those you keep and those you eat. Very nice ferreting.

Hello! I love your videos. It is very cool to see this natural way of hunting rabbits. I wonder if it would be possible to attach a small camera to one of the ferrats to see where they go. However the footage might be too shakey. Just an idea :)

Ever thought about doing a video on the history of ferreting? You seem to have this down to as near an art as possible.
I am thinking of ways to broaden the channel a bit. I'm not as interested in scripts/commentary as I am with the filming/editing side of things but It's not off the table.
That would be great. I think people would also like to see an explanation of all the equipment and what it takes to train and care for your ferrets. Are there any particular things to think about, like the possibility of injuries from the rabbits?
