We easily remove the agitator using your video and located the leak. Cost of parts and labor for repair at this point means that we're buying a new unit. But thanks again for your help.

Thank you so much for this! I tried several different ways of reefing on this for hours until I saw this. The critical step is letting the agitator soak. I let mine soak for about half an hour in hot water. After draining, a few good tugs with rope made it pop right off. I’ll be following your posts from now on.
Thank you for this video. I bought the part from a local appliance repair shop for $16 and replaced it in a few minutes. Agitator came out easy. Coupler took some persuading. Pushing it back down like you showed in the video a couple times helped the most I think. The teeth look okay on the old one until I ran a screwdriver around the inside of the coupler and all the gear shaped gunk started falling out. Works good as new.
Hey dude very helpfull....saw the video. .was able to lift agitator with rubber gloves..removed coupling..went to get part.. (23.18$..at electro place 4minutes from my work)..came back and installed. ..took under 1 minute to be exact. ..started machine wash cycle...works like a charm !!..cant thank you enough !!👍👍👍👍
Great video, I used a cargo tie down strap which allowed me to keep my hands out of the machine and the extra length help snap it right out with hardly any effort.

They were showing the same type of GE but evidently using the inside of another video. I thought someone had placed the plastic divider in upside down and was getting ready to drill a hole in it to remove. Thankfully I looked for the part before I destroyed it because I couldn't find that part so I new something else was going on. I have seen your videos before and you have always come through for me.

My problem is the agitator lifts up on its own too easily, usually during a spin cycle causing the agitator to rumble around inside the basket. I have been just pushing it back down but it keeps happening. Is it the agitator or the coupler, or both? It looks like the agitator has been glued onto the bottom of the basket - there is alot of light brownish stuff on the underside of the agitator and on the bottom of the basket.

Too bad the Video title was not more specific, this is not about replacing an GE Washer Agitator. That's not what's being replaced. He's replacing the GW Washer coupler and NOT the complete agitator.
Video helped, another video made me believe I had to remove a cap to get to bolt or nut and cap wouldn't remove so I when into destruct mode then I found your video. I used an old nylon belt and it came right off, belt fairly narrow and figured I could get a better grip. Are all GE top loader agitators universal or the same??
Time for mine to get replaced. The fins have broken off leaving sharp points that are making holes in everything. I'm probably going to look for one with a spiral design instead of the fins.

I had to use an impact wrench to get the 7/16 bolt off but after a long fight it came loose. I could only find one chunk of one dog they were just shredded. Time to get some dogs.
I'm in the process of changing out the copuler in my washer I've unscrewed the bolt but I can't get the coupler of the motor shaft do you have any suggestions of how to get it off
+Tiffany Martin Soaking it for a while helps. Wiggling it as best you can, while it's soaking will help it penetrate. With anything rusted or degraded, worst case scenario is to cut it out... You're replacing it anyway.

Two questions: 1. If there's no bolt, what's the point of removing the cap? 2. Isn't that a tiny hole for a set screw down there on the slope of the agitator?
+rossle70 Most washers, other than GE, have a bolt. 2) Don't know what tiny hole you're referring to - if it's near that cap you're talking about, then that is there for drainage. The cap should be positioned below the hole. Good luck.
The little holes are the size of a flat head screw driver and I think they are just for letting the softer out. That is the only thing I could figure out.
I also have a GE model, after I pull out the agitator. How do I snap it back securely? I put it back by pushing it down, but it jumped out while it was washing again. Would you please give me some suggestion on how to put it back securely? Thank you!
The agitator in my washing machine seems like it's coming up off the coupler and maybe that's why it's not agitating properly. I believe it's the same washer in this video, so there's nothing bolting the agitator down to the coupler. I tried turning it clockwise and counter-clockwise to see if it would lock into place on the coupler once it's shacked in, but it won't. I removed the coupler and all of the teeth where it bolts in looks good, so I'm lost. :/
You're probably right. One or the other has worn down. If we were doing the repair, we'd replace both the agitator and coupler. The looseness has probably damaged both parts, and although it might work initially, the problem will likely return. Needs to have a very snug fit.
Not sure what's going on. Shaft is fine. Nothing else would make it do up or down. If you're transmission isn't toast, assume your coupler is slipping on the drive shaft, especially if the transmission is free and spinning properly. Good luck!
I have a Whirlpool Supreme 70 old washer, the agitator bearing seems to be dry, makes a squeeling vibration noise if it doesn't turn on the spin cycle. I took the cap off and there is a brass threaded shaft surrounded with steel. I soaked it with WD40 and just can't get it off. Do you know if this is plastic that fits against plastic like the one you do in this video, or is my shaft rusted into the plastic? Anybody know?
+Melissa Berry Totally different problem. If you think it's an issue below it, then check the belt. It depends on the model, but generally the transmission wheel spins both directions. If it doesn't, then it could be the transmission - note that a few models can only spin one direction due to clutch engagement... this is beyond the scope of this video.
I think my GE model is older even than the one you illustrated. I pulled off the agitator and was presented with this column for a model WWA7070GALAD. Looks like agitator spline replacement part is AP2044578. Do I need a special wrench to remove something to get the old AP2044578 off? (Part of it, the thick rubber bit with the spline-channels, is stuck way up in the plastic agitator cover - I'm not even sure I can get it out from up there, yet, but no point trying if I don't know how to put a new model on the agitator shaft shown in the picture. i66.tinypic.com/nwmrs3.jpg
I see my agitator moving clockwise as it should as the machine is in wash mode, but I am also able to turn it by hand counterclockwise easily. I can turn it either direction, easily. Hummmmm............

This is my issue too! Did you fix it yet? All mine has is a metal rod sticking up? No plastic piece. Help!
I can't get the new coupler to go back on...I cleaned the grooves out as best I could...Do I have it lined up wrong? Or should I hammer it on?

I used a Rhino air bag under each side and it popped right off.

If it doesn't seat well, either the agitator or the coupler is damaged. It should fit firmly and stay in place.

dplavins Keep soaking. Push it up and down to get it wiggling. If it wiggled a bit then the water will help loosen it up. Worst case is to cut it off.
Funny thing is you don't have to take the lid magnet off just set another magnet on there... works perfectly yep a girl figured that out!! LoL

Don't rule out problems in the drive shaft. Pull up on it with the coupler removed and see how much play there is.

There's maybe about a half of an inch of play when I move the drive shaft up and down.
Not sure what's going on. Shaft is fine. Nothing else would make it do up or down. If you're transmission isn't toast, assume your coupler is slipping on the drive shaft, especially if the transmission is free and spinning properly. Good luck!

No... that squealing won't be coming from there. The agitator is floating and secure. Squealing is coming from something underneath. Good luck!
Just pull a strong magnet off of your fridge and not off of the washer lid
