"Only" 5 years, because he lost a dear friend (i.e. the original Master) - Tom Baker = 7 years and then the "always 3 years / filming blocks" started, but they put Colin Baker on "parental leave", because they halted the show due to different reasons - the "movie" was one failed pilot set on the turn of 1999/2000, but aired in late spring of 1996.
And New Who had some very experienced actors piloting the TARDIS - suddenly a world-wide phenomenon, it catapulted some of them into international awareness also.

There's a passable chance that the reason they're shooting SO far in advance (assuming we don't see season two before 2025 that is) is they may be budgeting in some time got Ncuti of the rest of the cast to go and do other things, and then come back to do season 3 later in 2025 for broadcast in '26.

Regarding the "spare Doctor", what I didn't like was that there was no pay off. He's here (or there); now what? Apparently, nothing.

To me weather or not thry did anything with the hand after the doctor funneled the remaining regeneration energy into it as Matt said right before he regenerated that it still counted as a regeneration even though he didn’t change his face so the doctor we saw in the rest of the episode and the specials was the next regeneration people seem to easily overlook that aspect of cause the hand grew a body when Donna touched it’s container

There is a payoff, storywise: the Doctor can have a break and heal without this happening on screen and without it feeling disgenuine by being a throwaway line.
When the Doctor rests and stops to heal, the story and show are over. This way, you can have both and have it feel earned without the show being over

I had a Fan site during it's run and I'd make video clips from the show and jot down information on certain scenes to put on the site. I think 4, as RTD has officially said on his Instagram earlier this year, the writing series 16(s3) and preproduction is under way. Series 17(s4) is in planning and early writing.
Also Ncuti said in entertainment weekly he did not want to leave without facing the daleks & went in quite an in depth answer about daleks. So I take that in that they will be absent from season 2
quote: "I’ve heard chats about me not ever facing a Dalek. I’d be so angry if that’s the case !"
"By the time that I’m done with Doctor Who, I better have faced a Dalek. What on earth would be the point of me being Doctor Who without facing a Dalek!!"

With Millie staying for season 2, it will be the first time that RTD has showran the show where there is some continuity in the Tardis in between seasons. In RTD1 it was Rose and then Rose and Ten and then Ten and Martha and then Ten and Donna. I'm excited to see for RTD does when he has more time to build a Doctor companion dynamic compared to what he's ever had even if it is less episodes.

I'd really like to see an actor in the role at least 5 years again like Pertwee and T. Baker (7 years, not 10).
Let the actor fully explore their version of the Doctor and see them change and progress over their tenure. Granted, we've seen a deliberate character arc with Capaldi, but I really enjoyed seeing Tennant's evolution between the 10th and 14th Doctors as well. Three years is just enough time to see an actor and the writing team get comfortable with a Doctor, but then they're gone before they can really go deeper. That said, if Ncuti feels he's done all that he can do with the character in 3-4 years and wants to move on, I'm all for that, too.

Well, I would say David Tennant's name is pretty big nowdays and yet, he just did the specials after coming back and he MIGHT appear in season 1, but he didn't get a whole new season or a spin-off so I don't think that the fact Ncuti is famous would mean that they want to keep him around longer then the usual 3 seasons. In fact, that could be the opposite, really. Big names want big money, you know? We have to wait and see, but for that reason alone, I definitely can't see that being the case for more 15th Doctor.

To selectively say Tennant was brought back because of his popularity is true but we need to be completely honest and as the final season of Jodie's era came to an end the ratings were dire and the show once more was being ignored. Whilst it is a hard balance we must accept unpleasant truths and one being that the Chibnall overall was seen as a failure) with perhaps three of four good aspects). Tennant was a desperate attempt to save the show from death and whether people liked it or not it seemed to have done the trick.

I may be stating the obvious but, from a production point of view, the introduction of bi-regeneration (is that the right term?) could allow actors that play The Doctor to take a break from the show.
For example, if after 2 or 3 series, Ncuti Gatwa wanted to step down a bi-regeneration could be written into an episode and we could have a series or two with another actor as The Doctor before he returns to the role. Potentially we could have several Doctors happening at once.

Disney definitely want Ncuti to be the new Tom Baker or David Tennant (the face of the show) but to a much larger global audience so if they got their way and his era is received well, he would probably be staying for a good 10 years like Robert Downey Jr over at Marvel. Actually both Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker said they found playing the role of the Doctor very easy because they played the role just as the people they were in real life. In fact Tom in particular was renowned for this. So much so he became too silly in the Douglas Adams era becoming very dominant behind the scenes and telling everyone else what to do.
Capaldi we must remember was almost two decades older and mordern who is much more demanding to make today.

If Tennant can be 10 and 14 what’s to stop ncuti from being 15 and 17 or 15 and 18 with guest doctor(s) in between.

Recalling to a popular UA-camr the other day how Tom Baker's departure required the younger section of the audience to actually be re-educated about the nature of regeneration, I kept thinking I was talking about the evacuation of Saigon. The facts are that if the actor sticks around for five years or so, that's the bit of fandom most affected at the end of it. So I can never decide whether hanging on to the Tardis doors for dear life, or doing two series before beating a retreat, is the best way for things to unfold. It did get a bit silly in the mid-1980s of course, when we had three in the space of about three years.

TV and attention spans are changing and I doubt the audiences they’re aiming for will look up from their phones after the second season. I predict that we may only get a few more Doctors over the next few years and the show may rest. All this Whoniverse stuff is coming after most of the MCU and DCU multiverse stuff is winding down to a halt. The spin offs will be interesting because you will also have to engage a new audience to characters and lore they’re not familiar with. True. William Hartnell was a big deal in the British movie industry. Had his own fan club and everything. And he was a household name thanks to The Army Game. Jon Pertwee was a major radio personality before he was in DW. Tom Baker wasn’t too well known but had been in the highly successful Nicholas & Alexandra, and was the principle villain in a Sinbad movie. Peter Davidson had no movie career but was a household name from All Creatures. Colin was a household name from The Brothers. Paul McGann, aside from being one of the well-known McGann brothers, had been in the highly acclaimed Withnail And I. Ecclestone had been in numerous movies and big U.K. tv serials and Tennant had been in Casanova and Goblet Of Fire. And none of them get bigger than John Hurt.

@@nicfisher8266 The actual Church on Ruby Road figure is 7.49 million, the 4.73m is only overnight viewers ignoring iPlayer. Which is where the flaw using that number shows: BBC and iPlayer viewers are only a fraction of the viewers. Disney+ does not release viewing figures, so none of those are counted. Comparing it to other BBC viewing figures, only Call The Midwife beat it at 7.66m viewers, which is a relatively tiny difference. Or to compare it to another UK figure, ITV's highest rating was 5.71m (for Vera).
Comparisons to older seasons like Tennants original seasons are also flawed, as the landscape is wildly different. There was no iPlayer. Now there's many more channels and streaming services, not only offering more choice, but also more convenience. Some will watch after they get back from a vacation over the holidays, some will wait for entire seasons to get released in order to binge. Looking at the 7-day figure can give a good comparisons to other current figures from the same region, but it does not hold up to comparisons over longer times.
