Was the music real for the characters or was it just background audio for the tv audience to set the mood and act as an auditory cue. I cant remember if anyone ever commented on the Christmas carol. I just remember the continual mention of the physical manifestation of the snow.

They really need to add about 10-15 minutes of run time. All these stories would feel so much more complete if they just had a little more time in each episode.
The charm with the Older Seasons of Who is you had a lot more episodes in general to get to know and actually connect with the characters. Her Family felt a bit 2 dimensional just given we had so little interaction with the Sundays.
The Ruby's mom reveal was a big letdown for me, primarily because of the snow thing. Now, if there's a separate -- significant -- reason for the "snow thing," then I'm all in. But the significance of that is major. It's gotta be the elephant in the room that was left hanging.
Yeah I hope she got something special going on from her fathers side (although she's human), I want to excuse everything but that snow needs a resolution in the Christmas special !
In the end of the episode it’s snowing around mrs Flood and it doesn’t seem to be (or at least I don’t think it is) winter. I think she is the reason of it all.
Agreed, I have no issue with the reveal but as has been said on these videos, it was the clues and red herrings which were misleading. I mean there is no way the actor was a 15 year old in a cloak in 2004, her hands were much older and who was around to witness the pointing to a street name which wasn’t actually there previously either. I’m actually inclined to believe the hooded figure was not actually the Mother afterall but Mrs Flood. That would make sense as it didn’t have to be the actual Mother dropping her daughter at the church for both to be true.
I honestly think it’s a completely different thing that will eventually get explained. We all just assumed that the identity of Rubys parents had something to do with the snow. My money is on having an explanation in time for the Christmas special.
Streaming has neutered regular shows, LOST used to have 24-25 episodes a season such that when it was a rerun or recap episode, we would riot. This explains why 5 people in the show got DUIs...
They should have let Sutekh find out who Ruby’s mom is , then he could say, “What?! That’s it? That’s why I haven’t killed you yet?” And Ruby says, “Yep,” before leashing the dog. Lol

I'm disappointed and flabbergasted that they had a big song and dance number, they had Jonathan Groff, and they had Bonnie Langford, but the three were kept apart.

Honestly, I think the all the problems of this season simply stem from the fact that there are only 8 episodes, it’s simply not enough time to create compelling stories with compelling endings. Despite all the shortcomings, this is best doctor who in many years
I think this episode sums up exactly how I feel about every episode and that's simply that although they have been good and enjoyable they just don't quite seem to have stuck the landing, I also think that despite ncuti being great in the role I feel one he has personally been missing is that one seen where it shows just how powerful or terrifying the Dr can be, I'm thinking Matt Smith calling the aliens back to scare the hell out of them or David Tennant telling the vashtan narada there in the biggest library in the universe and to look him up
A successful finale should wrap up the main story in a satisfying way while leaving loose ends so we're excited to come back. I've been travelling with The Doctor all my lives and I've never felt so misled that I was still cross about it four days later. This finale landed like a bag of mud. I'll definitely be back for Christmas but right now, I don't care who her Dad is... A butcher probably... Mrs. Flood... Constantly staring at the camera saying, "Guess who I am!!!"... It's not satisfying in any way. ALSO!!! In the Doctor's Wife... As a thought, "Before I go... I just wanted to say... Sutekh is on the roof, you should probably look into that." I'm Irked. Well, and truly... Irked.
I know, right? 😂 Is there a another Sutekh still sitting on top of the 14th Doctor's Tardis, currently in Donna Nobles garden? Sutekh must of had a hell of a time holding on while the 11th Doctor's Tardis was repeatedly exploded during Big Bang 2 😂. Its like with the Timeless Child, trying to retcon a huge new event into the Doctors past raises more issues than it's worth.

I have a theory… a wild theory… here goes… apologies for the length: Louise Alison Miller is not Ruby’s mum… there I said it… Mrs Flood, the story teller gave her a happy ending, but it’s a lie. And we’ll learn this next season. Everyone’s been like… if she’s a nurse how did Davina not find her, if she’s a regular person how could they not know? Maybe because she wasn’t a thing until Mrs Flood brought her into being via story. Even the text messages Ruby was receiving in the TARDIS about her dad, while saying she’ll just be a minute, seemed too perfectly timed to push her to leave the Doctor. The snow can’t just be a weird manifestation without explanation. “Doctor Who” has always asked for a little suspension of disbelief, but it hasn’t really ever said “well that’s all you get and we don’t care if it doesn’t make sense”… so I think this is another RTD misdirection with a (hopefully) satisfying explanation coming soon. Even the blurb by the Doctor at unit, his suggesting the figure was pointing at the road sign, then us seeing the recorded footage show the sign appearing out of nothing, while we all know it wasn’t there before… goes back to the Doctor telling us in the Time Window that his memory of the moment keeps changing… and these changes were reflected in the recording. We know, because he said, that memory is the most powerful thing… so him having a (false) memory of a sign made it so. But of course this wasn’t Ruby’s mum “naming her” because other than the Doctors’ new recollection of this moment, no one else was there to see this… even when poor Chidozie was in the time window he didn’t see a sign post at which she may have been pointing, he was talking about her pointing up the street. And finally, I’m partly feeling all this because of Mrs Flood’s declaration “I had such plans” as she and Cherry fade to dust, followed by “that clever boy” as she and Cherry return. I feel this gives credence to the notion Mrs Flood is a god/god-like entity who knows of the others (her speech to Cherry as the dust of death comes for them) but was also doing her own thing only to be stymied by the god of gods Sutekh destroying everything (including her) before she could finish her own plans. But now she’s back from dust and Sutekh is dead, she’s the big enemy of the next season for sure. But in short… RTD is not going to leave this many holes in the plot… he’ll plug them all… in time. -------- Meanwhile, that final scene with Ruby and family standing in the hall… Cherry can clearly get up and around… she could make her own damn tea! 🤣
In the scene where the Doctor, Ruby and Mel go into that office to look for DNA matching Ruby's in order to find her mother, the computer makes a "frzzz" noise just becoming up with the name.
Definitely not they listed way too many gods for them to just be done with them. Not to mention Mrs. Flood’s declaration that she would storm Cherry’s makers gates in her TRUE NAME. Which feels like it relates back to Harriet’s spiel at the end of The Legend of Ruby Sunday where she said “his one true name forevermore is… Sutekh”

I agree with Ellie’s idea about ending with the scream. Then come back with one more episode and stretch things out a bit. Give Mel more to do before she gets taken over.
When Sean said he felt like more time should have passed before Louise was in the apartment... directly after that was the scene of Mrs Flood on the roof wearing that coat, that made me assume that months had passed cuz why would she be wearing that if it were still the middle of summer? Just cuz there wasn't snow on the ground doesn't mean it couldn't have been cold (obviously lol). Plus that makes more sense if the fact that Ruby and Louise have already made plans to try to meet her father...
I think that with the clues laid out to us the best solution and reveal would have been for Ruby to be the daughter of Susan Triad - hear me out as I explain below: -firstly with the DNA screen it would have displayed several names, years, Ruby would have been confused - ultimately leading to her “I don’t understand” line. These names would be any and all Susan Twist characters on file as they share the same DNA being clone like acolytes of Sutekh. -When showing Sutekh the screen Ruby would explain to him - the god of death brought the gift of life. -The Doctor can then explain that every time he landed on earth it brought more truth, more LIFE to Susan Triad - so much so she birthed a child - but she gave the child away as something in her (subconsciously being an acolyte of death) made her give the child up. (this would also explain why she pointed when the Doctor turned up - she was pointing at Sutekh) -Ruby standing with Sutekh could be the better explanation of how life is brought back - the power of a god flows through Ruby as she is the result of his powers - she can reverse the sands of death in some form of struggle with Sutekh - perhaps even involve the Ruby on Sutekhs headpiece - hell maybe even link that to why Susan Triad decided to drop her at a road called RUBY road? -The Doctor and Ruby leashing up Sutekh can then play out as per the episode with the added connotation that they are spreading Rubies power of life via Sutekh in the vortex. -Fun and happy reunion when Ruby and Susan Triad hug - Susan will remember having a child but the memory has only just come back to her. The story comes full circle - Ruby is still an ordinary human at the end - The snow can be explained as a side effect of being a creation from the gods - why snow? Death is cold, death is ice - Ruby made it snow because it made those magical elements of death come to LIFE. There is a nice parallel to the start of the two-parter thinking Susan Triad was the doctors grandaughter and actually she isn’t the doctors family - she’s Rubys family. I dunno - my head canon just thinks this to be a far superior resolution.
The thing about the snow buggs me the most. But the ending tells us that this had to do with Ms.Flood snd will be claryfied in the X-Mas special (white furry coat, snow...)
Didn't Mrs Flood say something on the lines of she's going to invade Heaven? I think she's definitely going to be evil. And oddly enough with the theories going around, is something the Beast pretty much said lol.
At least, she thinks of herself as going to heaven after death, not hell. I’m pretty sure she is bad news, but are this little things that keep me on doubt.

With Empire of Death being an underwhelming experience full of very obvious discrepancies (such as the sign pointing), and the season as a whole dealing extensively with memory/ perceptions manipulating reality or otherwise not being what they seem, I'm beginning to wonder if most of what we saw didn't really happen (at least in the way we think it happened). I wonder if RTD is treating the guaranteed 2 seasons as a part 1 and part 2 of one larger season without actually calling it that (since viewers reacted negatively when that was done a few years ago). Because it feels really odd for Ruby to say her tearful goodbyes and the Doctor to wordlessly leave, only for them to bring Millie Gibson back next season to presumably wrap up Ruby's search for her "totally normal" parents.
I probably have never disagreed more with Ellie on this entire season of Who… and I absolutely love that fact! Contrary to most folks on the internet I don’t look for critiques or personalities on the internet to parrot my opinion back to me. Some of my favorite moments of Who & Trek Culture are when I go into a video with a completely different perspective and take than I. Often if hearing a different opinion doesn’t change my own view in an intelligent way I at least appreciate seeing things in a way I never would have.
It's the unrealness of the ending with Ruby's birth-mum that makes me think it might all be an illusion of some kind - a fairy tale ending - and that the real (less happy) truth is yet to come.

I think the biggest issue with the season as a whole is that it was at least 4 episodes too short. If they had 12 episodes to play with, we could have had 3 more adventures to show the Doctor and Ruby bonding, and then have a 3 parter finale, with cliff hangers at the Sutekh reveal and then the death of all UNIT personnel. But as for the spoons, the Doctor hasn't had enough spoons since the 7th Doctor
Is it just me or was Sutek's rebuilding of himself dependant on the Tardis itself? I'm not sure it was well communicated, but he drew strength from it and was completely tied to it, I felt like he couldn't just abandon the Tardis, and even if he could, he didn't want to. It was his prize, he was attached to it psychologically if not metaphysically.
Over fifty years after my birth, and adoption, I met my birth father and managed to connect with some of my siblings. (Alas my birth-mother had passed away.) With my father it was an instant connection, and one of my brothers I have regular communications. Alas some of my siblings are "unsure" about a sudden relative, and I respect that. But immediate bonding does, and did, for me, happen! As always, thank you so very much all, for the videos. Next season I'd like to see an episode with Susan (Carole Ann Ford) and Richard E. Grants Doctor. And more answers!
For me, one of the biggest issues was the short season. I think 8 episodes for such a massive villain was too short. If I were doing the finale, I would've made it a three part episode. Keep the first episode the way it was and make the second a kind of Mad Max style journey through the dying Universe with The Doctor and Ruby and Mel visiting all these different planets as they get dusted and really build up that hopelessness until the end with The Doctor deciding he's going to stop running and face Sutekh. And then have the 3rd part be him coming up with the plan to stop Sutekh and then dealing with Ruby's mother. I just think with such a small season we didn't get enough of a chance to build that bond with Ruby and The Doctor which gave me Dan Lewis flashbacks to The Flux and Power of The Doctor where we didn't get enough time with him either. Overall Series 14 was better then the Chibnal era but not as good as the OG Russel era or the Moffat era.
The Theory of Mrs Flood being the Rani holds well because not only the "Hiding myself away" line, indicating shes a Time Lord after the doctor says it in releation to regeneration, but dressing as companions, as the Rani once did, dressing as and pretending to be Mel after the 6th Doctor regenerates into the 7th.
Also rain is an anagram of Rani, and rain causes floods, and we know how much RTD loves anagrams, and hiding an anagram behind a layer of abstraction is on brand for RTD2
Is Sutekh a copy of the original Sutekh which I assume would have been attached to David Tennant's Tardis? Did he replicate when the Tardis replicated?

The reason it works is because they all literally died. Think about it, if you died and came back to life, you would likely want to deal with any regrets you had before you kick the bucket again. Workplace Formality be damned
If the trickster was brought back, I want it to be that someone from the doctors past agreed on a deal that made the doctor disappear and we get a doctor lite episode but have the SJA companions help the doctors companion(s) or something along the lines of that.
(Another separate take) I think, while the disintegrate even would have been better as a cliffhanger, what we got still had me at the edge of my seat. Due to all the back and forth between will everyone live or not since classic who and 2005, I really can't guess much anymore. I, personally also dont theorize mid episode. I just let the story drive until I hit the end title sequence.
There is too much of the Doctor defeating these villains so easily is the last two minutes. It took a whole other episode to defeat the Silence. Martha needed a whole year to defeat the Master. They put a leash on this guy and that was it, too easy of a defeat
The Doctor has hardly defended any enemies this season barring the goblins, the snot monster and Sutekh. The rest were defeated by AI dead dad, The Beatles, Ruby, then Rogue
I think there's still more to come with Ruby's story yet. The cloak and time changing, pointing to the road sign. I think Ruby's Mum did notice the Doctor and know who she was. My theory is that the Trickster is involved somehow. I was thinking about it, and while yes Ruby and her Mum are both 100% human, but so was Sarah Jane and Peter Dalton in "The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith". The Trickster set things in motion. I think that could be the case this time too, for reasons and motifs yet to be revealed.

There was no mention of mavity that I saw in the finale. Also, Ruby's father's surname is Garnet, another gemstone that is red in color. Finally, as to Mrs. Flood, I like the theory that we're watching a show within a show and Mrs. Flood is the narrator. But a flood is another body of water, so I wonder if there's a River Song or Melody Pond connection....
Rose, Jackie and metacrysis 10 are still dusted, Sutekh put a Susan on that world when the TARDIS landed there, but since they couldn't go back to that dimension, that world couldn't have been un-dusted when they took Sutekh on a walk though the time vortex
I immediately thought that Rose was controlling the guns in the ceiling/walls, bringing them online and fine tuning the targeting etc. I mean, she is Donna’s daughter, she might not have noticed Sutekh because she was distracted by a particularly hard Wordle, but I have faith that the Temple-Nobles have improved since the Metacrisis. 😂
I have the feeling that this wasn't the full ending since RTD said himself that Ruby's story isn't complete yet. Especially since there are still some loose ends
@@gtc9966this a absolutely feels like the theme this season. I’m not saying that you’re having a go at RTD but personally, this theme says less about RTD’s writing, and more about the run time.
So for me, I think the “spoon” scene was less about the metal and more about MEMORY. Notice how after the Doctor mentions metal, she “remembers” her child. And when he “fed” the spoon to the screen, which is powered by memories in a Memory Tardis, it gets some power. I think the “metal” was just a way to trigger sentimentality and thus a memory.
You missed the point with the "Holodeck" scenes. Time was continually changing while they were in there. The appearance of the Ruby Road sign and the light pole were changes in the timeline. What other changes can you spot? I saw others.
The problem is the show can't really respond to any reaction to Series 14 with Series 15 already completed. So either the issues will continue or they will be addressed anyway. I kind of hope that by this time next year people will be making retrospective views and going oh that's why all that happened.
This season has been about history changing (Mavity!) I honestly feel as if the mum was revealed to be normal because they believed they could find her at the end. At the start of the season Devina couldn't even find her because they didn't believe they could. I'm satisfied with the finale as I think there'll be more to come with the story next season, the changing of reality is definitely RTDs signature overarching plot thread
Why is this so hard for people to accept? By the Doctor's own admission, the forces around Ruby and the mystery of her mom made the situation. The moment the he, the TARDIS with Sutekh on its back set things into play by the adventure with the Goblins that moment on Ruby Road became altered with all the forces - perception filter, 73 yards, baby and all. He causes damage to the continuum wherever he goes - we saw that represented in his tomb in Name of the Doctor. He created his own puzzle and paradox. The mother and baby on the other planet? Well, compare Indira Varma and Varada Sethu. We just may have glimpsed the new companion as a baby in her mother's arms. It's a show that has had conflicting stuff happening for 60 years. If you have issues with how it is being run today, I have only three words: John Nathan Turner.
It's kind of interesting that sutekh didn't let go of the tardis for one millimeter. He didn't attack or anything it was all his minions. So have to agree with sean and ellie that he would be way scarier if he had lunged at the doctor or something like that.
I think the idea there is that all life moves towards death of its own accord. He doesn’t need to move or attack to kill anyone as all beings will face death in time. And that’s why he’s the one who waits.
It’s not the age disparity between Kate Stewart and Mr Sexy it’s the fact that she’s his boss and that power difference is too great to maintain a fair and healthy relationship
They kept mentioning the tardis perception filter but why hasn’t anyone tied that to the mystery of rubys mom it was the tardises trap for sutekh plus it would have been nice to have the tardis have traped him which is why he never left it
I found this finale very unsatisfying with very disappointing pay-offs. It also didn't tie in well with the rest of the season. The whole reunion of Ruby with her birth family was a very Brady Bunch ending. Also, I'm unconvinced that Ruby's mother would have such long manicured nails as a working nurse...

@7:26 As I have said in comments on other videos, all-powerful gods (e.g., god of gods) generally do not "do" anything themselves. The always work through others/minions. For example, the way that Greek gods used the various Greek "heroes" as the tools to do what that wanted done. They didn't do it themselves, but made the heroes to do it.
The episode sits better for me after a few watches, but I agree as it stands it was an anti-climax. That said, RTD's said Ruby's story isn't finished so once season 2 drops we'll be able to look at the bigger picture.
I do like the ruby mom reveal. I enjoyed the season but I do agree there is lot of questions. The cloak I think Russel went for the drama. The mom and the sign, is just silly I figured the living room scene was weeks later. I wish there was more stuff with Mel , though I thought Bonnie langford did a great job.
Thanks for a thoughtful, balanced discussion. It's all that we ask for, and to be honest, it's what we deserve. I've never found a problem with Ellie's "Ups and downs" - she tends to give "Ups" and "Downs" that are deserved, and they tend to have the same level of weight to them, when you follow the discussion that goes with them. The problem comes when every slightly positive item gets an "Up" spammed at the counter, but only major "Downs" get added to the counter. Maybe, if you recognise that the weighting of the "Ups" given is unbalanced, as you seem to suggest that you recognise, then the answer is to group a handful of the extremely minor items together, in the discussion, and then add only one point to the counter, for that group (or you just mention the positive items, but don't increase the counter, like happens with the minor negative items). And NEVER do what has been done, and I'm almost quoting here... "Jonathan Frakes - Up Up Up Up Up... just because I can". Yes, the "Ups and Downs" videos are only a "bit of fun"... but if you aren't going to take the count even slightly seriously, it makes the whole thing pointless, and not fun at all!! If the Ups and Downs aren't going to be balanced and deserved, then don't bother with them at all, because it means nothing, and is just a waste of your time (and your audience's time). The biggest problem throughout this series of Doctor Who has been the pacing, and not having enough episodes to do justice to the stories. More episodes, and splitting some of the stories into two-parters, would have allowed the writers to put more into the development of the plotlines (and include some character development elements), and would have allowed the audience more time to "bond" with the Doctor and Ruby... and appreciate how their relationship had had more time for them to bond, too! The Finale could have easily been a 3-parter, instead of a strong-ish first part, and a weak, plot-hole ridden, damp squib of a second part. It's like a firework.... light the blue paper and stand back, waiting for the excitement, but it just fizzles out, making a wet fart noise, instead of being a big bang. The result... don't go back to that firework, and don't buy that type again, in the future (in other words... Bye bye Doctor Who, because people will stop believing the mystery set-ups, and will stop watching). It is an irony that a modern version of a TV programme that heavily features "Time", gets the timing so wrong. Wouldn't the Doctor have had something... anything... metal within the Memory Tardis? No? Really, RTD... nothing? We certainly hope we see a lot more of Bonnie Langford in the UNIT spin-off (if we ever get that). Did anyone else expect to see East 17 join Mrs Flood on the roof, and break into a musical number... "Stay another day", perhaps? When you watch the "Tales of the Tardis" version of the "Pyramids of Mars", you see how Doctor Who can be done well.... time for pacing... time for character development and relationship growth... time to breathe, at the times when it is needed, with good action pieces, and suspense, that didn't rely on fabulous CGI, huge budgets, and fake mysteries (or a reset button). Doesn't Sean still look tired?
I need to watch the episodes of this season again. I'm thinking that if Sutekh can control others through time and space as their minion, surely something similar could happen with Ruby's birth mother? We don't know because what's shown to us is confusing and incomplete and leaves a bad taste. But I reckon that Sutekh manifesting into the Doctor's reality meant that they also developed some limits of physicality. And those limits are what the doctor exploited.
I just have this feeling that Mrs Flood is Lindy Pepper-Bean. Cosplaying companions aside ... it can't be a further coincidence how similar the actresses are aka very believable that one is the older version of the other. I would imagine that the AI from Dot and Bubble now sees the Dr as the enemy for ending it's scheme and has integrated with Lindy because of her connection with the Dr. They have been on an adventure through time and space trying to track him down which has made Lindy realise the error of her ways (seeing all his good etc) and she is in a battle internally with the AI hence the dark and light moments. Just look at Mrs Flood's stare in Cherry's bedroom and compare it to that of Lindy on the boat looking back at the Dr
What do you guys think of the idea of The Legend of Ruby Sunday (including the bit where UNIT and Kate being turned to sand) being the end of the season? Then Empire of Death would’ve been the Christmas Special with more runtime
With a show doing mystery characters you’re always gonna have people who hate it or love it you can’t please everyone and everyone’s gonna have their own thoughts and hopes for what that character would be so it’s a win loose situation you can’t please everyone
I have very much enjoyed your coverage of this season and found it mostly balanced and fair. It leaned a little into the fanboy but that was just part of the excitement of having a better Doctor Who back on our screens. There is a LOT of hate for this season on YT but that all has an agenda, which is ad revenue. I used to watch some of their channels but have switched off as they just want to find reasons to attack the show and it has gotten petty. Thank you both for keeping it entertaining and informative.
Bringing Sutek back was a great idea. Pyramids of Mars was one of my favorite episodes from the old show. The execution was TERRIBLE! He's been hitching a ride on the TARDIS? A teenage mother is wearing a cloak and dressed like a monk? She "names" her child by pointing at a sign.... that's not really there? Where did all the snow come from?? Memory = time, so memories can create a TARDIS??? NONE OF THIS MAKES ANY SENSE!!

I'm hoping you're more positive than the other day, but all entitled to their opinion.
My only real issue is that there wasn't ever any real explanation for the snow and the music that followed Ruby wherever she went.
Was the music real for the characters or was it just background audio for the tv audience to set the mood and act as an auditory cue. I cant remember if anyone ever commented on the Christmas carol. I just remember the continual mention of the physical manifestation of the snow.

The charm with the Older Seasons of Who is you had a lot more episodes in general to get to know and actually connect with the characters.

The Ruby's mom reveal was a big letdown for me, primarily because of the snow thing. Now, if there's a separate -- significant -- reason for the "snow thing," then I'm all in. But the significance of that is major. It's gotta be the elephant in the room that was left hanging.

In the end of the episode it’s snowing around mrs Flood and it doesn’t seem to be (or at least I don’t think it is) winter. I think she is the reason of it all.
Agreed, I have no issue with the reveal but as has been said on these videos, it was the clues and red herrings which were misleading. I mean there is no way the actor was a 15 year old in a cloak in 2004, her hands were much older and who was around to witness the pointing to a street name which wasn’t actually there previously either. I’m actually inclined to believe the hooded figure was not actually the Mother afterall but Mrs Flood. That would make sense as it didn’t have to be the actual Mother dropping her daughter at the church for both to be true.
I honestly think it’s a completely different thing that will eventually get explained. We all just assumed that the identity of Rubys parents had something to do with the snow. My money is on having an explanation in time for the Christmas special.

Sutekh must have been beyond the detection of the TARDIS because, In the Doctor's Wife, the TARDIS probably would have told the Doctor surely.

Honestly, I think the all the problems of this season simply stem from the fact that there are only 8 episodes, it’s simply not enough time to create compelling stories with compelling endings.

I think this episode sums up exactly how I feel about every episode and that's simply that although they have been good and enjoyable they just don't quite seem to have stuck the landing, I also think that despite ncuti being great in the role I feel one he has personally been missing is that one seen where it shows just how powerful or terrifying the Dr can be, I'm thinking Matt Smith calling the aliens back to scare the hell out of them or David Tennant telling the vashtan narada there in the biggest library in the universe and to look him up

A successful finale should wrap up the main story in a satisfying way while leaving loose ends so we're excited to come back. I've been travelling with The Doctor all my lives and I've never felt so misled that I was still cross about it four days later. This finale landed like a bag of mud. I'll definitely be back for Christmas but right now, I don't care who her Dad is... A butcher probably... Mrs. Flood... Constantly staring at the camera saying, "Guess who I am!!!"... It's not satisfying in any way. ALSO!!! In the Doctor's Wife... As a thought, "Before I go... I just wanted to say... Sutekh is on the roof, you should probably look into that."

I have a theory… a wild theory… here goes… apologies for the length:
Louise Alison Miller is not Ruby’s mum… there I said it… Mrs Flood, the story teller gave her a happy ending, but it’s a lie. And we’ll learn this next season.
Everyone’s been like… if she’s a nurse how did Davina not find her, if she’s a regular person how could they not know? Maybe because she wasn’t a thing until Mrs Flood brought her into being via story. Even the text messages Ruby was receiving in the TARDIS about her dad, while saying she’ll just be a minute, seemed too perfectly timed to push her to leave the Doctor.
The snow can’t just be a weird manifestation without explanation. “Doctor Who” has always asked for a little suspension of disbelief, but it hasn’t really ever said “well that’s all you get and we don’t care if it doesn’t make sense”… so I think this is another RTD misdirection with a (hopefully) satisfying explanation coming soon.
Even the blurb by the Doctor at unit, his suggesting the figure was pointing at the road sign, then us seeing the recorded footage show the sign appearing out of nothing, while we all know it wasn’t there before… goes back to the Doctor telling us in the Time Window that his memory of the moment keeps changing… and these changes were reflected in the recording.
We know, because he said, that memory is the most powerful thing… so him having a (false) memory of a sign made it so. But of course this wasn’t Ruby’s mum “naming her” because other than the Doctors’ new recollection of this moment, no one else was there to see this… even when poor Chidozie was in the time window he didn’t see a sign post at which she may have been pointing, he was talking about her pointing up the street.
And finally, I’m partly feeling all this because of Mrs Flood’s declaration “I had such plans” as she and Cherry fade to dust, followed by “that clever boy” as she and Cherry return. I feel this gives credence to the notion Mrs Flood is a god/god-like entity who knows of the others (her speech to Cherry as the dust of death comes for them) but was also doing her own thing only to be stymied by the god of gods Sutekh destroying everything (including her) before she could finish her own plans.
But now she’s back from dust and Sutekh is dead, she’s the big enemy of the next season for sure.
But in short… RTD is not going to leave this many holes in the plot… he’ll plug them all… in time.

In the scene where the Doctor, Ruby and Mel go into that office to look for DNA matching Ruby's in order to find her mother, the computer makes a "frzzz" noise just becoming up with the name.

When Sean said he felt like more time should have passed before Louise was in the apartment... directly after that was the scene of Mrs Flood on the roof wearing that coat, that made me assume that months had passed cuz why would she be wearing that if it were still the middle of summer? Just cuz there wasn't snow on the ground doesn't mean it couldn't have been cold (obviously lol). Plus that makes more sense if the fact that Ruby and Louise have already made plans to try to meet her father...
I think that with the clues laid out to us the best solution and reveal would have been for Ruby to be the daughter of Susan Triad - hear me out as I explain below:
-firstly with the DNA screen it would have displayed several names, years, Ruby would have been confused - ultimately leading to her “I don’t understand” line. These names would be any and all Susan Twist characters on file as they share the same DNA being clone like acolytes of Sutekh.
-When showing Sutekh the screen Ruby would explain to him - the god of death brought the gift of life.
-The Doctor can then explain that every time he landed on earth it brought more truth, more LIFE to Susan Triad - so much so she birthed a child - but she gave the child away as something in her (subconsciously being an acolyte of death) made her give the child up. (this would also explain why she pointed when the Doctor turned up - she was pointing at Sutekh)
-Ruby standing with Sutekh could be the better explanation of how life is brought back - the power of a god flows through Ruby as she is the result of his powers - she can reverse the sands of death in some form of struggle with Sutekh - perhaps even involve the Ruby on Sutekhs headpiece - hell maybe even link that to why Susan Triad decided to drop her at a road called RUBY road?
-The Doctor and Ruby leashing up Sutekh can then play out as per the episode with the added connotation that they are spreading Rubies power of life via Sutekh in the vortex.
-Fun and happy reunion when Ruby and Susan Triad hug - Susan will remember having a child but the memory has only just come back to her.
The story comes full circle - Ruby is still an ordinary human at the end - The snow can be explained as a side effect of being a creation from the gods - why snow? Death is cold, death is ice - Ruby made it snow because it made those magical elements of death come to LIFE.
There is a nice parallel to the start of the two-parter thinking Susan Triad was the doctors grandaughter and actually she isn’t the doctors family - she’s Rubys family.
I dunno - my head canon just thinks this to be a far superior resolution.
The tease of Sarah Jane’s Trickster had better mean he’s making the jump and he should bring Odd Bob and the Nightmare Man with him 😆

With Empire of Death being an underwhelming experience full of very obvious discrepancies (such as the sign pointing), and the season as a whole dealing extensively with memory/ perceptions manipulating reality or otherwise not being what they seem, I'm beginning to wonder if most of what we saw didn't really happen (at least in the way we think it happened).
I wonder if RTD is treating the guaranteed 2 seasons as a part 1 and part 2 of one larger season without actually calling it that (since viewers reacted negatively when that was done a few years ago). Because it feels really odd for Ruby to say her tearful goodbyes and the Doctor to wordlessly leave, only for them to bring Millie Gibson back next season to presumably wrap up Ruby's search for her "totally normal" parents.
I probably have never disagreed more with Ellie on this entire season of Who… and I absolutely love that fact! Contrary to most folks on the internet I don’t look for critiques or personalities on the internet to parrot my opinion back to me. Some of my favorite moments of Who & Trek Culture are when I go into a video with a completely different perspective and take than I. Often if hearing a different opinion doesn’t change my own view in an intelligent way I at least appreciate seeing things in a way I never would have.
I actually thought the Spoon Woman's child was going to turn out to be Timeless (and therefore the Doctor).
One question i have: the doctor needed that spoon so hard but didnt he have any kind of metal in the tardis???

It's the unrealness of the ending with Ruby's birth-mum that makes me think it might all be an illusion of some kind - a fairy tale ending - and that the real (less happy) truth is yet to come.

I think the biggest issue with the season as a whole is that it was at least 4 episodes too short. If they had 12 episodes to play with, we could have had 3 more adventures to show the Doctor and Ruby bonding, and then have a 3 parter finale, with cliff hangers at the Sutekh reveal and then the death of all UNIT personnel. But as for the spoons, the Doctor hasn't had enough spoons since the 7th Doctor

Is it just me or was Sutek's rebuilding of himself dependant on the Tardis itself? I'm not sure it was well communicated, but he drew strength from it and was completely tied to it, I felt like he couldn't just abandon the Tardis, and even if he could, he didn't want to. It was his prize, he was attached to it psychologically if not metaphysically.
Over fifty years after my birth, and adoption, I met my birth father and managed to connect with some of my siblings. (Alas my birth-mother had passed away.) With my father it was an instant connection, and one of my brothers I have regular communications. Alas some of my siblings are "unsure" about a sudden relative, and I respect that. But immediate bonding does, and did, for me, happen!

For me, one of the biggest issues was the short season. I think 8 episodes for such a massive villain was too short.
If I were doing the finale, I would've made it a three part episode. Keep the first episode the way it was and make the second a kind of Mad Max style journey through the dying Universe with The Doctor and Ruby and Mel visiting all these different planets as they get dusted and really build up that hopelessness until the end with The Doctor deciding he's going to stop running and face Sutekh. And then have the 3rd part be him coming up with the plan to stop Sutekh and then dealing with Ruby's mother.
I just think with such a small season we didn't get enough of a chance to build that bond with Ruby and The Doctor which gave me Dan Lewis flashbacks to The Flux and Power of The Doctor where we didn't get enough time with him either.
Overall Series 14 was better then the Chibnal era but not as good as the OG Russel era or the Moffat era.
The Theory of Mrs Flood being the Rani holds well because not only the "Hiding myself away" line, indicating shes a Time Lord after the doctor says it in releation to regeneration, but dressing as companions, as the Rani once did, dressing as and pretending to be Mel after the 6th Doctor regenerates into the 7th.
Also rain is an anagram of Rani, and rain causes floods, and we know how much RTD loves anagrams, and hiding an anagram behind a layer of abstraction is on brand for RTD2

I think, while the disintegrate even would have been better as a cliffhanger, what we got still had me at the edge of my seat. Due to all the back and forth between will everyone live or not since classic who and 2005, I really can't guess much anymore.
I, personally also dont theorize mid episode. I just let the story drive until I hit the end title sequence.
There is too much of the Doctor defeating these villains so easily is the last two minutes. It took a whole other episode to defeat the Silence. Martha needed a whole year to defeat the Master. They put a leash on this guy and that was it, too easy of a defeat
The Doctor has hardly defended any enemies this season barring the goblins, the snot monster and Sutekh. The rest were defeated by AI dead dad, The Beatles, Ruby, then Rogue
I think there's still more to come with Ruby's story yet. The cloak and time changing, pointing to the road sign. I think Ruby's Mum did notice the Doctor and know who she was. My theory is that the Trickster is involved somehow. I was thinking about it, and while yes Ruby and her Mum are both 100% human, but so was Sarah Jane and Peter Dalton in "The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith". The Trickster set things in motion. I think that could be the case this time too, for reasons and motifs yet to be revealed.

There was no mention of mavity that I saw in the finale.
Also, Ruby's father's surname is Garnet, another gemstone that is red in color.
Finally, as to Mrs. Flood, I like the theory that we're watching a show within a show and Mrs. Flood is the narrator. But a flood is another body of water, so I wonder if there's a River Song or Melody Pond connection....
Rose, Jackie and metacrysis 10 are still dusted, Sutekh put a Susan on that world when the TARDIS landed there, but since they couldn't go back to that dimension, that world couldn't have been un-dusted when they took Sutekh on a walk though the time vortex

I have the feeling that this wasn't the full ending since RTD said himself that Ruby's story isn't complete yet. Especially since there are still some loose ends
I have the feeling they’ll be a disappointing throw away line in some future random episode that ‘wraps up’ the loose ends.

100% agree on the editing suggestion! All in all I’m very happy though. I do hope we get a longer and more Dr. focused season 2.
So for me, I think the “spoon” scene was less about the metal and more about MEMORY. Notice how after the Doctor mentions metal, she “remembers” her child. And when he “fed” the spoon to the screen, which is powered by memories in a Memory Tardis, it gets some power.
I think the “metal” was just a way to trigger sentimentality and thus a memory.
You missed the point with the "Holodeck" scenes. Time was continually changing while they were in there. The appearance of the Ruby Road sign and the light pole were changes in the timeline. What other changes can you spot? I saw others.
The problem is the show can't really respond to any reaction to Series 14 with Series 15 already completed. So either the issues will continue or they will be addressed anyway. I kind of hope that by this time next year people will be making retrospective views and going oh that's why all that happened.
This season has been about history changing (Mavity!) I honestly feel as if the mum was revealed to be normal because they believed they could find her at the end. At the start of the season Devina couldn't even find her because they didn't believe they could.
I'm satisfied with the finale as I think there'll be more to come with the story next season, the changing of reality is definitely RTDs signature overarching plot thread
I just rewatched the "Doctor Drags Sutekh into the Vortex" video and it looks like Kate took Colonel Sexy's hand, not the other way around.
Why is this so hard for people to accept? By the Doctor's own admission, the forces around Ruby and the mystery of her mom made the situation. The moment the he, the TARDIS with Sutekh on its back set things into play by the adventure with the Goblins that moment on Ruby Road became altered with all the forces - perception filter, 73 yards, baby and all. He causes damage to the continuum wherever he goes - we saw that represented in his tomb in Name of the Doctor. He created his own puzzle and paradox. The mother and baby on the other planet? Well, compare Indira Varma and Varada Sethu. We just may have glimpsed the new companion as a baby in her mother's arms. It's a show that has had conflicting stuff happening for 60 years. If you have issues with how it is being run today, I have only three words: John Nathan Turner.
It's kind of interesting that sutekh didn't let go of the tardis for one millimeter. He didn't attack or anything it was all his minions. So have to agree with sean and ellie that he would be way scarier if he had lunged at the doctor or something like that.
He did lunge once but yeah, I think though his power was maintained by the TARDIS

He doesn’t need to move or attack to kill anyone as all beings will face death in time.

They kept mentioning the tardis perception filter but why hasn’t anyone tied that to the mystery of rubys mom it was the tardises trap for sutekh plus it would have been nice to have the tardis have traped him which is why he never left it

I found this finale very unsatisfying with very disappointing pay-offs. It also didn't tie in well with the rest of the season. The whole reunion of Ruby with her birth family was a very Brady Bunch ending. Also, I'm unconvinced that Ruby's mother would have such long manicured nails as a working nurse...

@7:26 As I have said in comments on other videos, all-powerful gods (e.g., god of gods) generally do not "do" anything themselves. The always work through others/minions. For example, the way that Greek gods used the various Greek "heroes" as the tools to do what that wanted done. They didn't do it themselves, but made the heroes to do it.
The episode sits better for me after a few watches, but I agree as it stands it was an anti-climax. That said, RTD's said Ruby's story isn't finished so once season 2 drops we'll be able to look at the bigger picture.

I've never found a problem with Ellie's "Ups and downs" - she tends to give "Ups" and "Downs" that are deserved, and they tend to have the same level of weight to them, when you follow the discussion that goes with them.
The problem comes when every slightly positive item gets an "Up" spammed at the counter, but only major "Downs" get added to the counter.
Maybe, if you recognise that the weighting of the "Ups" given is unbalanced, as you seem to suggest that you recognise, then the answer is to group a handful of the extremely minor items together, in the discussion, and then add only one point to the counter, for that group (or you just mention the positive items, but don't increase the counter, like happens with the minor negative items).
And NEVER do what has been done, and I'm almost quoting here... "Jonathan Frakes - Up Up Up Up Up... just because I can".
Yes, the "Ups and Downs" videos are only a "bit of fun"... but if you aren't going to take the count even slightly seriously, it makes the whole thing pointless, and not fun at all!!
If the Ups and Downs aren't going to be balanced and deserved, then don't bother with them at all, because it means nothing, and is just a waste of your time (and your audience's time).
The biggest problem throughout this series of Doctor Who has been the pacing, and not having enough episodes to do justice to the stories.
More episodes, and splitting some of the stories into two-parters, would have allowed the writers to put more into the development of the plotlines (and include some character development elements), and would have allowed the audience more time to "bond" with the Doctor and Ruby... and appreciate how their relationship had had more time for them to bond, too!
The Finale could have easily been a 3-parter, instead of a strong-ish first part, and a weak, plot-hole ridden, damp squib of a second part.
It's like a firework.... light the blue paper and stand back, waiting for the excitement, but it just fizzles out, making a wet fart noise, instead of being a big bang. The result... don't go back to that firework, and don't buy that type again, in the future (in other words... Bye bye Doctor Who, because people will stop believing the mystery set-ups, and will stop watching).
It is an irony that a modern version of a TV programme that heavily features "Time", gets the timing so wrong.
Wouldn't the Doctor have had something... anything... metal within the Memory Tardis? No? Really, RTD... nothing?
We certainly hope we see a lot more of Bonnie Langford in the UNIT spin-off (if we ever get that).
Did anyone else expect to see East 17 join Mrs Flood on the roof, and break into a musical number... "Stay another day", perhaps?
When you watch the "Tales of the Tardis" version of the "Pyramids of Mars", you see how Doctor Who can be done well.... time for pacing... time for character development and relationship growth... time to breathe, at the times when it is needed, with good action pieces, and suspense, that didn't rely on fabulous CGI, huge budgets, and fake mysteries (or a reset button).

I need to watch the episodes of this season again. I'm thinking that if Sutekh can control others through time and space as their minion, surely something similar could happen with Ruby's birth mother? We don't know because what's shown to us is confusing and incomplete and leaves a bad taste. But I reckon that Sutekh manifesting into the Doctor's reality meant that they also developed some limits of physicality. And those limits are what the doctor exploited.

I just have this feeling that Mrs Flood is Lindy Pepper-Bean. Cosplaying companions aside ... it can't be a further coincidence how similar the actresses are aka very believable that one is the older version of the other. I would imagine that the AI from Dot and Bubble now sees the Dr as the enemy for ending it's scheme and has integrated with Lindy because of her connection with the Dr. They have been on an adventure through time and space trying to track him down which has made Lindy realise the error of her ways (seeing all his good etc) and she is in a battle internally with the AI hence the dark and light moments. Just look at Mrs Flood's stare in Cherry's bedroom and compare it to that of Lindy on the boat looking back at the Dr

What do you guys think of the idea of The Legend of Ruby Sunday (including the bit where UNIT and Kate being turned to sand) being the end of the season? Then Empire of Death would’ve been the Christmas Special with more runtime
With a show doing mystery characters you’re always gonna have people who hate it or love it you can’t please everyone and everyone’s gonna have their own thoughts and hopes for what that character would be so it’s a win loose situation you can’t please everyone
I have very much enjoyed your coverage of this season and found it mostly balanced and fair. It leaned a little into the fanboy but that was just part of the excitement of having a better Doctor Who back on our screens.
There is a LOT of hate for this season on YT but that all has an agenda, which is ad revenue. I used to watch some of their channels but have switched off as they just want to find reasons to attack the show and it has gotten petty.

Bringing Sutek back was a great idea. Pyramids of Mars was one of my favorite episodes from the old show. The execution was TERRIBLE!
