    Hi Tom,
    That's a good demo, glad about the alcohol trick, a little denatured for work, and, later at the end of the day a little alcohol from a good beer for the machinist...

    hello Tom , I am very happy for u share their knowledge and experience with us. My profession is to work with lathe machine . even with my experience I have learned always something new and also here in Brazil do not have the resources that you guys have there . and tool here are very expensive .but there's a lot we can do to oneself . I'm always watching your videos . although I'm a little sad to not understand English .in far as possible put subtitles so that those that came with your channel can understand better. if possible send a hug Abon pro and pro Kilroy much like the videos of them also . a lot of health and peace for you .

      We had a dusting of snow at the 700 meter altitude yesterday. Fear and trembling immediately ensued. As I get older winters seem more difficult. However, we just got our certificate of occupancy on our building and will be working indoors in a heated workshop this winter!
      Tom, although I do not (yet?) post videos of what I am doing and feel a bit guilty that you guys are doing all the work from which I benefit, I want you to know that your videos are a source of both information and encouragement to me and surely to many, many others. Your having created a sense of community by reaching out in many ways to others has created a dynamic space for belonging. The way you guys spontaneously decide to build something for one another is a surprising and refreshing development steering the tool fetish away from the materialistic addiction of "to have for having's sake" to gestures of "see what I can do for you."
      OK, I am prone to be verbose, but wanted to let you know I do appreciate your considerable efforts.
      Many thanks,
      jim

    Hey Tom,
    Thanks for the great video! Now you can play Frizbie around the shop with your new toy. :-) So where were you when things started shaking at 3:20 this morning? You are closer to American Canyon that I am. I was still up, reading and thinking I should go to bed. There was a little bump and a second later, a rolling feeling like the the Big One in '89! The quake went on for a good 8 or so seconds! I fired up my laptop and starting bopping around the 'net to see what was going on. The epicenter was about 10 miles deep between Napa and American Canyon. The initial reading was 6.0 later upgraded to 6.1 by the USGS. It woke up the Mrs. as well as neighbors. That's life in Earthquake Country!
    Have a good one . . . and stay quake-free!

    Hi Tom,
    I use double sided tape for all sorts of things. I've got some real thin stuff at work, but no branding on it.
    It's more convenient most of the time than some of the old time methods, like shellac, beeswax, pitch, or even newspaper and paste. The latter is perfect for turning split casting patterns though.

    When you did the final facing cut, did you rely on the DRO or on your eye and feel when making contact with the disk. This is great video indeed. That giant machine making such precise cuts is fascinating to watch.

    • @oxtoolco
      @oxtoolco  10 років тому

      Hey Ken,
      Once I have a good calibration on the DRO I generally follow it. I had no good way to measure the washer directly so I had to rely on my pickup, tool calibration, and offset for the tape thickness. Got pretty close.

    Nicely done Tom. I like your lathe jig, and that tape proved it's worth. Do you know what grade the brass is? Looks kinda like aluminum bronze with the stingy chips.

      I think you are right. I thought it was 360 but the color change and the chips look bronze. Scrap yard special. Who knows at $10/lb. The DRO is great. I'd buy another in a heartbeat if I got a machine I wanted one on.

    Tom, Enjoyed the video. Nice job as always.
    I use 3M's VHB (Very High Bond) in the same manor that you do, I also use acetone to remove, but makes a gummy mess, I'll have to try alcohol next time. The DRO is really cool!

    • @chemech
      @chemech 10 років тому

      I think that 3M uses an alcohol - ethyl or iso-propyl - as the solvent in their factories - lower organic vapor in their exhausted air, less of a fire hazard...
      Some of their spray adhesives turn gummy after application, because the glue oxidizes a bit - I recall getting gummy messes even using alcohol wipes to remove Spray Bond from electronics stuff back when.

    • @oxtoolco
      @oxtoolco  10 років тому +1

      Hey Herb,
      The VHB is different because it has no backing. Its basically pure goo essence. It does stick like the dickens. Never been able to measure it very confidently.
      Cheers,
      Tom

    • @k5at
      @k5at 10 років тому

      You are right, its a little spongy. I've cut disks by putting a center drill to locate the center, then I use a dead center to line it up and push it into the tape, then I replace the dead center with a pressure plate to push the part against the backing plate.

      Hey Chuck,
      I really like it so far. My only complaint is the multiple tool function is a little clumsy having to access a sub menu to get it going. So, just to clarify...I seem to recall this being the question forming in my head on Pt. 1. You achieved concentricety with the turning of the second, or larger O.D. after mounting the I.D. to the center flange? I just recall thinking that the belt sanded O.D. wasn't concentric to the I.D when you created it and am wondering if I am correct in following how you achieved the final relationship between the tow holes?
    Horrible way to ask the question I know, but it has been bugging me since you turned the 1st ID.
    Thanks for any clarity you can shine on that...Aloha, Chuck.

    • @oxtoolco
      @oxtoolco  10 років тому

      Hey Chuck,
      You are correct. This part did not have any real fussy relationship between the ID and OD. In the second setup I had access to the od so I went ahead ad turned it nice and spiffy.

    What about a small diameter wire pulled through the softened tape, like a cheese cutter?

    • @chemech
      @chemech 10 років тому

      That tends to leave tape residue on *both* surfaces, which you still need to remove with a solvent and a scraper.
      Wood turners use a lot of the thicker double-stick tape, and are a bit more concerned about swelling the grain or staining their wood when they take a piece off of a faceplate, so they do things like you describe.

    • @oxtoolco
      @oxtoolco  10 років тому +1

      Hi Nathan,
      For more fragile parts I have used a Mylar film to kind of slice through the tape layer to free a delicate part. It makes more of a mess of the tape but is sometimes the only way to free a part held by this tape.

    Cool video, good to see chips flying. One nit, from the spelling I would think that a wabble drive is pronouced in the style of Elmer Fudd talking about a wraskally wabbit. It can be a bit messy, leaving an oily film. Acetone works, but the fumes are a bit strong - ramp that up for lacquer thinner, which is not a good thing for skin contact, so wear nitrile gloves and work with lots of fresh air...
      90% iso-propyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) works too - the 70% stuff not so well, too much water... but, it will still remove Sharpie ink... I keep some in the shop because it's cheap and fairly low on the hazard scale.
      I usually have Goo-Gone - kerosene and citrus oil - in the shop... cuts the think crud, like old duct tape glue, leaves a thin residue of oil.
      Denatured alcohol is also sold as shellac thinner - ethanol, but with a trace of poison in it, so don't drink it!
      Most tape glues are alcohol based / soluble, so you are trying to get the best dissolution by using a solvent similar to what they used in the factory... The older, oxidized stuff may need a little persuasion.

      chemech Eucalyptus oil is pretty good for goo & varnish (hardened goo) - Cineole is a cyclic ether and it grows on trees.

      I myself use Naphtha, it cleans everything if you let it soak a bit. Tho word of warning, do not touch it with bare hands or use it in an un-ventilated environment.
      If you follow those 2 simple rules and of course dispose of it properly you will never get dirty finger nails again.
      The hardest test i've given to this thing is a friend's 1975 BMW 318 gearbox. The thing had been "refurbished" by its previous owner.
      No idea what the stuff inside was but not even soaking it in diesel did it. Left it 2 days and all we did after that was to remove the gunk that was basically metal bits and other crud of the sort left at the bottom of the case. All the surfaces were clean and ready to work on. Oh and you need to shake it.

    Ox, for aluminum use Kennametal CCMT insert (size and nr of your choice here) LF chipbreaker in K68 grade. There is no better insert for aluminum on manual lathes.

      Hi Malt,
      Shoot me a picture of one. You have my interest if its really a CCMT.
      Cheers,
      Tom

      Not much to see, uncoated carbide with a simple chipbreaker but I have found it perfect for low cutting speeds and feeds in aluminum. I run it wet but a mist or brushed on oil would probably work just fine. I like CCMT for its flexibility, I use them in my OD and ID tools in 3/8 and 1/4 ic sizes with a .016 chipbreaker.

      Just to continue, it eliminates the stringy chip you were getting with one of those high polished high rake jobs. I only find those work to break the chip if you push them hard.

      465maltbie Good point. The high positives are free cutting but with light finishing cuts make longer chips. I will have to see about getting some of the Kennametals you mention. They don't give their stuff away for sure.
      Cheers,
      Tom

    have you tried carpet tape? that stuff would hold Jesus to the cross

    • @oxtoolco
      @oxtoolco  10 років тому +1

      Well if carpet tape holds Jesus to the cross then this stuff holds the cross to the mountain. This is industrial duty tape. Not to be confused with hardware store grade double back tape. It stands up to flood coolant for pretty long time. long enough to get the job done in many cases.
      Cheers,
      Tom
