Hey brother love this format you did a great review and did this knife Justice! It is an awesome all-around knife I absolutely love it and you did an outstanding job my young brother!!
I been using mine for camping for 4+ yrs and I love it. It has belly, can't snap the tip. Sharpens easy on ceramic rod. 👍 Glad to see your knife gets used! Good review
Thank you so much for pronouncing Tanto correctly. Drives me up a wall. A knife pet peeve. Ordered this knife a little while ago, don't have it yet, and this came up in my feed. Enjoyed the video.
SK5 is a high grade 1085. You seem to have discovered what I did over 30 years ago when I bought my first Recon Tanto in Carbon V and welted leather sheath. The Recon Tanto is one of my favorite woods knives.
@@isaacs_knives_and_knowledge it would have been nice if they had kept the saber grind like on my old Carbon V but I haven't noticed any issues with the hollow grind on the SK5 version.
Thanks, Matt. I agree it does seem to make a a fine bushcraft knife. Why don't you think we see more "bushcraft people" using them? This is my first experience with the tanto blade.
@@isaacs_knives_and_knowledge My honest answer as to why I think most “bushcrafters” don’t use a tanto is because it is not “traditional” looking and because it is meant as a fighting blade. Many bushcrafters are overly anal about their “image” in the woods I find. This is just my opinion.
This is exactly what i like about cold steel products, they are always made to be actualy used. And indeed cold steel and Cris reeve make the best tanto's.
Accidentally poked myself with that thing, blood everywhere and man did that ever hurt. Nothing the Emergency room couldn’t stitch up. Good solid knife.
Yes great knife, I have the leatherneck tanto and it's pretty much my food prep knife, tanto tips are so good for cutting ribs, garlic everything...its such an awesome knife blade crazy tough and good in the hands...great vid my friend
My Recon Tanto rides in my truck right by my side. Absolutely excellent blade. Have the SRK and the SRK compact too which are all just great blades for the price they cost. Good review sir.
My problem with the CS tantos in outdoors jobs is the slight curve that the blades have and, lately, the hollow grinds. Older Recons from Japan used to be flat ground, which I always prefer.
I thought that too initially. The curve should effect batoning adversely by causing excess torque when you hit the point end. I was completely wrong! The Recon is a better batoning knife than the SRK, period. There no great upward torque or vibrations during batoning as a matter of fact the longer blade and the curve help the Recon to readjust the blade as the grip end goes up with each successive strike. The long curve blade also make it easier to scrape fatwood when you plant the tip into a stable piece of wood as you scrape. I believe the Recon is a better outdoors knife than the SRK!
@@isaacs_knives_and_knowledge I had the same problem, but the solution is simple. Go to WALMART and buy yourself a camera phone tripod. It's $20 and really portable.
@@songokuo5131 Better can be a relative term. The San Mai is nice stuff as it is carbon steel overlayed with stainless making it a very good knife. It's also twice as expensive. The SK5 is a tough carbon steel that is easy to sharpen and much less expensive
A knife is a knife; those recon tantos would hold up in any survival situation unless you’re abusing it or doing stupid shit with it. Common sense is your best tool in the woods 👍🏼
Phil. I have to vehemently disagree with your comment! I initially hated all Tantos because it looked too mall ninja-ish, even though the Coldsteel has the best tanto design of them all. But I purchased the recon and took a chance 5 years ago because I loved the SRK so much and the SK5 was cheap. To my surprise, The RTanto is a better outdoors knife than my 3V/VG10/ SK5 SRK! It is better than my Fallkniven A1X/S1X! Used it exclusively on multiple trips to Maine from Florida fishing, camping, and hiking, starting fires, processing wood or shelter building. I love the RTanto even though Coldsteel doesn't make a 3V for it any longer. I have both the SK5 and the VG10 and both holds their edge exceptionally well and is so very easy to touch it off to hair popping sharpness! I now have all of the higher end 3V Coldsteel tanto in the Magnum, Master, 3 Code 4s, and two Recons tanto in SK5 and VG10. It may not have been designed with the outdoors in mind, but it turned out to be one, and an awesome one at that! Swinging this knife feels so natural and I love batoning wedges of sticks to feed my rocket stove with! Give it a try bro, I think it will win you over!!!
@@samthai818I just got my sk 5 recon today and I don't doubt it'll be a good bush knife, I think I'll be putting my firebox or Kelly kettle in my car so I can go test this out after work tomorrow.
The Recon Tanto is a great chopper. You have be cognizant of what you are chopping. Trying to chop a 1.5" limb that is unsupported is like trying to screw with a limp dick. Any knife will have issues with chopping a springy small diameter limb 5+ feet from its base. The RTanto is a better outdoors knife than my 3V/VG10/ SK5 SRK! It is better than my Fallkniven A1X/S1X! A good tanto makes an excellent bushcraft knife, especially if it has a bit of an arc to the edge like Cold Steels. Great demo brother!!

If you could only keep one which would it be? I’m on the fence about which to order first.
@@frankiethefrog1752 srk full size. The srk compact does better at edc though. But I would definitely go with the full size.

You called or a recon scout alot just saying
Who is he talking to? Is he reading from a teleprompter?
No it’s not a good woods knife. The American Tanto is a fighting knife. It’s meant for combat.
True of course, but as you can see it can be used for camp tasks but not the ideal knife design for the job
