My grandma thought The Beatles released Lucy In The Sky With Diamomds for her cat that’s name was Lucy who had passed away the day sgt peppers came out
Just saw Roger Waters last Saturday in Portland Oregon. What a wonderful show. Roger is now 79 years old. Thanks for your video I always enjoyed your sight
You deserve SOO much more views man, I really really love and appreciate the effort you put into the presentation. Thanks for sharing your passion with us, I hope nothing but the best for your channel.
Pink Floyd addressed this quasi-payola scam directly on their "Dark Side of the Moon" album with the song "MONEY." They extended their commentary with the lyrics they composed and played in the album "Animals." As you noted, MTV broke the back of the scam, and the internet nuked it.
You should do more "Crazy but True Music History" !! I would suggest a video on Morris Levy, who is a very interesting character. Something that also ties in with him is the Tiger Lily record label, and tax scam record labels, and also the band Stonewall which relates to it all. Lastly, I think doing a video on the loophole "legal" bootleg releases in the 1980's in Europe (Beatles especially) that led to some interesting imports here in America. Hell, a video or two about vinyl bootlegs in general would probably be very interesting (you could find them in flea markets in the 80s) and how it really started with Bob Dylan.
Honestly. This may be one of the most informative videos you have ever done. This was just unbelievable. I shared it with Jon Carin ( key board player for Pink Floyd, David Gilmour and Roger waters.
In 1978 the ILR ( independent commercial local radio ) station along the coast from me , Portsmouths’ Radio Victory’s’ singles chart was supposedly based on sales from just 4 Record Shops in the city . For instance they would play diverse artists or songs such as White Punks On Dope by The Tubes , Roadrunner by Johnathan Richmond and Solsbury Hill by Peter Gabriel - which weren’t being played by BBC Radio 1 during daytime. Nowadays in the so called free market no such diversity exists although Solsbury Hill is played a million times more than when it peaked at No27 in 1978 ! Thanks for your work 👍🏴❤️
Eric, Vinyl the Tv show, touched on payola, the guy who got killed was the DJ who was the record kingmaker at that time. That was one of the best shows I had seen in a long time, In 2016 it was too big and costly for it to work out. I was gutted when it was pulled. The cast, the writers, director, the music, the stage sets, the streets, it had it all, what a shame it couldn't continue running. At the time, it looked like it was too expensive for Tv to handle.
It's funny, I saw the music industry collapse from within starting in the late 90's and by around 2010 it was was done. You would think the new internet DIY recording and promotion would have encouraged the labels to offer better deals and more opportunity for new artists but instead it got even worse.
Had Roger been made aware of this happening at the time, he probably would have proceeded to write a song about it- along the same lines as ‘ Have a Cigar’ - would’ve been cool to hear him skewer THAT aspect of the music industry as well. But, maybe they did know about it- we may never know...
That transition to making the artists pay more for promotion in addition to studio time is something artists still complain about. They see so little return in licensing to the internet media outfits that some are turning to their own promotions and exiting the new traditional music biz.
I'm still waiting for that Dark Side Of The Moon video you were talking about. I got to say I love The Wall and Animals videos you made and I would also love to see one for the best album ever recorded. Keep up the good work!!!
It’s quite bizarre how after the ‘DIY revolution’ of Punk during the final third of the 1970s , it was a “ Prog Dinosaur “ whom had the last British No1 Single of the decade 🏴❤️
Very cool video. I had no idea about any of this, and my father worked in the business during that time. He wasn't with any label so it might have gotten past him back then.
I loved this video. I'll have to check your channel, I'm not even a big Wall fan, just a Floyd fan. I'm glad YT sent this my way, and it's interesting that YT picked it, without me having watched much Floyd, compared to other bands and things.
This is such a lazy argument and I get so tired of seeing it. There is a ton of diverse and exciting music that is being made all the time and is more accessible now than ever before. Impactful art is never going to be served on a golden platter for you. Seek it out, and you'll find it. For a small example, just listen to Derek Trucks, Tame Impala, or Anderson .Paak and your "all sounds the same" just washes away instantly. Hope you are well m8, it's not all doom and gloom! Not to mention, musical instrument sales have been at an all time high!
Duuudee. This was a great fricken episode. Lots of cool info. I know some of this stuff but never really deep dove. I would love some more of this stuff from you Eric. More so than just bands and album reviews, I def think you could carve prob an even better niche talking about a lot of this old school stuff that gets forgotten. From radio to tape and tv, the way the industries have changed through different eras. Multiple ties to the mafia. There's just so many interesting stories out there. Music is such an important thing in society that it reaches things like the government, or the mafia.and in today's day and age, you aren't called crazy for saying that, as the proof is out here for us to see, whereas 30 years ago if you said the music industry was run in part by the mafia, and a bunch of subsidiaries that might as well count as the mafia, ppl would Call ya crazy
Excellent and informative. I believe payola still exists, it may be that "other" people and companies are paid. There is a website that I won't mention that held the whole indie market hostage for a good while in the oo'z and into the early 2010s, however, thankfully, their influence has drastically gone away. Again thank-you for a great short documentary.
Last night I attended a local show that featured a band named US and Floyd!! It was a good show for what it was but it paled in comparison to seeing PF in 87 and I think 92
I grew up outside of Philadelphia in the 60s, where we had two Top 40 stations, WFIL and WIBG. The only difference between the two and within the two was the character of the individual DJs. Otherwise, they all played the exact same music. That gave us reason for pause, but we never suspected that payola had never left the business. Later on, you heard of certain DJs pushing a newcomer, e.g. Bruce Springsteen in the Philly market, but that was on FM radio where I suspect the DJs had more latitude to play what they wanted.
I thought a radio station payed the record label or artist money every time they played a song. Maybe that is in Europe. I looked it up and it does say artists get royalties every time their music gets played.
It was the thumbnail. It says "when pink floyd #### hostage." Your mind fills in the blanks. UA-cam has a lot of clickbait done like that. Blame the thumbnail.
jeeez i mean i knew rule 4,080 but this stuff sounds downright sinister. like refusing to play the single till they get paid is bad enough but the 'network' of guys with that much power to do whatever they want?? theres plenty of abuse that happened right in broad daylight, imagine what these guys were doing behind closed doors? actually, dont imagine, for the sake of your own mental health ☠️
You'd think KLOS or KMET would have known they released a new album and played it anyway. Also: home taping (from the radio or album) was illegal? We ALL did it!
I've heard of payola before but I never knew it was carried out to this extent in the record industry. Imagine keeping the number one band off the radio until _'The Network"_ got paid.
It's a toss up between Vinyl Rewind or Rael NYC, who have the best old school music shows on the interwebs, fact. It is astounding how they can give us a new and fresh insight into the art and artists, considering we have seen everything a thousand times over, they can make us feel like we are watching something new, that is a skill in its self.
Someone like britiny Spears or other modern pop single people would care but someone like pink floyd who never care about singles, this whole thing doesn't even appear on their radar. Heck, pink floyd music is meant to be hears as an album. Not as a single.
Hello! I really like Pink Floyd and i would really like to know more about The Dark Side Of The Moon. I saw you made a video on it, but it was the least serious reiew i've ever seen. Can you remake it?
This may be a good spot to spin-off onto Tom Petty and his fights with the record companies/music biz, his house burning down due to Arson, and the Last DJ album. Maybe u could dig up some stuff that has otherwise gotten ignored
Definitely hunt down the book “Hit Men: Power Brokers and Fast Money Inside the Music Business” for even more shenanigans in the music industry including the players in this story.
Nicely done! I simply can’t listen to radio anymore because they all play the same songs ad infinitum. I don’t go to concerts anymore because I’m old enough not to care but mostly because of Ticketmaster. People complain about there being no good music anymore. I would argue that there is, but that’s not gonna pay the industry executives. Long live Indie!
I started making music in the middle 80s. Wrote 1000s of things ...got my music banned right here ...and have STORED IT for the last three years And won't go back until these demons are ridden from. The planet...which I hear is coming .NOW
Heh, looks like someone’s been reading ‘Hit Men: Power Brokers and Fast Money Inside the Music Business’ by Fredric Bannen! Still, the book’s a superb expose on ‘The Network’ and highly recommended for anyone interested. Apparently Network member and former Vietnam veteran Joe Isgro kept a collection of photos of all the _dead Vietcong_ he’d shot. Lovely.
If I pay a radio station to play my ad, that's legal, but if I pay it to play my record, that's "payola" and it's illegal...but why tho? I don't see the difference. The ad and the record are both meant to drive sales of a product, right?
Brilliant idea to put lawyers (or accountants) in charge of creative business. Today every 5 seconds fart gets censored on YT, even if labels would benefit from free ads. It ruined pop music.

That transition into Pink Floyd at 7:20 was superb
Chef's kiss
Perfecto 🤌🏻
I always assumed they released "The Wall" in honor of my birth. Very respectful of them.
It was a special day
All in all it's just another candle on the cake
well aren't you narcissistic, sir?
My grandma thought The Beatles released Lucy In The Sky With Diamomds for her cat that’s name was Lucy who had passed away the day sgt peppers came out
Haha you're old
Just saw Roger Waters last Saturday in Portland Oregon. What a wonderful show. Roger is now 79 years old. Thanks for your video I always enjoyed your sight
You deserve SOO much more views man, I really really love and appreciate the effort you put into the presentation. Thanks for sharing your passion with us, I hope nothing but the best for your channel.
Whatever efforts you put into researching and making this video were fully worth it dude, that was absolutely riviting to watch. Thanks.

Then there's also two tracks from Wish You Were Here (Welcome to the Machine and Have a Cigar).

Jon Carin is fantastic! He does an admirable job with Roger, David, and Pink Floyd.
Most underrated youtube channel around
This is a fantastic video! I never knew payola kept going so strong after it was ‘outlawed’.
the problem is record companies because they steal. nothing wrong with payola
Apparently it still happens nowadays, just with other rewards that aren’t money (e.g. free tickets, merch)
Love the rog glass
I love that Roger Waters candle you have on the coffee table, truly sticks to the Pink Floyd theme you’ve got going on!
bahahaha! 🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿

Hit Men is a crazy book. And quite the eye opener of how much goes on that people dont know about
I can’t believe I never heard about any of this before! Kudos for the amazing video and story!

I'd vaguely heard the basics of this story before but never in as much detail as expressed here.
Cheers for the information.
Cool video.
Great work, I appreciate your channel
Great story, well examined!
Great video as always! This must be the best UA-cam channel I've ever come across.
I’m hoping to hear your thoughts on the 2018 remix of Animals!
I enjoyed it but didn’t hear many differences from the mix
I'm still waiting for that Dark Side Of The Moon video you were talking about. I got to say I love The Wall and Animals videos you made and I would also love to see one for the best album ever recorded. Keep up the good work!!!
Great show!
It’s quite bizarre how after the ‘DIY revolution’ of Punk during the final third of the 1970s , it was a “ Prog Dinosaur “ whom had the last British No1 Single of the decade 🏴❤️
Very informative video. Enjoyed it hugely. Obviously appreciate your regular reviews but I think more content like this would be a great idea.
Cheers for the video mate 😎 👌
Saw Roger last night, it was insane
Where?
Brilliant video, would also love to read the 'Hitman' book, fascinating story.
Great video. I stumbled across this channel recently. Love the content and had to sub.
Dude the roger head cup 🗿🗿🗿
Kudos on the video. Great insight. This tale has Martin Scorsese motion picture written all over it. Am surprised no ones made a film about this
Glad to have a Pink Floyd video on the release of the Animals remix!
Yeah buddy, my SACD copy will be here tomorrow!
Very well done. Great info!
Great video. Good work.
Very cool video. I had no idea about any of this, and my father worked in the business during that time. He wasn't with any label so it might have gotten past him back then.

Reminds me of a joke popular in radio during the 80s --- " ...and the winner of the WXXX all expenses paid Hawaii vacation is..... My coke dealer!!!"
Great video! Love the insight on the record companies and the radio stations at the time, just crazy stuff
Definitely an interesting story but still really cool to hear, keep up the great work man
Me in 1990s: "Internet is going to make things so diverse!"
Me in 2020s, listening to the radio: "crap, it all sounds the same"
The gold is still out there but it's now unfiltered so you have to search harder.
Get off the radio and you’ll find you were right
This is such a lazy argument and I get so tired of seeing it. There is a ton of diverse and exciting music that is being made all the time and is more accessible now than ever before. The internet did make things more diverse though... turn off Top 40 radio and explore the wild yonder.
Awesome video!
Had no idea about that. Super interesting video
I always think of the Dead Kennedy's story where they sang My Payola at the awards show.
Nice work, cheers!
Great video story! Thanks. I had heard about payola being exposed in the 50’s.

Interesting video - thank you.
man got a Roger cup
And just when I thought I learned everything the band went through. The music industry is so cut-throat
It was far more cutthroat in the early days of rock and roll. So many artists got absolutely screwed in the 50's, 60's, and 70's.
Excellent and informative. I believe payola still exists, it may be that "other" people and companies are paid. Pink Floyd The Epitome Of Music
💎☮️👊
Very informative
This would make a fantastic movie.
Great video. Take a read of Walter Yetnikov's book... Howl at the Moon. Crazy stuff.
This is a really great video. I love our historical videos.

I see you have the🗿 Roger 🗿mug with you
I thought a radio station payed the record label or artist money every time they played a song. Maybe that is in Europe. I looked it up and it does say artists get royalties every time their music gets played.
You're correct. Even UA-cam video makers must either pay the artist, get demonetized and removed, or go with "for free" music.
Did anyone else read the title too fast and think it said "That time Pink Floyd were held hostage"
It was the thumbnail. It says "when pink floyd #### hostage." Your mind fills in the blanks. UA-cam has a lot of clickbait done like that. Blame the thumbnail.

A God damn well knew this was a Payola video when it began
You'd think KLOS or KMET would have known they released a new album and played it anyway.

Fan of your videos, wondering if you’re going to do a review of the Pink Floyd Animals Remix?
It's a toss up between Vinyl Rewind or Rael NYC, who have the best old school music shows on the interwebs, fact.
It is astounding how they can give us a new and fresh insight into the art and artists, considering we have seen everything a thousand times over, they can make us feel like we are watching something new, that is a skill in its self.
For a second I misread and thought the title was "That Time When Pink Floyd was Held Hostage" and was somewhat confused.
That's what I read too. That's mostly why I clicked on this video 😂
You should get in touch with Rodger
Someone like britiny Spears or other modern pop single people would care but someone like pink floyd who never care about singles, this whole thing doesn't even appear on their radar. Heck, pink floyd music is meant to be hears as an album. Not as a single.

Ha, ha I read about this in the book the Hit Men.
Music industry is one filthy swamp.
Sweet !!!!
Hit Men is the new Mad Men!
i totally agree re vinyl the show
5:50 George Clinton!
I'd love to see you do a George Clinton interview.
Same! It would be beautiful.
Nice profile btw
Love that you have a Roger Waters' drink cup on your table
welcome my son, welcome, to the machine.
I read Hit Men couple years, dirty business
Hey VR. Did you listen to Animals (2018 Remix)???
Is this going to be a Payola Scandal video?
I guess I’m just too old. I don’t really get your VPN explanation and why it’s worth the $$$
Definitely hunt down the book “Hit Men: Power Brokers and Fast Money Inside the Music Business”
for even more shenanigans in the music industry including the players in this story.
