I have personally taken my vehicles to dealerships with so called certified technicians with random complaints of my own that seem to always comeback as "unable to replicate issue/complaint" you sir are a fantastic technician. I had a Chevy LUV (Light Utility Vehicle), made by Isuzu, bought new in 1972, first year imported. Drove it across the country from LA to Rochester and back, nary a problem. Eventually, it swallowed a couple of screws from the carb at about 60,000 miles. So I pulled the engine and trans, made some mounts and put a 283 small block in it, complete with narrowed posi rear end, stock wheel bolt pattern and a Muncie 4-speed. Drove it another 50+K miles, and sold it for just about what I paid for it new ($2700 out the door). It was a total sleeper from the outside...fun times. There was one in Garland Tx where I grew up that had a 455 olds with the transaxle mounted in the bed. Thing was fast once he got moving. Tire smoke for days.
The worst thing is that a cooling fan assembly can misbehave even without apparent noise or vibration issues. The one on my car still managed to keep the engine cool, but failed to keep the AC condenser in front of the radiator cool, making the AC weak in hot sunny days and the AC compressor noisy. It turned out the radiator fan motor had seriously worn bearings and didn't spin fast enough. As i said before no strange noises, only less air flowing around the engine bay with the hood open. New fan+motor+shroud assembly in place and all AC issues are now gone. This is on a 73k miles 18 year old city car.
I used to start at the power supply and work my way to thru fuses/breakers/relays. I've since learned to start at load device and work back towards power supply. Saves mucho time.
It was a sound that was out of the ordinary for the customer. Definitely worth taking the time to diagnose. Good thing they had a pressure switch backup and temp sensor. If one fan quits the other kicks in. Good diagnosis Eric
Chevy cruze. Hands down the one car ive singlehandedly done more water pumps, tstats, and water outlet valves on for people in one year than any other vehicle ive done in the last 5 years hahaha. They keep me in business thats for sure
Using a halogen headlight bulb as a test-light is ingenious -- a high enough load that it puts a good test on the wiring and the relay. Way more accurate than an LED test-light for testing high-load situations. Really cool!

I had a fan issue on one of these a few years ago (I'm a dealer tech) and I did the EXACT same thing you did when I saw the schematic. Went right for the fan and checked for power. Had it on all speeds and sure enough the fan was bad. Cheers

Eric, I think this is a somewhat common problem and people just choose to ignore it. I work at Walmart changing oil and tires and as you may imagine, we get a lot of cruzes! They're everywhere. I have noticed the fans being louder than normal, and seeming like they cycle too often on quite a few of them.

Having a tool to drive the outputs like that is awesome (I want one!). For us cheap DIY mortals, you can just pull the relays and feed +12v to the fan terminal in each case. I just had a bad relay, but If it was the resistor pack I was already scheming a way to cut out the resistors and replace.. Probably can't do that on a customer car though..:)

Just had this on wife's 01 Mustang. 2 speed single OEM fan would only turn on low and would not come on at all with air conditioner. There's a huge resistor that plugs in line with the main power wire to the fan motor. Jumped out that resistor, which then only allows high speed, and the 130k mile fan is still strong and AC is freezing cold again. Since replaced the resistor and it's back to normal.
Man all these videos popping up on such a nice sunday. Between taryl fixes all, pine hollow, and South main auto, makes it hard to get my grillin done.
definitely cant go old school. use to be if fan kicked on at all meant it was good, but with different commands & relays that's no longer the case. that scan tool & your troubleshooting is awesome. cool vid
Right now my 2013 Chevrolet Cruze's engine fan is blowing like crazy even tho I'm parked and the AC is not on! It even says AC stopped because high motor temp. but the motor is not even hot!
Great video on how to keep it simple. Have came across this twice on the Encores with the same LUV engine. Only started happening when the ambient temps warmed up. Had a similar thought process when seeing three relays too!

ah the famous cruze lol I own a 2012 and I have put at least 6 thermostats on it to fix the issue with cold temp and ac off due to high temp it has 185k miles on it
I’m have a 2016 Cruze. Thermostat and water pump replace fan replaced twice and a new engine. 76000 miles bought it with 16,000 its 3 years old. Still having fan and a/c issues.
Omg ur not giving me good vibes with this 2012 I bout my daughter!! I’ve put a thermostat and water pump in it, previous owner did the same 2 years ago, I’ve replaced the coolant holding tank cuz it sprang a leak, currently sitting cuz it randomly looses all coolant and overheats and I don’t know where the coolant is going. Also think the heater core is now leaking due to overheating too many times!! Fan needs replaced since it only has high speed but I don’t think I’m going to spend anymore money on this car
@@RonGeary mine had a water pump, 6 thermostats, coolant tank and needed a radiator fan because only low speed work which cause the ac to not get cold as it should but the car got totaled at 199k miles. Really only problems that happened all the time was the thermostats going out almost every 25k miles not lying lol, had spark plugs and new coil pack and battery but thats all that was done to it at 199k miles still had original belt on it never had wheel bearings go out or ball joints or tie rods still had factory steering and wheel bearings had the struts replaced around 130k
@@RonGeary if you replaced the water pump and you bleed the coolant with the radiator cap off and bleeding it at the bleed screw on the radiator and replaced the thermostat brand new then you may have a head gasket issue from the over heating some many times which would cause it to over heat easy
Fast paced is good, this is exactly how I diagnose something like this as a flat rate tech. Easy component to reach like that, go straight to it and figure out what isn't there (Power/ground etc...), usually before I even bother opening a fuse box or checking/swapping a relay out. I like to work back from the part, because it's the most efficient way to get the job done.
Great videos good sir, funny seeing this tonight. Was working on a freightliner m2 today, saw wires at fan hub looking rubbed through, reached in and grabbed the wires, (key on, engine off)engine turned on and beat up my left hand, no major injury just fairly stiff hand. Foreman looked it over and got engine components to click, turned key to the on position, he moved wires around again and truck started right up. Cut some zip ties and tape around harness and it will no longer start but what a shock that was
Hi in the UK this car is the Insignia. We have changed a few of these fans, only on petrol engines though. One cooked the head gasket on the car after getting stuck in traffic on a summers day. The car was fixed and checked went out with the fans working. It came back as it overheated again once again checked everything working as it should. Came back a month later overheating.... the fan would kick in as it should , 2nd time ok 3rd time ok 4th time ...no..... the resistor pack was seriously HOT . A new fan asssembley was fitted at the cost of an arm and a leg this was GM only all the aftermarket ones seemed to be for diesel variants (which don't go wrong). Problem solved ,the resistor pack had corrosion where the wiring went in at the back and the wires had almost corroded out. To all BMW owners this happens on 1,3 and 5 Series BM's ,check by giving the wires the wiggle test they usually fall out and there's your problem......oh the choice is yours scrap yard or 2nd mortgage..
Had a mid 70’s LUV (Isuzu P’UP) 4x4. Actually a pretty good little truck, but road salt just ate ‘em up here in Indiana. Somewhere, I still have an original fender badge off of it. A few years later I had an early 80’s LUV diesel two wheel drive. Had to swap the rear frame for one from an early Datsun truck that believe it or not, actually still had a solid frame. Built a flat bed for it and drove the crap out of that thing. That Isuzu Diesel engine ran great and got fantastic highway mileage. Kinda wish I still had it......
Thanks a lot. . It's very simple for people to maintain their own vehicles. They just don't want to. It really is a simple plug in place system today. And it looks more complicated than it really is. There's a lot of things of covers that people think they can't touch it ever again. And it's really just cosmetics. That's a great video. Good work.

My Dad owned a yellow Chevy Luv back in the early '90s. It didn't have an ignition switch, so they had to hot wire it every single time. He bought it for $500 and used it for about 5 years. He eventually sold it to someone who claimed he was going to drive it to El Salvador lol. Overall, it was a very well built.
Not sure if you're aware boss man but this is a chevy Cruze. I actually have not ever heard of a luv but i did some research and that mf looks badass bro. Depends what year lol
i have a 2012 chevy cruze.heater fan is intermittent. until you hit a big pothole then it works until you turn the key off. then it just replays like that everyday. no a/c either but engine fans works . been trying to diagnose. seems like a bad relay not a loose connection. very hard to get a wiring diagram from chevy AKA bring it to the shop so we can fix the problem we already know what it is. any ideas?

Funny that Chevy still refer to the LUV as an identification for some things. My best buddy in the early 90's had a '78 Chevy Luv that he referred to as the twuck for it was an under-powered, not quite gutless wonder, cause when not loaded down, it was sprightly, but add in a bunch of 2x4's and other items into the bed and a trailer, it was under-powered, and yes, it had the 4 Spd manual in it, no AC or power anything and no insulation, or much of it anyway but it got him through 3, maybe 4 years of good use though before being in humid Kansas summers without AC forced him to replace it with a fully optioned 1985 VW Jetta GLI 4 door with working AC to get through the rest of his time there in the mid 90's while in graduate school. He actually bought the truck here locally in Western Washington at the time. He's back out here with his family and now drives a '94 Toyota SR5 Extended cab pickup with the V6 and working AC that once belonged to one of his brothers.
Really enjoy your electrical diagnosis videos. I'm trying my best to get familiar with reading and understanding wiring diagrams. Would love to see a video on the bare basics of reading them for others who have no teachers or are DIY.
I work in software, and it drives me nuts when my peers want to know exactly how something works when they're digging into it. Does it do what it's supposed to? Yeah? Great! Nah? OK, what's the simplest test we can devise to isolate where the problem is - and ignore the rest? You're an inspiration!
I had this very same problem on my Chevy Cruze just recently. The fan would come on and would shut off a second or two later. The shop told me that my fan was bad since it wasn't responding to the first relay, but was responding to relays two and three. They replaced the fan and all is well now.
Still using a resistor to let a fan spin slower is an antique way of doing things imho. I'm sure that in the future (if its not already used now on more complicated cars) it'll be done with a pwm controller or similar using fets or so. Gets way less hot. Less heat means less wear and also less strain on alternator and battery, which is both good on longevity and gas mileage.
I'm having a similar issue were only the high speed turns on every 10 seconds or so, I followed your video and got a new fan only to find out the connector harness (wiring) coming from the car is burnt through one side and it looks like the they connected one wire to the fan socket previously so I had to order a new wiring harness it's crazy that they didn't want to go the trouble and replacing that no wonder the car was confused!

I remember Y2K, we installed a wine cellar system for a guy who was having a party that night, he'd also had installed a huge diesel generator just in case there was a power cut.
At my dads shop the tire balancer has a huge sticker on it that says "Y2K Compliant." I remember the local feed store here must have sold a 1000 generators hahaha
Worked for a public utility that tested everything to be y2k compliant. Didn’t find anything that would fail when advanced to +2000 dates. On New Year’s Eve we had crews on standby all over the system waiting for Armageddon. Pretty anticlimactic when nothing happened anywhere.
@@craig28c actually you're both right. They are made in Ohio, except for the hatchback which are made in Mexico. In 2017 GM also started manufacturing them in south Korea but those were sold overseas.
I had a '79 Chevy LUV (Lime Green) when I was in college. Only had it for about a month or so. I only wanted it because it was a manual. When I turned the motor off it would leak about an ounce of oil. Never did find where the oil leak was at. Sold it to the first sucker that came along. It was fun to drive but I wasn't a fan of how the hood opened like on a corvette. 😁
Yep...Low and medium speeds go out on the fans a lot..Im on my 3rd fan because of it only has high speed left and sounds like a jet taking off when it comes on....So does anyone know the fix to keep the lower speeds from stopping working...
@@ivanbarbosa3132 You have to replace the whole fan...Two of the fans the switch went out in a couple months...The last one I bought has last several years now..
Had a Chevrolet a couple of years ago and when the outside temp would go to 90 plus and the A/C went on the second fan would not go on and cool the engine down and when I took it back to the dealer they could find any problems with it and I took it back to them at least 4 times and GM refused to say there was an issue and I got rid of the car and I have sworn off American made cars from that time on.

Had a mid 70’s LUV (Isuzu P’UP) 4x4. Actually a pretty good little truck, but road salt just ate ‘em up here in Indiana. Somewhere, I still have an original fender badge off of it. A few years later I had an early 80’s LUV diesel two wheel drive. Had to swap the rear frame for one from an early Datsun truck that believe it or not, actually still had a solid frame. Built a flat bed for it and drove the crap out of that thing. That Isuzu Diesel engine ran great and got fantastic highway mileage. Kinda wish I still had it......

Thanks a lot. . It's very simple for people to maintain their own vehicles. They just don't want to. It really is a simple plug in place system today. And it looks more complicated than it really is. There's a lot of things of covers that people think they can't touch it ever again. And it's really just cosmetics. That's a great video. Good work.

My Dad owned a yellow Chevy Luv back in the early '90s. It didn't have an ignition switch, so they had to hot wire it every single time. He bought it for $500 and used it for about 5 years. He eventually sold it to someone who claimed he was going to drive it to El Salvador lol. Overall, it was a very well built.

i have a 2012 chevy cruze.heater fan is intermittent. until you hit a big pothole then it works until you turn the key off. then it just replays like that everyday. no a/c either but engine fans works . been trying to diagnose. seems like a bad relay not a loose connection. very hard to get a wiring diagram from chevy AKA bring it to the shop so we can fix the problem we already know what it is. any ideas?

Funny that Chevy still refer to the LUV as an identification for some things. My best buddy in the early 90's had a '78 Chevy Luv that he referred to as the twuck for it was an under-powered, not quite gutless wonder, cause when not loaded down, it was sprightly, but add in a bunch of 2x4's and other items into the bed and a trailer, it was under-powered, and yes, it had the 4 Spd manual in it, no AC or power anything and no insulation, or much of it anyway but it got him through 3, maybe 4 years of good use though before being in humid Kansas summers without AC forced him to replace it with a fully optioned 1985 VW Jetta GLI 4 door with working AC to get through the rest of his time there in the mid 90's while in graduate school. He actually bought the truck here locally in Western Washington at the time. He's back out here with his family and now drives a '94 Toyota SR5 Extended cab pickup with the V6 and working AC that once belonged to one of his brothers.
Most smaller cars seem to use the resistor method, but a lot more are coming with full PWM modules with some pretty nasty (high-amp/flow) fans.
Really enjoy your electrical diagnosis videos. I'm trying my best to get familiar with reading and understanding wiring diagrams. Would love to see a video on the bare basics of reading them for others who have no teachers or are DIY.

I work in software, and it drives me nuts when my peers want to know exactly how something works when they're digging into it. Does it do what it's supposed to? Yeah? Great! Nah? OK, what's the simplest test we can devise to isolate where the problem is - and ignore the rest? You're an inspiration!

I had this very same problem on my Chevy Cruze just recently. The fan would come on and would shut off a second or two later. The shop told me that my fan was bad since it wasn't responding to the first relay, but was responding to relays two and three. They replaced the fan and all is well now.
Did you have a check engine light on with it?
Still using a resistor to let a fan spin slower is an antique way of doing things imho.
I'm sure that in the future (if its not already used now on more complicated cars) it'll be done with a pwm controller or similar using fets or so. Gets way less hot.
Less heat means less wear and also less strain on alternator and battery, which is both good on longevity and gas mileage.

Resistors die in the AC fan motors and the motor fan now too. Hopefully we start making them in the US and with some quality again.
I'm having a similar issue were only the high speed turns on every 10 seconds or so, I followed your video and got a new fan only to find out the connector harness (wiring) coming from the car is burnt through one side and it looks like the they connected one wire to the fan socket previously so I had to order a new wiring harness it's crazy that they didn't want to go the trouble and replacing that no wonder the car was confused!

Great video and yes I do remember the Chevy LUV (L ight U tility V ehicle) pick up.They were an ISUZU pickup sold through chevy from I believe 1972 to 1980 some thing.
I remember Y2K, we installed a wine cellar system for a guy who was having a party that night, he'd also had installed a huge diesel generator just in case there was a power cut.
At my dads shop the tire balancer has a huge sticker on it that says "Y2K Compliant." I remember the local feed store here must have sold a 1000 generators hahaha
Worked for a public utility that tested everything to be y2k compliant. Didn’t find anything that would fail when advanced to +2000 dates. On New Year’s Eve we had crews on standby all over the system waiting for Armageddon. Pretty anticlimactic when nothing happened anywhere.

@@craig28c actually you're both right. They are made in Ohio, except for the hatchback which are made in Mexico. In 2017 GM also started manufacturing them in south Korea but those were sold overseas.
I had a '79 Chevy LUV (Lime Green) when I was in college. Only had it for about a month or so. I only wanted it because it was a manual. When I turned the motor off it would leak about an ounce of oil. Never did find where the oil leak was at. Sold it to the first sucker that came along. It was fun to drive but I wasn't a fan of how the hood opened like on a corvette. 😁

The whole time I was watching I was like, it doesn’t work on low speed! It only works on high! Very common & the connector usually melts too.
Yep...Low and medium speeds go out on the fans a lot..Im on my 3rd fan because of it only has high speed left and sounds like a jet taking off when it comes on....So does anyone know the fix to keep the lower speeds from stopping working...

Had a Chevrolet a couple of years ago and when the outside temp would go to 90 plus and the A/C went on the second fan would not go on and cool the engine down and when I took it back to the dealer they could find any problems with it and I took it back to them at least 4 times and GM refused to say there was an issue and I got rid of the car and I have sworn off American made cars from that time on.
