1978 Firebird Aftermarket Gauges (Oil, Boost, Tach) Install (Ep.9)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 6 жов 2024
- We want to keep an eye on the boost from the supercharger, engine RPM, and engine oil pressure, but the existing gauges aren't the most trustworthy. So lets round up some aftermarket gauges and install them so that we can do exactly that! We will mount the gauges in the dash and to the steering column, wire everything up, and we will finally have some readouts providing information!

I'm glad i found this channel, the quality gets better with every video
Bigbooster126 There are channels that have more subscribers with less quality. Good job!
In recent years I've went full on ls swap but I still love watching the old stuff being put together. It takes me back to the 90s and early 00s when I would help my dad build old cars.
All the interesting fun of a car project without the fake added drama of a tv show. Love it. The bloopers at the ends of the more recent videos are great.
I have a 1980 Camaro that I am rebuilding currently and learning a lot on the way. I love this series, keep up the good work!
Dude u really know cars to watch u fabricate a lot of what was need for the firebird and solve problem after problem it was very inspirational,u should open a shop, and u make me wanna buy a project car.
Im not even a chevy guy but your firebird is bad ass
lol, soldering in your lap? You are a brave man.
Brastius jeans hold up to heat good so it’s hard to get burned.
@@yakitoly7461 welll i have have a big drop of that solder hit my jeans and it stuck to me did not burn to bad
There's a Trans Am for sale near me that I'm thinking of getting. These videos are inspirational!
Did you end up buying it?
Great video, but c'mon you gotta show us those new gauges in operation... especially the boost gauge!
Yeah, filming of the last four episodes was rushed because of time restraints, so I didn't get a chance to film them working. I will make sure to show that in the future! Not sure yet how to film the boost gauge in action, probably just have to have a passenger hold a camera up to it and find an open, empty stretch of road.
The one person who disliked it is just made at how good you are with cars
It's funny how you have such a thing for lubricants, sealers, and threadlocker
I just started watching your videos and I love every single one of them. You've got a great sense of humor and you're explanation of everything you're doing is great. Also, there's nothing wrong with being cheap. Some of the best things i've ever bought were cheap, but I don't tell anyone that I just let them think that I spent a lot of money on it. LOL. Keep up the great work.
Looks better than I expected!
Awesome work as usual!! Cheers from southern maryland.
i was wondering for the longest time what two gauges i was missing for my 81' firebird and watching this made me realize it was a a/c car i've been wondering for years and and looking at other peoples cars that where non a/c cars and i had completely forgot that you need a vent for air conditioning just shows how you can other look something so small
They're not cheap, but Firebirdcentral sells tachs for your car. The earlier 8K tach can be adapted to work in later cars like yours. However, I'd do that dash pad first... :-D
Haha yeah, the interior needs a lot of work, but the visual stuff is still pretty far down the to-do list
I know you mounted the gauges but you can mount a set of 3 pre made together pieces in the pocket below the radio. It's nice hide and not hard to see even tho it's away from the cluster
You have the gauges. Nevermind a set. Making a stainless bracket with holes cut out will work the same.
Happy to see a new video
Silcone the back side of the gauges around the holes on back dash 👍 needed to no were the ta water gauge went informative thanks
Loving the new set of videos
Great work but I'm sad that I didn't get to see the gauges actually working.

Ok I know this is old vid but they do make a nice gauge cluster
I need to replace my speedometer and add a oil gauge on my 1976 Chevrolet Camaro.
Ironically I’m just about to do the gauges in my old car
There are instructions online for how to correct GM factory tachs for about $1 in Radio Shack parts...
Yep, my understanding is they have a resistor chip that fails and jumping traces with resistors can correct it. I'm sure it has been mentioned in one of these videos, but maybe not this one. Just faster and easier to throw in the aftermarket tach (that I already know is accurate) than messing with the factory one for now
@@FuzzyDiceProjects - I just love the big factory analog tachs... and having them work properly... no tacked on stuff...
4:40 Soldering in your leg > any workbench
How much boost does that setup make?
Awesome stuff. Question though: why not fix the factory tach?
There are ways to correct the calibration on any gauge, but specific information is difficult to find and I have not done enough research to attempt it, not to mention that professional gauge work is quite expensive. Easier to just throw an aftermarket one in there, at least for the time being.
Maybe replace all the gauges at some point? I know that’s not in line with your DIY make it work mentality lol but it’d be nice to have a matched set
Great Video, can you tell me what part number LEDs you used?
Unfortunately I can't, I don't seem to have the order info for those anymore. I wouldn't recommend them anyway, the ones I have are very blue and it's not a great look/is unpleasant on the eyes at night. I would try to find ones with better reviews, maybe pay a bit more, but for reference the bulbs I bought look just like these: www.ebay.com/itm/262644798204
How did you get that spedomitor cable off... I can't seem to do it
Always use mechanical gauges in your baby. Good video.
look oem good job
video bost gaud working ?
Be careful not to put your fingers on the wideband O2 sensor.
Really? I have never heard that before, and have a hard time believing they could be that sensitive/delicate and be designed to be installed in a vehicle's exhaust system. Instructions mention the usual contaminants (oil, coolant, excessive carbon) but nothing about not touching the sensor. I'd think you would need very, very oily skin to mess the sensor up just by touching the outside of it.
That's what I was told and actually saw this on some vids. But I never researched it. In any case, it doesn't cost any more to avoid putting your fingers on it. I guess like a halogen bulb.
Why not fix the original gauges?
There are ways to correct the calibration on any tach, but specific information is difficult to find and I have not done enough research to attempt it, not to mention that professional gauge work is quite expensive. Easier to just throw an aftermarket one in there, at least for the time being. The old oil pressure gauge seems to have a mechanical problem, if I opened it up (a bit scary since the gauge cluster plastic is so brittle) I might be able to fix that one, but an aftermarket gauge will a full readout is more valuable than the one on the dash anyway.
Pretty early eh
Until you started talking, I thought I was watching a AvE video lol
good ol' empire of dirt
But the Firebird has already a tachometer. Why'd you install a new one?
As mentioned in the video, it is way out of calibration. Reads like 2k RPM at 4k. There are ways to correct this but I have not done enough research to attempt it and professional gauge work is quite expensive. Easier to just throw an aftermarket one in there, at least for the time being.
Okay. Got it.
80s tribute build mullets and Marlboro cigarettes 🚬 🚭 👌 👏
You did all of that when you could’ve just fixed the wiring and gauges to see if they actually worked? Lol.
The gauges were wired, the needles moved, but the wiring wasn't the problem. Age has worn the mechanical parts most likely, so they need to be taken apart and calibrated. I don't have the equipment or knowledge or time to do that at the moment. Plus an aftermarket gauge will a full readout like the oil pressure gauge is more valuable than the one on the dash, and of course there never was a vacuum/boost gauge.
Fuzzy Dice Projects fair enough. I’m glad you got it back together.
Afr gauge,
Car looks like shit you shoulda left with the cragers and that blower looks ugly and there's better way to make power
