Damn you got to love the Seaview,so cool and to bad they can't in this day of age build a sub like the Seaview

Most US Subs have larger forward torpedo rooms than aft. because that's where most of a subs bite is located ! I actually joined the Navy to be a Torpedo man ( thanks Kowalski) , and I was so disappointed to find out that our Subs didn't have huge Herculite Bow windows . As it turned out my Torpedoman school got dropped and I wound up in the Helicopter Pipeline any way ,

There IS a German invention that is like transparent aluminum and it can withstand small arms fire.
It is used to protect banks and cashier windows. and other high profile places where money is kept.

Apple One (the diving bell) used to sit up on the Dive Center in San Diego. That diving store was closed and Apple One was moved to a place in Oregon. The owner would not tell me where. I was able to see it and go inside in 2003 before it was moved.

My dad introduced me to Irwin Allen's shows. I love them. One thing that got me was in the 1st season in VttBotS we have them smoking all over the sub. The main thing that shocked me though was that this was a privately owned nuclear sub that carried 16 (roughly) ICBMs. Good ol' Nelson Institute for Marine Research.

The Seaview was a naval reserve vessel subject to the orders of the Pentagon and the President.
This was brought up in the original movie and the television series as well.
However, Nelson could and did act independently if higher authority could not be contacted in an emergency.
I saw the movie when it originally was shown in the theaters and loved it though parts of it were cheesy, particularly the rubber octopus.

This was my favorite show, growing up in the 60s. On thing that always got me, though. The control room was really far forward, attached to observation room, which of course, had the periscope. But the conning tower was set further back...

Thanks for sharing this. I guess this show and cast with all of it's legendary shine will be part of, not just a memory for a TV Series from the 1960's growing up, but my life and devotion to it. Something special always stays with you for life even fantasy sci-fi which isn't too far removed from reality anymore. Only exception maybe being the creatures, but who knows what's ahead in that respect too, right?

Hugh Marlowe has been vastly undersung over the decades. He was a very stalwart performer. I believe that his best role was in Twelve O'clock High (1949); very heroic and ultimately sympathetic in his portrayal of Lt. Col. Ben Gates. Yes, vastly undersung.

I loved Voyage and the crew and particularly Basehart.
The first season was very suspenseful with spies and threats to the country and even attempt to kill the President with Jimmy Doohan as one of his top advisors.
Then for who knows why Irwin Allen brought on mummies, leprechauns and who knows what else and ruined the show turning it into an underwater Lost In Space with all its stupidity and silliness.
I stopped watching that show and the worst was Dr. Smith as a human carrot.
Great episode and its sad that the diving bell is now on the roof of a dive shop left to rust.
Someone should buy it, restore it and donate it to the Science Fiction museum so people could see it.
I wish there really were a Seaview.
One error is that although Nelson self funded the Seaview I seem to recall that it was actually a US Navy Reserve ship subject to Presidential orders and someone at the Pentagon would oversee the ship and could give it directives so it was not entirely an independent entity that Nelson could do as he pleased with it.
But this is from memory. I have all the DVDs of the show and wish they would come out in blu ray
Someone who did a model video says the design of the propulsion units has a major flaw and they corrected it in their model.
In my mind, I can imagine there being a NIMH based in Santa Barbara today and NOT subject to the California Coastal Commission regulations.
I've driven down to the Santa Barbara coastal area several times and could imagine the Seaview base as I looked out over the Pacific and wondered just where it would be in our world today.
Did anyone ever think about how they would say the show was set in the 1970s but its not OUR timeline but an alternate on with certain enemy nations being like Communist dictatorships trying to kill the President or destroy the Seaview ?
Finally, I used to live in San Francisco and someone on line published a picture of the Seaview being in the lagoon at Aquatic Park which is really cool and another 2 where the Seaview is seen in San Franciscoo Bay and is also seen going under the Golden Gate Bridge & I have them in a file on my Mac and use them as desktop pictures.
i was 12 when the show was originally aired and it remains one of my all time favorite shows just below my favorite of that time The Man From U.N.C.L.E.
What wonders we have seen in the last 59 years.
    I am 71 now.
Who knows what new and exciting inventions and upgrades we would have seen coming from the mind of Harriman Nelson in the Seaview universe.
I wish someone would re-do the series and update it for today and am surprised no one ever has thought of it.
    Closing channel L.

Mr Kylec1701, thank you so much for posting this video preserving the memory of the USRN Seaview. This show populated my dreams (and some of my nightmares) as a Baby Boomer "maturing" in the sixties. This show meant a lot to me so much that years later I served on the USS Kamehameha SSBN-642! "Voyage to the bottom of the sea" brings me back to a time of naivety and innocence in our (American) history, a time when TV programming fostered family and societal values. Thank you so much for bringing back these memories, Ciao L (a Veteran)

Thank you very much. We don't get a lot of that these days and we appreciate it.
I said I thank you and first responders as well.
Our military, police and first responders keep us safe and free.
Without them we would have total chaos and anarchy.

Well I don't know what happened to it over the years or where its at now. But about 30yrs. ago when I was still in Uncle Sam's Canoe club . I had the opportunity to go inside Apple One Because it used to sit atop the Aqua Tec Dive Center , On Crosby St. in San Diego, Ca. and it was in need of some serious repair back then even . I hope its still in one piece , It should be on display at 20 Century Fox !!

Mr. Ritch, just read your comment, sorry for the misunderstanding about the airing of Voyage. I thought I made it clear in the piece that this was the local syndication time slot here in my home town. I am a 52 year old man but I was still a little young to have seen it on network television. Our CBS affiliate was one of the first stations to syndicate several properties of Sci Fi programming. Yes, Voyage aired on Saturday mornings. It was a great time to be a kid.

At 18:57 the discussion begins regarding the another of Mr. Allen's inconsistencies of how the Seaview fired torpedoes from the forward part of the ship. In Fred Barr's Technical Manual, the Seaview is equipped with two automated bow torpedo tubes. Thus, we don't really need to go to such lengths as to formulate how the torpedoes were fired out of the forward part of the ship. The show was great but the inconsistencies gradually increased over the years.
