It is very unfortunate that NOT ENOUGH WAS OR IS BEING DONE TOO HONOR THE CREATOR OF THIS SHOW "SOUL" THE GREAT MR ELLIS HAZLIP. His show debuted on channel 13 PBS in 1968 until 73or 74 and played a very important part in the BLACK ARTS AND POLITICAL MOVEMENT OF THAT TIME.
There is no cooler image than when our folks raise the instruments to play them!

I thought I watched all the PBS programs as a kid from Sesame Street, ZOOM, English comedies =-Benny Hill, Monty Python, etc. but I have never seen Soul! TV Show. Never knew it existed. Incredible artists and speakers from that period. Can't wait to see the documentary. Blessings Mr. Hazlip=INNOVATOR!

When I was younger , I never got why my dad and his brothers were so into creative jazz musicians , and scouted everywhere for old records. Now in my 50's , I got it ! THIS is my kind of creative artists. THIS is real innovation. Absolutely fantastic ! What a time for doing your own thing for the JCB. Alongside the other geniuses around 1970. Just look at the top 100 albums 1965-1975. Really takes your breath away.

And real humorous, too. He was kinda the soulbro answer to what Frank Zappa was doing at the time. Love 'em both so much!

Wow, what entertainment packed into only 24 minutes! That first song Just Begun must be like a break dancer national anthem. Jimmy then provides funk, rnb soul, comedy, sings, plays the sax, and ends with a Hendrix song. What a band.

Early life and career
Castor was born on January 23, 1940, Early in his career he was a member of the famous doo-wop group The Teenagers. Later he created Jimmy and the Juniors.[2] In late 1966 he released "Hey Leroy, Your Mama's Callin' You". As leader of The Jimmy Castor Bunch in the 1970s, and also as a solo artist, he released several successful albums and singles. The group reached the peak of their commercial success in 1972 with the release of their album, It's Just Begun, which featured two hit singles: the title track and "Troglodyte (Cave Man)", which was a large hit in the US, peaking at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100. The track stayed in the chart for 14 weeks and was a million seller by June 30, 1972, and received a gold disc award from the RIAA.[1] Castor released "It's Just Begun" in 1972. Africa Bambaataa said that "It's Just Begun" was very popular at South Bronx block party in 1970s. Later popular songs included "Bertha Butt Boogie", "Potential", "King Kong" and "A Groove Will Make You Move" in 1975 and 1976.
The Castor band included keyboardist/trumpeter Gerry Thomas, bassist Doug Gibson, guitarist Harry Jensen, conga player Lenny Fridle, Jr., and drummer Bobby Manigault.[1] Thomas, who also recorded with the Fatback Band, left in the 1980s to exclusively record with them.
Many of the group's tunes have been heavily sampled in films and in hip-hop. In particular, the saxophone hook and groove from "It's Just Begun" and the spoken word intro and groove from "Troglodyte (Cave Man)" (namely, "What we're gonna do right here is go back...") have been sampled extensively. Industrial hip hop group Tackhead covered the song "Just Begun" for the digital release of their album For the Love of Money.[3]

The man was truly "The Everything Man" but he still remains "Unsung" to this day! Thanks for posting his performance during the first part of the January 13, 1973 episode of the ground-breaking TV show "Soul!" (The Spinners performed on the remainder of the program, which is also on UA-cam). He was in a class by himself!

Lord, I used to love this show in the late 1960s-early 70s. Growing up in a little bitty North Carolina town, it was unusual to see black people on TV. Ellis was wonderful.

The greatest sax man on the planet, incredible musician, songwriter/band leader. Jimmy also subbed in for Frankie Lymon, when Frankie would fail to show up for gigs. It was my greatest pleasure to see Jimmy Castor perform with his band at the Apollo back in the 1970's and early 1980's. Jimmy always gave a stellar performance. He had the ability to enthrall the audience because he could play so many instruments. He was a classically trained musician and attended Music and Art High School in NYC.

This show pre dated Soul Train by some years. Soul Train wasn’t on the same level as SOUL. Mr.Ellis Hazlip was a TRUE INNOVATOR IN BLACK CULTURE.
SOUL! was on PBS. It was about letting America see artists perform live on TV, often for the first time. It was totally different from Soul Train. It wasn't about dancing. It was about live performance.

I believe it's a RMI Electric Piano..They were popular back in the day until the Fender Rhodes began to dominate the market and became the legend that it is now.
