I have an old 039. I found it in a dumpster a few years ago. It didn't have a bar or chain. I brought it home and checked it out. Found out that the coil wire had heated up and got brittle to where it wouldn't get any fire. I put a new coil on it and new carb and a bar and chain. It's a cutting moching 👍. Put about 60 dollars into it. Love it.
I have an 039 and I was told the max bar length I could run would be 20 inch anything above that I'll loose cutting power. But this video proves it can cut. Awesome
At work I use MS 362 C M, provided that the chain is sharp this saw is doing the same, without any modifcation. There is something to admire. I am a profesional lumberjack in Poland.
The problem with this world is there are too many critics, to each his own, let the man cut and shut your mouth. These people would complain if God came down and healed all the sick, and they would say, what the hell took you so long. Love my Stihl, and thanks for sharing, and I couldn't wait until morning for that wonderful sound.
I have had a 391 fo a while now I still run a 20" bar and mine will not bog down and I can fell a 40" tree witch is more than enough great saw with that being said I do have a limb saw witch is a ms 180 I do recommend to saws for a home owner with 20 Acres + I have 40 and it's a real upkeep great video
i used my poulan for 3 years. no problems. bought a stihl 391 to cut up a bunch of 24 to 36inch junipers. what a difference. the stihl's almost eliminate all the vibration you are used to feeling from the poulan.
Thanks, I guess I'll start doing it your way after 30 years.... unless maybe I was forcing the tree to jump the stump and lay flat on the ground to avoid unsafe or convoluted bucking conditions. Also when using a dutchman in your undercut, leaving to much holding wood can cause setbacks or barber chairs and I won't have any of that.
@jonesbrent85 - These dawgs are on a stock side cover so they might look extra big. If they were on an oversize cover they'd be more in prespective. One thing for sure they're never in the way and engage everything i stick with them. They do reduce the effective cutting length by about 1 1/2 inches but I run a 28" bar so thats not a factor either..........timmmmber.
@mait2733 - Exactly! The chain on any bar should be tensioned so that when you pull up on the cutter in the center of the bar the driver should just barely clear the guide rail. Then tune your saw for it. Anything less will lead to throwing a chain at the least and filing bent drivers or an ugly trip to the E.R.
I believe they're stihl part # 1128 ..might be a slightly misaligned with stock clutch cover, but line up perfect with the over-sized cover.. aftermarket saves big on that clutch cover, BUT...Stihl factory parts feel way better :)
CORRECTION: the ones i put on the 039 (1127 series saws) are - Stihl part #1122 inside and outside dawgs that fit the 044 / 440! ..the 1128's are on my 460. Hope that clears things up some :)
The wood was dirty and there was a rock that thru a spark around cut six or so. The sparks at 12 is from cutting out and re-engaging the log from the side which isn't the norm but since the chain was goodntite, thought I'd finish that last one. The chisel bit chain is so sharp (hungery) it'll pull itself into the wood to the point of RPM loss. Remember I'm using a saw with a max bar length of 20" to pull a 28" bar thru some heavy hardwood.... happy cuttin'
@stihl460bertha - This is an 039 with 28" bar turning 13,275 rpms and cuttin' big hardwood fast. Super-tuning involves: precision muffler mod, carb mod, intake mod, oiler mod and carb re-tune. Gets the maximum amount of torque, power and cutting speed out of the saw as well as reducing overall operating temps. It allows the engine operate more effectively and actually last longer. All my saws get the super-tuned mod. I'll post one of the MS361 Shredder soon.
Chaps were "broke in" by Dads cuttin' partner in the early 80's and passed from dad to me as laws were changed to require their use. Long bars de-rail easily and chaps are essential when operating any chainsaw with a bar over 20". Let the chips fly!!
@lluwd - Good comment... 'preciate cha. I own a 361 as well but usually choose my 039 for felling the big ones. Cause it's got snort (longer stroke) and rpm, where as the 361 can get bound up if it loses it high rev's and leave you in a pinch.
i love that saw!!, i have a ms 391 and compared to my old 056 super...its like wow...the old one does have more snort down low..but its heavy as hell...you know, my 391 is the smoothest cutting and easy to handle saw ive ever owned...very little vibration! nice vid bro!
No, as my goal is to get the most out out of my saws with average bench tools and help others do the same... to improve performance, efficiency, reliability and longevity. You're gonna like your "new" saw... did you go with oversize jug
its the OEM jug, my saw builder has tried many different brand aftermarket jugs and they dont last when modified. had one that lasted 2hrs. so he only does OEM and moddifies those.the metal and the coating inside the cylinder he says it better quality and lasts.
Nothing wrong with this cut. Its always a judgement call on each individual tree, but in the case of "pulling" a tree in one direction its fine to cut through the hinge as he did. Wind and the tree's natural lean is something to consider when applying this method and it isn't always recommended, but it was completely acceptable in this situation. Notice the wedge is HUGELY important.
Oh, I understand that the standing tree was something other than hickory. I was curious about the chunk that you were cutting on after the chainsaw tuneup. Dry hickory would be a good test, as it's a good hardwood when cured. I have an 039 that I plan on doing your tuneup tips with. I have a 25" bar that it lugs down when cutting, but it turns an 18" bar no issues.
Any 1127 stihl, again you got me. I own 5 stihls and have no clue what 1127 means. I have an 066 and an MS660 that's on the same formate as the 066, I mean, identical, it was the first MS660 and my 066 was the last series of them. Do you have modified muffler and tuning info for the MS660 and 066?
@DIESELMAN8V92 - As for chain and angles. I only run Stihl Oilomatic chain # 33RSLF 3/8 x .050 in. So that's, Rapid Super "L" Full skip. These are then hand filed with a six sided chisel bit file at three intersecting 45 degree angles that create a 10 degree tooth angle (when viewed from top) and a perfect "L" shaped cutter. Then the rakers get taken down .028 in as measured from top of cutter. Then I add the custom chip deflector unless you like pockets and mouth fulls of Fallers change. Thanks
I'm usually cutting on steep ground and big trees... I like my toes right where they are... And the bar length affords a little less bending and safety concerns while bucking from the uphill side.... thanks
Depends on the bar size. I normally run a 28 on it but have a 32 and the stock 25 that the saw came with. The 28 has a full chisel and the 32 has a semi chisel skip. Same chain I run on the 460 with the 25. Been looking at going .404 with the 25" tho
If that plastic cased Stihl 039 homeowner saw, even muffler modded and as finely precision tuned as possible, is out cutting your Stihl MS661 on any given day, I would loading that power saw up in my truck and making a B line for the dealer you bought it from buddy! My brother in law has a MS461 and an MS661 and they run nearly identical for the most part even with one being "mechanicly tune-able" (461) with high and low jets on carb and the 661 having M tronic on it. Read around the net and you will find the same thing I am telling you here. And Im sorry but if that little pro saw wanna be 039 is keeping up with either of those saws something isnt right. Not bashing on the dudes saw in video,it cuts surprisingly well for what it is dont get me wrong. Hell I own a 290 myself and theyre great saws and have their own place, but a pro saw setting or everyday felling isnt one of them. Thats why I have my Stihl MS660 or my Stihl 036 Pro and I leave the homeowner/Farmboss saws at home, where they belong! On another note, and a question for the guy in video, how are you keeping up with the oil pump output demand that a 28" bar and chain requires to stay lubed and not burn up both the barn and chain on an 039? I know I run a 25" ES bar on my 036 Pro with mild porting on the cylinder and fresh Caber rings and rebuild and it does a great job but even with it being a Pro saw and having the adjustable oil pump, I have to keep the bar and chain wet every now and then by pouring oil on it by hand, so please inform me of how an 039 is keeping up? Not sure I see the bar and chain lasting that long with an under powered oil pump output...
I might do the same mods to mine when I get it. I'm curious how it will go cutting red box down here in Australia. Very hard wood and a known chain wrecker
..DO IT, you'll appreciate the improvement :) and be a known wood wrecker! As for chain; I would run full skip, square cutter filed with 7/32 round file. *Skip moves chips better, Square cuts more efficient, Round stays sharp longer in hard stuff and is fast easy filing with no gullet to maintain..
Have you had any luck with the new muffler on the ms391? I just bought one and am now wanting to do the mod and tune the carb. Thanks for sharing the video!
Been working with that. Two opitions: expand the factory port for moderate gain to keep spark arrestor intact, or make new port and install after market S.A. which requires welding. My goal is to Mod. the saw with basic tools so most could do it themselves. So I'm working with opition one and shooting for biggest gain possible. Will post up soon, thanks for the inquiry.
1127's are a step below your 066's, and they (066) have different mufflers based on year, but all can be modified and.... yes we can get you hooked up.
Maybe he needed to keep his house warm? Do YOU have a heater? Maybe the tree was diseased? Your comment inspired me to go cut down a tree for you!! Just because of you. It was an oak.
yeah nah, not struggling a bit.. a sharp chain and tuned rakers will always pull rpm's down, (stump-snort: the ability to keep cutting under extreme load) ..that's why porting the muffler and opening up the H to a richer setting is so important. She pulls a 32" just as well..
Great "Skill Man" nice video. Quick question, Saw teeth, are they carbide, cobalt or high speed steel? Other, like bi-metal? Thanks for the video , Your really talented!
Stihl designs their bars with oiler holes in both the top and bottom rail. So I rotate the bar every service to keep the rails from wearing unevenly and reduce the formation of "burrs"... If the paint was worn off would it still be upside down? :)
I turned the oiler all the way up and opened the oiler port a little. I recommend just turning the oiler up first as opening the port can get a little messy. Run a 'high tack' bar oil to keep the oil in the bar and chain at high RPMs and it should get the job done. The oil port in the bar may be tiny and restictive, newer bars are that way, a little drill bit goes a long ways... open oiler first and test, if good run it.
@jonesbrent85 - Yes, good eye. These are stihl part #1122/01. They fit 044's and 060's. They bolt right onto the 039 and for a 361 the inner dawg has to be modified a little at the bottom. Note that they don't line up perfectly (neither will the wood you're cuttin' so who gives a.....), so to install the chain roller/catcher you'll have to re-drill the mounting hole on the inside dawg for both saws as well. I can get these and Mod. them along with roller for intrested parties.....just P/M me
Right on... stoked to hear that! Be sure to upgrade to a floating rim sprocket, that'll free it up even more. Those stock spur sprockets suck up power and eat drivers when you throw a chain and you can run less chain tension that way :) ...Timmmberr....
Love it.
..that's a true success story!! A little tinkering and excellent cutting saw.. manned-up!!
I have an 039 and I was told the max bar length I could run would be 20 inch anything above that I'll loose cutting power. But this video proves it can cut. Awesome

Stihl : the best. Not the first tree you've felled. Similar to the 45 I used dropping hardwoods in the Upper Peninsula back in the 80's. cheers.

Nice runnin saw! Especially for an ol 039 clamshell!!
Thanks :) ..and yeah the 039 tunes up nicely with the 49mm piston, the 391 not so much :/
I'm new to this stuff just starting with a poulan 16" 32cc .......Stihl looks the way to go! :)
i used my poulan for 3 years. no problems. bought a stihl 391 to cut up a bunch of 24 to 36inch junipers. what a difference. the stihl's almost eliminate all the vibration you are used to feeling from the poulan.
as a chainsaw mechanic i must to say your sharpening skills are very very good...very sharp, good video... sory for my bad english
I just seen a Mcculloch BP 399T Engine get posted on eBay, One of the rarest engines ever made!!
Wow, look at that pretty heartwood. That would have made some really nice lumber or a nice big mantle beam.
@1moonbuggy you did a very nice job on the modds for that saw keep up the good work
Thanks, I guess I'll start doing it your way after 30 years.... unless maybe I was forcing the tree to jump the stump and lay flat on the ground to avoid unsafe or convoluted bucking conditions. I like the way the small pieces of wood are thrown out. I imagine "BLOOD"
Have you tried running a 8 tooth 3/8 sprocket with that 28 " bar . Do you think a muffler modded 390 would be able to pull it.
Randy Eicas - I haven't tried it... I don't think it'd pull it with a long bar, I'd save that for the 440 or bigger :)
@stihl460bertha - This is an 039 with 28" bar turning 13,275 rpms and cuttin' big hardwood fast. Super-tuning involves: precision muffler mod, carb mod, intake mod, oiler mod and carb re-tune. Looked good except that you kept on cutting through the hinge as it fell instead of getting away from it. Really nice saw.

So what exactly makes a super tune and what's a modified muffler all about? Any details would be interesting and helpful.
The best saw
Stihl & dolmar very perfect👍👍
any port? milling? or timing work? I got an ms 310 I dropped off to a buddy to.have him to some port work to. we will see how the saw takes to it
No, as my goal is to get the most out out of my saws with average bench tools and help others do the same... to improve performance, efficiency, reliability and longevity. You're gonna like your "new" saw... did you go with oversize jug

sweet saw u got running there
please tell me what you modified and how and how do you like it i am thinking about getting it and moding it if i do ill have a vid on it

nice saw. i have a ms 391 and love it.
you chop well too, great technique!!!
you dont look old enough to have been doing it 30 years - its official, chainsaws keep you young!

Still can not believe a mod homeowner class saw can cut this good. If I get a 039 and some extra cash I am sending you a saw to mod!
I have the same saw with muff mod....best bang for the buck.
Agreed!... plenty of power and torque for minimal cost... my kinda deal.
Did you do your own modification or have it done?...
What size bar does that have again? It wasn't a 28 inch was it?
Nice job ,good video, that saw is a ripper .I'm not picky when it comes to brand .if it runs and it's Sharp I'm happy, thanks again for the vid.
Cool and Thx :) Also I'm diggin your handle... Buzzsaw is my dog Sawyer's nickname :) tho he's more of a lieutenant
Was there any difference between the 390 and the 391?? Cheers
What were you cutting? Looks like hickory, but what do I know.
Wood... :) Couldn't help it. Actually it"s White Oak...

Nice Vid Bro, what are you using for chain/ angles and type?
How old is the 039?.. stihl dont make the 0-- series anymore do they?
Very nice...fantastic
They don't make a full wrap for it. I added part of an inverted std. 361 handle to modify mine to a full wrap. Works awesome.
Let me "explain" that the concept is not lost on me. That is pretty much the point of the video... modified saw, long bar and lots of power.
@billplatinum6 - Thanks, I think the same as well. Definitely lessens the work load.

Good video, nice saw, nice mods 👍
NICE VID!!! what did you set your angles at man? and what did you file the rakers to? very nice sharp saw keep it up :)
1127's are a step below your 066's, and they (066) have different mufflers based on year, but all can be modified and.... yes we can get you hooked up.

Nice mod but the saw is struggling badly with the 28" bar and skip chain. Would probably be a nicer set up with the 25" combo.
yeah nah, not struggling a bit.. a sharp chain and tuned rakers will always pull rpm's down, (stump-snort: the ability to keep cutting under extreme load) ..that's why porting the muffler and opening up the H to a richer setting is so important. She pulls a 32" just as well..

is there any special reason the bar is on upside down??
Stihl designs their bars with oiler holes in both the top and bottom rail. So I rotate the bar every service to keep the rails from wearing unevenly and reduce the formation of "burrs"... If the paint was worn off would it still be upside down? :)

Full chisel or skip?
good job, nice saw.
Man you like your fire wood thin
:)...How would you like your order, wafer thin or paper thin?.... 12 cuts on half of a 16" long round (=8")
What type of oiler mod did you do ?
I turned the oiler all the way up and opened the oiler port a little. I recommend just turning the oiler up first as opening the port can get a little messy. Run a 'high tack' bar oil to keep the oil in the bar and chain at high RPMs and it should get the job done. The oil port in the bar may be tiny and restictive, newer bars are that way, a little drill bit goes a long ways... open oiler first and test, if good run it.
Does your saw run out of oil before gas with it opened up?
are they 660 dogs?
Seems ok to me. Loose chain could be deadly. I have on only once worked with loose chain and accident happened right away.
I can get these and Mod. them along with roller for intrested parties.....just P/M me
I want to see how you manage to breed this handle together.
Nope.... some end-tables, a coffee table and a book shelf... still working with some.
proof of the full wrap bar???
nice saw!!!!!!!
'preciate that!... and for those that might wonder, he's Stihl shreddin' it up :)
I have that same saw it kicks butt. I did the muffler mod from your video, thanks a lot its noticeably quicker. Keep up the cool videos, take care.
Right on... stoked to hear that! Be sure to upgrade to a floating rim sprocket, that'll free it up even more. Those stock spur sprockets suck up power and eat drivers when you throw a chain and you can run less chain tension that way :) ...Timmmberr....
