Hi there. Thanks for taking the time out to make this video, it has definitely helped me out big time. - I use a lot of little bits and pieces from the hardware store in my welding. With MIG or stick welding I can get away with just welding them and it works. However with TIG, then everything needs to be good clean metal, so thanks for the tip on how to get rid of the zinc coating. Also, thanks for showing that once cleaned by this method, parts can then be TIG welded. Respect to you, David.
The black stuff is Iron(II, III) oxide (magnetite). Raw steel is nice and shiny. Its also a major component of mill scale. Best practice would probably be to remove it but it is a fairly light coating.
Sorry to impose but Is it down to bare metal after dipping in vinegar and then using an abrasive to remove the black coating? I have evaporust and vinegar both. I can’t use muriatic acid because I’ll get a 3 day headache.
Awesome, thank you. So the same process also works for the cadmium coating. Tossing the zinc pieces in too. BTW, I'm working on a 67 Mustang. Stripping the hardware before I black oxide them.
Informative video; hard to get what you're saying with the music being louder than you. Try to favor your voice instead of the music, next time you edit a video. Other than that, cool tip.
True. I tried with subtitles for the few parts I couldn't understand well, but the automatic subtitle feature was just as disturbed by the noise, so that didn't help. Still a useful video, though.
1:25 Muriatic acid fumes are also toxic and will rust up steel indoors lol. Nasty stuff! You can buy concentrated Vinegar (30%) at Lowe's / Online. This will drastically reduce your time letting it sit. It's about $20 / gallon, and you can cut it with 5% (cooking) or 10% (cleaning) vinegar if you need a higher volume. I have an "under bed" storage tote (with lid) that I have about 6 Gallons of I think 15% vinegar in. I can strip millscale off my tubing / flat is about 4 hours. This loosens the millscale enough that I can wipe it right off with a scotch brite. Then, I rinse it with water and hit it with rust inhibitor while wet. SIDENOTE: I have an exhaust fan and I also pop the garage door open when removing the lid. I don't believe the fumes are super toxic from millscale, but you don't want to inhale the concentrated vinegar anyways, it hits pretty hard and smells awful to me. I'll definitely be even more cautious if doing this with zinc / galvanized fumes.
You can buy 60% vinegar (grocery store is 5%) from big box stores. It'll do the job a bit faster. It's safe if you don't drink it or get it in your eyes.
Muriatic acid is actually 32% hydrochloric acid. You can dilute it down to 10% with water to make it safer to use. That is what I do and it removes zinc in a few hours. I then coat with phosphoric acid which creates a layer of iron phosphate that acts as a rust barrier. Paint will adhere nicely.
Great video. Question about painting zinc coated steal. Should you remove the zinc before painting, using your method or is an abrasive pad and a wash fine?
What do you do with the vinegar when you're done? I wonder about the toxicity of the vinegar post-stripping, but have no idea whether it's actually an issue. PS I've heard MUCH worse music in these how to videos on UA-cam, didn't bother me much (although I wouldn't miss it either)
Sorry I cant help answer your question, but out of curiosity, where are you finding cadmium plated hardware? From my understanding this coating type has been outlawed...except maybe for aviation hardware. I may be misinformed, so apologies in advance.
I wonder if it has occurred to this guy that he might be absorbing dissolved lead and zinc through his bare fingertips. I'm not a chemist but since the vinegar is absorbing the metals, would be wearing nitrile gloves.
I cannot stand when people make educational videos and play music. If I wanted to hear music I would turn on the radio. Why do y’all do this. You think it sounds cool or what?
Music background sucks. What the hell's the matter? Don't you ask anyone listen to to your videos before you put them up?????? and why not? Your music taste sucks for the general public. Keep it to your self. We're interested in what you are trying to show - your idea of music or background noise for the video is unwelcome. Sorry grasshopper, pay attention, but this is the truth.
Dude, chill the hell out. Obviously the music is way too loud. But you know what even more annoying? Stupid comments like these. How about you stop complaining, and find something better to do with your life.

Nix the music. Please.
I enjoy the music.
Even though the theory was sound, I was still surprised at how well and quickly it worked. Bravo!
Great video man, you took your little dude in to consideration big props!
I've used vinegar to remove rust. It speeds up the process quite a bit if it is warmed up.
Music was killing me a little bit there lol, but thank you, that was helpful.
Two years later the music is still trash haha
4 years 🤣@@patrickcarney3110

@@jeremyandrews4022 You can use caustic soda to remove zinc, a 10% or more solution will suffice
That would explain the magnets at the end
Awesome, thank you.

Tossing the zinc pieces in too.

Great information. I've been using this method for a little while now. Thanks for sharing
What do I do if my metal has some huge yellow spots after a day of being put in vinegar

Can you use rice vinegar?

I’ll give that a shot! I did not know that was a thing

That’s awesome, I was wondering how you remove galvanization… I’m literally soaking some steel in vinegar to remove mill scale…😂 Thanks for the video.
Works well to clean cast iron camp ovens too
Great video. Question about painting zinc coated steal. Should you remove the zinc before painting, using your method or is an abrasive pad and a wash fine?
I'm still learning but I read somewhere where someone said they removed the zinc and then it was ready for painting.
Did you find the answer?
Great tip. Hope do you get rid of the vinegar with the zink disolved in it, afterwards? Thanks
Make galvanized pickles

30% acid vingar is available in the garden/weed section at Ace Hdwr.
This doesn't cause hydrogen embrittlement like hydrochloric acid?
I find that the vinegar plus salt works faster
Definitely gonna try that!
Does this work for copper?
I have q watch that is plated by gunmetal or something, its starting to fade so i figured if just remove all of it
Could you then blacken these if you wanted to? Want to try this for chainmaile rings that are zinc coated
Bear Piglett I’m sure that you could.
@@GoheenCycles thank you :)
Thanks. The music is sorry but great tip on the vinegar.
Had to use closed captioning because the music kind of drowns out your voice.
Lol any suggestions for stripping a 31 gal galvanized steel trash can and lid?
Well.......a lot of vinegar? :)
Build a hot fire in it !! Outside of course
Thanks, Like to cool table complete with cup holder.
oven cleaner is more effective. as you dont have to bake the bolt on an oven after stripping the zinc
Excellent tip thanks bro
Will this remove cadmium playing?

Citric acid is faster.
I battled to hear the talking as the music was over bearing
The music is too loud.
ditch the music
You need to turn music off can't there a thing that you are saying.
Thankyou :)
REALLY annoying music. I want to learn how to strip galvanising off not listen to a rock concert!
Quit bitchin
Useless with the music
Music is terrible and makes it near impossible to hear you speak
You can also use coca cola
This guy keeps mumbling with the microphone in the other room, like they didn't listen to the video before uploading
May be it could be good video, but I CAN NOT HEAR YOU 👎

this was a really long video to just say, "put it in vinegar for 12 hours"
