    I recently found and bought a black mono box #849. All the albums are near mint and the box is very good plus. It’s amazing. Definitely something I will hold onto and pass on to my kids. Thanks to Andrew and this channel my Beatles vinyl collection is something I’m proud of. Because of this channel I have added the Mono box set, the German Magical Mystery Tour (A1-B3), and maybe my favorite, the Yellow Submarine soundtrack.

    Recently scored the mono Rubber Soul from this batch, with the -5/-5 cutting (the perks of working in a record store). It sounds amazing and perfectly balanced.

    Having grown up in the 80's and thus being accustomed to the stereo versions of the 60's recordings and never having experienced the era of mono vinyl and AM radio, I always felt that mono was just inferior and archaic and contained no inherent benefit whatsoever towards stereo. I also had the Yugoslav pressings of the first 3 Beatles albums, which all used the stereo mixes, while elsewhere they were only available in mono back in the day, and while the Yugoslav vinyls and cassettes were generally of lesser quality, I still preferred those. It wasn't until the Beatles mono albums were reissued in 2009 that I completely shifted my opinion on that issue, and Sgt Pepper especially was an absolute eye (or in fact ear) opener. Before that I could have never conceived that such a sonically complex and multi-layered record of all things would actually sound better in mono, but lo and behold, I stood corrected. Since then, I keep looking for original mono mixes of anything 60's and fortunately, a lot of those have been reissued on digital by now, such as the Dylan and Stones albums, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, or the complete Motown singles discography. There are still exceptions though. Jimi Hendrix for instance was practically born for stereo and he would basically go crazy on that format with all those panning sound effects, and I still do prefer the '95 stereo remix of Pet Sounds to the original mono version, as a matter of fact. But overall, I've come to appreciate the more punchy and dense sound of mono as opposed to the somewhat thin and empty sounding extreme channel separation of old stereo, which can be quite strenuous to the ears, especially on headphones.

    • @thomascars1
      @thomascars1 Рік тому

      The first Hendrix album sounds awful in stereo. Hard panned with no cool effects

    • @mondegreen9709
      @mondegreen9709 Рік тому +1

      @@thomascars1 True, that was rather crude 4 track technology. I was thinking more of Electric Ladyland though. Jimi would've gone mental on surround sound if he'd had the technology available back then.

      I was always under the impression that Mark Lewisohn was prohibited by EMI (and their corporate successors) from updating his book about "The Beatles Recording Session" with updated or additional info.The owner of the recordings owns the copyright on that book that Lewisohn wrote. It is possible that some recordings that were thought lost at the time were later found. Clearly, Lewisohn was not actually able to listen to some of the 1963 sessions that he wrote about. Yes, the "With The Beatles" outtakes (excepting "Don't Bother Me" & "Hold Me Tight") are gone. The tapes were re-used. But more outtakes from the "Please Please Me" sessions (beyond those heard on bootlegs) may have been found. And Lewisohn never spoke about why the single version of "Help" has a different lead vocal.

    • @LanceHall
      @LanceHall 3 роки тому +1

      @@56dinosaur Lewisohn has been out of the Beatles loop since he got accused of copying and leaking the sessions tapes (he didn't) to bootleggers and Harrison believed (was told) he was the culprit because he was listening to all those tapes before they got bootlegged. Lewisohn had no knowledge about the single version of "Help!" because it was only figured out in recent years that the mono vocal was done at the film studio not EMI. Lewisohn himself now disowns "Recording Sessions". I assume it's because of inaccuracies about the recordings. Lewisohn was pressed to finish on a certain date and was not able to hear everything so he apparently made assumptions on some things. For example we now know Eric Clapton played live on all the basic takes of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" his guitar was not an overdub on the best take as was assumed. Lewsohn saying "You Won't See Me" has no Hammond organ is an obvious goof. Also saying the stereo mix of "Money" was done by playing two tapes in sync is a goof.

    Wonderful explanation of how the '82 set was produced. I was always curious about Harry Moss' level of involvement. I do love my 2014 box, and this just confirms that they did an excellent job. To "complete" my collection, I have a MoFi Abbey Road, LIB UK box, and then a copy of disk 2 of 1967-70 (for The Ballad of John & Yoko, Old Brown Shoe, and the Let It Be 45 mix).

    Great analysis, Andrew. I've had the BM1 box (#391) since I received it as a Christmas gift in 1982. Since then, it's been dubbed to Cro2 cassette, minidisc, CD and finally iPod. Other than that, I try not to touch it! It contains the stereo labelled Yellow Submarine, the -1 cut of SPLHCB, and the Harry Moss recuts of Rubber Soul and With The Beatles. The White Album is all -2 cuts except side 3 which is a -4 cut (and all 4 sides are muddy, IMO). By far my favorite versions I own of Please Please Me, Rubber Soul, SPLHCB and Revolver. Looking forward to your next video.

    Love that Beatlesque copyright free track you open the video with (as any content creator does in their given situations with their particular videos). It's a great example of how the Beatles would have sounded if they sucked. 😂😂
    But now in all seriousness, I always enjoy your content. Although while you are a huge vinyl collector predominantly, my collection only goes as far as the CDs. But thanks to you, I've come to appreciate the art of the remaster or mix. That's why despite buying the 2009 box sets, I kept my 1987 CDs and excitedly picked up the US box set, along with all the following remixes in current years including the deluxe 1+ Blu-ray set. Not to mention everything in between like the BBC, Anthologies, and "Naked" CDs. And that's just the audio part of the collection...well, most of it. 😊👍🏼🔥🔥

It appears now that I should seek out some of the original copies. I’d love to see a similar study done on the EP and Singles boxes, as they all seem to be a mishmash of recuts, and reused labels.

    Hey Andrew, thanks for another great analysis!
    I've read all the comments so far and the recommendations for future videos are good, but starting to border on obscure and/or fringe subjects. However, there is still a very mainstream item you have yet to cover.
    After BC13, best UK pressings, Mono boxes comp, Singles boxes comp, etc, I believe it's time to address the big elephant in the room: the 2012 Stereo Box Set.
    Yes, it's cut from digital sources and yes there is already dozens of videos about it. But none with the insights and detail granularity that you put recordings through in your analyses.
    It's probably the most popular Beatles box set ever sold, the only one you can still currently purchase at a "reasonable" price and I still believe "Beatles for Sale" and "Help!" from the Stereo boxset sound better than the 2014 Mono versions. Keep them coming. Cheers!

    Another home run on this one - well done!!! I remember seeing the red box as an import in 1982 when I was 16 in A&A's in Toronto. The price was too great for me to spend at the time, but looking back on it I wish I had purchased multiple boxes (when time travel is invented, I will pick you up another box lol). I think you could do a comparison of the UK and German pressings - as they are very interesting (bass heavy stereo Revolver, DMM White Album on white...etc) OR possibly the Australian pressings (as you know they would sometimes use the same stampers). I was lucky enough to get a few of the 81/82 mono pressings on Ebay a few summers ago that were imported into the US with these interesting white labels on the front. Message me if you have never seen these labels before. :) Mind you, I was outbid for Revolver and Help (but snagged Please Please Me, A Hard Day's Night, Beatles For Sale, Rubber Soul (the -5/-5 mmm!), The White Album and Yellow Submarine (-1/-1 too!).

    It occurs to me that from now on every Beatle song can be remixed and then released many times. Every time they can boost the vocals or boost any instrument or even add sounds from tracks that were left off the original releases. In his way EMI will make a fortune.
    What EMI needs to do is release all Beatle songs in the future on a new medium that has ALL the isolated channels on it so it is in effect an exact copy of the MASTER TAPE. Together with the launch of a new player for this new medium the listener can play back these songs either in the default way they were originally released OR the user can boost any track with a mixing table included with the player. So in effect the user can pay back any way they want and listen to any isolated track or boost tracks etc.
    Listen to bass track only or drums only or vocals only. Then if you add AI you can isolate parts that are on one track .
    I wouldnt pay for any new releases based on new mixes BUT I would pay for both all Beatle songs released with all individual tracks accessable to the listener and the player needed.

    Great stuff...I think it was a good suggestion to seek out the 1981 pressings individually then getting the boxset...as its quite pricey these days.
    One thing that might be interesting is to do a comparison of say ...the Japanese pressings...I do realize there are a few variations (the flag series..the beatles forever series...or even the 1966 Ever Clean Series which used the Odeon labels)..but it would interesting to hear how they compare. Also numerous German pressings seem to get favorable reviews. Just a thought.

But if EMI spent a little more time and money for this release-it would be great to have opportunity to hear something different (solid state equipment has it’s own sound and maybe Harry could use different EQ’s). Maybe it would not be better- but we never know.

    You note the meticulous care given by EMI to all things Beatles. The Beatles, along with Cliff Richards, were allegedly the only two EMI artists to be granted such a luxury after a clear-out order came from the top dogs at the company to destroy old company paperwork. The purpose of this (circa 1985) order was to make room for perhaps more recent paperwork on newer artists, or maybe even work space for EMI in England. I first heard this from someone in the UK back then. In the later 1980s and early 1990s I heard about the after effects from an American audio researcher who had worked in at least two compilation projects on the Hollies at the time (the same person was involved in a couple of Beatles' reissues as well). If you can imagine, looking for historical, landmark recordings somewhere in the EMI UK vaults, only to not be able to immediately locate them due to EMI's earlier "paper cut" policy. We are so lucky with the Beatles.

    I’ve owned two of the black boxes over the years and a full set of individual mono LPs. However, I sold both black boxes when the 2014 mono box came out. I do wish I had kept one now! For individual LP set, I saved all the org cuttings copies there were rather than any of the recuts though.

    I kinda remember the 1981 mono collection box set. I say "kinda" since I never actually saw a black box since I live here in the U.S., specifically L.A./Southern California. What I remember is seeing one on the mono LP's, Beatles For Sale at a Montgomery Ward's in West Covina, California. What probably happened is Ward's got a copy of the black box, and broke it up to separately sell each album. I don't remember how much Ward's charged for the BFS mono LP, but I knew this was special, since I didn't see any other that day, or never saw any of the other mono UK albums on return visits.. I begged either my Dad or grandparents, I don't remember who I was with that day, to buy it for me...they flatly said no. I was a bit disappointed, but I got over it.
    If I can, I'd to suggest a video on the differences between the original 1987/88 CD releases, and the 2009 remasters. That would be fascinating. Thanks for the great videos.

My cutting numbers are pretty much the same as the ones you describe (my copy of Rubber Soul has -5 cutting on side 1 and -6 cutting on side 2), except that I have -1s on both sides of Sgt. Pepper, suggesting the US black box sets were produced earlier than the UK. Does that make sense?

    I got invited there a few times by the owner Karen just before it shut down. I cringe now looking back on stuff I passed over as I simply didn’t have the room to store all the stuff she wanted rid of.
    I got offered boxes and boxes and boxes of old master-tapes that no-one wanted anymore , I just didn’t have the storage room to take a chance of buying it nor the capability of playing it either....although they did offer me to buy the old huge tape machines , I’m guessing the Struder machines, but again where would I put it all?
    Now of course analog tape machines are all the rage again but at the time nobody wanted them , I had 3 domestic use Akai tape machines at the shop for cheap that no-one wanted to buy so where would I put these professional machines?
    I could kick myself now of course !
