      sorry, seen quieter examples around with more rigid insulation facing in, absorbing the sound directly. with both inside and outside walls connected to the same frame, sound will transfer almost just as easy with or without the packing. also, it needs an air inlet for both engine inlet and engine and generator cooling air. will you also run it loaded? big difference in noise there.

    • @MrSpaz12
      @MrSpaz12 7 років тому +10

      Well, I don't think I'd run it indoors is a good idea because of carbon monoxide.
      Anyway, just a hole cut in one side with a fan to pull air through to keep it cool. At least a hole for ventilation if you're in cooler climates. Myself, I live in Vegas where it's incredibly hot and I'm going to be using a fan with copper coils surrounding it with ice water from a large cooler running through the coils.I don't think you need to go to those extremes in cooler climates; just a breeze should do.

      +Spaz 12 I think I'll have to take your advice and install a portable 10" fan that can plug in the generator. I'm sure it will help the box airflow. I'll probably build a larger second box to run tests and compare and come out with a quiet box update video. I do appreciate the comment and advice!

    I once had a van with a air compressor in it had the exhaust running through the floorboard. I shut the doors because it was raining and the motor just stopped because it got too hot inside. It was fine and been working since I put it in a service truck open in the back. if it gets too hot that I know of they'll just shut off the air cooled 4-stroke engines.

  • @mokedokie

    I made one out of doubled 2" rigid foam which easily went together in an hour. One difference was I left a large air flow space to allow for cooling of the motor. Nice video.

    Good video. Using this as a base and making mods to it. One... It's gonna be easier to put the inner panels on first I think. Two, before screwing on the external panels, lay in the insulation. That will definitely help to avoid any bunching or gaps from trying to shove it down between the panels. And lastly, as many others have said, you've definitely got to have two fans. One for air coming in and one to exhaust hot air out.

  • @michaelwilliams7404
    @michaelwilliams7404 7 років тому +2

    I think if the genset is going to be on grass or soft ground the airflow vents could be close to the ground for absorption. I know heat rises but if max quiet is needed that would at least let air move. I have heard that on top is best and the sound goes "up" which makes sense since most people aren't right on top of the unit.

  • @JamesBCrawford

    Great starter idea! I would add in and out ventilation holes. These won't have to be too large with the addition of a small electric fan powered from one of the 120 outlets. For what I will need to do I might make the box so it will fold for storage in a RV. Thanks for the upload.

  • @max1chase166
    @max1chase166 7 років тому +18

    you need to cut a fresh air intake where the pull string is to draw in cool air to cool the engine and at the same time push off heated air off the generator, ad a exterior piece on the inlet end angled at a 45 deg angle which will deflect that sound downward. nice project, liked the double wall system.

      +Max1Chase1 I've since installed a fan which has helped to cool the engine. Great idea on inlet at a 45 to deflect sound! I'll be posting an updated video soon.

    I like the simplicity of the box design and construction but if you use extruded polystyrene (XPS) backer board you will to have more space to ensure the XPS does not melt, so slightly bigger box. AND to protect the generator windings from meltdown especially when under load, you will need to provide FORCED ventilation (an exhaust fan and a fresh air inlet on the opposite end to the fan). It would be better to use a polyurethane (PU) foam backer board or ductboard if its available as the melting point of the PU foam is much higher.......

    Nice light weight box to stop the sound, but instead of using insulation that "retards heat" (the pink stuff by Corning) use the insulation that "retards sound" (the usually brown stuff by Rockwool). This way you can at least avoid holding in the heat that the engine makes. But, there must be a way to get air flow or your engine wont last very long. Thanks

      I agree with you. And instead using a flat surface inside as the plywood you used there is a sound and fire proof foam in amazon . That way the sound is absorbed instead of bounce back from flat surface.

    Have already commented once (of course derogatory) somewhere down below. The "box within a box" is a standard concept and a sound one (no pun intended) in soundproofing. However, would like to add something in the making as I have some experience with the concept seeing I did similar in the walls in my woodshop to make it less noisy for my neighbors. This detail may seem small but is essential in building a "box within a box" soundproof scenario. The fasteners, in your case the screws, can not connect the outside box to the inside. Meaning the inside box can not directly touch the outside box. NOR can the same screw be used. Even though you have an air pocket between the walls you defeat the effect when the same fastener connected the two walls together. The sound will transfer through the fastener and all will be lost. There is a correct way and easily performed and can be found on the internet. Therefore, the "box within a box" is a great soundproofing concept when done correctly....not saying the video produced here is a good one but the concept has been proven.

    Ok we know it’s going to over heat. We know there’s no snorkel to allow air in the engine. How about building the walls on a 45 degree angle so that the sound deflects off the side walls and gets absorbed by the ground which is usually dirt or grass. Just a thought.

      That's a great question! I should have put the insulation before the sides, it was hard to put it in afterwards!

    • @art4style
      @art4style 6 років тому

      exactly and it will be possible to press there even more insulation layers, but better would be to buy sound insulation boards + sound insulation at home depot also would be nice to put hinges lol etc to make it foldable. That would be so fun diy project for me, I don't own generator tho haha

    • @tgriebe
      @tgriebe 6 років тому

      Actually, it would be more effective if the walls were double thickness and the bare insulation faced the generator. The fiberglass would then absorb high frequency noise and the double walls would more effectively block lower frequency noise.

    Creo que eso hará que el generador se recaliente, no le aplicaría eso a mi generador , saludos desde Chile

    Cool video, thanks. Did you think using sound board instead of backer board on the inside?

    • @LandbergTileTV
      @LandbergTileTV  5 років тому

      I don't know what sound board is. I used foam backer board because I had some panels left over from a tile job. Also, the board is rigid and SUPER light

    Along with the lack of ventilation, I question the need for high heat paint especially with all that insulation.

      I did add a fan for air flow and outlet access ect. Check out these videos on the fan install and the box in use camping.

    That's great but after prolonged use I don't see how you have fresh air coming in to cool your air cooled engine. You will burn your system up. Your generator also needs cooling air. When you get this fixed and can both quieten down the machine while keeping it cool and from self destructing from heat let me know.

    It won't get *_as_* hot, as long as he doesn't plug anything into it - which is really nice. You can make people in your neighborhood believe you're enjoying creature comforts mostly quietly, which builds the envy you're mostly interested in.

    the box seems really small to have a hot engine running on the inside and with that muffler poking to the outside it is not that quiet this is a great video that you took this on we need to find a simple box to run these generators without pissing off The neighbors

    Ummm no vent means blown gen and where do you run power cords ? I do see problem with venting sound will in crease dramatically unless you add louder vents with fans point vent to ground.

      I started with the standard, sometimes I wish I had it...it allows pics & video straight to phone, whereas mine is 4k and you must upload to puter, then convert so puter knows what it is, grrrrrrrr !
      Yeah I've been waiting on Mavic to come down and it hasn't...I may push the button soon !
