- Countries around the world have begun to approve the most anticipated vaccine of the 21st century - but getting it to 8 billion people is going to be a massive undertaking with many logistical challenges. The different vaccines need to be kept at various cold temperatures, transported to isolated and hard-to-reach areas, and fit onto different-sized planes.
And all of that has to happen as the 2020 holiday season begins. The cargo industry has already been overwhelmed this year by many people shopping from home, leading to shipping surges and late packages. There will likely be a fight for space between vaccines, Amazon packages, furniture, cars, and other cargo.
Lufthansa Cargo recently upgraded its Chicago O'Hare facility to be able to handle a large amount of pharmaceutical shipments. We went inside to see how the team is getting ready to ship up to 10 million vaccine doses a day.
Correction: Vaccines requiring extremely cold storage could be transported with nitrogen cryogenic liquid, not nitroglycerin, as stated in the video. Insider regrets the error.

I couldn’t imagine being a forklift worker and dropping a pallet of COVID vaccines
I was a Air Transporter in the Air Force (same job these people are doing with building pallets and loading them in aircraft). It's pretty hard to drop a pallet with a forklift when you've had enough practice driving one. We would have All Terrain forklifts for driving on non paved surfaces (like a cargo yard in deployed areas that were a big dirt and gravel lot), and I don't recall any pallets falling off my forklift tines. The cargo also has to be packed pretty tight so that it doesn't shuffle around when the aircraft takes off. So even if a pallet fell a forklift, it likely wouldn't damage the cargo. When you drive around with cargo, you keep the tines close to the ground. You wouldn't drive 50 feet with the cargo 5 feet from the ground. We'd sometimes have to rotate pallets 90 degrees (they're rectangles, not squares), so you could put it on the ground, then put your tines on the ground so you could scoop it right up from the other side.

Governments basically gave scientists an unlimited pot of research money so they could try everything all at once. Also, mRNA technology is super cool and lets you engineer safer vaccines faster than traditional methods.

I’m a FedEx express driver and we’ve had covid vaccine shipments come through our facility and been ground delivered to medical facilities already. Really neat to be delivering these first hand.
Wish I could volunteer in helping deliver these vaccines to people. Must feel tiring working around the clock but if it's helping the world, why not?

This is fraud, nothing else. They received billions in euros to keep them afloat and keep their workers on, and now they sunk their claws into transporting the vaccines around the globe, earning good money with that once demand grows, and nothing of it will be invested back into the employess or used up to repay state loans and aids.

There are 2 important factors on the heat transfer and in the cold sensation alongside the room temperature: one is the relative humidity of the air and the other is the wind... And that´s a room with (controlled) low humidity and no fans... not a place to spend a couple of hours anyway without protective gear.

Well, since Lufthansa is currently letting go of thousands of pilots, ground crew, logistics people and flight personal in europe, and that despite already having recieved billions of euros in state loans and aids to prevent just that, these other airlines just need to start looking somewhere else and will find plenty of angry former lufthansa employes just looking for new work.
