@Beth black she doesn't have to be the worst. She's still a racist dumb fuck. For all we know her husband could've been part of the klan. A lot of white wifes in the south, didn't even know their husbands were klan members, especially those that had a lot of money (they were by far the worst). A simple complaint would not get them targeted. It'd have to be far more than that. Trust and believe that!

@@matthewlocke9225 I think the wealthier white men who weren't klan were part of the White Citizen Council and they had ties to the klan although I daresay there were some wealthy men that were klan they were probably the ones leading the racist thugs who are stupid and follow orders like sheep. Another great film based on a true story is Mississippi Burning about the murder of three Civil Right's Activists who are murdered for trying to set up a voters registration for black people in Mississippi I won't spoil it for you but its a brilliant film Gene Hackman and Willem Defoe are fantastic

Bryce was absolutely fantastic! She played Hilly just like she's desribed in the book, a busybody, controlling, petty, vindictive and the passive aggressive behaviour was so spot on I'm wondering if Bryce read the book. The only thing I will say is the movie toned down just how vindictive Hilly is in the book as hard as it may be to believe Hilly was a very vindictive to anyone who "crossed" her and never fell into line.

The irony is in the book it's hinted that Hilly is a loving mother to her kids (she has two kids in the book but her daughter doesn't appear in the movie) and it's Aibileen who makes that observation about Hilly in the book that's she's a loving and attentive mother.
Hilly is also alot more spiteful in the book than the film believe it or not. When she finds those segregation laws in Skeeter's bag she tells Stuart to prevent him and Skeeter getting back together (he and Skeeter break up earlier and he never finds out about the book) and Stuart doesn't believe it. Hilly is also alot nastier to Celia than in the film. When Celia tries to talk to her at the benefit and her dress gets ripped Hilly tells people that Celia has a drink problem and is a compulsive liar who tricked Johnny into marrying her because she said she was pregnant. She then sends Celia a nasty passive-aggressive letter telling her she is banned from helping out in the Junior League and any future benefits. She then tells her to pay $200 towards Hilly's ripped dress. Later on after Minny tells Celia the truth about the pie, whilst cleaning she finds the cheque written out to "two slice Hilly" LOL
Mrs Walters reaction to the pie is funnier in the book. When Minny takes that pie to Hilly she gets smug and says "I knew I'd get my way in the end" and when they both realise what was in the pie Mrs Walters laughs and tells Hilly "I wouldn't go tattling on Minny now Hilly or you'll be known as the one who ate two slices of Minny's shit" 😂😂😂😂 Mrs Walters is savage

@@kachi9293 If you want to lie and pretend that you're a doctor and not a racist, you need to really work on your writing skills (doctors have to go to college), reasoning (you contradict your own points repeatedly), and organization - both when it comes to syntax and structure (that's a barely readable mess) and organization of ideas (if it's medical, then why are you bitching about the handyman peeing on the seat, which you acknowledge won't spread disease).
You are grossed out by some people, it seems like you choose class as the marker of poor hygiene. Your family members used both class and race. That any of them were allegedly medical professionals does not erase their racism.
If you'd like to learn more about how to construct effective arguments on this topic, I'd suggest starting with a thorough study of the history of racism, like actually learning facts and not what people you know said one time, and also review the classic logical fallacies and how to avoid making them (I'd start with appeal to authority or petitio principe).
I'd wish you luck, but I don't want you to succeed, and rest comfortably assured that you will either never read this post, or read it and fail to understand it, possibly replying with another poorly written, poorly reasoned screed that I will never see. Have fun with it.

One of the sacrifices of a good actor in succeeding to bring a great villan to life. It's tough. I've had to do it on stage a few times. It's a great personal challenge for an actor and can gain you a lot of respect from your peers, but the curtain calls are rough, nobody's sending flowers to your dressing room or hanging around the stage door to meet you. Some actors even have to deal with real life aggression frompeople who do not realize the character isn't the actor.

It's the Jack Gleeson Effect. When an actor is TOO good at playing a villain, people tend to hate the character so much, the actor themselves can end up not getting the recognition and credit they deserve!

Bryce was good as Hilly but she wasn't really anything more than a one-note villain. I don't think you can compare her performance with Jessica's because they're such different characters. Jessica played a modulated character who seemed empty-headed on the surface but was in reality deeply feeling and complex whereas Bryce was just a meanie almost on the level of pantomime.

With Hilly, it's all about power, feminism, and being a voice for white supremacy. White women back then weren't allowed to be a part of politics or any position of power so they had to carve out their own freedom and their own say so and the best way to do that is through the household which was seen as a feminine domain. While white males exercised racism through politics, police, and rules and regulations, white women exercised their racism and their power in the household where they had absolute or close to absolute control.

@ 1:54 "Believe it or not, there are real racists in this town" speaks so well to the well-meaning racist, whose racism doesn't come from hate but from a misguided sense of racial insecurity. Hilly has probably heard of or even seen lynchings, has heard townsfolk use slurs and has witnessed violence against black people. To her, racism isn't the dehumanisation of black people through systems like law and police but rather the often brutal if not deadly treatment of black people. That's why she will never probably see why she is wrong.

She was probably in shock that Aibileen dared to speak to her like that. Remember Hilly is used to people treating her like she's the Queen Bee and expects everyone especially "the help" to obey her. So when Aibileen dropped the "yes ma'am" submissive act and told Hilly some home truths about herself and it caught Hilly by surprise as she saw herself through Aibileen's eyes and it wasn't exactly pleasant.

    • @Justice-ef9sk

Hilly was a product of her environment. The movie villainized her when she refused to loan money to her maid. First of all, this maid just started working for Hilly… so when Hilly refused to loan her any money, she wasn’t wrong. And then what does the maid do? She steals from hilly. So I ask again, how is Haley wrong? She’s not.
Now, what she tried to do to Abilene later on, THAT was absolutely wrong.
But refusing to loan her maid money? No. She wasn’t wrong at all for that. People need to look at it from the other side instead of just assuming the “poor black maid is a victim.”That woman was a thief.
