Here's the problem a lot of Game Devs make.... When they want to change something significantly they often nerf a particular core element.
They always think in terms of nerfing.
Instead, just buff the other thing. For example leave remote raids the way they were, but add on specials perks or bonuses for in person events if your entire goal is just to try motivate people to meet up again in the real world.
That way those that it doesn't suit can remain playing the way that meets their needs.

As someone who has hundreds of friends who remote raided 50+ legendaries daily.. I’m not sure incentives would work. It wasn’t a case of “Oh let’s do better here and everyone will follow.” They knew it wasn’t going to work. You could half shiny odds, guaranteed XL rare candy, +3 XL candy, IV ceiling of 12/12/12, etc. People still wouldn’t choose to raid in person over remote raid. Local communities would just say “Someone go out there and invite us all”. It sucks to not be able to raid unlimitedly, but no amount of incentives would’ve gotten as many people outside as a hard limit of 5 and a price increase. Both passes were 100 coins, why would you ever choose to raid in person over remote raids?

To bring some more nuance to the 2017 GO Fest Disaster, Niantic did contact company's like Verizon with the question if they could add temporary cell towers near the event area because they were scared the network couldn't handle it otherwise, but the companies said no because "It had never been an issue before with any other events at this location". Thus completely ignoring the fact that other event's don't have everyone using the network intensly by playing a mobile game..... And then the one thing happened that they said wouldn't happen.

Since I stopped playing Pokemon Go, I've improved my life in so many different ways, I've spent more time with my loved ones, and I've saved a ton of money. Better yet, I've seen just how disastrous it can be to be addicted to a video game. I don't think there's anything Niantic can do to get me to come back and be a hardcore player that drops cash in this game, and I'm truly happy for this. Thank you, Niantic. 🎉

Man thanks for your work on these issues. The change’s destroyed the game for me and my kids. We played daily and I spent money daily. But due to the changes we had all but stopped playing. We get out and play but rural play, lack of time and inability to beat most raids. I haven’t caught a legendary since the beginning of the changes. I have almost 400 friends and use to get 30-40 invites a day, I refuse to be punished financially for a game so I don’t remote anymore. And to top it off I have received less than 3-5 invites a week. I know they are feeling the changes but you are right in your analysis they may not recover from this self inflicted injury. Keep up the great content.

It was really hard to do, but 3 weeks later, I feel really good about my decision to stop. I didn't have an unhealthy habit with the game, I just don't want to have to spend much money to enjoy it, and with Niantic putting prices up unnecessarily high, I knew it was time to put it down. Don't worry, I'm sure they will say sorry soon, revert the changes and give us all a couple of silver pineaps for the inconvenience.😂😂

Got my shiny shadow mewtwo, and came together with people of similar interests just like the game intends. That's great and something worth trying to make happen for more people, but Niantic has to also understand that " most " people are some combination of very young, very old, disabled, anti-social, or have too rigid of a daily schedule to consistently do things under such strict times/rules. Giving the " majority " of the players enough flexibility and quality of life options are what keep the game successful enough to keep around and fund those larger events that people like you or me can enjoy. I joined in 2020 during the pandemic. PG gave my family a way to stay connected and play - no matter where we were. We all live in different states, so this game was central. We were connected. When we physically saw each other, we traded. We compared. We had fun. I made friends all over the world and I never turned down a remote raid invitation. I loved trading gifts and logging into the game every morning to see what my friends were doing and the gifts.
Then the Remote Raid nerf. Niantic doubled the cost - so now my gaming costs me twice as much and if that was not bad enough, my raiding is limited to 5 times a day. This would end any remote raids from friends as I would need all of them for my family. That is - if my family raided that day. So - I deleted the game from my phone. The family events broke up. No more remote raids. Niantic didn't have to bust the game for me in order to promote in person raids. Incentivize in person raids better. Give extra bling. Whatever. It is always better to give than take away.
Given that Niantic does not want to talk about it, but move forward - this tells me all I need to know about their business practices. All I can do is warn you: if they did it to me, they will do it to you in the blink of an eye. If the game is fun and playable for you - congrats. You must be their target customer. Enjoy. Just be warned that your gameplay can change quickly as well.

I feel like I have a pretty positive impression of the game so far! I only joined the game in March, so I didn’t have much time to remote raid before it got nerfed. Since then I’ve met quite a few people in my local community and it’s been a blast doing raids and other events with them. This is the only game experience that has really connected me with others in the real world. Granted I live in a big city, so there’s lots of stops and people to meet. 😅

When this game came out, it was so magical. At the time every single friend I knew was playing and it was all the buzz. We'd go to this park that had an insane cluster of stops and such. And massive amounts of people would show up to this place and chill till late night. Everyone was so nice, it was chill, the events were epic.
I recently picked it up again myself because I sort of yearned for those times again. But heck, adulting. Hopefully it continues to pick back up. Ive been itching to play pokemon mobile like in some fashion. So opted out for GO (for now). We'll see.

I’d also really like joining others to help out, but when Niantic decided to ignore us because of some stubborn point-of-view it upset me to the point I thought to myself, why give this company my money, more importantly my time if they would just ignore me as a player? I spent a fair amount of money and time in the game, was close to level 42 but just quit cold turkey. I’ve not played any events no matter how enticing because it felt like it was for show, rather than for the fans. But hey, if they revert I’ll come back, until then guess I’ll just move on. As well as to sell the information to the highest bidder. They never cared about the Pokémon IP or community. Still do not. They will sell that data to the highest bidder.

    2. Level 1 - 10, 3 raids per day. 20 - 25, 5 raids per day. From Level 30 to 50 get 10 raids per day. It gives people another reason to level up
    3. Add a chat fuction to the game to make it easier to organize raids and create communities :)

I do remember first playing Pokemon Go back in 2016. There was something fun and charming about finding Pokemon just in my neighborhood or in my backyard. I completely forgot about the disaster of the first Pokemon Go Fest. With that in mind, it's surprising that they managed to become a yearly tradition.
As I've often said, I think it was a huge mistake on Niantic's part to see these changes at the start of the pandemic as temporary bonuses. I understand why to a point given their mission statement, but these were all much needed quality of life updates that made the game more fun and accessible. It wasn't like you could play the game without walking around either. You still needed to get to Pokestops for research and to hatch eggs. The most you could do before was catch some Pokemon with the improved incense and do some raids remotely if you were willing to spend more money for them. Being able to play the game how I wanted made it much more flexible. I liked being able to stay comfortably at home while having the incense going during Community Days. While I do miss the proper six hour Community Days, I don't think that they worked without the improved incense. Honestly, I'd be perfectly fine with the three hour Community Days if they just made them from 11am-2pm instead of 2pm-5pm, especially for the upcoming summer months where it's going to be hot for a lot of places.
A better solution would be to encourage more in person play with better rewards. Actual guaranteed Rare XL candies or more premium items being available for doing in-person raids would really attract a lot of attention. Nerfing remote raids doesn't make me want to join a local community. If I wasn't comfortable doing that before the pandemic, I'm not comfortable with doing it now, with or without the nerf. The only good, or perhaps helpful would be more accurate, thing about this recent change is that I am spending less money on Pokemon Go. I haven't gone full free to play yet for a few reasons, but I am at least trying to spend less money on the game. As much as I love remote raids, I was definitely spending too much money on them, even if I think it was worth it. I don't think that Niantic needed to put a limit and increase the price for me to do that. It really should be on me to limit my spending habits, but this is my attempt at finding something positive in the mist of this decision. I may be too optimistic, but I'd like to hope that the game could improve. There should be a balance between Niantic listening to player feedback and following their mission statement. It doesn't have to be one or the other.

Hey Daxi, love the video. If I am going to be completely honest, I found the Shadow Raids a disappointment. They did not follow the regular IV floors of regular raids (essentially making the passes spent, wasted, for the most part). As for Niantic reverting the COVID changes this year, I'm not happy about the reversion at all. It's a spit in the face to anyone that has disabilities that still want to play the game, but cannot go out, either because of EDS, Lupus flares and/or so much more. I am a free to play player, and at this point, with how everything is going, I am seriously considering either A: quitting the game fully, or B: leaving my main account to die and making a different one, but not choosing a team, basically locking myself out of the feature that Niantic has chosen to limit, and just not participate at all in raiding. I had such high hopes and saw so much potential in Pokemon GO during the time where the COVID changes were implemented, but it all went downhill from there. I can no longer find any good reasons to recommend Pokemon GO to anyone, aside from using it to obtain Pokemon that are otherwise unobtainable through the other games (which is the only reason my current main account is still running). Sorry for being so negative, but it's just my honest thoughts and feelings surrounding the game. I hope all is well with you and your community and everything continues to prosper for everyone!

    • @EbiLMunkeY
      @EbiLMunkeY Рік тому

They should be few and far between. I don’t want to feel like I have to drive 30+ minutes to the city center every weekend just for these events to be playable, and I can’t imagine how it feels for players who have to drive more than an hour or two. Sad that Niantic has to force players together these days rather than let it happen organically.
This weekend was kind of fun but the second day I just drove around because the raids were way too far apart and walking so much in 40+ degrees is just hell. They should at least give players options.
And don’t you think if most players wanted to raid in groups in person more, then they would do it? Especially given the bonuses for in person raids. Says a lot about what people like and don’t like about the game, if you ask me.

I opened a PoGo account on 7/6/2016 the first day it was available in the U.S. but life got in the way of me enjoying it the way I wanted to. I went on hiatus until about 4yrs ago when I actually found a group of people who played it regularly, and so I downloaded the game and reapplied myself to it. Eventually, that group slowly started disappearing, and now they are all inactive altogether. I missed out on those early years when the hype for the game was almost around at every turn of a street corner. Now all my "friends" list is full of random people I befriended from apps where you post your # on and hope somebody decides to copy and paste it in PoGo. I can't do any raids in person because I very rarely have anybody to help with the higher tiers. It's to the point now that this game is a more chore than it is fun. With the price hikes and now remote raid pass limits and the cherry on the top of this 💩 Sundae is I can't get a shadow Mewtwo because I need to be at gym physically for them. I feel like what time and money I have put into this game was a total waste. I can't imagine what the people who have played this game constantly from 2016 til now feel like. I'll probably play til end of this month and just hang it up and find something else to put effort into.

Since its integrated with Pokemon Home, which in turn connects to my other games, it makes it easier to catch the mons [especially the legendary ones] and I can send them over into the game. I know the game isn't popping like it was back in 2016..but lets face it most of those who played were mostly going for nostalgia and only played up until Gen 1. Those who stuck around not only play PoGo but they are also playing the current games. So you can kinda see where it died off a bit. Niantic were happy to go against their moto during Covid for the survival of the game (when it suits them). They were happy to take everyone’s money, let everyone build up their teams, then take it away, ignore their player base in favour of their sponsors. I have a local community, but I have an OS community as well, and a large part of that community is hurting. The game has evolved in a great way, it was all inclusive. Players are their happiest when they are not excluded from playing and can chose where, when, for how long and who they want to play with. I managed to raid about as many Shadow Mewtwo over the entire weekend, I would normally do in a raid hour pre nerf. I played with old and new players, it was fun, but I missed my group, most of which were unable to raid Mewtwo. I lost most of my weekend. Did it for M2, but wouldn’t have done it for many others. Great podcast. Appreciate your support. I am tiring watching influencers who don’t have restrictions on raids, originally saying it’s sad times for pogo and then doing an about face saying it was the right decision.

Yep, I started in 2020. Wasn't able to play before that because I lived out of town. It was nice to use incense at home, if I couldn't get to town, on spotlight and com days. And it allowed me to raid. Flexability and accessibility - you'd think any company would be happy with these improvements. Even with accessiblity at home, PoGo got me out seeing parts of town and places I'd never been before. The idea that letting a person play from home makes them want to stay there is a crock! People who play PoGo WANT to go out, they just can't always.

Good video. Your closing comments are spot on. Pokémon Go can't be both for everyone and also a unique AR exercise game. They have to choose, and that choice might hurt the game one way or another.

I just started playing Pokémon go a year ago so it’s not a end to me but a beginning.

In 2020, with the 80M update, i could suddenly reach an gym out of house, and there where some local gyms on places with very low activity in general so i could do some solo stuff in Pokémon, but 5* raids where no longer an option until the remote update. The 80m change also fixed trouble with drifting on my old phone, used to have trouble getting into some raids with the 40m because my character kept running away and refused to get into the 40m range

Great piece, well put together. I wish there had been a reference to Ingress, the game Pokemon was built on. It’s still going strong.
