Absolutely brilliant series! I've always been amazed by the universe and how things work at this very basic level. Thank you, David Butler, for putting this in terms understandable to even a science novice like myself. Admittedly it's still blowing my mind. But this series definitely gives me a general understanding of how things work. I'm curious though, how we actually came to discover all these particles, how they interact, and the way the different fields are involved. What exact experiments were run, and viewing the results how exactly did we deduce the existence of the various articles. Also, one question: the graphic representing the Higgs field in this video, is it just a generic drawing of any field. Or is it a representation of the properties we expect it to have? If so, what does the 3D lines represent? Forgive my ignorance, David. This is just endlessly fascinating to me. Thanks for your amazing work and videos! :) Greetings from Norway

Superb video and explanation. One question: wasn't the discovery at CERN a result of a huge number of observations achieving a statistically significant conclusion about the existence of the Higgs boson, and not a report about seeing a single or one particular observation of the HB as seems to be stated in the video?

+Colin Christie In any collision, a Higgs Boson is either created or it is not. It is my understanding that the vast amount of data for each collision is analyzed and that one or more of the sets fit the creation of the Higgs Boson.

1/ Out on the perimeter, the force fields must be getting weaker and weaker, no? Is there an "eye of the storm" or hole at the centre?
2/ One can guess the wave nature of the forcefield from your 2-D diagrams i.e. the light and dark lines. It's circular or elliptical around the poles, according to the iron filings. Does our universe have poles? I guess it must. It would be strange if our Milky Wave, or local cluster, was the source; but not impossible, if we're the hub i.e. the universe is not isotropic.
3/ Virtual particles? Well, if you can believe in virtual particles, do you mind if I believe in a virtual God? There are postulated ghost fields as well, like the Fadeev-Popov ghosts. In order to tidy up the maths, we need something like the Pauli-Villers ghosts, don't we, though I'm probably getting confused. A virtual photon, if it exists, needs 3 polarisation states. It's going slower than a real photon, then.
I'll leave it there before I come up with an alternative to Higgs! Which is only to say the Standard Model is open to interpretation. It's a model, in other words. I'm not in a position to challenge it; but I can see how it could be done, without needing extra data. For example, the proton-to-electron mass ratio is unexplained, on current theories. There's a giant co-incidence here, to do with the weight of the neutron. In the same way, the rest mass of the Higgs boson must be minus 10^19 GeV + 126 GEV. Wow. Some fine-tuning, that.

I have no clue what you were saying, or trying to say here. You started with one thing, and by the time the next sentence came along, you were discussing an entirely different subject. Most of the stuff you were mentioning in your comment has nothing to do with the subject--at least not in way you've attached significance to it.
You should start by reading an entry level book to a particular area of physics, and then move on from there. Because the simplistic, completely visual way you're attempting to describe/understand physical phenomena has no bearing on actual physics.
You've gone from the visual of a magnetic field, to the standard model, to ghosts, to god, etc.... Physics doesn't work like that. You can't take a visual representation of something and then just assume a completely different area of science works that way.

These videos have a beauty that appears when something is done very well. The Brahms Violin Concerto used in this video is an example of that beauty. Watching Michael Jordan make what was previously thought to be an impossible shot would be another example of the beauty of expertise.

Wait till you learn that matter doesn't exist, that your 'self' is merely a persistent perceptual illusion you developed around twelve months old, and that the Vedas logically explain consciousness and reality far better than anything you'll ever encounter in a university of dogmatism. There's so much mind blowing information you'll never get in college.
Betcha you'll never learn that consciousness can literally be cut with a knife. Alien Hand Syndrome is an example of this behavior. Surgery can separate your consciousness into individualized parts, just as all 'living' things are individualized components of a singular consciousness.

I am amazed that this stuff is available for free to people. Wish that I was back at the start of my physics degree again, this kind of stuff is truly a treasure for people wanting to learn more about our scientific understanding/process. The part about CERN in particular: fantastically done, Ravel's Bolero for the dance of the protons prior to their final collision (but not at the top of a mountain :-), maybe not far from being under) was the icing on the cake. Mr. Butler, I am pasting here a comment I left as well on your HFAII fandom wiki. Just a small token of my appreciation in words.
I just wanted to share my appreciation of your content!
I am 26 years old and from Sweden. I have not (yet) studied any STEM field or any other field for that matter at university or college level. But I found my interest in quantum physics and cosmology late. Like 5 years ago by watching UA-cam videos from PBS Space Time, recorded university lectures and such.
I have watched so many different videos on UA-cam on subjects like relativity and quantum physics and out of the hundreds of GREAT channels from many different amazing science communicators here YOUR channel is definitely one of the best and most sincere / genuine feeling.
You are great at explaining, and your graphics are also very good. They get the message across clearly even though they are not like PBS space time level 3d stuff. Point is that the super produced graphics are clearly not necessary.
I have watched your video books several times and each time I have picked up a lot of new stuff and a deeper understanding for the subjects so I feel like I get something new every time still.
I love being able to look at stuff, like electronics for example, and have a deeper understanding of how it works. I guess that's what most of us that ended up on this website have in common: We love to understand how the universe works. How old is it? How fast is it? How small is it? Etc.
I have thought about this a little and what you do really contributes to humanity. You have gathered so much knowledge over your years, and now you share it forward, so that younger people can learn what you learnt, and as they get older - thanks to you and the other giants whose shoulders they stand upon - grow to become even more knowledgeable.
Without paying it forward, knowledge will be lost eventually.
If you have inspired hundreds of people to go into stem fields, lets say. That is a huge contribution to the world.
Butterfly effect? More like Butler effect hee-hee.
You have got a snowball started rolling downhill and it will only grow with more positive outcomes.
And the two best parts are: You don't seem THAT old I mean you have potentially decades left so I am hopeful we will get more awesome "chapters" of your series.
Maybe share some of your knowledge in computers? I'd love to learn more about IC chips and the physics behind making them work, and how they work.
I am sure you have loads of more things you could share.
All I am saying is that if you enjoy doing this, you clearly have people that appreciate your hard work. You could easily also open a patron account, I am sure you have considered this already. But it just seems to me that you deserve money for this service you do to humanity.
If the Kardashians get payed for what they do then so should you for what you do :-)
If wages were based on contribution to humanity/society we would certainly live in a different world... Interesting thought. But I digress.
...And secondly - this will outlive you. And hopefully me too. Storage is getting cheaper and I think UA-cam will be seen as a vault of history. Videos will not disappear for a long long time. Especially now that Google owns it. I saw a video from the 40s' explaining vacuum tubes, and one from the 60s' explaining integrated circuits. They were old, but what they explained has not changed and they were great.
So even though some parts of the cosmology will probably be outdated in 30 years, I am sure your videos will be able to teach people stuff for decades to come. Which in turn create people who can pass it on again...
And let's not forget you are great at updating your videos and keeping the channel up to date when big stuff has come out.
But then again, I watched the gravitational waves episode yesterday and was like the first time so surprised when in the end you said that we haven't seen any yet. The information in the video was still of course spot on with the only thing "wrong" today being you saying that we haven't.
This turned out pretty lengthy. But it still feels so inadequate. I don't feel like my gratitude can even be shown in a little comment.
Just know that you are spreading so much positivity with your what I have interpreted as your hobby project. It is amazing. Much respect and love and I hope you keep creating awesome content!! And if you don't, then what you have done so far has already taught more people than probably any university textbook you can find.
    THANK YOU!
    Kind regards
    Alfred Stahlin

With this, I propose the renaming of the higgs field into the Cottoneye Joe field.

This video is amazing, thank you sir for taking the time to make such an explanatory and thorough video on this subject. Most of the other physicists/videos on the subject don't even attempt to go anywhere near this much detail of how each particle that we know about in quantum mechanics function.

Watched the the whole series about elementary particles, thank you very much. Now I regret dropping out. Science is the truth and religion is crap.
Imagine all 7B people stop practicing religion and more emphasis on humanity, research, art, businesses etc.
For instance ask some ppl how big the universe is?

Why couldn’t you believe a god created all of this? It’s funny because the more i look into particle and quantum physics, I see more evidence of a god. Einstein believed in god. The fact that we exist, and the nature of our universe is so weird to me. Why does my conscience exist in this body and what makes me, me? If a different sperm cell would’ve slithered into my mother’s egg, who would’ve experienced life behind those eyes? When I die, will my conscience exist again? I think we all have spirits. And if there is a god, he’s nothing like what we would have thought. I believe god exists outside our universe. This video explains how the Higgs field gives particles mass, and permeates all of space. This really gives me a better understanding of what’s outside our universe; absolutely nothing. And if there is something outside, it’s not constrained to the physics of our universe. I think it’s more rational to think that something created our universe, than to think our universe came into existence out of nothing.

@@i8dapuszy There is a meaningful difference between a general higher power, some call it "God", and a biblical God as prophesized in the major religions of the world. Absolute atheism is clearly madness, maybe as mad as religious fanaticism, but at least atheists generally mind their own business. Alan Watts expands on this - you can watch it righhht here on UA-cam!

    • @andreiacsinia5088
      @andreiacsinia5088 4 роки тому

The existence of the universe is not dependent on your rational. You seem to be mixing science with paranormal or spiritual concepts, basically a broader definition of philosophy. The fact that Einstein believed in a god or not is really not relevant to the actual question of the existence of a god, which he did not endeavor to demonstrate. Einstein did not believe in many other things that were proven to be true. Does that disprove them? The fact that you BELIEVE that there is nothing outside our universe doesn't mean it IS so. A bacteria does not question its meaning for existence thus has no god thus our god did not create it. Spirituality is an archaic concept meant to give meaning to the unexplainable. There is always going to be unexplainable.

I have been searching for someone to explain the higgs field without using that ridiculous malasas explanation. I honestly believe people are smart enough to understand it if someone just explains it; but to be so patronising as to analogise mass, a force that resists acceleration, to friction, a force that resists velocity, is frustratingly insulting.
Thank you for giving me an accurate demonstration of what the higgs mechanism is and how it imparts mass.

Radium cannot turn into polonium by beta decay. Never, that is impossible. The bismuth isotope bismuth-10 turns into polonium-10 by beta decay. Usually radium isotopes turn into radon by alpha decay which turn into polonium by alpha decay. Radium-225 turns into actinium-225 by beta decay which turns into francium-221 by alpha decay.

Dear David Butler, I stumbled recently upon your two series "how small is it" and "how big is it" and find them absolutely fantastic, a delight. I am (perhaps like you) a professional scientist interested in all avenues of science. Your videos explanations of the very big and very small are second to none and can be followed by non scientists. I think you are significantly advancing the understanding of the big questions in science for the general audience.
