I test drove a new 94 with the 4 cyl and automatic. It was supposed to be a dog, but I thought it drove pretty well considering the low power. I would also recommend Ronald Finger”s channel. The fuel tank was a real issue for him. He kept the original engine, which you won’t be doing, but he’s got a lot of good tips for finding and repairing parts.
I may end up keeping the original engine in there and adding a tiny bit of boost to it. It's looking like a big money pit if I try retrofitting anything else in there. The only other option I would do is another four-cylinder Honda engine or an ecotec turbo or something like that so it's still nice and light. The bigger engines just make that engine compartment so tight you can't work on it and adds weight
My first car when I was 17 was an 84 fiero with the 4cylinder and a 4speed manual. Looked identical to the one you have. Was a cool car, never got over the speakers in the headrests!
Definitely go for the Honda Donor. I wouldnt even go crazy. I think the original Fiero had 105hp to 135hp with the V6. A regular Honda engine makes well into the high 100s without any troubles and will last forever. I remember as a teen in the 90s when these things were going for 700 for the SE 4 cylinders and the GT V6 would go for a WHOPPING 1000-1500.
Yeah I want to look into what kind of electronics I have to get off the donor car and wiring to do the job but that would be an awesome transplant. Yep I remember when these things were almost being given away
Id say they rolled it back. Thats alot of carpet wear for 30k miles. Wonder if it was 130k and they rolled the 1 to a zero? Oh well it still looks nice and looking forward to see what you do with it!
It does look like a lot of wear, it doesn't make sense is the paperwork and the stickers on the windshield, also inside the valve cover spotless not even a speck of sludge
Sad thing is history reports are not always correct. The cable could have been removed for x miles. Other than small nit pick things, still looks like a fun project.

Speedo cable for mileage still attached? Other than that it looks good. There is a tuber who partially restored a red one of these. I'm sure it will be lots of fun tinkering with it. Cheers
Had one electrical problems known for it over heating problems. Recalls for fire oil would leak on exhaust manifold.Recall was to put a heat shield on it.Real problem was water lines from front to back are to small in traffic over heat. Brake head bolts or blow gasket from over heating oil leak on exhaust manifold and catch fire.What ever motor you run take a look at coolant lines from front to back. Rubber hoses coming off radiator were normal size reducing down as it hits metal pipe under the car.Good luck have fun like driving a big go cart in the corners fun to drive.
My first thought would be the Honda K. The boostedboiz on UA-cam swap that into everything. I wonder if the cobalt ss engines would bolt up? I remember at one point they were supercharged and maybe switched to turbo from factory? I wonder if the Gm stuff will bolt up?
Yeah the K series would be a nice light swap, getting all the electronics and the wiring would probably be the hardest part. It has a standard GM bellhousing that will bolt up to their 350s etc from what I'm told
IF the 5-spd is of the same stoutness as the 5-spd used in the S10 2.8 V6, then it can with stand a mild SBC power level. My buddy had a 350 V8 in his '86 S10 Blazer. The only weakness he had with it was that 5th gear kept going away. What we found was that when his wife had been hit from behind it had bent the frame just enough to put too much lateral pressure on things in the tranny. But the trans did function fine with the power of a V8. That said, I'd consider the 3.8 V6 which Buick used in the Grand National. It was basically a V8 with two cylinders lopped off and was very responsive to boosting. And, Buick/Olds/Pontiac family of engines were very compatible.
It's a totally different motor, I can't remember what car they took to driveline out of is like a citation or something that was a front wheel drive and it just moved everything to the back so it's transaxle
Could the odometer be actually broken? Misalignment could be a result of something damaged internally, and paperwork/inspection is just what was showing when they wrote it down. Inspection showing 37115, and odometer now reading 37123 could be the result of parts still turning in the odometer and dragging, occasionally flipping a mile or two... lol Just a theory!
I never considered that, that could explain a lot with the paperwork registration inspection and Carfax. The VIN report comes back estimating the mileage should be at 52,000 so that could explain it all
Thanks, me too! A buddy of mine bought the fiero GT brand new in '88 and that thing was sweet. He owned it up until about 3 years ago he lives in California and it just needed so much work he got rid of it for a few hundred dollars. I was so pissed off I wish I could have gotten that from him

Yeah I've heard good and bad, the other red fiero GT I was looking at has 220,000 miles and he said still runs good, newer motor he claims. But who knows. I'm still talking with him on it, may end up with that too lol.
Looks low mileage with the lack of rust from back east. If I recall correctly that 5 speed transaxle is the Isuzu. They do ok but they are not as stout as the Getrag from the 2.8 v6 car and it was recommended to swap them with the engine, even the V6. Your mileage may very though as there have been some swaps using the Caddy 4.9V8/Isuzu, 1st gear is a bit short though. If I ever did a Fiero again I would go with a Volvo T5/6speed for fun. If you want easy and a fun car the Series 2 3800 supercharged with the 4t65 trans, very well documented and Im sure there are still parts being made for the swap.
Yeah that's what babbles me about the mileage. I did have a mechanic friend verified at that is a city registration which would mean more wear on the pedals. I also forgot to mention that I ran a VIN report and the mileage is estimated at 52,000 so being rust-free for up in this area and all the paperwork it may have that low mileage.

Yeah definitely looks tired and 38,000. The thing that's getting me is the last time it was inspected in New York it shows that low mileage so New York has to be inspected every year could they have put that many miles on in a year and then who would buy the rolling it back if it had only another 20,000 on it?

Ya I'm thinking same in engine if I can find a donor car, my buddy Brian is a mechanic and he looked it over, said registration is from city, and judging by interior reg, inspection and paperwork he'd say it's accurate mileage
I think the 5spd transverse getrags have something like a 200hp design limit so no modern v6's will work. Also a v6 isn't fun to service. edit also someone would had to have rid the brake and clutch to wear them out that bad in 37k.
I was thinking that myself with the five-speed, yeah they are kind of worn aren't they for that mileage Just a registration and inspection and other paperwork in the car just throw me off

@@MotoCheez yeah actually the 4.9 swap I’m doing weighs overall less than the stock v6 in it. Aluminum block on the 4.9. A popular swap is the stock v6-or a 3400 LA1 engine (from like the grand am gts) or the 3800 series engines. All same bell housing
I saw that video, that'd be a cool project but with all the hills I have around here I don't think it would be to practical unless I can get something near 50 horsepower

100% that odometer was rolled back. The numbers are uneven height. If you get a odometer out of a junk yard to play with you'll learn a lot about this telltale sign.
I've played with the odometers before, lol. I've also seen ones not tampered with look like that. I just don't know how they could have put that many miles on and not have it show up on a car fax. All papers and Carfax show nothing after 91
That's on the top of the list, I just keep thinking maybe I should just throw that 2.54 cylinder back in it and give it a little boost... Easiest way. That ending compartment is so tight I don't know how people get the 3.8 in there and work on them
That mileage averages like two to three years of driving do those pedals look like two to three years of usage? It's always possible there is more were and tear with a stick shift. Could had kids play driving wearing out the pedals. Check to see if it's a legit inspection it should have perforated edges.
@sacongo1624 Yeah I know what you mean. Yes it's definitely a legit inspection and registration I didn't zoom in on a registration but it's on the hood of the car with all the paperwork

I was thinking that myself with the five-speed, yeah they are kind of worn aren't they for that mileage Just a registration and inspection and other paperwork in the car just throw me off
Lots of options-wiring is always the concern and different needs. Most 4 cyl options always result in the same amount of work as a v6 or v8. Depends on your crazy level😂
I just worry about how tight the v8's going to be in there to do any kind of maintenance on it and the weight
@jasonstring9156 I'd love to do a 3.8 but I need a donor car for the computer and the wiring don't I? I'm still learning so bear with me
@@MotoCheez yes best to find a running donor car. Did that for my caddy swap
@jasonstring9156 I figured
4bt swap !!!
Oh man a diesel would probably snap that transmission in half. Lol
Just have to go easy lol but definitely would turn heads at a show !!!
That exhaust damage is likely from the car being picked up by a forklift. See it at auctions all the time.
Was purchased at an estate sale.
3.8 swap or 4.3
You should put a Predator 670 in it. Robot Cantina on UA-cam put one in an old Renault.
I saw that video, that'd be a cool project but with all the hills I have around here I don't think it would be to practical unless I can get something near 50 horsepower
Yo! Probably 2nd!!
I'm seeing your 1st!
Even when I doubt myself!!!!!
Free keytag if you want one
2.4 ecotec is the way to go. Or a supercharged 2.0 ecotec out of a cobalt ss.
They would be nice light high power engines but I'd probably need a full donor card to get the computer and wiring harness etc out of it
@@MotoCheez there is a decent amount of aftermarket available for the ecotec. You can get stand alone harnesses and ECU. It was also used in the Polaris slingshot.
@kclaptraffic that'd be a pretty badass transplant
All papers and Carfax show nothing after 91
You can put a sbc or gen2 lt1 or 4 will bolt in. Now your transaxle sky is the limit
It'll explode that 5 speed!
@@MotoCheez True. You can use a 5 speed from a ponxho G6
@kevinkehlet1543 oh yeah?
As there are kits for the fwd LS4 driveline
@kevinkehlet1543 ahh
Gm 3800 v-6 swap.
That's on the top of the list, I just keep thinking maybe I should just throw that 2.54 cylinder back in it and give it a little boost... Easiest way. That ending compartment is so tight I don't know how people get the 3.8 in there and work on them
The 90’s chevy lumina z34 I believe had a peppy version of the 2.8 v6 that was an oem engine in the fiero.
I think that's more miles than it actually says on the speedometer
Not so sure, had a few mechanics I know check the whole thing out. they say it may be actual
K series would more of a headache then what's its worth
Why you say that? 160 plus HP simple design Honda you mean the parts etc?
Cheesy, you must be a glutton for punishment taking on a project like this. 🤣
I know I know, so I think I might end up just throwing iron duke four-cylinder back in it and give it a tiny bit of boost
Put a Cobalt SS engine in it.
Put a harbor freight motor in there.
Haha, would be close to stock horsepower then too 😁
I watch robotcantina to much haha
@eiknarf9993 I saw those!
147,000 by the pedals
But how can we explain the inspection sticker? And the registration... Plus there's no sludge at all underneath that valve cover It's spotless
That mileage averages like two to three years of driving do those pedals look like two to three years of usage? It's always possible there is more were and tear with a stick shift. Could had kids play driving wearing out the pedals. Check to see if it's a legit inspection it should have perforated edges.
Another possibility Speedo died? check to see if it still works.
@sacongo1624 Yeah I know what you mean. Yes it's definitely a legit inspection and registration I didn't zoom in on a registration but it's on the hood of the car with all the paperwork
@sacongo1624 good idea
Looks like 137k
It is a city registration, but it does look like a lot of wear on those pedals. I forgot to mention there's a VIN check run on the car and that estimates 52,000 miles
Time to dig a hole in the back yard and bury it.
😂🤣
Put a R1 engine in it
Thought about a liter bike engine...
@@MotoCheez whichever you decide it will be fun watching
WALK AWAY ~~~~~~
NO!
Ls swap it! Lol
Believe me I'd love to do that!!
Beep
Meep
Cheesy…..it has 2 to many wheels
🤣😁👍 If you put a big enough horsepower motor and it'll be on two wheels soon!
LS swap? LOLOLOL
Put a newer honda 4 cylinder in it.
It's either that or I'm going to go with the 3800 supercharged GPX engine
@@MotoCheez but beware of putting too much weight on the back. Of course, whatever is more cost effective. Can’t wait to see the progress.
@silkysmooth7900 definitely want to keep the weight down,
3800SC series Il 445 lbs.
2.8/3.4 L weighs about 348
First
4th!... they fast in here
