What no one tells you about these big parabolic lights is in most modern houses the ceilings aren’t tall enough to allow you to get good angles if you’re not sat down. The flat led panels are much more useful for home studios.

You're absolutely right, and my ceiling in the loft is quite low too

All you need are three small lights with their 4.5inch reflector and one plastic translucent diffuser in front, 3 super flimsy light stands, classic Rembrandt 3lights setup. Thanks to Markuspix he is the best on UA-cam about budget lighting and audio stuff!

I found that a lantern is a decent compromise with low ceilings, depending on the shot.

I was sceptical until the very last set up. That did seem very good. Like you, I've never used lights and only every used natural light adjusting what I do around it rather than adjusting a light, like this, around what I want to do. Food for thought!

I still have 2 Bowens Wafer softboxs fitted with both diffusers, which I bought at Calumet Bristol in 1991, still working fine, beautiful light for flash photography. I was surprised they are still available, B&H are selling them for over $600 each.
    Great vid, thanks Gordon.

Lighting is tough! Thanks for this great demo. I’ve always enjoyed the natural lighting of your videos but understand that your schedule and being at the mercy of the sun is not the most ideal setup.
It’s interesting to watch how many channels here had refined their lighting ages ago while many personalities on classic television (eg guest who appear on shows) struggling to get flattering light for video calls once the pandemic arrived.

Yes, you'd think celebrities would have learned some more about lighting and styling, but there are some shocking presentations. Audio too.

I've had this light since the pandemic and I honestly never looked back. It's fanless, built like a tank but still fairly light to carry. I use it with a Godox P90 modifier and I've also bought the 120cm one. I used this light for ZOOM calls, now livestreaming weekly and I keep it about 70cm away, angled from above and the side, 45 dergrees-ish and when someone commented that you'd get by with smaller lights, no parabolic softboxes... I get all that, and my room is quite high. but I'd managed to use this in a smaller room as well, just because I want the softer light and it's close to me. Why 90or 120cm? I'm playing guitar in my livestreams and it's a fantastic fall-off from my headshot to the shoulders and then lower. Then the light matt by Intellitech (LC-120) takes over and is used for my instrument and hands. I'm really happy with the results since I'm broadcasting with three cameras at the same time (headshot, left - right hand) and all lighting is nice and even with the big softbox completed with the LC120. 'Nough bragging but hey, this light is amazing in every way.

Enjoyed the video Gordon. I use the grid on my studio light to give a moody look, but I started with a dark background - the grid just stops the light influencing the background. I like the look of the parabolic soft box - I would be interested to see how quick it is to set up.

    • @cameralabs

I have a very large diffuse light from IKEA* hanging high in the middle of the room: the outer part is made of translucent, semi-stiff plastic that fits together like a globe. When filming by the bar table with script on table out of sight this provides good general lighting. I bought an LED panel from Jupio 122 diodes that I mounted on the table about the same distance away as the ceiling light but lower and at an angle towards me. At 10-20% power it fills in a bit the shadows on the shaded side of my face and softens up the shadow from the ceiling lamp. Usually that is it.
If I feel like adding color I have four small Ulanzu RGB lights that I can face the wall behind me.
When I am sitting in the other part of the office on zoom or so I have two small lights to my sides, one is a tiny godox and one a tiny one from newer. Then the ceiling light illuminates the books and shelves behind me.
Not professional but much better result than some. This is all the result of the pandemic and lecturing to university students from home with two modes: stand and gesture with power point on a screen beside me, sit at the desk and be a talking head . A very different use case than most "content creators" I suspect ......
*Discontinued, unfortunately, at least where I live.

I have been hesitant to recommend godox video lights recently because of reliability issues that I and other shooters have noticed. I had a VL 300 that died in it's first shoot, and I've heard of at least two other units that have died similarly too soon. Someone else I was talking to had 3 ML60s and two of them died right after the warranty period. This might be isolated to these units/models, but these experiences have made me hesitant to recommend godox video lights. Nanlite is my current recommendation due to their similar price point and excellent reliability.

Stick with my AD 200 and AD 400. LED not there yet. One need to turn up the power to freeze people but at the cost of eye strain. good for products and that's all i can say Good video Gordan. And the price is nuts nearly 600 bucks in US and over 500 pounds in the uk you can get 2 Ad 200 for that price and more power plus smaller form factor.

Between having worked as a lighting technician in live theatre and now doing flash photography with a small travel bag of gear, I can appreciate a single light setup for just about all occasions. If I had a preference in this video, I actually liked the look of the modifier with the single diffuser lighting you from a diagonal. It has a sense of dimension and intimacy that I think is missing from a lot of UA-cam presenter’s setups, without it looking too contrast-y or overly dramatic. Regardless of the lighting setup you land on, I’m thankful to you for sharing with us, and I look forward to more not-necessarily-camera-related reviews. Cheers!

Out of curiosity, can I ask how tedious it may be to set up and take down this parabolic reflector?
For instance, I’ve heard that some parabolic reflectors have a whole bunch of rods that you have to fit into little holes and that sort of thing-does your reflector have any of that sort of nonsense?

    • @cameralabs
      @cameralabs  2 роки тому +1

This one is a 'quick' model, so no holes to navigate. You do need to click each spoke into place, so it'll take a couple of mins, but it's not too bad. That said, I leave mine assembled as techie furniture!
