Personally, I find it intriguing in a psychological way. A person relies his eyes to see everything, some people don't know what it's like to be blind. This really scares me how the sense of sight can really affect a person, to the point where they give in to their fears and slowly gving in to their insanity. Nice Review, very deep.
I have the feeling the "irredeemably dark" version had Finn dying several times, maybe even living his whole life only to have it all reset and made pointless, like the bitter gut punch part of "Puhoy" on repeat to really make life feel pointless if not reflected upon.
0:44 I honestly don't like the stigma of treating Dungeon Train like it was a bad experience and a bad moral, the episode showed that things we view as addictive can and for many ARE apart of the healing process and that the true strength is knowing when to stop and move forward again, like Finn did which I know as a deliberate metaphor and really should not be looked at as tale of harmful addiction and validation that all kinds are always bad and you should be stronger then that, when addiction is like the hug we give to our selves when were going through a rough patch in life and when its time to move forward, we hopefully have had enough time to want to pick the pieces back up and start over again.
This episode is my all time favourite adventure time episode. (This Jake the Brick) it's so relatable! And makes you feel something.... Something real!!!! So good.
I have a theory that Finn was in the mirror world dimension.... Think about it, when he closed his eyes, the world was the same, but not the same. That's why when he went to the opposite location, and into the opposite mirror temple , this cause him to break the spell. He actually see's the mirror world, and it even looked similar to BMO's mirror world... Not only this, BMO says "Something is different" over Finn's voice, and I don't think that was coincidental... This was defiantly a mirror world spell that cave had, its clear.
I really enjoyed the episode's pacing, tone, and idea. But it also seemed full of ideas that never materialized or references that didn't amount to much - like the snowman/cave assets, or the reference to dungeon train/frame princess. At times it felt like symbolism/darkness for the sake of it, unless I'm just confused. At least when the episode got passed the setup (act 1 I guess), I really did enjoy it, especially Finn's voyage scene. It was entertaining regardless, but I agree that I would love to see the original pitch for the episode. Perhaps your upcoming analysis will reveal something I haven't considered though. I will be re-watching it again for things I missed, so that's a good sign of a really well done episode.
I really liked this episode but I noticed something through it. Jake is kind of a jerk to finn sometimes. like how in this episode finn kept trying to keep his eyes closed til he figured out how to escape the cave for good and Jake kept opening his eyes. or when finn got turned into a foot and Jake wouldn't help. Jake seems to be jerkish to finn sometimes just cause and it kinda bugs me
Actually, it ended up helping him. Without Jake and BMO constantly waking him, he never would've gone out on his own, and never would've beaten the dungeon
There's an episode that they defeat a wizard with a magic wand that makes wishes come true, and they decide to burry it underground, but Finn was having a hard time fighting the wizard while Jake later defeated him easly and sat in a beach chair watching Finn dig a giant hole for hours while he bragged that he could dig that hole in seconds
This episode was incredibly trippy to me as I watched it. I wasn't exactly getting it at first. From what I get, I feel like it was supposed to be some sort of incredibly difficult physical and mental dungeon. From having to figure out how to get through that door at first, to finn going through almost a non physical state to make his way out the dungeon yet have to keep his eyes clothes. I'm not sure exactly what it was about still. One thing that highly confused me is the reverse rock snowman you see in the middle of the chamber. I don't get that. Was it a symbol for don't look at things from a normal angle, look at them differently?
+ThePeoplesGamer1 The reverse snowman was just like those puzzles with an obvious solution in the middle of a dungeon. There's no symbolism there. It's just meant to throw you off.
If the upside-down snowman was a total red herring or the actual simple answer to unlock the hatch, we may never know! I do discuss the snowman in my upcoming explanatory analysis video though - or at least how I think it ties into a couple of the allegories I think this episode contained. If you're confused but are continuing to think about the episode, for sure keep those thoughts until I get the follow-up video out (would love to have it done tomorrow but that's not possible, but Thursday on the other hand seems highly plausible). We may just become a crapton more confused together, or you may think my ideas are crazy, or perhaps you can add to them, or who knows what other possibilities will arise, haha. Either way, I'm actually quite happy with how the content of my analysis came out, and I had an absolute blast writing it - first time I've done proper literary analysis on an abstract work to this level since I was back in college.
+ThePeoplesGamer1 I believe the upside down snowman was representation of Mirror world... The whole cave had a spell that Finn was under the second the door closed.. I believe this was in fact the mirror dimension, which is why that jake and BMO didn't remember anything that was happening whenever Finn opened his eyes and reset the spell.... This is why he literally had to close his eyes, activating the door so he could proceed to the Alternate version of the cave which broke the spell, and once there he could truly see the real mirror world, when he couldn't before.
Uncivilized Elk, I love your Adventure Time reviews! (Especially your newer ones!) I'm so glad that I finally found a UA-camr who can see past the "but, it's a cartoon..." mind set, and really take in the depth that Adventure Time has to offer its viewers. --Tiffany
Love this review! Your videos are keeping me updated while I can't watch any AT right now. Major respect for the Marble Hornets reference: It had a similar impact on me. The scariest moments were when they would not know what happened (and when Slender man showed up, but they built that up well). I'll put off seeing your analysis video until I see The Hall of Egress.
Like the MH the hero face such grim fate but at the same this episode really showed How strong Finn is mentally. Imagine If this trial was given to any kids at his age in any high school in this generation. Finn is a hero and because of this dark and grim trials we see the light which is the hero Finn
A seemingly impossible maze which psychologically tortures the protagonist, and in which the only way out is subversive and a very long journey? Heaven Sent is definitely inspired. The addition of the time-skips and The Veil help make it more SciFiey.
This episode reminds me of an episode from voltron, the journey within, were the paladins find them selves lost in space with only each other. Finn handled the lost of hope better then the paladins. They tried to keep control and lost it. I think this is because they aren't completely use to the weirdness of their overall situation while Finn was born into the weirdness of his world.
I also got MH vibes from it! so I love this ep even more! (but I'm gonna have to distrace myself from thinking about it while waiting to fall asleep this evening, 'cause wow, these mental puzzles are messed up) great revieuw!
+Seli Glad to know I'm not the only Marble Hornets fan who is heavily into Adventure Time! I'm still amazed how a small group of people can make hours of blurry footage of landscapes and buildings so damn mesmerizing.
Uncivilized Elk I know right! I was sad I discovered MH so late tho, didn't stop me to watch it all in three nights they just knew how to keep the mistery and charachters in balance my sad Clear Lakes hasn't got the same vibe :C

yeah . finn only handled it because he really thought it out , but in the original writer's one , I think it will show how someone will really react in a cave . just like finn was talking about how to get out . but if it was a real person , he would lose he's sanity . thats why this episode showed that Finn is really put to the mental test , that he can really think even to leave he's loved ones for hes true "egress"
I hate trippy episodes. What was happening? Why was it happening? How does it make sense? Why does that temple exist? What was going through the writer's head? Why do these kinds of episodes exist?
I think the best analysis video about "The Hall of Egress" is Uncivilized Elk's "The Meaning of Finn's Journey in "The Hall of Egress" (Adventure Time)". ua-cam.com/video/PnK5B49KKvo/v-deo.html This guy is probably the best person to help you undertand Adventure Time. Check it out if you want, but be careful for some spoiler, he already review the latest episode of AT. Don't think Finn and Huntress Wizard will end up together, you said? That's what I thought at first......
Idk, I hated it. It's just another episode where the answer is smack dab in Finn's face but he overlooks it and makes things a hella lot more difficult and tedious for himself than he could have. WHOMP WHOMP

+Brosky Sure, but remember Another Way? Finn always does things "His Way"

I thought that too, but know i think it's just a trick to make us think it's the easy way out.
I think that would have worked as well. Its obvious to us the audience...
But not to finn.
Theres thematic reasons to think it would have worked, imo.
I almost cried when Finn finally got out of the dungeon
