I enjoyed his Flip Wilson’s show when I was a little kid. He made every age laugh. If I’m honest, his comedy could have been like Loony Toons, funny for all with extra humor for adults. I’d like to see one of those episodes again.

My family never missed it! My parents loved comedy and had lots of LPs of the best, like Flip, Phyllis Diller, Bob Newhart, Bill Cosby (hey, he was really funny back in the 60s).
Flip's character, Geraldine, was my favorite. "The DEVIL made me buy that dress!"

I loved me some Flip Wilson! in 1969 I bought the album The Devil Made Me Buy This Dress & memorized the whole thing. Reverend Leroy of the church of what's happening now. when you went to Leroy's place he didn't talk about what happened in the past or the future. when you went to Leroy's place you heard what's happening NOW.
The whole album was worth my babysitting money. what a treasure that was!

Flip Wilson starred in the second vignette in the very first episode of Love American Style in 1969. It was a terrific segment, very well-written and -acted, took place in a specifically African-American context, and everyone in the large cast was African-American. When I watch it today, I'm reminded of two things: what a great performer Flip Wilson was (his role here is understated, more light-drama than knee-slapping comedy, and he nails it), and how sure it seemed in the 70s that racial division was finally being torn down and America would be a nation of neighbors going forward.

This segment got me started for real on Johnny. My mom watched him during his last few years while I was around, but I didn’t become a fan until the VHS compilations came out. My grandad got them all and I watched them about a thousand times each easily. Every time I’d go to my grandparents house I’d play through all of them. Never realized until now how much of this bit is embedded perfectly into memory. The “She gets offended!” portion in particular is just burned in perfectly.

Two things: 1) Joan Rivers commented that when she met Flip backstage on the Ed Sullivan Show, she was amazed at how relaxed he was before going onstage. 2) Did anyone else notice veteran comedian Myron Cohen laughing as well?

Try to find a black comedian that can laugh at themselves. Which is what it takes to tell that joke. The problem with wokenness is it strangles comedy to death.

Get away with what exactly? What an ignorant take. Have you ever watched a modern comedy special on Netflix? Chapelle is one of Flip’s spiritual successors and is as good, if not better, than this. Please stop spewing this phony nostalgia crap; comedy is alive and well.

Flip Wilson. What a brilliant comic! I get irritated at UA-cam sometimes, but I have to admit they’re helping keep alive the memory of these geniuses of the performing arts; especially those like Wilson who did most of their work for TV.

Hey today's comedians, just goes to show you that you don't need lewd and swear words to be funny. Another prime example for a clean and funny act is Rodney Dangerfield.

I grew up watching The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and The Ed Sullivan Show. My parents let me watch both because I was such a huge fan of all the wonderful variety of comedians those shows featured, many of whom made their national debuts on those shows. So, I saw a number of firsts, including the debut of Flip Wilson here and Richard Pryor's debut on The Ed Sullivan Show. Flip is demonstrating his particular mastery of the art of storytelling comedy. Ironically, Myron Cohen, who was also a guest on this particular show featuring Flip, was another master of the storytelling form of comedy. Some other great masters of the storytelling form of comedy on those programs were Mel Brooks, Buddy Hackett, and Walter Matthau. And trust me, though it looks easy, it isn't. Learning the stories well enough to tell them is only a tiny part. It's how the stories are told, as well as the stories themselves. There's the verbal component and how the story builds, but also the various vocal characterizations, the physical component, the timing, the way the punch line is delivered, and much more. Flip's story here is like a work of art that you can return to time and again, just like seeing a favorite painting or listening to a piece of music that you enjoy repeatedly over your lifetime.
