I enjoyed his Flip Wilson’s show when I was a little kid. He made every age laugh. If I’m honest, his comedy could have been like Loony Toons, funny for all with extra humor for adults. I’d like to see one of those episodes again.

Geraldine was shining through with that "devil made me do it" attitude. Flip Wilson was on top of the world that night, just look at the reaction he got from Johnny and his guests. Just brilliant!
Johnny was right. When Flip told a story, you just didn't know where he was going, but rest assured you had fun all the way to end of the ride. rip Flip and thanks for the laughs.
Flip Wilson starred in the second vignette in the very first episode of Love American Style in 1969. It was a terrific segment, very well-written and -acted, took place in a specifically African-American context, and everyone in the large cast was African-American. When I watch it today, I'm reminded of two things: what a great performer Flip Wilson was (his role here is understated, more light-drama than knee-slapping comedy, and he nails it), and how sure it seemed in the 70s that racial division was finally being torn down and America would be a nation of neighbors going forward.
So glad I got to see “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson” LIVE and in person. He was my favorite late night talk show host. And Flip Wilson is probably the most underrated comedian of all time. Most of the generation today likely never heard of him.
Went to LA with a friend once and decided to go see the Tonight Show live. It was so easy -- we actually picked which night we wanted to go by checking the TV Guide! (We chose the night that Laurie Anderson was the musical guest.) Unfortunately Jay Leno was guest-hosting all that week -- you definitely beat the odds by catching Johnny behind the desk!
This segment got me started for real on Johnny. My mom watched him during his last few years while I was around, but I didn’t become a fan until the VHS compilations came out. My grandad got them all and I watched them about a thousand times each easily. Every time I’d go to my grandparents house I’d play through all of them. Never realized until now how much of this bit is embedded perfectly into memory. The “She gets offended!” portion in particular is just burned in perfectly.
Now THAT’S why they call it a “punch line”. You can see it keeps coming back on Johnny… pummeling him about the head and shoulders repeatedly. Flip planted a picture in Johnny’s mind and he just couldn’t run away from it. Great joke from a comedy legend.
You are not alone!! Can you imagine a comedian doing that joke today...especially a black comedian? We never missed a Flip Wilson show and his color wasn't an issue...he was a funny talented man...period. I'm 67 and would love to go back to the days when American's laughed!!
I couldn't do what I do for a living today without Flip. Robin Williams Scottish golf bit and this one are two jokes that I could watch over and over and still laugh every time.
Flip was a hilarious treasure! I listened to the album on which this joke was made legendary almost until the groove was through the other side of the LP. The story about The Berry is another amazing Flip creation.
He crafted every word in these stories so carefully, and told them so beautifully. You really get involved in the story, then the punchline sends you over the bend! And I love how he delivers that last line and the room collapses in laughter ... he strolls over and lays a handshake on Johnny and leaves.
I grew up watching the last few years of Carson’s time on the Tonight Show. I’ve seen hundreds of episodes. But I’ve never seen Johnny Carson laugh quite like that before. It looks like one of those incredibly rare jokes that stays with you forever. One that you happen to remember ten years later, and start laughing all over again. Flip Wilson had an undeniable streak of brilliance, and Carson was just one of a kind.
I remember watching the Flip Wilson show. He influenced a generation with "The Devil Made Me Do It" to "Here Comes the Judge " and Geraldine! Best part it was good clean comedy. Thanks Flip for the good times!
Here Come the Judge was Sammy Davis Jr on Laugh-In. I didn't know Flip did it also. The court's in session. The court's in session. Now here comes the judge. Here comes the judge. @@nancydemoss608 Pigmeat Markham originated it. After Sammy made it a standard on Laugh In, Pigmeat got to perform it on Carson. You can see it here on UA-cam.
Flip had excellent delivery , inflection and timing to make a clean joke hilarious. His observational embellishments like the guy selling the 25 cent sandwich for a buck fifty added hilarity to the scene he was describing . You could imagine it all happening in detail .
One of my fondest memories is watching the Flip Wilson show on Thursday nights on CBS with my parents and sisters. My absolute favorite was Geraldine. “What you see is what you get!” He was a comedic genius and a trail blazer. There would be no Chris Rock, Richard Pryor or Eddie Murphy if it were not for Flip. I grew up watching The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and The Ed Sullivan Show. So, I saw a number of firsts, including the debut of Flip Wilson here and Richard Pryor's debut on The Ed Sullivan Show. Flip is demonstrating his particular mastery of the art of storytelling comedy. Ironically, Myron Cohen, who was also a guest on this particular show featuring Flip, was another master of the storytelling form of comedy. Some other great masters of the storytelling form of comedy on those programs were Mel Brooks, Buddy Hackett, and Walter Matthau. And trust me, though it looks easy, it isn't.
