What happens when you give a DeLorean a BUNCH of power? Nick is a man with his priorities in order. Having owned just about every analog supercar out there, he wanted to do something Delorean enthusiasts have always dreamed of, but never succeeded at: making a Delorean that drives as good as it looks. Styled by the legendary Giorgetto Giugiaro and platform-shared with early Lotuses, the Delorean had promise. But a poorly constructed chassis, underwhelming engine, wonky driver inputs, and play-doh brakes have made it more of a looker than a driver. Worse, because of very specific issues with how the cars were built, modifying them takes far more trouble than it's typically worth. But when Nick turned to Steve Maxwell, a legendary San Diego Ferrari tuner and fabricator, to fix nearly every problem the Delorean had with virtually an open checkbook, the pair created far and away the best driving Delorean ever constructed.

back in the 2000s, the one thing that made the hyun Tib stand out against all of the fwd japanese sports compacts was it's v6 sound. The fat gen Mitsu eclipse v6 with intake/exhaust sounded like a van in comparison. The hyundai 2.7 v6, an aftermarket intake and a borla or equiv exhausts they sounded almost exotic, moreso cammed. I had an Acura RSX type-S, and the average normie DGAF about my car after my friend with a tibby one rocked up, even if I could pull him.
The v6 tibs that were cammed revved to 8k like my rsx, would annihilate me, luckily only encountered one on drag nights back when it was called Infineon.

    • @joeleonard9965
      @joeleonard9965 2 роки тому +15

This is an bit complicated because Ford intentionally put severely unequal length headers on their ecoboost V6s in order to make them muffled and quiet. The true way to make a V6 sound the best it can is 6 to 1 headers into a single merge collector. The only production cars I've seen with anything closee to this is the Evora GT.

Ford actually made that design choice on purpose using unequal length exhaust manifolds makes it easier to reduce any exhaust resonance and therefore it reduces overall vehicle nvh, imagine an f150 towing with an equal length exhaust that sounds like a Nissan VQ, it would get annoying quick.

The Delorean has one of the worst front suspension designs I have ever seen. The upper control arm is a wishbone and is fine. The lower control arm is located with one joint at the frame and relies on the swaybar to otherwise locate it. Multiple problems with this include the sway bar being super soft, the bushings being too soft to keep the swaybar from moving around too much, and the control arm is an open channel, made with thin metal. The main upgrades are to get better bushings for the swaybar, box the control arm, and add additional brackets to triangulate the whole mess.
This video shows exactly how bad of a design this is:
      ua-cam.com/video/CMHO4Aydk04/v-deo.html
I've been working on my friend's Delorean and it's astounding how poorly engineered the car was. The main ground for the fuse/relay box is like 10 gauge, grounded to the frame. Just ridiculously undersized and the frame isn't a lot of metal and really serves as a poor thing to ground to. I own a Yugo which is better put together/designed in about every way imaginable.

and it got so bad that the dealer when he brought it to the states stopped honoring the waranty and when he finally got rid of it was starting to leak oil when it got replaced by a much better better car, a 1972 Ford LTD, a beautiful car in its own right, which ran like a champ and I think is still around to this day as I found a lookalike of it at a local garage
while as a kid riding my bike down to a local parking lot yard for old cars from a guy named Mr Switch, I found a bizzarly Rusty white porsche 914 sitting in the back
and in reading up on it, it wasnt until about 1972/1973, the same year as the LTD that they finally got the thing sorted with that gear linkage, they moved the fuel pump to fix the two part vapor lock issue that stranded my dad on both sides of the atlantic with it to the front, and upgraded and uprated the motors,
hence why I now have the 3 to 5 year rule, always wait 3 to 5 years for all the problems to get sorted out on a brand new design of any car
problem is by then they've always changed the bloody thing now it seems.

Nothing unusual in this engine, afaik its quite hard to tune ECU in this one.
Thanks to Mitsubishi, for entire development of this company.

It could have a terrible motor but it doesn’t. It’s made even better with a Porsche transaxle. Porsche knows how to build a transaxle.

This thing sounds like the jungle juice concoction of everything you'd ever want in a sport oriented automobile. Sexy, iconic looks, a powerful but useable and GREAT sounding engine, smooth Porsche sourced manual gearbox, improved chassis for fun handling. Add a rough ride quality, lack of power steering and traction control for a truly raw feel that's illegal in new age cars, and it's PERFECT.

The fact that this is a fkn Kia stinger gt motor makes this build top notch I'm shocked at how good it sounds and I had a modded gt! I wonder if they'll tune stingers an 8k rpm redline is insane for this motor

I like how this build tried to keep the DeLorean true to what it is (V6) and only changed what needed to be upgraded. I would like to see someone put a turbo 4 in the back of a DeLorean and try to modernize the suspension to see what a nice lightweight moderately powered DeLorean could do.

The ground clearance in the engine area makes me super nervous. Car looks fun but I'd raise it to a normal ride height before I crack the engine case on some dip or bump.

Given there's about 25 sections of coolant hose on the thing, it's a miracle when they don't leak. I've been working on one and I've grown to really dislike how it was designed and put together.
