    Well done! After repairing a wooden privacy fence at our last place I agree with your assessment to add a third horizontal board. Where we lived got a steady amount of high winds so we thought deck screws was going to be better but it turned out that nails would've been better because the screws kept snapping. Live and learn. Now we're at a new place that has a chain link fence. This was just the video we needed to inspire us to try the wooden privacy fence again.

    Few years back, I had purchased faux hedge slats that gave about 97% privacy. They were good at the time but since then the coloring has faded and pieces of it are falling off. I'm going to replace this with your method. Will blend in better with existing fencing. Awesome work!!!

    Thanks for this idea. A new neighbor now has 3 mean dogs in his back yard, and my chain link fence just doesn't comfort me! I've been trying to come up with an idea, and I think this is a big help. Thank you!

      Thanks for watching! We used two sizes because we had two different post sizes in the yard. 1 15/16" x 4 5/8" and 2 9/16" x 5 3/16". Good luck on your project!

    Looks great! How has this held up over time? I want to do something similar, but I'm worried that weight of the wood might be too much for the chain length posts.

    • @40Figs
      @40Figs  6 місяців тому

      So far so good! We've had quite a bit of rain since putting it up and happy to say everything has held up really well. our chain link fence posts seemed really solid and set in concrete so it felt sturdy enough to hold the weight, but if your posts feel at all wobbly, it could cause some sagging in time. Only time will tell! Thanks for watching!

    Did you have to cut off the end of your u bolts? To accommodate for the pickets?

    • @40Figs
      @40Figs  3 місяці тому +5

      The bolts we used did not stick past the 2x4 framing so they didn't interfere with the pickets at all. Thanks for watching!

    i have a short chain link fence but want to make it a 6 f like yours, wonder if the existing post wil be good enough to hold the weight

    • @40Figs
      @40Figs  2 місяці тому

      That’s a tough one. We also have a section of our yard with a shorter fence and have been debating what to do but I think we’re not gonna go all the way up to 6ft on those shorter sections just because it feels a little heavy for the structure and we’re worried it might sag over time. You might be okay depending on how high yours is, but ours is only 4ft tall and the extra two feet floating without support feels a little risky. Best of luck on your project! And thanks for watching!

    Nice work! I've been considering doing something like this - so this is awesome to see! Do you have plans to stain/seal the fence? How would you do that on the chainlink side? Why leave the chainlink up instead of removing it?

    • @40Figs
      @40Figs  3 місяці тому

      We did stain the fence once the pickets were fully dried out. If you watch to the end of the video you can see what it looks like stained. And we left the chain link up because it was easier for both us and our neighbors who have a lot of stuff that would have to be moved in order to remove it. Luckily everyone was happy with the final result. Thanks for watching!

    Lifesaver I didn't even think anything close to doing this! I have chainlink that's sturdy trees have grown through & it still stands. I want privacy fencing in the back & a little on one side as tall as our zoning allows so the dog doesn't even attempt a jump chasing after whatever he sees & people can't just hop over attempting to steal him.
    The chainlink was partially removed by a previous owner at some point & new fencing would have to be put up to enclose the entirety of the yard, but do you think the one side can at least be done like this & attach okay to new fencing placed the regular way? The chainlink is the short typical back yard type you see that's what 4ft tall? Would taller wood still be able to be attached at the bottom & middle & then freestand on the horizontal boards that would be attached to the new woodposts?
    Appreciate your video & insight. :)

    • @40Figs
      @40Figs  3 місяці тому +1

      That's a great question! We have a portion of fencing at the side of our property that also has a shorter fence and we've been brainstorming how to tackle that section too. In our case, it looks like it's not high enough to cover with wood all the way up so we will mostly likely just follow the height of the chainlink that is already there for those shorter areas. It might be a little risky to have large sections unsupported if you're only relying on the 2x4 lumber to hold it up, but if the span isn't to long, you might be able to get away with it. We'll try to post a new video on the shorter part of our yard where we'll be tackling a similar issue to the one you're in...hopefully that will be of some help! Best of luck and thanks for watching!

    I'm actually considering doing this, so thanks for the unique approach. But in the back of my mind, I'm thinking "a lot of work and money to convert a zero-maintenance fence into a high-maintenance fence" 😅

    I’ve been looking for something like this! Question, what if our chain link fence posts are not 100% straight up and down? Does that make a difference?

    • @RicRanch
      @RicRanch 3 місяці тому

      they can easily be bent back to normal... just release the link fence hold down wires around them, bend posts as necessary then replace hold down wires, now you are ready...You Can Do This, God Bless and enjoy...

    • @40Figs
      @40Figs  3 місяці тому

      We had one post that also wasn’t straight and it worked out okay. There’s a bit of a noticeable bend in the finished fence but nothing that’s too distracting. Or as another user mentioned you can try to straighten the post if it’s badly out of whack. Best of luck on your project! Thanks for watching!
