Louis Rossmann what about an early 2015 MacBook Pro?
😂
@@rossmanngroup so what laptops do you recommend? Lenovo?🤔
I don't own any Apple products, and I'm mad qualifed people can't repair products for people in need.
I was expecting a 2 second video that just consisted of Louis saying "Don't"
That was my take on it too, or rather... my answer to the whole debacle.
Or "Consider alternative means to get your work done."
Came to the comments for this, was not disappointed :D
You think so. Sometimes you have bosses that are sheep. I had to get an iPhone for work. I requested a non iPhone but they said no, I had to get an iPhone. They don't even use any iPhone specific features 😂😂😂
Dangit, someone beat me to this very comment!
@@iStormUK If it's any constellation, this is basically the only time I've ever been able to snipe a good comment like this haha
I love how he deliberately tells people to buy older machine which have less problems, therefore less customers for him, to make sure that people spend their money smartly even though it will give him less profit. This is a man who work not just for a profit, but for a better world.
I struggle remembering my social security number and this man can quote serial models like the gospel XD
Renduevenstar How often do you remember or use your social? This man works with the board numbers, reference numbers, you use your social security number....how many times?
Try to not save contacts and just remember people by their numbers. It helps
post it here and come back to this comment
You and tony stark
i'm glad we don't have social security numbers in Australia, they sound like an inconvenient hassle most of the time
"If all of you stopped buying this, if every single one of you stopped spending money on those products... I gotta go find a new job and I have 12/13 employees here that I have to find something else to do with. And I'm still telling you: 'buy something else!'."
Listen to this man, man.
I read this comment right as he said it. It must be a sign
But yes people can’t give up there apple products
But.... buy what alternative?!
Rob Bishop Drums Hackintosh always an option
CJ true, I’ve been looking at a Hackintosh for some time now 😬
this is one of the most vicious relationships i have seen, louis literally tells everyone DONT buy these, because they suck, EVEN if this gives me work, and APPLE keeps making shitty design computers which ironically keeps Louis in bussiness and talking trash about them xD.
Truth be told, if Apple designed their products better, it probably wouldn’t result in cheaper Apple repairs, but it would probably make Louis‘ work easier I daresay.
The definition of a love/hate relationship.

Louis sees a laptop, gives it a lick: "Mm, Subdle Earthy flavors with a hints of unleaded soder and slight adhesive undertones, 2013 was a good harvest."
The greatest connoseuir of macs.
LOL. I have a late 2013 MacBook Pro 15". It's bittersweet to find out 6 years later that there's still no better option but I kinda knew that. Amazing how a company that size can't create anything good without the one Steve Jobs guy, like he never taught anyone else how to make computers in all his years there. Or phones for that matter. The 5S from 2013 was voted best iPhone ever. And then they started removing features and ports, making them fragile, slowing the cpu to save battery and reduce heat, whilst jacking up the price and introducing nothing new of any real worth.
@@gorkyd7912 You'd be surprised. Even places like NASA has issues with engineers passing down knowledge to the next generation, and it said that the art of the "golden bricks" used in the Forbidden City are difficult (if not impossible) to replicate even following instructions.
@@gorkyd7912 I'd say it's BECAUSE of Steve Job's idiotic practices that they wound up in this state. Firstly, the issues with design and ideology aren't new, and existed in his time. Secondly his control freak nature probably killed enough innovation until only the people who trusted him wholeheartedly were left. Humans don't learn much when not allowed to ask questions.
@@TheHellogs4444 Nah, Steve Jobs had plenty of issues but he's not responsible for the current Apple problems, it's just the nature of all giant corporations who have outgrown the market. GM doesn't make good cars anymore either. It's because Jobs was a founder, celebrity, billionaire, who had already been fired and rehired. So he cared more about making the products the way he personally wanted them than keeping the CEO job or making a profit for Apple. So if he didn't get his way he could just sink the whole company. Without Jobs it doesn't matter how good the engineers at Apple are, there's no one left in the company who can be forceful enough to push through improvements that aren't immediately profitable. Tim Cook can't threaten to quit, shareholders will just say "Great, you leave and we'll replace you with someone cheaper, pocket the dividends. The new guy will be even easier to bully around and if we start losing sales we'll be the first to sell Apple and buy Microsoft."
@@gorkyd7912 kk, will trust you on that one. Idk shit about how Jobs worked.
Good write up tho, ty. I agree, shareholder value as supreme metric is a bit of a bad thing, similar to how votes alone can lead to majoritarianism.
Louis @ 18:33 "An overclock i don't think you will see even Linus do"

brillant answer!!!!!!
Does Linus drink beer? Come on he's not that manly.
That was epic 😂😂😂
"that is not how you overclock, tim cook"
-Louis Rossmann
Best joke ever. made my day XD
It's overvolting. Reminds me of the overclockers modding their GPUs to accept more than 1.5 V. Saw one who set it to 3 V on LN2 and it disintegrated the power delivery.
Now I gotta say 52 V is a lot more than 1.5 V or 3 V.
Why my Macbook 12' never have any issue?? Because I only use it in its natural habitat, i.e. starbucks and college campus.
WoW u got a 12 inch... Dude rush to museum🙋🙄😂😍
It's not a 12 foot MacBook it's a 12 inch MacBook proper notation is very important. Think of someone that does contracting. A 12 inch mosaic is considerably cheaper than a 12 foot mosaic. Food for thought.
@@Mystical_Zeus Typos happen. It's one speech mark. Being that pedantic really isn't necessary.
Maybe luck, maybe some more care. Could be a lot of things, just because he mentions a "bad design" model doesn't mean it'll automatically fail, but it's more prone to failures than the better designed ones
So small. Tablet size. I don't understand what's the use, instead of getting a proper laptop

7:28 this cable would move constantly because battery expands and contracts.
In extreme cases it can expand to an extent where it creates a bulge in the bottom of the case (which goes away after you switch the laptop off). When this cable was on the other side the top case resistance was much greater and it didn't move with battery movements.
Also the flex cable constantly heats up and cools down with the battery. Therefore it also expands and retracts slightly with each heat cycle.
If the layout on the flex cable is poor (proper layout of a flex cable isnt as easy as one would think, a lot of things can be done wrong by an unexperienced engineer that wouldnt be easily spotted within a design revision process).
So IF layed out inproperly stress can accumulate in a single spot/area and cause/accelerate fatigue damage over time.
I just bought a mid 2012 mbp and I love it. I always wanted a macbook pro but it was so expensive. Now we use macs at school / work so I bought one just for fun. I love how good the build quality feel. I like the screen too, I thought it would look bad, but is fine. Also with nearly 1000 cycles in the battery still has 3-4 hours in it. I love how silent it is and how I can change out parts/ repair anything myself. It has the usb 3.0 and you update it to mojave. I was looking at the early 2015 before, but I didn't feel like paying 2x more than the one I have.
How much did you pay for it?
If you still have it, check “Opencore Legacy Patcher”. It was my first… and last MacBook Pro. Still running, currently 2TB SSD and 2TB 5400 rpm drive. Running Monterey fine (mid-2009 MBP runs Monterey fine too) - as long as you use an SSD!
Louis,, I have to disagree with you on one point.

I'd upgrade to the new model but the keyboard in particular is just a real worry... I'll pay the apple tax, but I need to know the thing will last a good five years.
I didn't take Louis' advice and picked up a Mid 2014 MacBook Pro 13" on eBay for $590. It is a 2.8 Ghz I5 with 8GB RAM, 512 GB HD, a new Retina display and a new battery with 1 charging cycle (Seller had it serviced by Apple in April 2019. I can't imagine what he paid Apple to have this serviced yet the machine is Grade A, a pristine machine. Should I pop her open and apply new thermal paste or is it OK to wait awhile?
One thing Louis didn't mention is these machines are known for the LCD display delaminating. Only time will tell if this machine will hold up. Never was an Apple person and only bought a Late 2013 Macbook Pro (max specs available at the time) to use Logic Pro after trying it in college, but I have to say that in about 7 years of almost daily and heavy use, and in most days for well over 8 hours, never had any problems with it, not even a minor one. I have to admit I'm a bit skeptical about getting the newer ones though.

I have a 2014 2.5 750M 15”, when I look at new MBPs I feel like I’ve missed out on a feature or two, but then I do a cost benefit analysis and always come to the conclusion that I bought the best MacBook off all time, with the least compromises, even to this date! It’s lasted almost years, the battery isn’t as good as it used to be, it gets hot sometimes, but nonetheless it’s still a powerhouse and third party fan control software allows me to squeeze the most out of it :)

I have a mid 2012 MacBook Pro 13" that is amazing. It has 16GB memory and I replaced the HDD with an SSD. Great machine.
i also have the 2012, its probably the same model you have, i put a ssd in it from the start, still has 2 hours battery life, and runs a dream with lightroom and photoshop, but its just started to struggle with the images from my sony a7iii, takes an age to download them, but i just go make a cup of tea, then edit as normal
I have a mid 2012 mbp retina, 8 GBs, 256 ssd. Battery still great, screen great, even running Catalina on it. I use it for generic stuff, but bought the 2019 high end 16" mbp for photo editing, music production. I love both these machines. I'm just glad I don't repair these things because I'd probably hate my mbps, even with the exemplary performance and service I've experienced.
It's sad that many of the Apple sheep recommending the MBP just happen to have one from 2013 or 14. They will be quick to say they still have their machine from 5 years ago and it's working great. To them, that proves that Apple has reliable hardware. Once they -upgrade- downgrade to a new one, they will be lucky if it lasts half as long.

About a year ago, I walk into my local Apple store with $1500 burning in my pocket ready to buy my ROSE GOLD MacBookPro. While I was waiting for a Genius to take care of me on a busy Saturday afternoon,
I tried the new butterfly keyboard. I tried it again. And then I tried it again. Then I walk out with no purchase.
Next Saturday I walk in again to the Apple Store and tried the laptop keyboard again, and again. Then after an hour of staring at the keyboard and my bank account, I walk out.
Next Saturday I walk in AGAIN ready THIS TIME to buy my ROSE GOLD laptop, and this time I DID like the keyboard, maybe I brainwashed myself into liking it, into accepting the current tech as "good" enough!
So I finally put my money down on my beautiful ROSE GOLD laptop!
And I have never look back!

Find someone who hates you like Louis hates Apple
... and they will tell you what's wrong with you and try to fix you.
Rather sorry to say that, but from the owners perspective the MBP line has been getting worse overall over the years. 2016+ MBP 15 inch is the least liked Mac so far. It has been getting less crashes with software updates, but it makes a cracking sound when lid opens.
it can be only love-hate relatioship, he makes his $$ thanks to apple. if he has to stop repairing macs if one day they become perfect and start to repair pc he'll hate a few more corporations *plus* his work 'cuz of cheaper clients...
Still rocking my 13-inch, Late 2011 MacBook Pro! Changed its RAM from 4 gb to 16 gb Corsair memory and swapped CD rom to 500 gb SSD from SanDisk. Use it as portable machine in addition to desktop PC. Works like a champ and has all the ports I need (ethernet port, 2 USBs, and SD card reader, Mini DisplayPort output)!
I have a Macbook Pro 13 inch mid 2012 and it has been brillliant. Have upgraded both the RAM and hard drive already twice and have never had any issues. It’s fast and reliable. First I upgraded the hard drive from a spinning one to a 512gb SSD (Samsung EvoPro). Then a couple of years ago I upgraded the RAM to 16gb and the SSD to 1tb. This old dinosaur is working great! 😊
Having RAM slots not only gives upgradeability, but you can change the RAM if it goes wonky, a big difference if it was soldered.

I don’t know about any other Toshiba HDDs or any of their SDDs, but the Toshiba HHD for the computer at work started to have a lot of errors around the 2-3 year mark. It was in some dell machine that I don’t really like that much, but it works. So honestly I’m not surprised their SSD fails at a high rate. I think the HDD Toshiba drive in my dads laptop (some PC brand) started to fail at a little over a year. I still have WD drives that have a few bad sectors storing unimportant data still working well for 5+ years.
Odd because my experience with Toshiba hard drives are different. My Dell Inspiron desktop from 2013 still hasn't had any issues (that i've noticed anyway), my 2011 old stock laptop hard drive is also still working flawlessly. My PS4 had a 500gb Toshiba drive that worked like clockwork since 2020, though i swapped it with a 1tb seagate drive.
52 volts to the CPU isn't how you overclock, but it's how you overcook the CPU.
"52v to the CPU, that's not how you overclock..." 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Thank you Louis. I just found you, and immediately subscribed. I own two Thinkpads, my wife and daughter own MacBook Pros. I like some things about the MacBooks, but always end up back with the Thinkpads. Thanks Louis, you make the world a better place.
THANK YOU!! Just sent this long awaited video to my childhood friend and Senior R&D Engineer @ Cisco who got me out of the cave to buy a Mac computer in 2011, its a lefthand-right brain thang..
Louis Rossmann,
Hey brother! Have you done a video on the issue called “ staingate “ I just sent my A1502 early 2015 MacBook Pro to Apple to have them replace my screen. I came across that issue by coincidence because Apple is hiding this issue very well from the main public. It took almost 5 hours on the phone with Apple just to get my issue approved.
Thanks brother!
Phillip C. Have some staining on mine also is this a known issue
@@JoeGomez1 What is this staining issue about? I have an early 2015 also and everything looks great. No problems so far.
Debbie J. Parts of the screen when the laptop was off looked hazy I called apple and they approved the issue : I noted that it was a nearly $500 repair cost which they covered
So after 5 hours of editing and 21 minutes of watching. Moral of the story: buy a ThinkPad P52. Don't delay, buy today!
Jonathan Orona and run Arch, btw
Unless you use Logic Pro X or Final Cut Pro X for example which are exclusively Apple Mac OS X. And all those annoying PC laptop Windows drivers that may or may not work with UAD hardware for example. Pros and cons for both Apple and PC.
I love watching Louis and have learned so much from his videos and whilst I certainly don’t doubt his level of knowledge, skill and experience or the veracity of his assertions, I need to say that our family has owned everything Apple in many different models over the years from the smallest iPod Nano, iPod Touch, Apple TV, iPhone, iPad, Mac Book Air, Mac Book Pro, Mac Computer etc, etc, etc and none of their products has ever failed or let us down. As a side issue however, my only gripe with Apple is their lack of support with their accessories thus having to rely on third party products. That part of Apple service and support (or lack there of) absolutely stinks.
I thought the 2015 MacBook Pro was the best MacBook Pro ever made, didnt know 2013-2014 ones were better.
Taylor 1 Only slightly cooler in long term use, not a deal breaker for many! The 2013/14 model also has an inferior trackpad according to some sources. The 2015 has a superior trackpad by far as you can click on any part of the pad unlike the 2013/14 gen. Also the SSD runs 4 lanes and with an adapter used can be changed from stock apple to practically any make like Samsung Evo and so on. The 2015 has also some real work time improvements and with nvme ssd accepted in the high Sierra update so there could also be a possibility of reduced heating but again we are not talking a conversation between two Indian tribes across the vast planes of America ie smoke signals. It probably just a couple of degrees hotter before the cooling system kicks in.
@@Panslapper So, how common is overheating (2015 model) for just basics of use?
Daphne Max I have personally never seen a complaint yet of any overheating with the 2015 model. I suppose it’s a pretty good sign considering it’s 4 year history. It’s certainly the model I would choose for improvements to the track pad and ssd over the previous generations and the better keyboard over the next 4 generations.
2014 is the best MBP more reliable model, I am willing to sacrifice trackpad and nvme ssd for that reliability.
Can confirm, got a 2013 top of the line MBP Retina with nVidia GPU and it still chugs along like a workhorse! I don't recommend Macbooks to anyone and I'm not getting a new one until they fix the design!
You nailed it. You make those youtubers who always recommend macbook become more like an iSheep..
This dude is for real ..real person keep things real in the repair industry garbage MacBooks
If you have newer MacBook sorry to be you 😒
My early 2011 MBP 13" with i7 still going strong. Not gonna buy a new MacBook Pro until apple gets it's shit together. Yes it's kinda slow now and apple isn't giving any major OS updates post High Sierra. But that's the end of problems. Absolutely reliable machine. Waiting for apple to fix its issues for the past 2 years. Planning to buy Lenovo C930 and a Dell XPS 13 2 in 1. I need 2 laptops so those are my choices.
tejasvi kapur I’m thinking too about getting a newer ThinkPad too my old one is still going strong 😀
@@QsTechService1 we don't have choice buddy. I hate windows. Believe me I do. But my machine is showing signs of ageing.U know 4 gigs of RAM isn't sufficient for 2019 atleast. + Office 2019 is ram intensive. U know it kinda heats up now. Battery backup has reduced but atleast better than the newer MacBooks . Still reliable. Think pad is a nice choice buddy. Would u recommend think pad yoga 2 in 1 or just yoga 2 in 1??
tejasvi kapur yoga I would stay away from only the ThinkPad series I actually have a Yoga in right now with no power a newer one $2000 laptop and quit working Not Good 😳 so I really can’t give you advice on that one ☝️ lol
@@QsTechService1 that means yoga is a no go. What about HP Spectre? Is it good? Is it reliable? You see my mother is currently using that MacBook pro. But it's kinda sluggish now as per my liking. So planning to buy her a new one. I need an absolutely trouble free device in a 2 in 1 form factor. Suggest me between Dell, HP and Lenovo. I would have loved to buy her the MacBook Pro but Apple doesn't wanna fix it's shitty butterfly keyboard.
A1278 and A1286 SATA cable fix: place electric tape between the cable and the case. You will never have to replace it again. Love my 2012 A1286, rebuilt a 2009 MacBook for my 12 yr old son, added 8 GB of RAM, SSD and Catalina, he does happily edit his UA-cam videos on it.
currently running an A1502 Early 2015 model. got for free (no display) cleaned and reseated LCD connector works fine now.
I'll never gonna buy a macbook, but I'm still watching this.
I only consider it cause it's the only way to develop to iOS. I've had to skip a few freelance opportunities cause I don't have a mac. I'm debating between a 2014 macbook pro retina and a 2016 mac mini

I still have the A1502. Was going to ask Apple to replace my battery, though I'm typing this at the time of the current pandemic. At that point, I did it myself.
It's still a great product. Plus it has the OG GOOD keyboard!
@@kevindao1103 Had to get mac as well and I went with this. For browsing and Qlab, mostly. :) So not purely pc master race anymore.
No one, literally no one:
Apple:
We are putting an 8 core i9 in an ultra book!
🔥🔥🔥
And its going to throttle after not even 30s under load i bet. LOL
@Kamal Kristipati it runs at nearly 90 degrees and the fan curve is very passive. How is that not a thermal problem? Just because the i9 macbook doesn't throttle doesn't mean they don't overheat. No machine today actually throttles, that's a pretty low bar.
@@Justin-tr2bs *97°C
@Kamal Kristipati You won't see a windows laptop do it, because no one would want to do it. Doesn't make sense, better solutions out there.
Atleast they're not sitting with dual cores in "pro" laptops anymore.
And that i9 is hard to cool even with the room and supplies on a desktop.
Hey Louis, if you see this comment. Is there an updated list for 2023.
Just come across this vid, but it was posted 3 years ago. Keep up the solid my friend, you’re a legend. 💪
I own 2 MacBookPro computers. One is a 2010 17 model. Only failure on that model was one of the fans and the hard drive that I replaced with a 1Tbyte SSD. It still runs fine on obsolete operating system. The second computer is a 2018 MacBookPro with a 2.2GHz 6 core i7 processor, 16Gb RAM, 250Mbyte SSD (wish I had gone larger) , Radeon Pro 55X 4 GB Graphics win Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536 MB. After about a year I have not had a single problem with this computer and recently upgraded to Catalina OS with no problems. No keyboard issues at all.
Woohoo!! I bought a 15" Late 2013 MBP used last year. I'm glad that it's on Louis' recommended list of MBPs to buy!!! :D:D:D:D:D
But does it have the nvidia 750m or just the iris pro? There is 2 models and he did recommend 1.
Josh H. GT 750M of course. Only a pleb would buy the Iris Pro version. Everything is maxed out except the CPU, i7-4850HQ @ 2.3ghz. Still a beast of a laptop
So in short, 2013-2014 is where the MacBook lineup peaked
I didnt buy it for the hardware (though the screen and touchpad are nice), but only because it's the only hardware that has macOS. The reason I have a MacBook is because for development I like working in a Unix-like environment without the headaches of actual Linux. It just works without me having to debug some hardware or driver issue every other day. We switched to Thinkpad P1s at work from MacBooks recently and it works for the most part, but it's never as smooth as macOS.
I think you can hackintosh laptops
@@andreiarg I would not recommend breaking software license i work-like scenario.
I've had a macbook pro late 2015 model 13 inch, its been working fine for years now, absolutely no problems. guess im lucky

But most importantly Louis got our back
I've installed Macs Fan Control app on my A1502 and I got fan spinnig at idle ;) hope it'll last longer.
Fans spin @ 2000rpm at idle, that's normal. You could tell MFC to spin them faster and get a slightly cooler mac.
I can vow for the mbp 15” i7 + gpu late 2013, bought it when it just came out, still using it every day.
Same here, I bought it having absolutely no idea what I was doing, but I still use mine as a part of my daily work. I've never needed to repair it. Guess I really lucked out.
Crazy, I am watching your videos for quite a bit, but was never aware of all those issues over so many years and across literally all models. That was an amazing list compiled that should really make us think. It would have been interesting showing how other manufacturer are solving/avoiding those issues.
2015 macbook pro -> I use Mac's fan control to turn the fans on and it helps keep the cpu under 80 degree celsius. If I don't turn it on, the fans would not kick in until it reaches 90+ degree
Hackintosh a thinkpad
I tossed my T430 onto my bed and it bounced off, landing on my brand new floor, and it freaking dented my new floor, thinkpad was unscathed
I have a thinkpad E540 and one of the right sides is cracked. It still works.
@@circletech7745 I dropped my Thinkpad twice from about a foot and a half, maybe two feet, in the air 'cause I'm a clumsy piece of shit. The carbon magnesium alloy whatever around the display is coming apart by the hinge a TINY BIT, like a few millimeters, but it's been years since that happened, and it's never stopped running perfectly. LMAOOO. THIS is why my clumsy ass wanted a Thinkpad, LMAO. NEVER regretted it! (Typing on it right now, in fact!)
Watching this video made me think I was extremely lucky. I bought a used 2011 A1278 (I bought it mid-2012) and I never had a issue with it. I changed the hard drive for a SSD, upgraded the RAM and last year I had the battery replaced, that's all.
I have a 17" and 15" early 2011 Macbook Pro I'm still rocking on a daily basis. They both had the logic board replaced under the Apple replacement program from years ago, other than that no issues. Upgraded 16GB 512GB SSD. Matte screen and still have the original batteries in both of them (I always have it plugged in, hardly ever use the battery lol). Can't even get Macbooks with matte screens anymore. This was the best year Macbook IMO.
I also have a 2011 i7, add SSD and 16gb Ram, it is a work horse.
You seem much more optimistic about Apple products in this video Louis 😀😀
Louis for President! Only macs I own are ones that people broke. Fixed some of them and installed Linux! Now they work as intended.
What's awesome is that I have owned the Late 15" 2013 MBP Retina A1398 (2.3GHz i7, 16GB 1600MHz RAM, NVIDIA GT 750M 2048MB GPU, and 512 SSD) since a few weeks after it was available. Have had zero issues with it, even while stationed in Asia. I've replaced the battery, fans, and heat sink myself, and it's still running strong. I even game on it while traveling for work. I was looking at upgrading. but noticed a lot of issues with people complaining about support, and overpriced bullcrap. I will keep my MBP until it dies, and not purchase another Apple product until they get their crap together. Thanks so much for your awesome videos, Louis.
The prices of these MacBooks will soon skyrocket.
I’ve personally got a 2014 air which has been pretty bulletproof, so fits with your recommendations.
Actually the recommendation was to not buy one at all
They're already getting somewhat more expensive and harder to pick up at a reasonable price, even "as parts".,

My work-issued machine is a 2017 ESC-edition MBP with maxed out RAM and SSD. No T1/T2 chip, it does have the potential butterfly keyboard and flex cable issue though neither has manifested yet. Neither gets abused much because it mostly lives on my desk connected to a Thunderbolt dock. I am a very narrow use-case, but a lucky one I guess. My personal computer is a 2015 MBP I got for quite a deal locally because it already had a de-laminated screen, but what the seller didn't know was that their particular machine was only days or weeks away from the replacement program cut-off. Rushed it to the nearest Apple store as soon as the sale was concluded, now it has a brand-new top-case and display.
Really appreciate this. Real talk about real engineering and everyday use. Thanks so much for posting.
This guy is a national treasure. Why Apple doesn't just hire him is one of life's mysteries...
Why apple doesn’t just assassinate him is beyond me.
If only they cared about improving their computers instead of just selling shitty ones for people to pay more for repair
i already cant wait to see louis recommend absolute none of them and i'm still watching the first ad
had enough of thermal throttle & crappy keyboard but I need macOS. Moving to a razer blade hackintosh.
I recently acquired the 2012 A1278 MBP dual core i7; 9 out of 10 times it wouldn't boot, getting the question mark screen instead. I tried putting in a HDD w/Linux installed and it wouldn't boot to that either. Booting into a GParted USB drive, it didn't even see the HD. Some websearching brought me to the idea of bad HD cable. I volunteer @ my local Free Geek so I was able to get a couple of visually similar but NOT identical cables from scrap MBPs we keep to harvest parts. The new ones have a thinner HD cable but the portion with two screws widens out to be compatible with the original cable's screw holes. Carefully pulled out the old cable, put in the new one, reinstalled the HD and ta-da, now it boots up every time!
ETA: Though now I'm worried that I turned this Mac into a PC.
