Corian is a brand of solid surface material created by DuPont. Its primary use is as a countertop and benchtop surface, though it has many other applications. It is composed of acrylic polymer and alumina trihydrate (ATH), a material derived from bauxite ore.
Refreshing to see somebody thinking outside the "let me make an exact copy of a guitar that has been around 70 years cause Leo said so" box. Love the built in frets. Bet it would sound better with another pickup method but WOW! Cheers
@@timsway cool! I did a lot of research and finally found an affordable CNC plan from guy at Highline Guitars but then I realized have no space for it ( Wha WHa!!) do you think could do a similar Corian project with just a router or more traditional tools?? Probably not the integral frets...
The latest version of the Chpman stick uses a somewhat similar idea of having the frets being part of the same material as the fretboard stick.com/instruments/railboard/
Another beautiful instrument. You should give that thing a light gray and black wash so it looks like stone more and pops out those graphics better. Great job! Keep it up!
Glad to see you used a round piezo. On of the tricks if it picks-up too much of the noise created by actually touching the guitar is to isolate it from the body. Some people use double sided foam tape while others encase the disk in hot glue.
Definitely a Piece of Art , Love it I hand carve mini guitars basses out of different hard woods , neck body together, and carve frets , pickups pickguards , but I Really Dig the Corian Bass All Of It
Looks really cool, does this mean that your machine can do intricate carved tops? If so, you should do a Strat style guitar with a 3D paisley carve 👊🏻💥
It's all about experimentation, making art, and having fun. Always fun to see you trying new things. This one looks beautiful. Love the carvings and the column motif on the neck. As a proof of concept, I think this one proves a lot. Thanks for sharing!
Hey Tim! Absolutely love the creativity and passion you put into your builds. I always look forward to see what you are going to do next. Oh, and thanks to the insight on how you came to build this bass!
Great idea and a beautiful result. I managed to read the neck there and that combined with the pick playing (which in my terrible phone speakers actually made it sound better) was all the hints needed. A certain bass slapper needs to see this. Anyway, it looks like playing marble. That may be rock, sure looked fun and in my book certainy is art. Thank you.
So cool and creative. Greek theme is crazy! Apollo would be proud. : ) Awesome video, love the change up on editing, matches the great background music. Mahalo for sharing! : )
I'm angry at UA-cam for not showing this video the day it was released.... I love this build! The bass notes at 3:52 are amazing.. So deep and growly. Keep up the good work my friend!
This is your best work yet brother and thats saying something! Inspirational. Literally! You inspired me to build, making an explorer type electric at the moment!
I’ve been obsessed with ancient architecture and Archaeology as a whole lately along with music as usual, so this video seems as if it were tailor made for me. 10/10
Ok, the correct way to pronounce "μεράκι" is: The first syllable is pronounced exactly the same as "meh", the second like "rah", and the third exactly like "key". Meh-rah-key. By the way, I love the idea and the result.
Cool. It will be interesting to see how long the frets hold up. I built a Corian body bass a few years ago. I made it thin and hollowed out as much as I could and it was still definitely a sitting down instrument.
Wow; the final product is stunning, I love the greek letters on the fretboard, certainly adds to the unique look haha. I can only imagine how your back would feel after a night playing with this honestly
it weighs 10.12 lbs - amazingly less than my 76 Fender P bass which is closer to 12 (and I used to pay the mortgage wearing that one several nights a week).
This is so cool... and now that you have all the cnc worked out you could totally make it again with different materials. Your builds are really unique.👍
There is no truss rod yeah? I’m curious about the relief, I’m guessing the string tension will have pulled it in to relief? Is there a fair bit of relief in there? I’m curious about this because I have just built a corian neck, although it has been reinforced with carbon fiber
yea, this is an art piece, not a "real instrument" It bows quite a bit under full tension. No magnet pickup so I put literal weedwacker strings on it to reduce pull.
Not gonna lie I kinda wanna include corian into a bass build when I eventually get into luthiery, be it fretboard or a pickguard. You've inspired me with this beautiful bass of yours
That bass actually has a really nice “live” tone! Would be interested to see you a neck like this, or maybe even just a fretboard with the built in frets on a regular wood guitar or bass
For ultimate historical accuracy on your Ancient Greek bass, you’ll need to paint the guitar and carvings as bright and gaudy as your possibly can 😂 great work!
Togaman makes his GuitarViol instruments with the frets sculpted as part of his fingerboards. I don't know how he does it but it is striking. As if the instruments he builds aren't striking already.
I have some salvaged 3/4" blue sparkling corian which I was pondering on resawing down to 1/8"ish and seeing if it would work as a semi automatic/electric guitar or at least a top.
Super cool! Since youre using a piezo I wonder how it would sound with something other than steel strings. Would help with the neck tension at least. If they even make nylon core strings that size...
Personally what I would have done for the pickup is installed it from an access panel in the back and have it just hidden under the carving of the masks. I'd also have knobs either carved from Corian if I was feeling adventurous or most likely 3D printed to look like Greek columns.
No Pythagoras, no fretboard. We wouldn't have a clue without the Greeks. Great fun project. Definitely a good idea to make it look more like a temple ruin!
I think it needs a little bit of a paint not to change the color but just something slightly darker that would slip down into the cracks and make the lines stand out.
"Hey babe, take a walk on the wildside." -Pythagoras
That gives a whole new meaning to "Classic Rock"
LOL
I'll say!!!

You just cant imagine how cooler this becomes for me being a greek. The lettering is correct. Congrats Tim!
"of course its a terrible bass"
im glad he said it
Tyler it’s a prototype. It plays way better than I thought it would. It needs neck adjustment but still a cool and brave idea.
I'd rather call it "interesting sounding".
Refreshing to see somebody thinking outside the "let me make an exact copy of a guitar that has been around 70 years cause Leo said so" box. Love the built in frets. Bet it would sound better with another pickup method but WOW! Cheers

Holy crap. I just saw "Mountain Song" on a corinthian column-necked corain bass! So rad! "All cows eat grass." - Aristotle.
that's a deep cut for the gen Xers. "Have you seen my wig around? I feel naked without it." - Plato
@@timsway "And the water is so piping hot. And the water is so piping... It beats upon my and and I'm..." Socrates
"wish i was ocean size - they cannot move you man, and no one tries" - diogenes
I think there was a piece of "Whole Lotta Love" at the end too.
I was first introduced to Jane's by seeing the Mountain Song video on Beavis & Butthead!
the most beautiful build yet!!
Awesome stuff! Love the idea of carving the frets directly into the material. The Greek letters & carvings are really really cool.
thanks man. I'm happy it works.

Another beautiful piece of art !
As a former Corian fabricator AND CNC programmer/operator that is impressive. Love the frets! Now put some lights in it!
I don't know man, that's the flattest sounding guitar I've ever heard, only second to my own.
ah I see what you did there...
quit sending your tone wood snob friends over here.
Amazing!! and it actually doesn't sound too bad, milled frets and all.😉👍
I think it looks great! And that background music was spot on! Great job Tim!
Still love watching this build of yours!

yes, it can do highly detailed carving. I've carved my son's face in to a brass coin the size of a silver dollar once.

I am truly inspired!
Sorry the joke is just there waiting to happen. That bass ROCKS!
Ok, since you started: "It's a marble of modern science"
This bass will be chiselled in history
We need to hear counter point this thread.
tim sway I don’t know how to program a CNC. it’s all Greek to me.
I'd like to counter that but I can't top it.
Creative with a capital "Creat". What kind of cutting blades do you use for slicing and dicing the Corian. Very inspiring. Thank you.
i used all regular woodworking tools!
Wow really cool build .You pretty much nailed all the lettering too!! Big fan from Greece.
Hey Tim! Absolutely love the creativity and passion you put into your builds. I always look forward to see what you are going to do next. Oh, and thanks to the insight on how you came to build this bass!

incredibly stylish
Stunning! You are an artist!
The Greek sculptures have got to be the most creative way to lighten up a bass I've seen.👏👏👏
Love the new reuse! Marble like, perfect. It'll be interesting to see over time if the corian neck warps without a truss rod.
so far it has stopped at a certain point and stays but indeed, only time will tell
I’ve been obsessed with ancient architecture and Archaeology as a whole lately along with music as usual, so this video seems as if it were tailor made for me.

yes! It would sound much better with a magnetic pickup but I wanted a clean look.

LOL. I sent the video link to my friends at Avid and wrote "If this doesn't make someone want to buy a CNC I don't know what will!" :)
of course the vid doesn't show the years of learning the software and the hours of designing just this piece... :)
wow cool. I may try to do this one when I get all power tools ...
I’ve heard that running boards through the saw in reverse is dangerous. 😉😉😉
Great video Tim!
thanks Cory! I owe it all to my CNC :)
No Pythagoras, no fretboard. We wouldn't have a clue without the Greeks. Great fun project. Definitely a good idea to make it look more like a temple ruin!
FYI, if you have any corian left over it makes excellent zero clearance tablesaw inserts etc. I'm mid-way through filming a video on this now.
