I saw his lineup at The Beacon Theater in Manhattan. Amazing, what's even more amazing is that they opened, and then, we got to hear Pharoah Sanders and then- Freddie Hubbard! I'll never forget it.
I think herbies mwandishi period is probably my favorite of his. Those 3 albums are amazing and I still listen to them regularly after hearing them for years and years and I'm still not bored of them.
They are insanely strong albums! I just got a 1973 pressing (early repress) of Mwandishi, Crossings and Sextant Oh my! This music is spiritually connected, it is everything that is important about collaborating with people in a band!
Starts with a Buster Williams solo and goes to the deep cosmos. Superb music and you get to see it too, thanks to European television when there was little to no contemporary jazz on American television, especially by black artists,
haven't heard some of this since I was a teenager in '73 ... watching this, my mouth is wide open, WoW, my mind is wide open, I can't pull away, i'm all the way in this music. Masters all.
Great comment, and great that you experienced this first hand when you were a teenager. It is superb music, isn't it? Truly jaw-dropping. I was only a baby myself, always felt like I was born a little too late, but it's so immersive that I feel like I must have been there, at least in spirit ...
All the best stuff was just touched on Fall, Nefertiti, Toys, Iris, Teru, this band was truly hipper than head hunters. Never completely fleshed out like these ideas desreved.
European audiences always appreciated jazz a lot more than in the U.S. Jazz was born and developed in America during times of racial tension, so it makes sense.
Imagine being a 13 old year old kid that already loves music turning this on. Amazing is much to weak a word for it. Herbie was looking his coolest too. If the music didn't get me his look would.
Great band ! And at a time when French tv was producing programs that don't see anymore. And the unbelievable mister Andre Francis with his one and only way to pronounce English musicians name
I think it might have been taped in 1971, because if I'm not mistaken, by 1972, after the recording and release of their second album 'Crossings', Patrick Gleeson had joined the group on Moog Synthesizer. Anyone?
At 7:36 the host says "We discovered that band last year at the Nice festival". Mwandishi played there in 71 (recording does exist). Also the TV channel (INA) mentions a broadcast date: June 3rd 1972.
Then how come Pat Gleeson is not on the band stand? Pat Metheny saw Mwandishi live in Kansas City, 1972, and Pat Gleeson was in the touring group. @@LouisdeMieulle
I'm not familiar w/ Upright Bass, I've only held and tried playing one a couple of times, many years ago. Is it my impression or does Buster William's bass have what looks like especially high action?
Great Jazz,Spiritual Vibes...truly a treasure,Masters !...

I couldn't have said it better. Well put. Quite possibly one of th greatest line-ups of ALL time...any genre! 😎🎹💫🌌
Agreed, so forward thinking, even nearly 40 years later...

No question. Commercially blown away by the Headhunters but artistically probably Herbie's high watermark

French telévision. Vive la France! 😁

The fabulous Buster Williams. What a sound!
I have the LP's, but never heard them live. Great post.
I was too young to get into a club to see this...sacred!
European audiences always appreciated jazz a lot more than in the U.S. Jazz was born and developed in America during times of racial tension, so it makes sense.
Thanks for the post. See and hear this band...a moment in time...Fantastic!

Pat Gleeson was the cherry on top. Moved them into outer space. But it's great to see these guys live.
