I saw them in Pori jazz festival in Finland during this same summer 1985. I'll always keep that on my mind. Excellent.
I was there in the audience ! Still remember that great concert and PEter Erskine's grey Recording Custom : Too bad that Chuck Loeb and Victor Bailey passed away recently.....

I saw Step Ahead at Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz in 1985 that was an incredible experience, I never forget, I felt elated then.
amazoid... these guys are too good to be real.. If i could play like a 5th like that I would be ultra accomplished.. need the next life time ha!

io ero ragazzino (14) - ero a Perugia con mio padre per Umbria Jazz - a lui non interessava, provai ad andare da solo, ma non trovai i giardini del frontone ... peccato. Ho sentito poi Brecker anni dopo a Milano, ma gli Steps non c'erano già più. Devo anche dire che non era e non è il "mio genere", ma insomma.. roba da sentire. un gran peccato
di sicuro è un dei piu bei concerti di tutti i tempi a umbria jazz. ed io ero presente.
I ve seen all of them in different bands in the last 30 years but never so powerful like here together.
Loeb is wonderfoul too, with guitar synth, old one roland 707?... really great, tha machine at the time was 1, or 2 sec delayed

Saw this incarnation of the band the week before at Summerfest in Milwaukee.
The laid back and jazzy funk-rock passage ca 11:00 to ca 15:00 is Steps Ahead at it's best, imho, despite lacking the great Eliane Elias. Brecker plays in an unusually seeking and interesting way there and Chuck Loeb adds some nice open, almost Andy Summers-like harmonies.

Yes, it's a m.i.d.i. vibraphone. Chuck Loeb does the same on guitar here.
