Patreon has been a god-send for content creators as they try to crowdfund support for their channels, but I have seen a lot of really creative people make a lot of really bad choices in how they approach using the platform. Here are the 5 most common mistakes I see people making when they start a Patreon channel and why they wind up being a problem. Here's Patreon explained for those of you out there considering launching one!

Summary:
1. Unsustainable process. You need consistent content.
2. Used Patreon for eCommerce. You should use free platforms to advertise your brand, and produce new stuff. Don't use Patreon to sell merch.
3. Went too big on rewards. Rewards don't matter that much. Rewards should scale and not eat up your time. Stick with thank you, early access, and name in credits at first. Targeted rewards can come later.
4. Not enough patience. Need to be consistent over time. Don't break viewers' trust. May take a year or years to get to where you want.
5. Lack of a clear mission. Need to articulate clearly what you create. Also must pick something you are passionate about, so you will keep going with it.
6. You have to tell people about your Patreon.
Great video, Drex! Thanks.

I am starting soon thinking August 1. I had some members with my 1st YT channel but want to grow it further. Thanks for the information and great video!
"they're not fans of the work you're producing, they're fans of taking advantage of you." - Beautifully said.
This last sentence hit home! Thank you for this video!
I have an entire page of notes, thoughts, scribbles, and underlined words, just from this one video. It's like getting pre-emptively slapped over the head, *before* I make the dumb mistakes. All of the lesson, none of the shame. Thank you for this! My Patreon won't be launching for months... and now I have time to properly prepare.
I was avoiding your video because it looked clickbait-y, :P but it was actually super helpful and thoughtful. Thank you for this video.
I’m glad I pulled through, despite the crises. I am retiring next yr at 55 with 3 houses paid off worth 4.5 million . One is my place of residence the other 2 properties will give me $80,000per/yr rent . I will have an income stream of $20,000 per yr through my super which gives me total $100,000 a yr to live comfortably . I have no debts ... Stay Motivated!!
Hello, thanks a lot, I'm about to start patreon and I'm glad I took the time to review some patreon experiences before I start. The advices are awesome, especially the one about keeping it simple with the rewards at the beginning and offer more targeted rewards once we know our audience better.
Have a great day ! 🌸
More than half way through this, I've watched a few Patreon advice vids and this is easily the best. Useful info delivered without fluff - thanks!
All work deserves payment. So you're right. If they get mad that you have a way to receive optional payments from people who appreciate your work, they aren't fans. They're fans of taking advantage of you.
Finally a good video about this topic, thank you
Thanks! I am just starting out and your video was extremely helpful and clear. A lot of the things you spoke about were things I knew in the back of mind, It was good to hear them. The big one for me was "patience." I have been hearing that a lot lately as I attempt to switch gears in life. It is a lesson I am finally learning. Thanks again! Now I need to go back and tweak the tiers and then get started on more content. Thanks again!
Really useful advice delivered in a very genuine way, thank you for sharing.
Nice one Drex - thanks for your generosity, really appreciate your efforts.
GOLD! Great information here and well done. Thank you 🤙🏼
Some very good advice, which I will take on board. Subbed.
To the point and really good. Thank you for sharing this.
Thank you very much for these tips man, thanks a lot! Very helpful!
I found this very helpful, thank you. Succinct, relatable and well paced :)
Thank you this was soooo helpful! I just started with Patreon this week.
Amazing video and tips! I'm thinking about starting a patreon myself and your video was realllly insightful!
This was a good starting 5. Especially #3 then #5. Good stuff
Very good points and a helpful summary - I've just set up a Buy Me A Coffee page and am considering Patreon down the line a bit when I've launched an online course I'm developing, so this is useful experience to share. Thank you and best wishes.
I found this incredibly helpful and valuable. Thank you!
I have been thinking about in creating content for starting a Patreon channel and these suggestions are very helpful! TYSM!
Thank you for talking your time to serve us!
Super thorough & helpful, cheers!
This is great advice! Thanks for your help!
This is extremely helpful. Thank you
Thanks heaps for this video. Lov how clear and relatable every pont is!
I really like your last tip! My reason for not creating a patreon is just not being able to get over asking people for support.
Hi Drex. Millard Randolph Curry here from MRC-FX MUSIC. After watching your video entitled, "Patreon Tips: Avoid These 5 Mistakes" I felt compelled to drop you a reply to let you know how much I appreciated the content and to congratulate you on a job well done. Your demeanor came shining through as very honest and sincere. Thank you so much for the advice. I wish you all the best and much success as you continue pursuing your passion. Keep Up The Good Work!
Nice Job.. I'm an old guy who storytells, encourages and helps people think like an artist. been building a community for the past two years.. going to try to launch real soon.. Thank you
Great video Drex! You helped us better understand our Patreon 👍
Great video-thank you very much.
Well put, thanks for the advice!
Great video. I enjoyed it a great deal. You're right, the creator should be passionate about what we're producing, first and foremost. No passion from the creator=no passion from the fans.
Great! Thanks. Super helpful.
Wow, this was a amazing simple breakdown of patreon . I will build my audience first on my social Plattform. Then consider what best suits myself and my membership.
This is so helpful. thank you so much!!!
This video helped me a lot. Thanks, seriously
Great info!! Thank you!!
Good info. Thank you for sharing
I am very new to Patreon 😊thank you so much for sharing

This was really goid. Thabk you!
I say this every opportunity I get but your flow circle benefit was not the reason I signed up but is a reason to keep going
THANK YOU !
Excellent video! I now know what I suspected, patreon is not for me. You’ve saved me a lot of trouble. Thank you 😊
Great video man! Well presented :)
Thanks Drex!
Hi . Thanks much for this video . It's very helpful. I'm new to Patreon . I started writing blogs on songwriting but then was made aware that some of my old blogs about music history from my website were gaining some interest so I decided to write about that. I know that you said that you have to have a clear goal of what content you're passionate about but also what is going to be sustainable for the long run. I now have a page with two different topics ,one on songwriting ,which I'm passionate about and which is sustainable but doesn't get the interest like my music history blog posts which are more sporadic and less regular. The result is I haven't had a single view to the page . I'm not sure where to go with it and have made the cardinal mistake that you mentioned of no clear topic. If you or anyone can help I would be very grateful. Many thanks.
Great video!
Great Video, thank you.

This is really very helpful ❤😊 Thank you so much
TY!
I haven't launched on Patreon yet. I am being cautious. I have my tiers ready but I need to absorb what that is going to mean where my work flow is concerned. I have subscribed here and I have liked as MY homework is to go through your channel tomorrow and see what other words of wisdom you have to share :)
Thank you the last is for me
Thank you
Thank you for this video! You have Broken this down to
Make perfect sense! Now, I am off to create my Patreon Acct!
Good video, thanks.
So here's what I'm looking to do. I'm looking to develop some kind of channel or page that would fund running races, and the extra funds raised would go to charites, but I don't know where to start or at least where to have people send the money.
I really appreciate this video. I am a multi-content creator trying to support myself to produce content at a more steady rate. I considered using Patreon as a passive income to focus more on content creation instead of making excuses as to why I couldn't do it. After watching your video, I need to sit down and think very long and hard about exactly what I want to do for my communities. Before starting this, I fall under the category of needing a clear mission.
thank you
Thabk you! This was vwry helpful. I'm new to Patreon and was wondering if you could tell me the best way to use tags?
So good!
LEGEND!!! FUCK YEAH BRO! I’m subscribing rn! And. I’m already following you on Patreon! I’m gonna make a hort that says the line I needed to hear (AND USE so desperately) since becoming tiktok famous “if people complain about supporting you financially, they’re not fans of you, they’re fans of taking advantage of you” I’m gonna tag you! Also I wanna tag you when I post it on tiktok? I don’t see your tiktok link here?? FUCK YEAH DEX! You da man! God bless you!!!
informative
Patreon got drepionx art
I’m five years deep into being a Patreon creator and have made good money but just a little short of it being enough to be my sole source of income.
The amount of time needed though can be huge and in truth it’s pretty much taken over my life so successfully creators need to be passionate about their chosen subject matter and with a consistent track record for creating work even before starting Patreon.
In five years there’s been only one month when I paused my Patreon and that was pre-planned and patrons knew of this ahead of time and were supportive of me doing so.
This video is great and I wish there had been more advice like this when I started as a few of the mistakes I really avoided by blind luck rather than good planning.
I’m definitely going to watch it through again as it’s packed with great advice and I’ll need to take time to digest it further. Thanks for making it!
Dear sir, when I upload video on patreon page then after 90% upload it gets canceled due to network problem and my data gets over, I have to restart again, while it doesn't happen on youtube Yes, sir, can you tell the solution of this problem?
If I only give once to each creator whose I follow activity but cancel the automatic renewal, can I still enjoy the unlocked content?
Thank you Drex love it
Hi! Just an honest question. Can the Patron copy and paste my text posts? I am very worried if that is possible. And I hope not because it'll be a lot easier to steal my work.
If only I know what I am doing I am sure I could make a good video...unfortunately I have discovered I can barely manage to put pictures on to the title headers... Oh well, I will keep trying and I refuse to ask my kids to help....! Thanks for the info, though.
i am going to start an egirl/cosplay patreon soon! this was still very insightful, thank you ❤
Hi thanks for the great advice......so people have to have a account to make donations to you on a monthly basis on patreon? You can't make a one time donation ? So for a hiker like me how should I approach this? Any advice please....I was thinking PayPal or gofund me I don't want to monetize my chanel and run ads on my videos so how should I go about it ? What platforms could work better thanks for any advice !
You do assume we know what poi is. My guess... A Japanese decorative fish for people who want to one up koi ponds. Interesting view on Patreon.
Bro you need a new microphone! It makes too much "SSS" noise! Other than that awesome video! Helpful! Thanks!
Ok, so let me see if I got this right.. let's say I have 3 tiers and the first one is a simple Thank You, the second one is early access and the third one is name in credits... Does this mean the first tier will not have access to any of my posts? Or? Cause this is what is not clear to me... if the first tier only receives a Thank You, then they only donate because they want to support me without being able to see my posts on Patreon?
proactively cracking down piracy should be considered a part of "not enough patience". imagine you the creator telling you that they would send it through DMs and you had to wait for months for it, is how it *can* break the viewers' trust, real quick.
I have an issue, a new Patreon paid for a Tier and now he's angry because the content is not good enough.
I gave free previews and said a good description of each Tier so you know exactly what you're buying.
Now he's saying I'm a scammer and he's going to "review" me. I really don't want to refund him. I already told him he got the lowest Tier and he can upgrade if he wants but he's not having it.
Idk what to do.
BLINK PLEASE
Thanks to all of Drex's Patreon supporters...
Isn't just like begging in the street?
Can you please help me start off please
I am on Patreon. No subscribers. I don't have the courage to ask people to fund me. So I gave up.
