I have used both the platforms, but clearly the UI of buy me a coffee is so much better than Patreon for both the creator and the supporters. Seamless payments without the need to create an account. Also the one time donation makes it even better.
This is SUCH a great video!! Thank you!! I created a Patreon and was juuuust about to launch it on my UA-cam channel until I started hearing all the awful things about Patreon's changes influenced by big investors. Definitely going to check this out :)
I just signed up for Buy me a Coffee. They make it clear they only take 5%, but the Stripe fees are 2.9% + $0.30. On a $5 donation that is almost 13% gone!
One thing I wish these companies would do is to have the option to have payments sent straight to our bank accounts instead of always using the greedy middleman.
Someone has to pay for hosting though. Otherwise you'd need adds for example but that's hard to pull off for a creator platform. If your audience is big enough you can host something yourself which could be cheaper and less censorship but to compete with a 5% fee you need a substantial audience
Oh I hear now that strip also has it's fees. Which leaves you with almost only crypto as an alternative which you would need to host yourself. And crypto has fees too but some very low ones
I just joined Buy me a coffee as a new content creator & it's honestly SO MUCH MORE than a Patreon! It gives so much value & authenticity to newbies. I'm so impressed 💯
Patreon suspended my account for no reason at all, refused to explain it, and was highly rude. There are many creators on Reddit and other platforms who are saying the same thing. I am going with Buy Me a Coffee for sure. 🙌
I've seen some different videos about this and I'd still go with both. The ones who will really like my work and take membership thru Patreon would give me some stability. I'd use BMAC for the more casual followers who would simply donate in a more spontaneously/occasional basis while still having 'free' access to everything I produce.
On Patreon I’m stuck on where it says needs link and title but I’m uploading from my laptop it doesn’t allow me to publish am I doing something wrong ?
An excellent case forBuy Me a Coffee =) You've inspired me to use it in addition to Patreon, it definitely makes sense to have a one-time donation option that doesn't require creating an account!
Thank you so much for creating this video🙏 This speaks volumes on which one to go with for beginners artists like me who have no idea when starting out! I will sure begin with Buy me a coffee and see where that leads! :)
You convinced me! I run a site with 650,000 page views a month and a Podcast with 6000 audio downloads a week. Patreon is really NOT moving the ball. I am on it.
@@EiDontNow I sold the business in December 2023 and retired. So I don't know the update. You can contact the new owner and ask them at "support AT vtforeignpolicy.com"
Huge Missing feature of BMAC is no way to post videos that can't be shared. Basically, if you shsre private YT video in your membership only pages, vidoes can still be shared with others. Patreon has it's own video hosting that allows for a proper, paywalled video content.
Great break down of this platform. I tried using Buy Me A Coffee 3-4 years ago when I first started with Six String Fun but didn't really get any traction. I'm assuming it was because I had just started SSF and had not clue what I was doing. I think it's time to take a look at this again and see how I can improve. Thanks again for this!
I've heard of BMAC, who hasn't. But, I never really looked into it as a serious payment processing solution. I was on a membership site and one of the members was selling a $2 pdf with a "bonus" video on a subject I care about. As you point out in this video the transaction couldn't have been more "frictionless" and modern. My head is spinning with the possibilities. This just off the top of my head: A restaurant offers a (PDF with video) exposing the restaurant's secrets. They could sell info products based on their own menu items. Quick and easy, $2 bucks ... Not a care in the world, an unassuming call to action .... $$$Click$$$ And only 5% for the big guy, count me in. Target niche info products and sell them cheap, this could be huge.
Hello, so u have mentioned in the "supporter experience" 4:21 section that supporters can use either GPAY , or credit 💳/debit cards for payment. I want to know if there is any restriction, like does Buy me a coffee accepts only VISA/MasterCard for international payments? I want to support a creator but I don't have any of them. I DO HAVE an international DEBIT card ( ♦️NOT VISA/MasterCard international card ) that i guess supports international payments. So am I good here?
Curious. Why wouldn't you just use a simple Carrd landing page, customized however you want (easy and only $19/yr) + Stripe integration? You can do one-time + subscription by default and only pay the 2.9% + $0.30 vs. BMAC's 5%. Just ease of use? Maybe 2% really isn't that big of a deal, but the way I look at it, BMAC and any other 3rd party layer will eventually raise fees on their end, while Stripe will maintain at least the 2.9% + $0.30. All you're essentially paying for is a customer UI, right?
I teach in a niche market, was looking for the best ways to create a membership. Weighed Patreon, BMAC and UA-cam. Ultimately decided on YT because it’s simply easier for my YT students - I stay where they are and they found me. I also don’t like blog formats, prefer gallery with an image of the class. I don’t have to watch over it which frees up more studio time. My memberships are going fine, my channel views, subs are growing and my rpm is going up, too (it was about 6.00 before memberships and a month later, it’s 8.10). I believe by sticking with YT, I am seeing growth that I would not have seen had I left. YT is actually helping my channel grow - for me, 30% is a small price to pay. They have to do some work on the process of joining but that’s my only complaint.
Hi there! Love your content! I'm currently trying to find and access your Off the Ladder podcast but cannot find it? What platforms is it on? Thanks so much :) Laura

Hi Jijo. I've spent months with bmc owner because she doesn't take accountability for the transition in between bmc and the patrons bank. She would not look into what happened. What's more I was having fraudulent patrons that made purchases and refunded it and that took money from my bank account. When I reported a pending fraud transaction the fraudster declined they made that claim. So I've been through some BS trying to get the refund on BMC whether it be by the website and dealing with your agents.
@@aprilc00kieSorry to hear that. We work within certain limitations set by our payment processors, so there can be edge cases where it gets tricky for the creators. Hey, man what do you think about the "Ko-Fi". It is very similar to buy me a coffee and it doesn't charge any fee on donation. Buy me coffee charges 5% on everything.
Yeah Ko-Fi just got on my radar. Haven't done a lot of research but it seems pretty great off first glance! I think BMAC has more features but the no fees on Ko-Fi is pretty amazing. I'll look more into it 👍
wait a minute, how come this video presenter and channel don't match...Also btw your Buy me a coffee UA-cam video link doesn't work.....Ironically that's when I noticed....LMAO!
While I agree with your comparison, I'd postulate that Buy Me a Coffee is a good source of supplemental income rather than a replacement for Patreon. For starters, Patreon has an app that significantly reduces user friction. However, since Patreon does not have donations or commissions implemented into their platform, Buy Me A Coffee would work better. Adding a Substack newsletter to these two things would also work.
Currently trying to decide between the two right now. Either will be a main source of income for my business during the startup phase. You really think an app would make that much of a difference, and is a competitive advantage? I researched and both platforms don't offer any community (unlike Kickstarter). So you'd have to build it yourself. I'd think that if any platform competes in this space, community alone would be the competitive advantage, but neither have.
This video is succinct and so well made. You talk like a copywriter. I’m surprised you haven’t made more videos in this year, and hope to see more content from you. :)
For the supporters there is one BIG ISSUE. The amount of supporters that don’t have a creditcard googlepay or applepay is bigger then the group that does. Most supporters are outside of the USA. I'll use one word to prove you wrong, as a creator. Paypal. I just deleted my account due to this reason. Ko-Fi is the better option over both of these.
