    He put Vincent's paintings into words, that alone is no small feat as Vincent was a master; but he also put Vincent's life, pain, mental illness, his treatment by others, and his tragic death into words. This song is a masterpiece that stands right alongside Vincent's own works and the two compliment each other.

    When you understand the subject and the lyrics, it's even deeper and emotional. Talking about all of the paintings hanging on 'nameless walls', that are traded for fortunes nowadays. Yet he died a pauper, without ever selling a painting, supported all of his life by his own brother. Like a lot of people have said, this gives me chills, a lump my throat, and brings tears to my eyes every time... We really had the best storytellers back in the 70's.

    • @davidwolfson7060
      @davidwolfson7060 2 роки тому +2

      He didn't kill himself. He was presumably murdered, accidentally, by a boy whose father was a Doctor and they were vacationing for the summer where Vincent was staying and painting outside Paris, Auvers-sue-Oise. There is absolutely no proof that he committed suicide. In the past eighty days before his death, he had painted 75 paintings, one of which, Portrait of Doctor Gachet, sold for $82.5 million in 1990. My point here is that nobody suicidal works so prolifically while suicidal, or even remotely depressed.
      Yes, there is much speculation and many theories, but the fact remains that, he was found bleeding from a gunshot wound to his stomach in his room, and he claimed that no one was responsible. Many speculate that he was protecting the boy. The gun, as well as all his painting supplies were never recovered from the field that he had been known to have painted in, at the time of he was shot. He walked several kilometers back to town to die in his room, and if I'm not mistaken. His brother Theo took a train from Paris and was with him before he passed. It doesn't add up as a suicide and there are more than one speculation that suggest he was, as I said, protecting the boy who had a pistol, a cowboy souvenir that his father allowed him to purchase at a traveling, Wild West Cowboy show that had previously toured through Paris sometime during that year. Look it up, because the information is well documented. It's just not as common as one would think, sadly perhaps because it doesn't create more "hits" as suicide and all that goes with that scenario.

    "Vincent" is a song for the poets who are not heard; for the artists tortured with gifts that no one sees; the lover's divided by injustice and the actions of the unfeeling; for peace makers in a world fully of war; for those who sit quietly aching in their loneliness; and for the dreamers who cling desperately to the vanishing dream of something better, something wonderful. Been waiting awhile my brother Jamel for you to get to this lovely heart wrenching song...a song that always brings a tear to my eye. Don McLean's Vincent is a love letter and a letter of apology to a man he never knew but felt:
    "Then when no hope was left inside/on that starry starry night/you took your life as lovers often do/but I could have told you Vincent/this world was never meant for one as beautiful as you."
    Van Gogh was tortured and just wanted to give something healing and beautiful to world, a vision, and to be seen and loved, flaws and all....but alas it was not meant to be.
    This is "great music", for it transcends the normal and touches the sky...the starry starry sky!🌉❤
    Think you would also appreciate Nat King Cole's "Nature Boy".🙏✌

      @@l-bird it's actually a great story. She was at a don mclean concert, and he played, Empty Chairs. She got a napkin and jotted down a poem. That turned into Killing Me Softly. Then Roberta Flack did her thing, and Lori said it was Roberta. None of us would know the song without Roberta Flacks version...
      But like 40 years later, Lori Lieberman went to see Don Mclean, and before he played Empty Chairs, he, unknowingly to her, stopped everything and pointed out Lori, and told about killing me softly. He just recognized her, out of the crowd. She didn't know he even knew who she was. Amazing.

    I will never forget the first time I heard Don McLean perform this song even several decades later. I was watching some music awards show being televised (have no recollection of which one) and he walked out with his guitar and stood in front of a huge curtain at the side (not center) of the stage. As he started to sing the cameras began panning the audience, lots of very recognizable faces sitting there. A few seconds into the song you could see the expression on people's faces change. You could plainly see this was not what they were expecting. So quiet. They were hanging on every word he sang, as was I. He had them in the palm of his hand in a way I have seldom, if ever, seen again. This song for me is a work of art and Don McLean is very much an artist, not simply a performer.
