While I could always understand where people who criticize CG were coming from, I never really felt like I was missing anything by the phasing out of practical effects. Now that I've started watching Ultraman, and it's somehow retroactively become part of my childhood, I'm amazed at how much more invested I can get in the performance of a suit actor despite seeing how blatantly "less real" it is from a technical standpoint. I felt giddy watching Ultraseven summon his capsule monsters in Ultra Galaxy Legend like I was revisiting my youth despite having watch some of the original Ultraseven series only a matter of weeks prior.
Where a violin gets possessed and uses music to absorb people's souls and transforms to a giant monster because its owner didnt wanna be forced to learn the violin per his mom. And thats even tame on the craziness side of things between Ace and Taro
I like how most of the monsters in the series are choju. Previously there were at least some or very few monsters like Woo you could sympathize for. Ace was different. Each choju created by Yapool were emotionless and cold killing machines meant to do business

One of the story pitches had an earth scientist who hates humanity creating a machine that controlled monsters. Other pitch had an army of space monsters coming from the Andromeda Nebula. Another pitch had an alien being called Satan Star a recurring villain
Ace took the abrupt pacing of the final third of Return, paired it with some absurd storylines and batshit crazy monster designs and made, IMO, one of the most fun Ultraman series of the Showa era.
I've been binge watching Evangelion and Ultra Q as well as Ultraman in 1966 & I must say after watching these films and being new to the series I saw a lot of things that Anno was inspired by in Ultraman. I'm really looking forward to watching Shin Ultraman and hope to see these old 60s kaju monsters in high detailed effects in todays cinema.
The first half of Ace is absolutely bonkers and amazing in its executuon of being just a wacky trippy 70s show. Second half isn't terrible but its just kind of going through the motions. I can kinda get when people throw shade at the Ultra series after Return for being bland. I dont agree with it but I understand the thought process.

I was just commenting elsewhere that the Barabas rain fight doesn't get enough love. It's really one of the most intense and atmospheric Ultra fights, lots of great moves, and even emotional high stakes. The popularity of the Ace Killer fight and character (it's one of my favorites too) shows the strength of the premise, characters (I vividly remember Ace refusing to leave his brothers even as a child), visuals and atmosphere IMO. There's a reason it struck so many viewers and keeps getting revisited, even though the actual fight is more impressive from memory 🤣 It'll never happen but just imagining how this 2-parter would play out in today's writing/graphics, it'd be amazing. Ace is my favorite Ultra so thanks for the great review!
That was the one Ultraman toy I had as a kid. I remember getting it in 4th grade. We went on a school class trip into the city and went into some nice novelty store that had all kinds of weird items; Most people were buying exploding chewing gum, fake poop, whoopie cushions, horror themed gloves, masks, etc. I got Ultraman Ace. I had no idea what it was I just knew that it looked cool. Everyone made fun of me getting it though once we were all outside the store but our teacher defended my purchase as he knew what it was and said it was very cool and then people were kinda jealous they didnt get one lol
Ah, my very first ultraman I watched and my all time favourite. Ace was definitely competing with Kamen rider in the ratings and this showed in how they had innocent bystanders dying horribly in almost each episode, to drive home how evil Yapool and Shocker was. Excellent examples was Aribunta melting and consuming entire subway trains full of innocent passengers, A Yapool Possesed kid massacring an entire village and his grandparents in graphic detail in the Vakshim episode , etc. I think Tsuburaya was forced to tone down the violence as you noticed in the middle the series the Yapool threat was mostly shelved and it took a more Taro-like child friendlier tone.
Tsuburaya intended Ultraman to be kid friendly in the first place, if my memory serves me correctly, so this series diverging from that tone is pretty drastic. I mean, that one monster being torn apart in (by early 70's standards) spectacularly bloody fashion is pretty awful by Ultraman standards. I wonder how many Japanese kids were scarred for life from that one scene?
Little batch of rants 1. Yoko: Why did she just fuck off to the moon? There's a reason why both of their names are said in the theme. Her and Houkuto should have been the main characters through the whole show. 2. Ace Killer: He has such an interesting concept behind him. A being built for only one purpose, killing Ace. He should have been a recurring villain, and in my opinion, Ace Killer should have been the final villain. 3. Ace's brutality: I know it sounds nitpicky, but there should be an in universe reason why Ace is so violent and merciless in the show. 4. Leaving Earth: There is no excuse for Ace to literally abduct Houkuto in the final episode and fly off back to M78. He probably has his own life to worry about and family that probably thinks he's dead because he has not been seen since the 1970's. At least Jack had the decency to frame Hideki as deceased to his comrades so they wouldn't just think he deserted. And even that is stretching it, because the Ultra's shouldn't be taking these human hosts as going away presents.
Wait I have seen this before, in zone fighter not only are the kaiju referred to as Terror-Beasts, a lot of the monsters use some sort of flame/fire/smoke as a weapon. Could it be that Ace was also inspired by Zone fighter or they share production teams?
love the Ultra Guillotine and I agree that the word "insane" really fits the series. The story might not be as strong as predecessors but the fights are just... something else.

I think there was a 90s Ultraman show America attempted that I used to watch but I have no idea what it was called. I just remember the white boy killing his sister at some point because she was annoying, haha.
You played Ultraman Towards the Future, the 1991 SNES game that was based on the 1990 Australian made Ultraman Towards the Future TY series which lasted for 13 episodes and also was known as Ultraman Great in Japan. All 13 episodes can be seen on UA-cam btw. As far as an American made Ultraman show there were two: an animated cartoon made in the 80s and the 1994 live action Ultraman Powered show staring Kane Kosugi as Ultraman Powered. He is the son of 80's ninja movie legend Sho Kosugi, and he would also go on to play as Jiraiaya aka Ninja Black in 1994's Hidden Squadrion Kakuranger, as well as costarring in Godzilla Final Wars and playing as Ryu Hayabusa in the live action adaptation of the fighting video game Dead or Alive. This Ultraman Powered show also got a video game made for the Panasonic 3DO, and both Ultraman Powered and Ultraman Great would later show up in the web series Ultra Galaxy Fight which can be seen on UA-cam.
After watching Ultraman Z episode 19, I had to check this show out. I only watched a few episodes but so far even with the weird stuff that would've probably traumatized me as a kid it's a fun ride, and Ace is my personal favorite showa Ultraman

I grew up with this seires as a Kid, and the fights that Ace has are some of the most entertaining battles I have ever witness.
Things are gonna get more silly and kid friendly, before they get darker and more kill-em-all Tomino, than ever before.
