In my opinion this video did a terrible job summarizing the show! If I knew nothing about baby reindeer and I only saw this video about it, I'd never watch it. Baby Reindeer has so much more depth, horror and despair.
Your summarization of the show contradicts all of that! Do better.

Just watched it today. I got chills while watching it, not because it was heartbreaking to watch but because I know someone whose mental illness or symptoms resembles Martha's behaviour. One of my family members has Erotomania - a type of delusional disorder that makes one think that someone is in love with them even if they never met them in their life. That family member of mine is 20-30% of what Martha is like and it is still scary. Not sure how to describe it but she is out of control without medication. Hard core obsession over someone whom she never met in person, Stalking their family and friends online, searching everything about them online, hating their partners and female friends, standing in front of their houses for hours, staying nearby their houses. It is literally scary. Police get involved. It is a nightmare. She gets absolutely furious on anyone who tries to make her realize that she is not normal or she needs help. This is heartbreaking to watch. The toll it took on my family is unimaginable. Finally she is getting medical help now but who knows how long she will agree to stick to it. Real Martha also needs serious help. Her delusions will never stop unless she gets professional help. And the lead also had to go through a lot, I could literally relate to some of his struggles related to Martha like thinking about what she will do next to destroy his life. And when he shared his own story and opened up about the assault that happened to him, oh my god I cried so hard. He was indeed naive but he was brave too to share his story and absolutely honest about it. It was ugly and brutal but it felt real. Everyone gets lost sometime, this phase comes and goes. . This show was engaging and I absolutely loved everyone's acting. Lead actor and the actor who played Martha both nailed it. Considering the lead actor actually went through this in real life, wrote it, researched it to make a show about it and acted the whole thing. No one could have done it better then him because he actually went through all this shit himself. OMG what a series. 4.5 stars.

No, but I will be watching it. I've dealt with stalkers, so I'm curious how much it resembles my experiences. It's scary to have someone mentally unstable, narcissistic and completely obsessed try to get around restraining orders.

The blanket of immunity given to the uk police doesn’t help with the issue. There have been so many cases where victims of stalking call the police, the police don’t do anything about it, the victim ends up being murdered by their stalker, and the police aren’t ever held accountable for their negligence because of their blanket of immunity.
Not surprising the police weren’t helpful to this guy either. Thank god he didn’t end up getting murdered

Again, most if not all of the perpetrators were out on bail or had orders out on them when they perpetrated the at*ack/s.

Anytime Donnie reached for a hug before his father's confession, the dad always shook his hand (scene where he left home to talk to Martha after he went to check on his parents; Donnie hugs his mother, then the father automatically but he goes for a handshake). After the father shared his secret with his son, he could finally hug him as he saw a fellow victim in him, and they both were joined in tragedy.

The stress of it all got so bad that my relationship at the time took a turn and my bf broke up with me.
On the day I was assaulted I was talking to two of my friends about the break up and how I just wanted to focus on myself and school since finals were coming up. My stalker (let’s call him Brad) overheard us and tried to ask me out again.
At this point all my friends knew, and I was getting sick of Brad’s shit, told him to go away and that I was DEFINITELY not interested. All of a sudden, without saying anything, Brad grabbed me by my wrist and tried to drag me out of the classroom. For context I’m 5’1, about 130lbs, and fairly athletic. Brad was 6’5” and twice my weight in muscle. I start screaming, and my friends are screaming and punching him. The professor came in along with a bunch of students and staff he was talking to, and got Brad off of me. My parents were called to come get me since they didn’t feel comfortable with me driving myself home. Brad was kicked out and trespassed from all of the campus branches. It was a hot mess.

I feel like people miss the fact that he also has made a lot of mistakes ? In the way he wasn't clear with Martha from the beginning, let her interpret stuff even though he knew she was crazy... People seemed to miss the nuances, the fact that *he sees himself in her and he urges us to try to have empathy and understand*
I feel like this is what the last scene is about *spoilers* when he is crying at the bar, finally understanding how much she interpreted everything, that she projected so much onto him, was so attached because he looked like the only thing that gave her love when she was a child in a abusive household : her reindeer. And as he is crying, the bartender offers him a drink and he looks up to him, and you can see it in his eyes : he gets it ! How a simple act of kindness can mean the world and how, as Martha was very mentally unwell, unstable it started for her a whole obsession.

@@journey1186 I agree! I am not necessarily talking about him offering a drink, but what came after. Yk the times where he joked about making love to her, going out with her, and other things I don't exactly remember in the 3 first episodes. He even says it that Martha was helping him in a way, putting some drama in his life, giving him confidence etc... he loved her laugh, the way she saw him.....
I also think that the series shows that "being a nice guy" isn't always great, and that people should be more careful and understand that not everyone, as you said, is able to differentiate between : "he must have done that cause he is in love w me" than "he is just being nice".
Martha interprets every little thing and hold on to it (looks a lot like erotomania).

Like every time when the topic is on stalking it’s almost always seems like the male is the stalker and the woman is the victim, or it’s a woman stalking another woman, but when the man is the victim they aren’t taken seriously. Hopefully #BabyReindeer will bring an end to that

If a man had said that about a woman refusing to report it I imagine you'd have a few words for him like. That it's hard for women to come to terms with it then have the courage to go up against their abuser especially if their are high powered. Add in the shame and the ridicule and the victim blaming which goes on when women come forward. Why would any of that be any different for a man?
With men there is the added aspect of sociaties attitude that SA only affecting women. Men don't get SA they cause it, only weak or gay men get sa. As you saw in the show it caused him to question his sexuality due to the fact he kept going back until he was ultimatly R'd.

I’m glad his story is out there. There are way too many lonely, mentally ill people out there that misconstrue a gesture of kindness. As a woman I’ve had to deal with what most would probably assume to be decent manners and being humane taken to mean something else in the minds of others. I’ve had men whom have impersonated family to find out where I work and even which hospital I was in one time. Another incident had one of my stalkers sleeping on the pavement, outside my apartment door day after day while I was at work. I was nearly kicked out and told I would have to pay a fine for breaking my lease because of that moron.
Don’t even get me started on the police. I made so many reports, but it was all in vain. Nothing was ever done. I have to take Xanax almost every day due to my past experience with stalking. I have severe social anxiety. These people ruin lives!

Whats scary is the fact that when a man is put in this position and has these type of things happen to him that normally are viewed to only happen to woman, its like" really? You couldnt handle a woman? I dont believe you. Women have had it worse. " which yeah ,maybe women have had it worse because the female body is seen as more sexual and attractive than a male. Imo. But i can tell u 1st hand, as well as other males whove left comments, that this is way more common than anyone thinks. Its just viewed differently. My situation was not the same as this show, but it was a woman who was on a strong anti depresant and she drank profusely every night, so every night shed change into a diff person being drunk and say the most horrible things about me, and physically abuse me. Me being raised not to lay a hand on a woman( unless shes going to kill me ) just took it. And the next morning its" i dont remember that at all. I would never do those things. Im so sorry. Itll never happened again". Blah blah blah.
And when she decided to have an orgy with multiple men and women at a sex party ( no im not kidding or exaggerating 1 bit) i left. She admitted it because i knew by calling that night asking where she was and one of the participants grabbed the phone,DRUNK, and said" stop calling , shes fine, shes in good hands. Well take good car of her. Better than you can, BRO. you dont give her what she needs, and we will". So i waoted til she came home at 5am,, and i grilled her u til she came clean. Probably, she wanted out of the relationship because i always " dampered her fun" by not letting her drive hammered, reminding her of her 2 kids at home, etc. I know im horrible. But that was 2008, and i got over it, but theres plenty of men who have had things happen and just because they were raised to treat women with respect and not lay a hand on them, that is used to somes advantage. Now there are PLENTY of amazong women who would never do that. But please, dont think of it as a joke if you hear that a male is in the role that is usually reserved for a woman. Cause while my story is 1000% true, it isnt as bad as other guys have had it. And im not in any way trying to downgrade what women have gone through because like ive said, i know because of the beauty and sexuality a woman can represent, i know theyve had it worse than men ,in most cases. Dont twist my words or think im trying to say ive some victim. I see myself as someone who bettered their life and let the experience guide how i am now and in the future.

Seems the actual woman is coming forward and saying she was the one being stalked. This suits her behavior in the film as she was trying to blame him as well. Im not shocked by the number of people blaming the victim for what happened to them as it seems the norm to blame the victim for what happened, however i was shocked at the fact women blamed him for what happened. "Why didn't he report it?" We have seen time and time again what happens to women who report their abuse they get their names dragged through the mud they get told "Well she must have lead him on." or "Did you see what she was wearing." We even had the Me Too movement but i guess only women get to have that as women are the only gender who get SA, R or attacked men don't.
Except they do, however due to how sociaty treats male victims of these crimes they get the same victim blaming that women suffer plus "Well maybe he was gay and liked it." "If he'd only faught back harder." "Why did he keep going round there he must have been asking for it."
I find it odd that when the victim is male these is so much less compassion then if they were a woman, as I said before sociaty sees these types of crime to only affect one gender when infact men suffer too but are far less likely to report it due to the amount of abuse they incure from the general public.
Image in this had been a female comic who showed what she went through and the purpitrator was male would we have gotten comments like "Why didn't he turn in the guy that Sa'd him? He listened to hours of phone calls to catch his stalker. Interesting where the focus lands" I'll point put that that comment was left by a woman. Would she have said the same if had happened to a woman or woulds she have been really supportive of her? I expect so but because it happened to a man its good to victim blame. As i said before I guess the Me Too movement was only meant for women who suffered abuse not men or would she also criticised the women for burying that trauma and concentrating on the more recent trauma?
Cose no matter what way you cut it he suffered a hell of a lot of trauma and the SA he'd buried for years and it had affected him for years.
But sure lets carry on blaming the victim for being the victim except if said victim is a woman then we rally round and support her whilst stomping on the male victim of the same crimes.

    • @isadoradurso9491
      @isadoradurso9491 6 місяців тому

what you omit to consider is the intense situation in this specific story. ι i do not believe people are blaming the victim , they are questioning how it is possible not to take some measures to protect yourself when you see it coming, when it is clear that the person stalking you is beyond "normal' .Same for women victims. When the signs are so obvious for such a long time and you ignore them you are a part of your problem. Male or female it is just the same. And that doesn' t mean that the stalker or abuser is not guilty . If you know that someone is a convicted rapist and you go out with him expecting him to respect you because that is what he is supposed to do, and then he rapes you, he obviously is 100% guilty but you are also 100% stupid.
