This coarse compound paste doesn't make the keenest edge but the toughest edge like sandpapers do. So when the sharpness is insufficient I don't hesitate to take water stones.
Thanks for the video! I have watched your knife videos for more than 5 years. All my knives can wavy cut phone book paper and clean cut paper towels. When I sharpen the knives of friends and family, they are amazed and ask how I can get their knives so sharp. I tell them that I learned from a Japanese doctor.
I love virtuovice's sharpening videos and techniques... I've been watching on and off for years and can't believe I hadn't already subscribed. I also enjoy putting a smooth convex edge on most of my knives. Some people are obsessed with consistent angles, which is not a bad skill to have, but I've found that a shoulder on the edge makes cutting most things more difficult.
Both are beautiful knives. I appreciate you talking slower than most reviewers do. Sometimes it's hard understanding, with you I find it very easy. Enjoy your hunting trips.
Rick AB. Agree. Many reviewers out there that have fluff in their reviews. Not to mention unnecessary commentary and profanity. Also, most reviewers review their knives in pristine condition as they cut through printer paper, all the same videos. Wako is definitely one of the most informative and professional knife reviewers out there. He puts his knives to work!
greetings! I am a young michigan man that is getting into bushcraft and the outdoors as much as I can on my own as my father passed away when I was of age 10. I very much enjoy your videos as they are enjoyable, informative, and many have small bits of Japanese culture, I am very fond and fascinated of such and enjoy learning about it, I would like to learn Japanese, I took a year of Chinese in school and I understand the languages are similar In some ways, Japanese is not an easy language but I am not someone who enjoys easy tasks at all, a challenge is good. anyways, thank you for the stellar content my friend, keep up the good work! -Patrick
looked on your Chanel today to see if I had missed any recent videos. I was saddened to see that I had not missed any videos. I am glade to see your new video pop up!
Sick indeed! I still like the idea of Bravo 1 LT and Canadian Special though. It would be wonderful if you could make a comparison of each of these as the best all round and hunting knife. Thanks for the sharpening lesson as well!
You can make all your sheaths EEP. Melt beeswax and apply it it a warmed sheath (oven or heat gun) with a tooth brush. Use a heat gun or blow dryer to even it out as you apply. Buff excess off with a rag. They come perfect. You can custom form each sheath to the knife while warm. Be sure to use beeswax.
Thank you for this latest video. Have you reviewed or tested knives made from AEB-L or Sandvik 12c27 steels? Properly heat treated they can be 60Rc or slightly more. What do the Sika feed on in such deep snow? Thanks again!
My most favorite steel so far for all the purposes is CPM-3V because it is proven to be well balanced between hardness and toughness (long edge holding and no chips), and pretty rust resistant. Thanks.
I use a cheap USB microscope for the video, but in order to check the edge conditions before or after stropping or water stone sharpening I use a binocular microscope which is rather expensive by Nikon. ua-cam.com/video/OF9C-jOdmUM/v-deo.html
I know I had asked you about getting the elmax "hair popping sharp", well I figured it out with, Kent's Diamond Paste, I got 7 syringes of it for 20 bucks!!! Just thought I'd let you know, it is great for sharpening elmax!!
newer sheath (older) very very nice looking. the darker brown looks beautiful with the knife handle you chose. What is the best bark river knife for an all purpose camp knife, and a first time owner?
The shoulder prohibits low angle stropping to touch the apex. So in order to strop the apex the angle has to be as high as the micro bevel angle with the shoulder. Stropping polishes the apex but rounds it at the same time. So the high angle stropping dulls the edge. Thanks.
virtuovice Ok I see. That actually explains a problem I have been having with certain knives I have sharpened and then stropped. I need to pay more attention to the geometry of the micro bevel (or eliminate it if the overall thickness and primary shoulder geometry permit). Thanks. BTW I really like your channel and I Iook forward to your hunting videos coming soon!
Hello, I just bought my very first bark river knife with beautiful elder burl How do you maintain your wooden handle? Do you oil them? If so, what kind of oil do you use?
JPSikaHunter thank you so much for the reply! Never expected to get a reply so fast! Please keep on doing your wonderful videos, very informative, but at the same time I hate it so much, makes me want to buy some more! Hope I don’t break my bank hahaha
tank's for your videos. what's your opinion between the elmax and laminated 3g? if the blade was the same shape or the same knive? what in your opinion is stronger and more best edge retention. only between in this too steels what is the best for survival ? tank you for all
Fallkniven's bevel geometry just over the edge is quite thick and very difficult to sharpen while I can sharpen Bark River's edge very easily. Now the Elmax Gunny's edge angle is way smaller after my water stone sharpening and I will do deer dressing with it next chance. Then, if the Elmax Gunny doesn't chip at all, I can say Elmax is very tough. I have no intention to make the same angle to the both Elmax Gunny and 3G TK2 to abuse them to check which is the best steel because they are expensive knives and should not be chipped largely to need a large repair. Thanks.
Beautiful knives. Love the eep sheath. Thanks for the video. Glad you are making it through the winter. :-) How do you hunt in such deep snow? Keep up the good work.
RedneckInCarolina I like the 3v but little concerned about rusting in the snow. Leaning towards Elmax. Between the gunny and Fox river what would you recommend? Also considering the Bravo Hunter but it's in 3V only I think.
1095 is cheap and 90% as good as any "super steel" as knives are concerned. Take care of it, and you won't have a problem. You can even get into a custom in 1095 for a reasonable price.
I have no experience of Elmax for batoning to check its stability. For hunting it has a little micro chippy property in my experience and I have hesitated to use it for batoning. The apex angle of this Elmax Gunny Hunter is a little larger than my usual stone sharpened angle. I want to know if Elmax really has a micro chippy property in a regular angle and if 3G doesn't have it at all. Thanks.
Hello knife people. Dr. Wako has sold me on another Bark River knife . . . The Gunny Hunter Elmax. I must stop . . . I must stop . . . I must stop . . . ha ha ha
great to see you on this channel again!!
very informative, thank you

loving another virtuovice video to watch in full with a glass of red wine
Watching your videos are so strangely soothing. It's like watching an artist work.
Well said.
I watch his videos for the same reason. His calm soothing voice and temperment are almost hypnotic, or should I say therapeutic.
It's that good bedside manner carrying over into his videos.

Good seeing you DR. Looking forward to you hunting videos, good luck!!
looked on your Chanel today to see if I had missed any recent videos. I was saddened to see that I had not missed any videos. I am glade to see your new video pop up!
Excellent acquisition. Nice blade.
Awesome the restyled of the strope.
Congratulations.
Very nice Bark River, Wako. Love the box sharpening kit, pretty neat.
You got lucky with your handle scales. The wood is very beautiful with great figures. Congrats and keep us updated
mr waco is back with yet another fine video and two fine blades......hope to see you again real soon.....good luck with the next few stag hunts.
Great video when will you be making another family dinner video? It is cool to see the tasty meals your family makes.
Very good video! Thank you! looking forward seeing your hunting video comparison!
Quickly becoming my favorite channel. Thanks for posting!
Nice looking knife, thanks for the sharpening tips!
I look forward to the follow up videos. I wish you good hunting for the remaining two months!
Looking forward to your videos. The handle sales on the elmax blade are beautiful.
Sick indeed! I still like the idea of Bravo 1 LT and Canadian Special though. It would be wonderful if you could make a comparison of each of these as the best all round and hunting knife. Thanks for the sharpening lesson as well!
As ever the master of the sharpening strop ! Thank you.
Thanks for sharing and sharpening the Elmax. Looking forward to the comparison.

virtuovice is so good he almost put an edge on that popsicle stick.
That was an easy convex job you did. Thank you for another fine video!
I see by the comments, this is where the other UA-cam channels come to watch the master knife sharpener work his magic !!
Good to hear from you again!
Another great video looking forward to the results
Your the best man always get a laugh!! Very sick indeed.
Another great video, Doc.
Thank you for this latest video. Have you reviewed or tested knives made from AEB-L or Sandvik 12c27 steels? Properly heat treated they can be 60Rc or slightly more. What do the Sika feed on in such deep snow? Thanks again!
I would be very interested to see/hear your opinions on the Cobalt Steel used in the Fallkniven Pro series knives compared to the Elmax blades
Always enjoy your video's and your way of life!
So far, what are your favorite steels for fishing, hunting and bushcraft?
Thanks!
My most favorite steel so far for all the purposes is CPM-3V because it is proven to be well balanced between hardness and toughness (long edge holding and no chips), and pretty rust resistant. Thanks.
virtuovice
Good, me also!
What make microscope do you use? Is it expensive? Thanks!

Did you need to reprofile or regrind you gunny to make it thinner before using it for bushcraft and feathersticking?
Current Gunny is good out of the box.
Beautifully crated
Thanks for showing your technique for sharpening. I need a lot more practice
Thank you for your videos. Where in Japan do you live?
I was in Yokosuka, Kangawa for 8 years.
You are right, it is Sick! Great videos.
I'm very much looking forward to the future 3G vs Elmax video.
GunRagDave he has a comparison video
Yeah, but there's another one coming! YAY!
newer sheath (older) very very nice looking. the darker brown looks beautiful with the knife handle you chose. What is the best bark river knife for an all purpose camp knife, and a first time owner?
Gunny or Bravo 1 in old-reliable A2 is hard to beat for a do-everything knife. Someone will probably debate my recommendation of blade steel.
GunRagDave thank you. sounds good to me after the millions reviews I have watched.
For me it is 3V.
David Postmus how would you sharpen it in a survival situation?
It usually only needs a little stropping.
Microscope view is so helpful. But I don't understand when you said stropping the edge with the shoulder made it duller and duller?
The shoulder prohibits low angle stropping to touch the apex. So in order to strop the apex the angle has to be as high as the micro bevel angle with the shoulder. Stropping polishes the apex but rounds it at the same time. So the high angle stropping dulls the edge. Thanks.

virtuovice sick handle 👌🏼
Hello, I just bought my very first bark river knife with beautiful elder burl
How do you maintain your wooden handle?
Do you oil them? If so, what kind of oil do you use?
I have never oiled the handle yet. But I think linseed oil will do the job well.
JPSikaHunter thank you so much for the reply! Never expected to get a reply so fast!

Looks like a winner !!! Thanks for Sharing Brother !! Big ThumbZ UP (238th) ;)
DeeMelo Knives funny seeing you over here. I love watching this guy convex these knives.
Hello Friend what is that microscope model that you use?
Thank you
Beautiful Handle also!!
hi, what is the strop material on the bush 3 sided box with 12000 paste and 3000 paste in , is it leather on all 3 sides or balsa,it looks thick.?
The Japanese maker Bush Craft Inc. imitates DLT stuff. So its leather is as thin as that of DLT.
tank's for your videos.

I hope you make videos about Garberg on this channel, too. Thank you.
Beautiful knives. Love the eep sheath. Thanks for the video. Glad you are making it through the winter. :-) How do you hunt in such deep snow? Keep up the good work.
What knife/steel would you recommend for white tail? I live in NE Ohio USA. All weather conditions.
Taprack13 either Elmax or 3v.
RedneckInCarolina
I like the 3v but little concerned about rusting in the snow. Leaning towards

Taprack13 elmax
Taprack13 light saber

I like the Fallkniven better, in comparison of the steel at least. You may ot may not know, 3G is another name for SG2/R2/SGPS/MC63.
3g is Fallknivens proprietary name for a steel which is just laminated 3v.
mofomartian Not true. Look online. Fallkniven confirmed that they use 3G as a codename for SG2.
where do you buy most of your bark river knives from?
im quite in love with your collection!
keep it up!
I always buy from DLT because their USPS International shipping costs much lower than that of KSF which is richer in various handle stocks though.
thanks mate your videos are great!
Lighta cola
Awesome video man!
Nice job, as always
Say Heah Virtuovice, What do you think of the Elmax for a Survival Knife, Is it Chippy or Rollie-Pollie, Thanx You in Advance. ,, .

Elmax is good, not too high HRC, good amount of carbon and pretty good alloying because the amount of vanadium.
Elmax is good, not too high HRC, good amount of carbon and pretty good alloying because the amount of vanadium, chromium and molybdenum.
But not as good as the M390 by UHB, although the max RC is supposed to be 62 and most production knives are around 60. ,, .
I've missed those edge zooms.
Cv3 or elmax?
nice handle on that one
a little stonesharpening from time to time would be nice to watch.
Nice
keep them comeing 😃
nice!!
Hello knife people. Dr. Wako has sold me on another Bark River knife . . . The Gunny Hunter Elmax. I must stop . . . I must stop . . . I must stop . . . ha ha ha
Fallkniven!!!
makes me sleepy and boring
If you're bored, then you're boring.
