Mine is exactly the same. Haven't checked the colored ports but I feel like I remember them being colored. I also checked the SD card slot and it was 01 like yours. It made me feel a bit worried considering the visual signs all did not line up to the systems that would not have the Hynix chip, so seeing your comment makes me feel better. Also my system is from the New Super Mario Bros. U and New Super Luigi U bundle from 2013.
I was super worried for quite a bit there since I had all the symptoms of the HYNIX chip without checking (coloured ports, inside the SD Card said 01) and today I finally decided to setup the console and download wiiuident onto it, and turns out I have a Samsung chip inside! So I definitely recommend to everybody to check in the software before panicking, what a relief. Also turns out that I have a launch model 32GB console, even though I got it in 2013 :)

This video was a recommendation just now and I am quite happy to know that others with a Hynix WiiU to go through all this to make it easier to people like me in the longrun.
I did notice I have an "01" in my SD card slot. Sadly, I may have to hard mod my Wii U anyway since the SD Slot is broken. The spring (and I believe the plastic bit) came out and lost. :/ If you are curious. I did had Haxchi on the Wii U before it was broken. I was already planning Hard mod many of my retro consoles anyway to be more suited for modern use like USB-C power and HDMI. It just means I have to add Wii U on the Fix. I do check my Wii U every month or 2 to keep the NAND in check. So, there's that. But I may also use the Hard mod to have alternative NAND as a safe measure anyway.
If only the spring and cover are broken/missing, then you could cut a small piece of rubber and tape it onto the front to keep the SD card in the port. My friend did a similar thing when his Wii's SD spring broke, and it worked for him.
@ In my friend's case, only the spring broke, he still had the lid working. So I think he taped the rubber to the inside of the lid. But in your case, all you really need is a heavy object that can stand tall enough to reach the slot, tape something like rubber or a small piece of wood, and move it closer until it pushes your SD card in. It would be a temporary setup, but at least it would be enough to un-brick your console.
I actually have this installed already from that video tutorial you shared from another channel to where we learn how to use the same hard drive for both vWii and Wii U games. I don’t think I have it set up to protect against bricks, but I have a Toshiba chip, so I’m safe anyway

Mine has a "10" on the inside of the SD port. Not sure what that means. There's an orange port for the sensor bar and yellow port for the power cord. I got mine as a refurbished unit straight from nintendo
Okay so I actually have a question about the hacked Wii U, I accidentally "Bricked" the SD card for when I insert it and try using homebrew it turns black no matter what I do and I am honestly scared I only had Homebrew for a mere day and all I wanted to do was play Nintendont on my Gamepad using as a controller are you able to help me at all?
So i found out i probaly do have the HYNIX chip unfortantly :( My ports at the back are coloured and my sd slot has a 10 as number. I pre orderd my wii u back in 2012 all tho my Wii U does still work to this day after this video i play a game of rumble U to check. All tho when i started up it froze and nothing happend but that was probaly because i touched the wires at the back i just unplugged it plugged back in and it worked like it always does. My console isn't modded or anything should i be worried? (kinda thought i was fine since its almost always plugged in but saw that doesnt acaulty matter luckily it works for 12 years straight so hope for the best?)
I have a question. Am I able to use a 1GB SD card for homebrewing, such as the Homebrew app(s), Bootmii, Priiloader, Gecko OS, Nintendont, etc. I don't want any ISO files, just apps.
I just got Minute running before your videos, it is not to hard but I did end up with a typo in the ios_plugins folder, so always spell check, plus I backed up one extra thing not meaning to, it runs but I did dump a block that is not fully needed.
I gave up on mine. The recovery menu is completely black screen and ive tried multiple times navigating it in the dark. Gave up. To note, mine is stuck at the wii u logo
Man, i dont know how to thank you. You helped me mod my 3ds and this brought me so many good memories of my childhood. I am currently modding my 3ds, but cannot connect the gamepad to the wiiu. Whenever i press sync for the second time, it displays an error without code and prompts me to reboot the the console. This happens over and over. Because of this i cannot mod my wiiu. Do you have any fix or workaround? Thanks from Brazil brother.
Btw, I have tried everything on the internet. From the simplest to the most complex and nothung helped. I am thinking about wrapping the wii u and console in some sort of aluminum box to isolate the 5g frequency from the surrounding. This is already my last resort before getting it fixed, but i wanted to mod it very badly and this is the only thing standing in the way. I even tried calling the support and they couldnt help either.
I have the same thing and can confirm it's a hynix chip model (and probably amongst the first ever versions of the wii u to ship). ISFShax will probably be the safest bet in that case.
It is only those that have 40 or 50 that are guaranteed to NOT have a hynix. hynix chips are found in other variations. I have 3 with colored ports and only one hynix
I am not good at modding or opening up wiiU's. My original has a high chance but I have no idea what it has considering the year I bought it. However just a question I bought a 2nd one 2nd hand. Is this something that effects only 2012 and 2013 wiiU's or does this effect later ones? I can't check the number in the sd slot for my other one currently but I remember it was coloured connections also. However it's a limited edition version that came out 2014 onwards. Is there still a chance for it to have it? Otherwise I am going to have to dig it out.
I was worried because my ports are colored and I had a 01 in my SD card slot, but after trying the software to check for sure, it turns out I have a Toshiba EMMC, big relief. So don't sound the alarms if you have colored ports and don't have 40 or 50 in the SD card, install the software and check, there is still a chance you don't have a hynix.
Yeah those methods are really only for people who don't have time (buying a Wii u) or willing to homebrew /open up their console. The best is wiiuident!
i have a question, (this has not personally happened to me) what happens/what do you do when your external hard drive (being used on the wii u) stops working? will it damage the modded console itself or just the wii u games that are stored on the hard drive? (will savemii restore the data?)
32gb toshiba nand i thought with my familys luck we'd have a Hynix [its the 2012 Hynix nands that are failing] i didn’t ecen know that the 01 and ports could be a DEAD giveaway but didnt check then
Ah, awesome. First and foremost thanks for the updated video on this topic! I appreciate that you’re informing us about these bricks as they can be nasty.. If you don't leave it unplugged for a long period of time it's fine, boot it up periodically and play a game just to be safe. The problem occurs when you leave it unplugged for years, some had the problem after months, but I doubt it.
Hi FunkyScott, thanks for the video I did in fact install isfshax, but I don't know what to do next. Is installing it enough for my Wii U not to brick ever again? Or do I have to do something more e.g. create a RED NAND, upgrade my MLC,...?
So, if ever my Wii U bricks, isfshax will allow me to restore it? Is it mandatory to create a rednand at first in order to do that? Actually, my question is how exactly does isfshax restore the nand? EDIT: So, from my understanding, you can redirect your nand onto your SD card (i.e. red nand), and *even if* there's a brick on the eMMC, you can recover your games and save data from it by making the old MLC appear as a USB! (Yeah, I have learned my lesson by heart, done a lot of reading on GBAtemp 🤭)
it means you might have a hynix chip and you might need verify by a few methods: open the console, use software to check it after modding the console, or use UDPIH with ISFS/recovery_menu to check system information (no mod required but a Rpi Pico is needed)
It means you can't tell for sure what it is. If it's modded you need to use Wiiuident to confirm what chip you have. If it's not modded, you'd have to take the console apart and look
it means you might have a hynix chip and you might need verify by a few methods: open the console, use software to check it after modding the console, or use UDPIH with ISFS/recovery_menu to check system information (no mod required but a Rpi Pico is needed)
And if you have a hynix chip, don't panic. You just have to not leave it unplugged for long periods of time, people have reported that they had the problem after years of having it unplugged with a very small minority saying that it happened after a couple of months, which I doubt. Just keep it plugged in and boot it up every 2 months, maybe playing a game for a bit to be safe.

What if i have that rasperry pi pico tool which can unbrick wii u did it work for that too?
It only works if the thing can boot up even a little
Okay so I actually have a question about the hacked Wii U, I accidentally "Bricked" the SD card for when I insert it and try using homebrew it turns black no matter what I do and I am honestly scared I only had Homebrew for a mere day and all I wanted to do was play Nintendont on my Gamepad using as a controller are you able to help me at all?
So i found out i probaly do have the HYNIX chip unfortantly :(
My ports at the back are coloured and my sd slot has a 10 as number.
I have a number 01 does it mean that it has hynix chip?
no, it means you can'tt tell unless you open your console or use wiiuident
@@funkyscott47bruh hope I get lucky
@@funkyscott47I have a white Wii U there is a Toshiba or Samsung chip so maybe I'm in luck
I checked mine with WiiUIdent, but the sd thing it says 01 and i have colored ports, wtf?
I have the same thing and can confirm it's a hynix chip model (and probably amongst the first ever versions of the wii u to ship). ISFShax will probably be the safest bet in that case.
It is only those that have 40 or 50 that are guaranteed to NOT have a hynix. hynix chips are found in other variations. I have 3 with colored ports and only one hynix
@@turnofftheoverheadlight oh ok
I made sure to buy a 8GB japanese Wii U to avoid the entire issue since I'm using external drive to store everything anyway.
I have the SLC dump but too bad my Wii U is already softbricked with the error code during a factory reset
does anyone have the wii u Zelda Wind Waker Edition, what chip does it have?
I was worried because my ports are colored and I had a 01 in my SD card slot, but after trying the software to check for sure, it turns out I have a Toshiba EMMC, big relief.
So don't sound the alarms if you have colored ports and don't have 40 or 50 in the SD card, install the software and check, there is still a chance you don't have a hynix.
Yeah those methods are really only for people who don't have time (buying a Wii u) or willing to homebrew /open up their console. The best is wiiuident!
I don't have a wiiu but I still watched this video because it is funkyscott
You are amazing, thank you nengo :)
i have a question, (this has not personally happened to me)
what happens/what do you do when your external hard drive (being used on the wii u) stops working? will it damage the modded console itself or just the wii u games that are stored on the hard drive? (will savemii restore the data?)
32gb toshiba nand i thought with my familys luck we'd have a Hynix [its the 2012 Hynix nands that are failing] i didn’t ecen know that the 01 and ports could be a DEAD giveaway but didnt check then
Ah, awesome. First and foremost thanks for the updated video on this topic! I appreciate that you’re informing us about these bricks as they can be nasty.. (speaking out of experience, please don’t install Korean games on your western Wii U, it’s not worth it.) I’ll also wait for the update that you mentioned in the video, don’t wanna go through all the Struggle of doing an outdated method and then a new one pops up. Oh and nice nsmb gameplay, that shell you threw at blue toad (aka your wife) reminded me of all the times I purposely hit my friend with shells or threw them in lava lol. (4:03)
I'm trying to be informative but not overbearing so everyone knows what's up! (and yet I still make mistakes lol) and yes good call! He's making the process easier too so it's worth waiting :)
Hehe I'm glad you noticed that 😄 we only played 2 levels together but it's always more fun with 2 players!!
Is tha gonna hat thing part of a video game mod
Its sad to see an old console die ,not yust the wii U ,yust becouse of a defect ,og Xbox clock capacitor,ps2 slim dvd drive ,launch ps3/xbox 360 Gpu ....
I have two wii u's but only one gamepad. decided to hook up the wii u I haven't used and it didn't boot (never used it since I got it)
since I have a pi pico laying around I decided to try the UDPIH hack and it can both verify that it do indeed have a hynix chip but it also could see the boot title was corrupted and set to something else. fixing that got me booting again.
now hacked and nand backed up.
in the sd card slot mine has the number 30 but the app said i have a samsung nand. what does this mean
Same for me :P
5:05 i have a 30 number at there is my wii u have a hynix chip?
No, since you don't have 40 or 50 it means you have to either take your Wii u apart to check or use Wiiuident from my last video
@funkyscott47 thank you so much ♥️
I got a white Wii U, so basically I’m safe
you interested in trying to fix my barely used 32gb model that is just stuck @ the wii u main screen, and doesnt advance?
It freezes? Do you have isfshax installed?
@funkyscott47 No I let it sit for 3+ years and now it's bricked
Had someone brick their wii U and they didnt even mod it. Im not sure it can be salvaged
My wup installer gx2 either freezes when installing or throws a error code saying no access or no usb? When I have one, I’m getting them off of Wii U downloader and I can’t figure this out, I have installed games off of here before
You don't install it, you just put it on your SD card and boot it up through Aroma. Check out his last video
Even when pluged, my wii u doesn't light up and turning on. There isn't hope for that, right? 😢
Is this gameplay with your wife? If it is that’s so sweet :)
Hehe yes it is! I told her that 2 player gameplay is more interesting and she played a couple levels with me 😁
Hi, Scott. Sorry to bother you, but which of your tutorials on playing Game Cube games on WiiU do you recommend the most for Aroma CFW?
i have this one here for playing gcn games with nintendont :) ua-cam.com/video/qyC-Wt9-7D8/v-deo.htmlsi=LoTQiQKKq_hUOnPs
If you want VC injects on your Wii U menu, here's my guide for that! ua-cam.com/video/8kW9dZDqv8w/v-deo.htmlsi=CrKRHp3K0sbPFJVM
my friend has black wii u, so I hope nothing bad will happen
If you don't leave it unplugged for a long period of time it's fine, boot it up periodically and play a game just to be safe. The problem occurs when you leave it unplugged for years, some had the problem after months, but I doubt it.
Hi FunkyScott, thanks for the video
I did in fact install isfshax, but I don't know what to do next. Is installing it enough for my Wii U not to brick ever again? Or do I have to do something more e.g. create a RED NAND, upgrade my MLC,...?
It's essentially a failsafe that you can use in case your Wii u bricks, kinda like bootmii! So hopefully you will never need to use it :)
I have 01 in my sd slot what means this ?
it means you might have a hynix chip and you might need verify by a few methods: open the console, use software to check it after modding the console, or use UDPIH with ISFS/recovery_menu to check system information (no mod required but a Rpi Pico is needed)
It means you can't tell for sure what it is. If it's modded you need to use Wiiuident to confirm what chip you have. If it's not modded, you'd have to take the console apart and look
@ ok good I got the Samsung chip. Yes I am so happy even on my second Wii u which is black I got the good chip
@ well luckily it wasn’t the Hynix chip
I just used the WiiUIdent app to check my console because I was curious and sadly I have the Hynex chip 😭 fml
you should try installing the wrong nand on wii u
Someone please help, wup installer gx2 either freezes or throws a error code saying access failed, I don’t know what to do please help
I have a 01 SD card slot, just checked, I have a Samsung chip. I have the NSMBU edition Wii U 32GB from Holiday 2013
People one question, what happens if the 106 error pops up when I try to enter the Stats Channel but outside of that nothing more?
It might mean your nand chip is starting to fail but is mostly fine, but I can't say for sure
@funkyscott47 so should I do the renand change while I can right? My Sd card is a Kingston of 64gb that works?
I NEED HELP! I NEED TO UPDATE MY WII U BUT I CANT BRING BACK THE UPDATE FOLDER WHAT DO I DO 😭
Boot Aroma while holding + (Plus). Hold + (Plus) and - (Minus) until it says "Updates not blocked!".
@@funkyscott47 Thanks! ill try it later!
@@funkyscott47 Thanks so much! youre a life saver i got my vwii working again thanks to you youre a legend!
Mine says 30 should I be concerned? But it doesn't have the color ports in the back
Only way to truly know is if you use the homebrew app "Wiiuident" or to physically open your console
@funkyscott47 😓😭😭😭
What if i have a 01 in my sd slot
it means you might have a hynix chip and you might need verify by a few methods: open the console, use software to check it after modding the console, or use UDPIH with ISFS/recovery_menu to check system information (no mod required but a Rpi Pico is needed)
You can't truly tell the unless you use the Wiiuident app (you need aroma cfw for this) or physically opening the console
And if you have a hynix chip, don't panic. You just have to not leave it unplugged for long periods of time, people have reported that they had the problem after years of having it unplugged with a very small minority saying that it happened after a couple of months, which I doubt. Just keep it plugged in and boot it up every 2 months, maybe playing a game for a bit to be safe.
been hearing about this for the last 2 years or so. i finally checked my wii u and it seems i got the colored outlets and a 01 on the sd card slot. guess i'm doomed... 😢😭
Hynix chips aren’t very cash money
Fr fr!
Where do I find the link to the discord server?
I have a black wii u that came with 3d world and nintendo land pre installed and has a 30 but im still concerned of the possibility of a hynix. If anybody has torn one of these apart and knows what chip it has can tell me because i dont plan on tearing/modding mine
You said the SD method of checking on stream yesterday.
Yes, and I told you it was gonna be in the next video lol
I already checkt if i have a hynix and i have a toshiba chip.
i now looked in the sd card slot and there is a 30 in it.
Yeah only the numbers 40/50 guarantee it's not hynix, where the other numbers just mean you can't tell for sure
My wii u has a 01 number when i took out the sd card.
good thing i region changed my wii u and it requires isfhax
