  • I had a request from a viewer to show the difference a 300 Hertz roofing filter can make during contest conditions. Well, it wasn’t a CW contest but RTTY. But that was fine. I could listen in CW mode and attempt to separate the Space frequency from the Mark frequency to illustrate how the combination of the 300 Hertz roofing filter and superior DSP could isolate one from the other.
Okay, so it’s not exactly CW. But there are two tones involved, in close proximity. One is a low frequency tone, called the Space. The other is a high frequency tone, called the Mark. RTTY involves shifting between these two tone frequencies in a fashion that sounds similar to 60WPM CW. So in this video I use CW mode to listen to RTTY signals and I show how the combination of a 300 Hertz roofing filter and DSP can help separate the two parts of the RTTY signal. We are eliminating one portion of the RTTY signal, leaving the other, so knocking out QRM from another signal up or down the band is a cinch.

It amazed me as well, Robert. No transceiver is perfect but this one is very close where it truly matters.

@@n4hnhradio I wish Yaesu would give the option of display averaging in a much needed update?

Many are changing their mind and preferring the instant response of the Yaesu waterfall. Lower the scope sensitivity to the point where you see blanks between signals. The averaging scopes seem to do that as a mechanism to make it easier to separate signal from the noise floor. I’m not a waterfall watcher so I don’t have a horse in the race. I’ve just been reading opinions on some of the social media platforms.
