I have my contour control set for peaking. I use it to raise the frequencies lost as I get aggressive with the DNR. I typically use 4 DNR and depending on the bandwidth I use adjust the 2000 to 2200 range. When I use a narrow bandwidth I adjust it lower of course to track the filter. In many ways the manual configurations of the 5000 are a dream come true. Such an amazing transceiver. Hope to work you again soon BTW.
I won't use my call here but I am in the mountains of WNC. 73 OM

I have the FTDX3000 and twiddle the contour and DNR similarly. Tremendous down conversion receiver, same specs as the 5000's primary receiver. I just wish the 3000 had the 5000's knobs, and extra 100W! IF a 5000 ever comes available at a great price, I may jump on it and sell the 3000. Budget and boss allowing, of course! 73 great videos!! de Cliff W3KKO

I’ve told this story elsewhere here, but I had fun at HRO when a TS-590SG owner saw me playing with the FTdx3000D and challenged me to a dual for pulling out weak signals. He walked right out of the store grumbling, “I wish you hadn’t shown me that!” It was awesome! I do highly recommend the FTdx5000, especially the MP version. That’s the last variant made. Still the greatest transceiver ever made, in my opinion.

Hi Paul! You can use the same technique with any transceiver that has DNR and a Contour filter. I do like the FTdx5000. I won’t lie. But the FTdx10 and the FT991A are great rigs too. I just like the bigger radio with more control via knobs and buttons. 73, Doug

Yaesu says that a two-contact plug cannot be used. You must use a 1/4”Tip-Ring-Sleeve type plug. Also, remember to set the Keyer type, in the CW Setting menu, to Off.

Run a 101MP here and there are times when the Contour will un-mask signals, I never knew existed. Try using IF shift in tandem with your Preselector sometime, may give similar results to the 101's VC Tune. There would be a 5000 here had the 5000 not been discontinued. Hope they make one last run on the 5000's.

    • @n4hnhradio

If you watch more videos on my channel, you will see extensive use of IF shift, in conjunction with width, even with the FTdx5000MP, which has a preselector.
The FTdx10 doesn’t have a preselector and it does quite well. The preselector can be the icing on the cake. I use it more for combatting noise.

@@n4hnhradio The VRF and IF shift in tandem may give similar results to the 101's VC Tune. Knew the FTDX 10 was without VRF they should have added it. If I ever end up with a 5000, I'll give it a try myself. You have the Hi-mu add on's, do they apply IF shift automatically with preselection adjustment? I'll probably own a 5000 one day before the shows over. I like the 101MP but the software sux, Yaesu should have just went with the line menu like the 5000 in the 101, or a pair of line menus.

VRF, mu-Tune, and VC-Tune preselectors are positioned between the attenuation circuit and the bandpass filter. They have nothing to do with IF. I sometimes use a combination of IF shift and mu-Tune, after narrowing the IF bandwidth, to combat QRM and/or QRN.
Even though the VRF and VC-Tune preselectors are installed internally, they take up too much space to fit them into a transceiver the size of the FTdx10. Remember that the FTdx10 is essentially a FTdx101D, minus the second receiver, VC-Tune, and multiple antenna ports, and crammed into a smaller enclosure. Another trade-off is that the FTdx10 has fewer commonly-used controls available as knobs or buttons. It is a bit more menu-driven than the FTdx101D.
Still, the FTdx10 is beaten only by the FTdx101D or MP when comparing its RMDR score to all other transceivers.

Great video👍❗️I am going to go back and look at some of your previous videos, I think you may have made a similar video on the FT 891 I need to find that video. Thanks 73 KV5P

      Thank you, Mike!
With the FT-891 DNR set to less than 9 there is a digital artifact that makes it sound as though you are listening under water. So, using this technique with a FT-891 might not produce results that are as good as with the FTdx10. The FTdx10 DNR can be set to algorithm 1 and it won’t produce the digital artifact.
Don’t get me wrong though. The FT-891 DNR, at algorithm 9, is still one of the best in the world. You might just have to narrow the Contour a bit, to maybe a width of 7 or 8. Maybe even reduce the level to -12 or so, rather than -15, when using DNR at algorithm 9.

I’m surprised there is not a aftermarket preselector available (maybe there is?) It wouldn’t be cheap, but it would certainly improve the performance of all radios, even the non-hybrid SDR’s

    • @n4hnhradio

Well, the preselectors for the FTdx5000 are $650 each. One for 160m, one for 80/60/40, and one for 30/20. I have the latter two, which have been featured on my channel numerous times. They are fully automated. They track the VFO with whatever offset I choose. The FTdx5000 also includes a built-in preselector for each band. It is called VRF. VRF isn’t as tight as the external (MTU) versions, and VRF doesn’t track with the VFO. But, VRF is quite effective.
The FTdx101D has a built-in preselector (VC-Tune) that is on-par with the external (MTU) units that I use with the FTdx5000. Do the math and it makes sense to buy the FTdx101D or MP, with effective built-in preselectors. The FTdx101D has VC-Tune only for receiver A. The FTdx101MP has VC-Tune for both receivers, plus an additional 100W of transmit power, and a 300 Hertz CW roofing filter is included for receiver A.
From what I have read about the Elecraft K4HD, it will include preselectors. I expect it to be a fine transceiver. I am radio poor, so I won’t be able to buy a K4HD.
