What an amazing video. Another place i need to visit. Also interesting that Gardener was the photographer there. He took so many great pictures in Gettysburg after the battle
This is so cool ! I didn't realize that this location still existed ! So glad that this survived for over 100 + years . Thank you so much for showing this location ! History Nerds Rule !
Glad you enjoyed it! It was so cool to be in the space. Hooray for History nerds!
Goodness! I can't thank you enough for this video!

Thank you for watching and all the support. 🇺🇸
Impressive presentation, thanks!
Thank you for watching!!!
Loved your video, cant wait to go there and at fords theater..
Yes. Very cool places tied to American History.
I think the accused were guilty, but i seriously dont think Lincoln would have allowed this type of trial had he survived and could issue an executive order to allow their constitutional rights in an actual Federal court since the murders happened in DC. Maybe i am wrong, but i like to think so. Great job showing this place.
Thank you for all the support. I agree I think everyone charged was guilty. I think how they were tried make have been corrected but in the end I do think everyone who was charged was correctly charged.
So glad to have you back! Were the bodies eventually moved elsewhere?
Happy to be back! Yes , President Johnson released the bodies to their families in 1869
Thank you for the wonderful video
Thank you! 😁
You're welcome
Finally got to watch this. Another place to add to my bucket list. You been missed last couple weeks. Can’t wait to see what’s in store
Thank you. We missed you all too!!
Awesome video, Jen! This venue is on my "Bucket List."
Great spot for the list! We put a link in the description to the army site with visit information if you want to check that out. 😊
Thank you for another wonderful video. I have stayed on Ft. McNair and attended War College events there. I had no idea that is where the Lincoln Assination Trial took place or that the hangings and burials were on the Fort. Once again, thank you so much for telling these stories.
Thank you Doug! It was so cool to visit the space…so many people didn’t know about until a professor researched it and saved it! 😊
It is quite haunting to look at the accused hanging from the gallows especially knowing it took roughly six minutes for Powel to stop thrashing about as he slowly strangled to death. Herold did not die quickly either. Only Surrat and Azoroldt appeared to die fast.
That is how I felt too. It happened right there. It felt surreal to be there.
@@WalkwithHistory feel free to chat fellow history nerd!
The Judge Advocate of this trial was born in my hometown of Mercer, Pennsylvania. He was the principal framer of the Fourteenth Amendment.
how cool!
Amazing fact how quickly our justice system moved to execute those on death penalty back in those days. Today a condemned can be on death row for many years TY Jenn. As always cheers to y’all.
Very interesting indeed. 😁
This was great content. I am a "history buff" but I had no idea this historical location was preserved and available to the public. Definitely will keep it in mind for my next trip to DC.
The movie "The Conspiritor" was so moving and really made me think about the post assassination chaos our nation experienced. Also I was disturbed by how much I hated Kevin Klein in that film (yet I guess Edwin Stanton was probably a man with a TON of pressure on his shoulders in the summer of 1865).
Thank you. It was a real pleasure to be there. The movie “The Conspirator” was so good, another one I have to revisit.
Great video! Greetings from Chile 🇨🇱. What’s that house builted over the tennis court?
It looked like they were doing repairs and that was a temporary repair shop. Thank you for watching.
I see Mary Surratt's table. Writing about her for my Civil War class was so much fun and so interesting.
Yes! Being in the space was amazing. Such a fascinating person to write about. 😊
@@WalkwithHistory I bet. I'm putting this place on my list of sites I want to visit!
Great video! I was shocked that the grounds of the such a historical site was now at least in a part a tennis court. After a little reading I discovered the building was slated for demolition in the early 2000's luckily a professor from NDU who worked in the building petitioned his congressman saying you can't let this happen, this is a historical treasure, we have to restore it. Congress came up with the funds to restore the building. It was out of historical preservation coffers and not DOD funds, and the building renovation took place from 2009-2012.
This is the site of arguably the most historically sufficient trial in America and it was almost lost to the bulldozer and wrecking ball. I'm trying to pin down the name of the professor but so far no luck.
What great info! We will definitely mention this on the podcast tomorrow night.
Some where on the base are the discards(buried) from the Truman Whitehouse Reconstruction in the 1940s.
Roughly half of the Buildings original mass.
Wow!
This part of the Civil War, I think it is because it’s pre Reconstruction, has always fascinated me. I don’t think we’ll ever know the full truth. I think there’s a lot Booth took to his grave. Think I’m overthinking this?
Probably not…always wish I could know more than only what was recorded.
I wonder what a modern trial would have looked like...
That would have been a show for sure!
I kind of think Jefferson Davis I had a hand in this too even though there's no direct proof I guess
🤔
Good gawd. You should do a little more research before you do these videos. Camera wave makes people dizzy get a gimbal.
What research did I get wrong? Sorry about the shaking, having personal access after hours made for a one-man show. Better to see it shaky than to not see it at all.
@@WalkwithHistory it just needs a little more in-depth study, seems like it was kind of glossed over I've been studying the Lincoln assassination for years
Me too!!! Also read ManHunt. I wanted to show the trial location more than get into the actual trial transcripts. I have videos from the night Lincoln was shot from Fords Theater, Dr Mudds House and grave, Richard Garrett’s grave and Lincoln’s tomb among others. I know a lot about the night and trial. I actually do a good job of showing exactly where the scaffolding was and where they were buried which no one else does a good job of doing.
@@WalkwithHistory ok
Yes I've had Manhunt for quite a while
I'll check out your other videos thanks

I don’t know what your full-time job is, but you should consider teaching history to children. Your videos are really informative, but fun to watch. Thank you for making this great content.
Thank you. That means a lot. I try to make the history relatable and interesting. We really enjoy what we do!!
